Dashboard Update (aka the HDMI Audio fix)

Starting Tuesday morning at 0200 Pacific when you sign into Xbox Live you’ll be prompted for a mandatory dashboard update. The update addresses the issue that a few folks were having with audio and their HDMI connection.

This update will be rolled out to all Xbox LIVE members around the world over the space of a few hours, so you may not get prompted for the update immediately. Thanks for your patience.

  • MACPH1ST0

Any more details as to what exactly this is fixing, like a link?

  • hied

    Welcome to Orlando!

  • AlexKokonas

Had no idea that people where having problems with this. Say How about a new notification noise when friends log online. I am surprised that no one has made a mention of this before. I dont understand why the noise is the exact same as when you unlock an achievement. It gets my hopes up at times. Oh well just a suggestion

  • Custom Casket

    FIRST POST

  • MACPH1ST0

Nice try Custom Casket, but you LOSE! ;) Now back to the issue at hand…

  • technofranki

I’ve heard about this problem. Good that they fix it.

  • Exu

You lose, Custom Casket. Please don’t try again later.

Right before you lot start crying “what’s on arcade waaah”, I heard it’s some three on three hockey game, so you can go right into crying about how it’s yet another rubbish week and how we still don’t have OutRunOA or other good upcoming game.

  • Sole Epiphany

awesome, however I was chaulking it up to my Sony KDL46Z4100 as being the issue as it happens with my PS3 as well.

  • DL CyberSkull

    @AlexKokonas Great Suggestion!

  • BrarStar

knew people were having this problem didn’t have it with my HDMI but good for fixing it.

  • Enkeixpress

I don’t have this problem.. But I hope that this “update” doesn’t give me it instead of fixing it.

  • CDR Hajimaru

Thanx for the update. But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE why is Race Pro not getting any coverage AT ALL on the MARKETPLACE?! not a single vid NOTHING. and the demo was “coming very soon” but where is it? is there even a demo or are you guys just letting this week for the Halo Wars demo? PLEASE CAN WE GET SOME NEWS ON THE RACE PRO DEMO?!

  • davidkenobi

    thanks Major, information relayed

  • Warrengonline

Welcome to Orlando, FL where currently is it nice and wet, but from where you’re from, not too cold. ;)

  • Interceptor Lee

According to Xbox360Achievements, this week’s XBLA title is R-Type Dimensions for 1200 MS Points.
    http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/news-2161-R-Type-Dimensions-Hits-XBLA-on-Wednesday.html

  • A Place for Us

Hmm. Sure, how about fixing the pass code thing? Some reason, I have to enter the pass code twice to sign into Xbox LIVE (if I have signed out and then want to sign back in again).

  • deathtrap3000

Can you fix the hangs that plague the nxe next. Also the loading that happens when the 360 is turned on is a step back for the 360. And having it boot to ‘my xbox’ instead of ‘spotlight’ would be a bonus.

    Thanks.

  • Nitramuse

    @AlexKokonas

Yeah, now that you mention it…Almost every sound was renewed with the NXE, except for that particular sound. Make it another one! :P

  • KineticOnline

Would this be the dashboard version 2.0.7363.0 that joystiq xbox was talking about on Jan 16th?

  • IconicSoulJA

??? So if you don’t have HDMI, why is this needed?

  • rastansaga

    it’s R-Type Dimensions this Wednesday for 1200 points = $15
A bit expensive i thought, considering you can get R-Types (which includes emulated R-Type and R-Type II) on the PS3 from the PlayStation store for $5.99. I make that an extra $9 for Dimension’s co-op play?

  • Souks83

Funny how the update is released after I read the story on Gizmodo yesterday. I’ve been experiencing the HDMI sound issue and glad that it will finally be resolved… I hope.

  • tabicat

Is it a coincidence that this article came out yesterday?

    http://i.gizmodo.com/5143923/xbox-360-hdmi-sound-issue-remains-unexplained-unaddressed

  • Kris120890

Hopefully it fixes the no video from HDMI as well. I get no signal from hdmi at all Yet it worked before my xbox broke. When I got my xbox back from repair I installed NXE and all of a sudden Hdmi stopped working even though it worked in the nxe before My xbox broke.

