Deal, Marketplace By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • Chitwood7412

Already have it, Plus if people wait a month they can get it free with the Dark Corners add-on. Was hopen for another great deal on an Arcade title, I can wait.

  • N3WB13 R0N

Great buy so i will wait till July though sorry microsoft.. no money this week maybe next week.. lol then again probly next week.. Magic the gathering XBLA is coming out!! WHOOO HOO!!!

  • noddegamra uk

Damn, I have this already. I could have done with the other one coming down in price.
+ For those who have no GoW DLC yet, this is a sneaky move from MS as like Chitwood7412 said, the Dark Corners add-on is coming out soon. It’s cheaper to wait for that and get it in the bundle.

  • Anonymous

Don’t have this, but this is pointless seeing as you can get it free next month, so once again, another lame deal of the week I bet a few suckers will jump on this and not realize it will be free with the Dark Corners Map Pack.

  • I Scarface UK I

Seems like Microsoft is trying to get as much money as possible

  • CALZ88

@kigmal its only included with the retail box of the map pack

  • oO MG81 Oo

Too bad the Gears2 multiplayer is horrible. They should make deal of the week a half price arcade game or something everybody can make use of.

  • quikDC

At least it isnt a deal for a two year old game like it usually is

  • Anonymous

    Lame again.

  • KP ScuzzyBunny

For those of you who do not know, THERE IS NO RETAIL VERSION of the Dark Corners Add-On! Due to fan outcry, it was canceled (so go get your $5 back if you reserved it!)…now it is only going to be released digitally, with the new map pack at 1200 pts, and the bundle (new maps plus all 3 other map packs…2 post release and Flashback) for 1600 pts.

Like others have said, this “deal” is only for people out of the loop…definitely a better deal to wait a month, and get everything at once, for $20 (1600pts), rather than buying it in pieces.

  • Harteex

Would love a deal of the week on Crackdown DLC

  • Anonymous

Yeah, they did cancel the retail version of dark corners. Oh well, Gears 2 multiplayer is still horrible. I’m not going to buy maps for a broken game. After 3 TU, they still can’t get it right, but at least they are in the right direction. Stick to Halo 3 if you want a good online multiplayer experience.

  • UKresistance

Thank you killer scuzzy for explaining why another of these “Deals” suck yet again.

  • Alphos

I’m sure most people want Arcade games on Deals of the week, not map packs, vehicle packs and similars…

  • Surly x Duff

Meh. I’ve waited this long to buy the maps, no reason to jump on this before the All Fronts collection is released. Too bad the retail version was dumped–I was looking forward to it. I’d rather have a disc for $20 than a digital copy for $15. But that’s just me.

  • moocow21

Wow… I’ve been waiting for this deal since the Combustible pack came out. It should be free by now (should have been free to start with, but that’s another matter), but they can’t even lower it to 400pts? I would have caved in at 400 since I have 420 leftover points, but now I’ll just bide my time until All Fronts Collection.

  • L0rN

The latest entry on the Arcade Hits came half a year ago. UPDATE THIS, GET THE GUIDE FIXED, MAKE THE MARKETPLACE faster. DO YOUR JOB RIGHT MS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And don`t bother us with this crap. There are not only 10 year old kids playing on the xbox. And if you call this or all the other “deals” a “Deal of the week” then you are just plain stupid or you think that a 26 year old guy like me is stupid. YOUR CHOICE.

  • CoatedTrout

“Seems like Microsoft is trying to get as much money as possible”

    MICROSOFT?

    A BUSINESS?

    MAKING MONEY?!

    You must be bloody insane!

Also Gears 2 MP is horrible Lolololol I’m going to bash it on every article that mentions the game.

  • AIaskanGrown

yeah Microsoft were all idiots. lets buy your “DEAL” before its free.

thanks for treating us like fools.

  • Keeby Boy

Gears 2 multiplayer is fine after three updates… not horrible.

  • Codename 76

I downloaded this map pack when it first came out I think I’ve only played it once. I remember back in the good old pc days they would release map packs for FREE. You only have to pay for expansion packs that had REAL content.

  • moocow21

    @Keeby Boy,
Agreed, Gears 2 multiplayer may have been borderline horrible for a while after launch, but since TU3 and the recent smoke greande nerf I think it is borderline awesome.

    @Codename 76,
Alas, those WERE the good ol’ days. But with the advent of the Marketplace all we get now-a-days is money pinching “DLC”. At least Valve still dishes out free stuff on a regular basis, and even Epic released a lot of free content for Unreal Tournament 3 on PC — too bad they can’t do the same on Xbox with Gears (I assume because of their publisher).

  • oO MG81 Oo

    @Keeby Boy
Compared to any other 360 multiplayer it stinks. Epic are clueless when it comes to fixing their buggy game. 3 updates and it’s still a heap of junk. Red Faction, L4D, COD and Halo are all far superior online experiences.

