Gears of War 2 Achievement Hacking: Banning has begun…

As you know, we are committed to keeping Xbox LIVE a safe and fair place to play for the more than 17 million active members. As part of our regular safety monitoring we have pinpointed a group of players who have unlocked specific Gears of War 2 Achievements through an unauthorized hack. Deliberate cheats like these are in direct violation of the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use and will not be tolerated. As I post this, we’ve begun taking steps to reset the Gamerscores of the offending players.  As I have mentioned in the past, this is something we do occasionally to keep the service free of cheating in order to maintain a fair and level playing field for everyone. If you play fair and earn your achievements without glitching or cheating, you have nothing to worry about. Read my original post that shows what a cheater looks like and head over to Xbox.com to read the Gamerscore correction FAQ that may answer some of your questions.

Who cares?. The glitch in question was a flaw in Epic’s buggy as hell Gears2 and had no affect on actual gameplay (they even knew about this glitch since Gears1 but failed to patch it!!). This news of Microsoft banning?, resetting scores? (it’s not clear which) has no real affect on anybody. Why don’t Microsoft spend more time concentrating on fixing the broken NXE!!. I’m sick of that thing freezing on me!. Better yet why don’t Epic make a game that isn’t FULL of exploitable bugs!. Microsoft should ban Epic for constantly F’ing up.

I think the focus should be put for the people that lag switching or glitching in the game. I don’t care so much for Gamerscore tampering as long as they play fair in the game but I got really mad when they start using lag switch or tampering with their connection so they can win the game easily. I am pretty sure there has been so many complaints from Gears of War 2 fans out there regarding cheater in the game.

  • Number 905

Now let’s try caring about games that aren’t part of the Gears of War and Halo franchises.

  • AlexKokonas

As Marcus would say “Nice Scratch one Grub”

  • SteelCity Beast

My friend hacked for this achievement HE DOESNT EVEN HAVE THE MAPS!!! and still has the achievement????

  • Sim31

Does anyone know anybody that has been banned for this yet? Im just curious to see the gamertag profiles on xbox live to just look at the little banner underneath there gamertag that says the cheater thing! That is for GOW2

  • Joergen8

All efforts towards curbing (curb stomping) cheaters is welcome but in this case I feel Epic is mostly to blame. Their lack of quality control and regard for their loyal fans has poisoned the air around both Gears games for the past three years now. Epic has shoveled glitches and cheats in our faces so much so that for many months the only way to compete in their games was to heavily exploit any of the numerous glitches available.

For all the times I’ve been lag switched, bridged, weapon slided, crab walked, monkey handed, host quitted and then humped by these brats Epic created I’ve sworn never to touch their products again. I gave them a chance with Gears2 and they pissed all over me and my friends in a way none of us expected in our worst nightmares.

Gears3 is an absolute, 100% no buy until the bargain bin. I’m sure it cant even be bought second-hand as half the game will be unlocked with a unique one-time key.

  • Major Nelson

Let me clarify, in the headline for this post I say banning. We’re just doing the gamerscore reset. I wanted to to clarify. We do banning all the time as well, but that’s another story.

  • AlexKokonas

do they lose all gamerscore or just for gears 2?

You are banished from the realm! Big brother is watching.

  • DmetallicA

It’s so funny how they advertise themselves as using the gamerscore glitches on YOUTUBE!!! How can people be SOOO STUPID… lol. They deserve what they get, well done Xbox admins for being on the ball.

  • Honeycut1

BRAVO! Glad to see something was being done about these folks!

  • Honeycut1

@AlexKokonas, there is a guy on my friends list that had his entire gamerscore reset because of the Gears 2 glitch. It was dumb for him to it, no reason he can be pissed about it either.

  • Cobra842

How about requiring game developers to fix glitched achievements and to award players achievements that are unattainable like the one in NBA live 06 that you cant get because the servers are shut down…

  • excommodog
  • Alphos

You have a lot of work banning and reseting XD

  • Jaiyan

Installing GoW2 to my hard drive at Christmas wiped my gamesave for some bizarre reason. As a result, although I’ve completed all levels on Insane, as half of them were before my profile was wiped I don’t have the Insane completion and a few other achievements that I would have got if my original save wasn’t wiped, and won’t get them unless I complete it on Hardcore and then Insane yet again.

To be honest I’m not bothered in the slightest :p But still, point remains. Dodgy dashboard coding cheated me *out* of achievements that I’ve earnt, so reset the scores of the relevant Devs :p

  • Exiled Legend

Me and my bro were playing split screen when I was at his house and he was getting achievements for me ranking up, i hope he doesn’t get punished.

Good. I hate cheaters on games like Gears! >.<

  • Disco Penguins

My only problem with this whole thing is that someone seems to be pawning this problem on the hackers and game savers, but in reality, Epic knew about this glitch since last November when Gears 2 first came out. The same exact glitch that is used for the level 100s is the same glitch people were using to get Party Like It’s 1999 and Seriously 2.0 back in November and December.