  • IconicSoulJA

I hope this update adds the physical HDMI port to my 360. ;)

  • Parassassin

On my old HDMI TV I had to buy the official hdmi audio cable because I was having sound issues but since NXE and my new TV Ive had no problems whatsoever!

@ CDR Hajimaru There is a video on inside xbox showing the god awful graphics for this shambolic game! Sorry mate but from what I have seen of this game it looks like a hige step backwards for xbox gaming.

  • DJThomasMelvin

I wonder if this does anything about the video dropouts that occur during playback of some HD-DVDs when using HDMI. That would be nice. I’m stuck at 1080i right now because my plasma won’t do 1080p over component.

  • e

For those of you asking if it’s a coincidence re: the Giz article – the answer is yes. When we update the Dashboard we test the new version for weeks or months, not a day.

  • Exu

@Interceptor Lee – Ah, that’s better. Like the game, don’t like the price.

  • RageKage657

I’d like to see a patch for the broken party system. It really kills the experience of playing a game when you have to keep rejoining parties.

  • threeleggedcow

When are they going to add the option to NOT send audio via HDMI if you’re using an optical cable (audio system does not have HDMI) so I don’t have to turn the volume down on my tv each time I play my 360? Or am I missing something?

  • Jrocker23

Major- can you find out if there is a netflix issue with connections. Myself and other friends come accross real bad speed times from around 5:30pm est till about 1am est. I have spoken with Netflix, Verizon Fios and MS.

MS and Verizon confirmed my connection is fine (20/5 connection with an actiontek router with latest firmware and compatible with live) and netflix says its the isp. It has been happening for 2 weeks now consistantly at the same times for us. It was running great before.

Everytime we stream a movie it will play for a minute or 2 and then give the error “your internet connection has slowed” I can understand it getting slow but with fios it shouldnt get so bad that the video is almost unwatchable.

    Thank you

  • OIOOIOII

Finally I’ll have some Dashboard Sounds via HDMI now :D

    Also is anyone else out there using Avast 4.8 AntiVirus as I keep getting the following Malware Attack each time I visit this site now;

    File Name:- http://www.majornelson.com/blog/blog.html
    Malware Name:- HTML:Script-inf
    Malware Type:- Virus/Worm
    Running on IE 8

It’s most likely just a False-Positive so I’m just checking.

  • LDS Drive

Good thing I haven’t had that audio problem.

  • II QUiCK5HO7 II

I’ll update my xbox tomorrow thn. There should be an update for that annoying “friends online” sound as well, but everybody can live wiht it, so no probs. I didn’t have probs with the audio thanks God.

  • Raiden BR

Finally!.. 2 n a half months to fix this.. terrible MS.

  • Xclusivekill3r

Thank God. I have been having this problem with my xbox since the Launch of NXE. Glad its getting fixed.

  • Tony Blac

    @princeworm
There’s an option to turn those sounds off

  • DeathLeprchaun

its about time, been waiting for this

  • CyberKnight

    @Absyrtus:

Hit your Guide button, press “X” to sign in, select your profile there. You’ll only be asked for the passcode once. (Unless you’re getting a double-passcode from an auto-sign in, in which case I think you’re out of luck.)

  • Xbox Sonic

    @KineticOnline
I guess so. They must have been doing some tests on the consoles previously pulled to early updates.

  • Gatremag

    HDMI Audio rocks! yay!

  • GokTheCroc

Nice thing they fixed it! my friend was having problem with this for a while now. Btw i heard that this week arcade release suppose to be R-Type Dimension

  • NICK982002

    Dont do it it’s the…..BANHAMMER

  • DennisB407

Hope you’re out of here (Orlando) by Wednesday morning, its supposed to be 29 degrees.

  • Monkey454

any chance that there will be a fix for system locks with games like Fable 2 GTA IV and Orange box. I’m having those troubles and I read that a few other people are as well

  • LetsHideNSeek

OMG finally, i waited so loooooooong for this thank you so much.
finally i can play with hdmi

  • Chrnochan

I would love to have also the problems of language on the online content solved… will it be one day possible?