I wish they’d just give us half price arcade games for deal of the week in future.

  • Vasilii Zaytsev

I’d pay for working multiplayer before I buy DLC

  • yolarrydabomb

People should wait for the big pack. This will be included on the big pack!

  • Specter0890

when is it gonna be free?

  • BustedChain

This was a much better release than some of the other crap they have come out with, but they still need to work on discounting that people want. One way is to try to appeal to more people by offering the discount on 2 DLC items at once.

The best way would be to do 1 arcade game and 1 DLC… or more (2 arcade games and 2 DLC…that would be much better and provide people with options.)

  • Rick Dias PK

Wait, what? Is this true, that it’s basically a last-minute money grab on their part for something that will be bundled in a more economically priced product just a month from now? If so, I am very disappointed. I do not play Gears of War 2, but if I did, I suspect this offer would insult me rather than entice me. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’m insulted anyway since the weekly deal could have been better used on something else.

Microsoft, please quit doing this sort of thing to premium service customers. Nintendo’s continued “lol, it prints money!” behavior was a large chunk of what drove me away from them and over to the 360 in the first place. But if I continue to feel insulted and exploited by you guys in turn, I might start looking at the PS3 a lot more closely.

I know others have said it before, but I will repeat it: You should take more cues from Valve Software and their Steam service. They know how to maintain customer good-will and offer genuine bargains that leave everyone walking away happy; you would do well to imitate them.

  • A Place for Us

Nope. Would prefer more maps for the first game, since that multiplayer works better.

  • MACPH1ST0

@ L0rN: According to Marc Whitten, the guide and marketplace have already been fixed. http://twitter.com/notwen/status/1996326877

  • oO MG81 Oo

    @MACPH1ST0
They might have found and fixed some of the performance issues but they haven’t released any updates to users yet. I’m guessing that twitter post you linked to was in regards to work being done on the next dash update. There has definitely been no guide/Marketplace performance improvement on my 360. Mine still hangs when accessing the guide while in game.

  • KP ScuzzyBunny

…if that is the case I might have to test my guide! I have had so much trouble that I simply do my “browsing” on the site, and very rarely access any of the marketplace from my 360. It is true that most of the problems were from either having a lot of info on your profile (lots of achvs or Arcade games), and the 120gb HDD being near full caused a significant difference from when it was half full (I try to only play games installed to drive, and it takes up space pretty quick), but like so many others have said, why should I have to leave half my drive empty in order to use the Marketplace?

Now I only have two issues…first, why can’t they make the “video/ screenshots” blade OPTIONAL (can’t tell me that it doesn’t slow down performance), and second, does anyone know how to “reset” your Avatar options (or maybe “un-reset” is the better term)? For whatever reason I only have the very first set of clothes, and none of the new stuff shows up on anyone’s profile on my 360…very strange.

  • MACPH1ST0

@ oO MG81 Oo: At least we know they’ve already fixed it and that hopefully they’ll be rolling out the update to everyone soon! :)

  • YaoIsGod

This was the only map pack I didn’t have, so I went ahead and got it. Good deal.

  • threeleggedcow

Can someone translate this into a normal currency, like US DOLLARS!?!

  • oAssassin Xo

As others have said MS is scaring people to go buy PS3. After E3 I will say 360 stills is great but even I am considering a PS3 now. I am getting sick of being nickeled and dimed by MS. Like they say they are releasing that “free game” called Joy Ride.
    .
    .
Catch? Oh right…..anything else for the game cost money. Gee sound familiar? lol.
    .
    .
And BTW anyone saying “Company wanting money! WOW!” MS makes billions. Its not some small company. They could release GOW games for free ant not really feel the pinch from it. If it was any other company then I’d understand.
    .
    .
Lets also not forget while most of us are trying to get by in the crappy economy MS is still screwing us over. Anybody see the article by, forgot now, some developer. He said hes disgusted that MS and Sony won’t lower their price after E3. He said they are more worried about money then helping people out. I wonder what it takes for these mega companies to realize money isn’t everything. You can attract more people now if you help them. Hey…when someone like Sony or MS has to file bankruptcy they won’t get any sympathy from me. They deserve it as far as I am concerned. :/

  • YaoIsGod

You are complaining that the 360 won’t have a second price drop? It is already the cheapest system on the market. Complain much?

  • sho220

this is the worst deal of the week by far. seeing as all fronts is coming out soon, why would you want to buy this now? however, all fronts is a great deal at $20 and i will be picking that up day 1.

  • L0rN

Thanks for the Link Macphisto. Nice to see, that they got it fixed. But I want to have it fixed on my console ;) .
And if this is really rolling out with the next dashboardupdate coming out in fall instead of giving us the fix right now, then I would be QUITE disappointed. Cause this is no new feature.