Personally, I think it’s Epic’s fault. They allowed for the same kind of glitch to happen in Gears 1, and no one did anything about it. Apparently they were able to patch that one, but they’ve let half a year go by before even thinking about fixing this problem.

In reality, Epic just needs to put a patch out to stop people from doing this, but unfortunately, Gamesavers will always be able to use the already unlocked achievements for their own using.

  • Hawaiian c

hey what if you was falsely accuse do you keep a record if we can prove it was not us the user i mean if not chee that will suck if the xbox buggs out i mean just saying..

  • Anonymous

Well… if Epic started fixing the game instead of making it $^&#ier than it is from the start people wouldn’t even think about boosting.

  • Richlough

What if you don’t get an achievemenet because of a glitch?

My friend is unable[the game won’t let him]to get the Left for Dead ‘Big Drag’ achievement.
Is there a solution for this?

  • Robert Hathorne

Isn’t this a little harsh? Shouldn’t the cheaters just get the scores reset for games they’ve cheated in. The punishment doesn’t seem to fit the crime; it’s like a life sentence for petty theft.

  • Sneeches

got nothing to worry about here, i didn’t glitch for any of my gamerscore. :)

  • wolfzero01

glad to see this happening, as you have to be a real loser to glitch your way to a higher gamerscore which doesn’t get you anything anyway

  • Logic Squirrel

    muhahaha nice.

  • Gangsta Grillz

    Gow2 is garbage…..

  • WoolyMammoth27

Am I the only one who hasn’t come across a Level 100 yet? :S

  • Izer

I’ve seen 5 of them since the “rank” update. I wonder if they are all targeted by this. hahahha :)

  • GoobTuff

Great news. I always love it when cheaters get what they deserve.

  • Quicksand

Excellent! Nice to know you guys are watching for that.

  • Custom Casket

Holy crap, alright. Entirely too many people going along with this.

HOW ABOUT MICROSOFT FOCUSES ON FIXING THE NXE. I don’t care if it’s your servers or the coding on the NXE. I’d like to have a usable Xbox 360 again. That laggy guide is completely unnacceptable.

    FIX IT.

  • IconicSoulJA
  • MadMojo

    Suckers! Heheh.

  • BeAkErOo

I don’t think people who got the odd achievement here or there by accident have any worries here people, I think it will be more likely targeting the real glitchers like this guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy4SsAQ_aq4&feature=PlayList&p=771B20A8739305BF&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=2

he sells glitched achievements, making up to $50 for 50k of glitched achievements

    ban those cheating b@$t**d$

  • BeAkErOo
  • WiCkEd Co 80

LMAO all they way back to ZERO, LOL….I wish I could see their faces

  • SkaMike

Good to see, Power to the people who actually deserve their gamerscore.

  • MrGreen13

Good Work..but I would like to see more done about cheaters effecting the actual game play experience on xbox live.

Still, good to see them doing something to try to make Live a more honest place.

  • threeleggedcow

Meh, I think MS should focus their time fixing the real issues (the laggy guide!) and the source of this exploit.

  • DontStopMeNow01

    kick A

  • Doctor Seleski

Other than having a higher gamerscore, what benefits did these gamers get from this glitch?

  • TheBeast2316

Nice, Don’t cheat and they would not have to take these steps. I think they should be labled cheaters on their gamertags so that everyone who runs into them will know whats up. also it will prevent others from doing it in the futur.

  • Lucky 13 X

    Good work.

  • Wikkiwild1

    This is good news.

  • Surly x Duff

I’m glad the Xbox team is doing something about this. But honestly, there are a lot of other issues that directly affect user experience that nothing is being done about. These guys glitched to get an achievement and higher gamerscores. Big whoop. How about addressing the broken NXE? The stability issues in party chat? The freezing every time I hit the guide button? The ridiculous wait for arcade game lists to populate? The IP attacks on players using (and paying for) your service?

This is kinda like giving tickets to jaywalkers when you have looters plundering people’s houses.

I understand the team at Xbox can walk and chew gum at the same time, but I’d like to see some progress on these other fronts. Or, at least a “hey, we’re working on it, stay tuned.” Right now, we’re not hearing anything.

  • Matu Flp Krawfe

    @Surly x Duff

Just because a cop gives a few jaywalkers some tickets doesn’t mean that the whole of the police force is preoccupied with that one seemingly trivial task especially when that one task is, by in large, automated.

  • YrX

lol @ noone on my FR having 0 gamerscore..

  • Mikelarry85

lol good one mn its beyond me why people cheat why risk cheating to get banned or even worse the gamescore boost you so preciously care about gets reset to zero.