  • Macdory

This weeks Arcade game is R-Type for 1200 points … i guess that MS haven’t heard that there is a recession on and no matter what the economic cycle, and old shooter ijust isn’t worth 1200 points !!!

  • Macdory

    Typos for the win :p

  • Anonymous

anyone get it yet? i’m still waiting for it

  • Alpha NLD

Please make the default start blade: My Xbox. I don’t like the news blade :-(

  • MACPH1ST0

I just got the update, about 90 minutes after the posted time. Now if I just had a HDTV to test it out on… :(

  • FOXHOUND MGS4

About time, ive been having a few issues with my HDMI connection’ hopefully this will sort it out…. thank you MS :)

  • IrN ChRiZ

I have 3 360′s and this was happening on my sons Elite. Wasn’t a really big problem till about 2 weeks ago when he started to play more Halo 3 with his mates online. Glad its fixed as he kept moaning at me about no audio. lol

  • Chrnochan

    updating right now! *finger crossed*

  • Chrnochan

ok as expected no fix for the language bug :(

  • MADEIRA STEVE88

good i use hdmi on my 360 elite, so this is welcome doh i didnt experience any problems this is still great imo

  • LetsHideNSeek

this update su cks… now i only get 480p with hdmi -.-

  • The FlashMonkey

good stuff, now all they have to do is fix the Party “cant connect due to a network problem” and we might recieve a near perfect service. ;)

  • EtTuBruteshot

Does this include a fix for the audio sync issues experienced with DVD playback via HDMI cable directly to a TV’s HDMI port?

It’s pretty maddening to have the audio and video get out of sync when playing a DVD on the 360. The 360 is worthless as a DVD player with this problem. I had heard or read it was due to the 360 shipping with an older version of HDMI.

  • Adam in Texas

    Kris120890 –

Funny you mention that, I was going to ask something similar as well. I don’t have HDMI ports (using component cables) on my 360 but when my system came back from repair these are my usual steps for playing a game:

    Turn on 360
Sharp Aquos will either show nothing on the screen or it will have sound but no picture (like it isn’t getting a signal from the 360) Sometimes all the lights on the ring will stay solid (and do the same on my controller)

    Turn off the 360

Turn on the 360 and it works.

  • IconicSoulJA

SO WHY DO I NEED THIS UPDATE IF I DON’T HAVE HDMI PORT? CAN SOMEONE ANSWER ME!!

  • IrN ChRiZ

    @IconicSoulJA

You NEED to have this update as all XBOX 360′s have the same Dash/NXE version. This is so that Microsoft and game developers build their games and test them with one end target rather than testing with all versions of the NXE.

  • Blue Thunder28

Damn I was hoping for a super surprise update containing Primetime until I saw there was no change for me :(

  • MADEIRA STEVE88

yh why of earth the 360 has a ver1.2 hdmi port il never know. especially since my tv is a ver1.3 hdmi device (lg scarlet)

  • Turtle502

it’s fitting that the sound for friends signing-in is the same as an achievement pop. having friends AND actually having them on LIVE at the same time is quite an achievement…!!! :p

  • TrojanGuy2k

Downloaded the update this morning, and suddenly my 360 is giving me the RROD. This happen to anybody else?

  • BalBaiD

Update didn’t fix the problem for me. :(

  • Fjordpony

Ok, so this Update actually broke my graphics output.

Today I turned on my XBox (Elite) only having sound (via extra connector) an no video output.

After confirming all connectors are good I connected it to a
TV with HDMI of a friend and there it was: Dashboard version 2.0.7636 (The new one)
It seems the HDMI Update enabled now HDCP all the time but my screen used for my
XBox doesn’t support HDCP (Connected via HDMI-to-DVI adapter).

I hope for a quick fix, as all that copy protection stuff was one reason
for me to get an XBox.

The best thing is that I was not prompted to install the update. I turned it off yesterday evening and only on today.

  • saado

This update appears to have broken video on my tv now, was getting video without sound on my tv before it, now i’m getting neither. My monitor is back to normal though, but I really want to use the hdmi on my tv for gaming :(

  • WraithStalker

Only HDMI, huh? I was really hopeful that it would fix the excruciating hang-ups on the guide & dashboard. Please, please, please… make this fix a top priority. Any other improvements (My Xbox as default, party system fixes, etc.) would also be appreciated.