  • MACPH1ST0

Yeah L0rN, it would be nice if they released the performance update ASAP since the system really needs it now, instead of just adding it in with the major fall update. But considering their track record on the release of past dashboard updates, I certainly won’t be holding my breath on that one. :(

  • Moon Vydeo

    Dear Major,

I love the idea of Deal of the Week. BUT…. You really need to have a long talk with whoever comes up with these deals. This one could have used a little better prior planning.

    http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/06/08/gears-2-combustible-map-pack-is-xboxs-insulting-deal-of-the-wee/

    Quote;

“That comes to a grand total of $32 dollars, $12 more expensive than purchasing All Fronts, which includes all of this stuff (and more!) for 1600 ($20) when it releases July 28. It’s a sucker punch (not the good kind) for this content to go on sale now.”

  • Exu

    1. I’ll wait for All Fronts and then not buy that.
    2. Fix the laggy guide.
    3. Deals of the week need to have a better quality to crap ratio, maybe multiple deals in a week?
    4. Fix the laggy guide.
    5. More permanent price drops are required, maybe open up a DLC Bargain Basement and add more Arcade Hits.
    6. Fix the laggy guide.
    7. Really old crap nobody bought first time round should be free, CoD2 maps, Kameo modes and PGR3 cars still cost money for goodness’ sake!
    8. Fix the laggy guide.

  • Ollyh

Wasn’t interested then, I’m not interested now.

  • II W4RLORD II

I bought this when it first came out and I have got cheated on or the teams were way uneven every time I played under the combustible map option. The maps do look good, but I don’t have this problem on the other maps.I guess the cheaters and beta testers prefer these maps?Ridiculous.

  • ToothlessFrog

And don’t forget, Iron Maiden for Rock Band 2 this week! YES!!! Some real metal!

  • The chenry

Not exactly the most well received deal, eh Major? I know it wasn’t your idea though, and it must be tough getting the brunt of user diatribe just because you’re public. If you could, please pass on up the following information: a discount on a product we’re getting in a bundle in a few months is not much of a bargain. I mean, it doesn’t really affect us all that much. We just look at it and go “huh, that’s dumb”. But you guys? There’s man hours behind this, right? You have to set stuff up in the back-end and actually plan out the promotions and stuff.

Who thought this would be a good idea?

  • Sticky Owens

Its a good deal, its just at the wrong time considering whats coming up in a few weeks time :D

i agree that after title update 3, the multiplayer is a hell of a lot better

  • oO MG81 Oo

Gears map packs used to be free, or at least became free after a set amount of time. What happened to those days?. And they couldn’t just make this half price?, what’s with the 560 price tag?. Why not just make it and easy to handle number like 500 or 400?. That way people wont be left with unusable MSP change.

And please if you’ve identified and solved the guide performance issues then can you release a patch to customers before the main dash update?. I was wanting to buy some Rock Band songs today but gave up looking because the lists and info were taking soooooo long to populate. That can’t be good for sales.

  • Latin Trident

Why so cheap MS? Really? $1 saving!?? And for content that will be free next month?! Please get somebody with a brain in marketing!!!!

  • MACPH1ST0

For everyone turned off by the Deals of the Week lately, it looks like they’re listening and are definitely turning things around in a big way this month! The details for the Deals for the rest of the month have already been released:

June 15-21: Fallout 3, Operation Anchorage, 560 Microsoft Points

June 22-28: Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, XBLA, 800 Microsoft Points

June 29- July 5: Fable 2, Knothole Island, 560 Microsoft Points

[Details via latest issue of OXM]

  • MurdrA

Not everyone is going to buy “Dark Corners”. So really, The price is not that bad. The only bad thing is that, the combustible is the worst map pack they have released. lol.

  • Keeby Boy

    @ oO MG81 Oo

That unusable MSP change adds up to more Rock Band songs. :)

  • MACPH1ST0

As far as unusable MSP change goes, that may thankfully be a thing of the past! Microsoft announced that as part of the Games on Demand feature that will be coming to NXE, people will be able to purchase these games directly using a credit or debit card WITHOUT the need for MSP. It’s only going to be used for Games on Demand for now so they’re not totally giving up on MSP just yet. But judging by their response, it seems like they’re open to the idea of making it service-wide if it becomes popular enough and more people demand it. http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/696372/Microsoft-Wont-Commit-To-Real-Money-Transactions-Across-Xbox-Live.html

  • HFC

Yep. Wait for Dark Corners next month methinx.

  • oO MG81 Oo

    @Keeby Boy
That’s true. Rock Band and it’s DLC is too damn addictive :-) .

    @MACPH1ST0
That would be much better. You’d no longer need to drop a lump of cash on big bundles of MSP. Instead just spend what you want when you want. But I bet they keep the MSP system because it’s probably more accessible/customer friendly for Live users under 18 and people who don’t have access to credit/debit cards etc.