  • Evanfly

I’ve had my 360 for just over a year and a half (premium model with component outputs, upgraded hdd to 120gig)with no problems what so ever.switched on today and preceded to install new update and it’s killed my machine.it started to install the update and just stopped and the rrod appeared.looking on the web it appears the update is mainly hdmi issues which my machine doesn’t have.coincidence not sure, butif the 360 hasn’t got hdmi what is it updating if anything?not happy at all spoke to microsoft gotta send it away for repair

  • Julio Ernesto

My console do not have HDMI port, however, this morning my console was updated. my cuestion is, What other things this update fixes?

  • Julio Ernesto

Has anyone been able to come to the official forums?

  • Bezarloss

Had no audio since NXE, downloaded the update earlier but no change, still no audio and the HDMI cable still thinks its a VGA cable!!!

    Arghhhhhhhh!!!

  • OrionnoirO

Had this for a week or so (the dash update) and had no problems before or after updating, on my Elite.

  • HunCity87

@AlexKokonas I know what you mean! Happens to me lots…

  • Joergen8

No HDMI issues here but good to know. My friend’s Samsung doesnt work with VGA on a launch box, and the same box works on two different Sony LCD I’ve tried. Oh well, I guess Samsung forgot they were 360 launch partners.

  • Joergen8

Bezarloss? Is it hooked to a DVI port with DVI-adaptor? Try a different HDMI port on your TV. I guess you’ve already done that :(

I didnt even know the 360 HDMI knows to be a DVI cable and offer VGA resolutions? Then again I dont have a HDMI-DVI converter to test with.

  • d witty10

dont know if this has ever been brought up, but how about a notice when someone on our friends signs off.

  • Anonymous

works with my Toshiba 40RV525U now

  • MACPH1ST0

@ Julio Ernesto: Everything on xbox.com is down for some reason. I get “Sorry, this page is unavailable” for anything I try to navigate to on the site now.

  • Firecrest

I know it’s been said in here before, but any word on an update that fixes the crashing guide menu that occurs when icons fail to load? It’s a pain in the butt and sometimes results in games stuttering and party disconnects.

  • DarkSpartan017

You know it’s kinda funny my elite is now giving me video issues through component cables now (A very colorful and distored display of reds blues and greens on the screen. Since I updated this afternoon and had no issues before.I’m wondering if this update has broken something in my system or just a case of bad luck. Just seeing if anybody else is having non hdmi problems now besides me?

  • MrMrSaysHi

I tried to update, but now my 360 (w/hdmi) is useless. I can’t even get past beyond the “update failed” screen to get to my dashboard. Did anyone else have this problem? “Can’t update your console. Please contact Xbox Customer Support or go to http://www.xbox.com/support” “PV:2.0.7357.0 CV:2.0.7363.0″

Been speaking with customer service just under 2 hours, and they haven’t had a clue. Hopefully, they’ll get back to me soon.

  • darkjester74

Hey Larry, some feedback for the Live team:

Just wanted to say this was the jankiest system update I have seen on XBL. My 360 had to reboot no less than 3 times to complete the update, and my unit doesn’t even have an HDMI port. No big deal, just wanted to pass that along.

  • HalfManHalfTaco

Is this the same update that got pushed out last week? I didn’t receive any sort of update yesterday.

  • darkjester74

It seems many folks are having technical issues with this update, I’m sure the Live team is on it.

  • WonkyToad

Yea, it did not work for me either.
I updated last night and it looked like it loaded adn rebooted and loaded again.
But anyway, the HDMI connection is doing the exact same thing it was before.
No sound and the display options are no longer 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 720i, ect…

  • Saturn27

    Good morning, all,
I haven’t had any problems with my HDMI or with the update, but my brother-in-law called me last night and said that he got an e-74 message after his update. He called and was out of warranty since he bought his current console in Sept. of ’07 and they will charge him $100($99, actually) to fix his console.

I was wondering if there is any other remedy to this situation being that his console was working fine before the update.

  • Leoplureodon

    Awesome, they finally fixed it.

Only problem is, I’m still having the same problem.

  • WonkyToad

Did this work for anyone who was having the HDMI issue?

  • Joergen8

Hey I noticed an actual fix! BF: Bad Company now has a boxshot in the dashboard! It was mighty stupid showing an empty space in your game history and when friends were playing it.

  • hyghwayman

Got the orders to up-date last night, no problems before or after up-date :) .

    hyghwayman

  • ubi man

Updated last night(3rd February 2009) rebooted, RRoD.

  • Bezarloss

@Joergen8 – The HDMI cable is connected to the consoles port and the other end goes straight into the HDMI port on my tv (Sony KDL-32S3000), i’ve tried all the ports but nothing.

Its says VGA in the corner of my TV screen when I turn it on. When I go to the console display settings it only offers resolutions and not 1080p, 1080i etc.

Leoplureodon – What TV are you using?

  • DaddyFatSacks70

This update bricked my Elite console. Unacceptable. I have not had any issues with my xbox until I downloaded this “update”. Shortly after, I recieved the 1 red ring and an e-74 error message(GPU unit) Xbox support tried to tell me it was a hardware problem with my console. I find it hard to believe that my xbox, that has been running great for two years, decided to die shortly after the update. Check out xbox.com forums and you will see I am not the only having these issues.

  • Joergen8

Bezarloss: I have a KDL-40U2000 for my gaming TV and its connected via VGA, but I did try the HDMI when the NXE came out and it worked just like the component cable. For my Sony that doesnt offer truescan/overscan option I use the VGA cable for optimal image quality.

A silly idea you could try is to connect a loose VGA cable to the Sony VGA port with nothing on the other end.

  • Joergen8

It could also be that the HDMI cable is borked so it acts like a hdmi-dvi converter (less connectors).

  • GM80

Unbelievable. I’ve never had any problems with audio over HDMI prior to yesterday. Then I installed the update, and *bam* audio dropouts all day.

Are you freakin’ kidding me, Microsoft?

  • GM80

I’d also like to add that now my TV no longer says “1080p” on the 360′s input info, but rather “1920×1080@60hz.” I’m not sure why it would differentiate between the two, but something’s changed.

  • GM80

Sorry for the triple post, but I actually got a fix from MS tech support just now: Restart the console, and hold down Y+RT during the boot screen. This resets/restores video settings, and everything including audio is back to normal. Never would have guessed that in a million years.

  • OSUZOO08

yeah never got the message to update but about 3 weeks ago my system updated but none of my friends did kinda weird but does not matter because I have a non hdmi 360 anyway

  • six100dollarman

box is freezing and now distorted video and freezing. never had a freeze until after the update. 18 month old Elite is now on death row. now what?

  • RevoBHRX

Hi, I have VIEWSONIC VX2835WM 28″ LCD monitor connected to my Elite xbox console.
I had problems about getting signal from HDMI on previous dashboard.
After fall update and with the new dashboard I could use HDMI properly.
Whenever I started console “DVI” was displayed and I had clear/loseless and full-hd image on my screen.

But after the last update, I lost this perfect image and I only have 480P resolution now :(
    I upset by this last update/fix :( ((

Did you test this fix for LCD monitor displays by different vendors?
I am unhappy with that fix.
I had no problem about HDMI, but I have now :( ((((
Please show me the way that I uninstall/rollback this update.

    Thank you

  • aliko

OMG!! THIS UPDATE HAS CORRUPTED MMY VIDEO! IT JUST FREEZES AND CRASHES! WTF MS? HOW TO FIX IT???

  • Secret Fuller

I want a update that would allow me to play 60Hz games on my 50Hz TV

  • macac013

I got this update a few weeks ago, when random people were getting it. I installed it, and the dashboard version said I was running the new version, but Live still thought I needed the update. I got stuck in a loop of “You need to update” and then “Update Failed”, and couldn’t sign in to Live for a week. I spent 11 hours talking to people who didn’t speak English and hadn’t gotten the memo on the randomly exclusive update, and so couldn’t help me. Everyone i spoke to thought I was having trouble installing the NXE, regardless of how many times I explained it. I was told someone who had authority to do something would call me back, and never got a call.

It’s fine now, but I hope next time MS does an update, they let the folks in India and/or Mexico City know they did one. I honestly went crazy without my Xbox Live / streaming video / Media Center.

  • six100dollarman

ha ha, like clock work. terminated!

  • sgt caulk

I’d like to add my story to this. Before the update my display was setup at 1080p over HDMI. After the update I am no longer able to display 1080p through HDMI, it doesn’t even let me choose 1080p. I then hooked up my component cables to my 360 and they let me play at 1080p.

So I called microsoft, and they want me to send my console in.

  • WonkyToad

    Sgt caulk:
I feel your pain. Before the NXE I was running a lovely 1080 over HDMI. When I got the NXE I lost all sound and the display options were no longer 720i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, ect… They are now more like PC display settings (800×600, 1024×720, ect….)I work weird hours so I was emailing the MS helpdesk and it took 6 (yes 6) emails just to get someone to understand I was trying to use HDMI. I just kept getting, what I can assume, a form letted telling me to “try these options to correct my display for my VGA connection” (nothing about the sound problem, which is what the emails to them was about)And after over 2 weeks of emails and determining that evidently no one knew anything about this issue, they told me to send my unit in for repairs. I think they just got tired of me contacting them.

  • WonkyToad

Oh Yea, and this fixed changed nothing. Other than it taking longer to boot up now, there is no difference.

  • Rav3nDK

Damn update. Unfortunately I also installed this update yesterday, and since then I have had issues with my HDMI.

So to make it clear. I changed absolutely nothing in my setup. I have been using this setup for months – same HDMI cable, same monitor & same Xbox360 elite. I just booted my Elite yesterday and at that point – still running in 1080p. Answered yes to apply update, and after first reboot I could see that resolution had gone out the window, but figured – hey I can just go change once it has finished applying second update – but noooooooooo.

Before update everything was great and all resolutions 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p could be selected and was working on my screen.

NOW – only 480p is selectable.

And talk about lack of support. They are all saying the same standard answers. After spending hours talking to both US, Danish & Swedish support – same result.

“Well there should be no issues with this patch” – yeah right. Typical Microsoft – there’s NEVER any issues with their software :o LOOOOL

And in relation to their answer, they wont even report this as an issue. Thanks for nothing Microsoft Support.

So I guess good old Major Nelson is my only bet as to reporting this as an issue. Hopefully they will acknowledge this and start working on a patch.

  • LetsHideNSeek

  • Stryderunknown

I’m no expert in the field, however I’ve just debugged my initial problem. First off after the update I lost my HDMI sound while still having the phono output from the Digital Audio Connection on the back of my Elite. (I use to get sound through both)

I checked the Audio options to see if some new setting had stopped the audio output, but there was nothing there.

I then decided to change the screen resolution from 1080p to 1080i, suddenly I realised I had regained my sound. With this I then changed back to 1080p and again I still had sound. It made me realise that the update itself can require a reconfiguration to get things running smoothly again. I’d suggest those that have had an RRoD try connecting with their Composite leads first and then reconfigure it back to their HDMI. Incidentally some older screens had the “prototype” HDMI compliance which was never fully HD which might cause these odd errors with people losing resolution.

Of course I’d ask for confirmation from people that know more about HDMI.

Speaking of updates.. I am still lacking H.264 and DivX/XviD support when using the Extender funtionality in the Xbox 360.

Major, I really hope you and your team will make the Xbox 360 and Windows Media Center THE BEST media center software out there by adding Extender support for DivX, XviD and H264 (aswell as MKV ofcourse, the open source H264 container that is the de facto standard for distributing hi definition content online).

With the Transcode 360 software available even for VMC, not adding support for these media formats is just a really disturbing argument to why one should be looking at alternative media center softwares and ways to distribute them to all displays in your own home. :(

It’s a real shame, because the only reason I have bought a total of 5 xbox 360 to begin with is due to the media center functionality that is awesome – besides this “little” thing missing.

Thanks to the update, my 360 now freezes at launch or RRODs. Considering tons of people are experiencing the same issues, it’s not just a “coincidence”
