It’s Sega Genesis day on Xbox Live Arcade

…or i can haz sega genesis yayz! (token lolspeak for now, i’m slammed today, more later)

It’s XBLA Wednesday and we’ve got six Sega Genesis classics for you.  They’re 400 MIcrosoft Points each, and are available in all Xbox Live countries.

Altered Beast (add to queue)

Comix Zone (add to queue)

Gunstar Heroes (add to queue)

Phantasy Star II (add to queue)

Shinobi (add to queue)

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (add to queue)

I don’t know about you, but I spent a lot of time in college playing on my Genesis while I should’ve been studying.  As most of my Genesis collection has fallen prey to the mist of time, I’m very happy to have Gunstar Heroes and the rest back where I can get my paws on them.

Now I just need to find some time to play this week so that I can put some distance on Major’s gamerscore…

I never owned a Genesis, and only played a few games on my friends system. No nostalgic value here.. unless they give me Sega Bass Fishing.

  • RidinSlow

This whole “i can haz” thing is really bad. Are we seriously moving towards a society similar to that in the movie “Idiocracy” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/)? This phrase is more grammatically incorrect than “i got my hair did.”

  • Shadowed Ghost

    snap it’s e

  • MACPH1ST0

@ RidinSlow: Are you really taking lolspeak THAT seriously?

  • Shonk

They should have done a buy 5 get one free or something
with releasing so many games in one hit

  • rastansaga

don’t understand why anybody would want to play crappy Genesis conversions over the arcade originals. count me out

  • Evocore RINALDO

nice, but it will be better if they put also:

    Shining Force 2
    Fatal Labyrinth
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
    Shining Force 1

My only beef with this is that it comes so close on the heels of the collection release, WITHOUT a fair announcement. Comix Zone was the only game I really cared about in the entire collection and if SEGA had announced that they would be releasing these games on XBLA before the collection was released, I would not have wasted, er… spent good money on the collection. I’ll probably buy CZ again since it’s only $5, but it still stinks of double-dipping.

    Hey E,
    Xbox.com is down!

    Cheers

  • Exu

Fact is, these games won’t come down in price, ever. Meanwhile, the Mega Drive Ultimate Collection will, so I can just take this opportunity to BUY SONIC 3 AGAIN LOL and then pick the disc up later on for the other four games.
I say other four because, well, had to have Gunstar what with it being not on the disc, online, and TOTALLY AWESOME.

Oh yeah before I forget, news from the rumour factory! WARNING: TEXT INCOMING.
    -
Apparently next week we have King of Fighters 98, oh-so-smartly priced at 1200 and releasing in the same month that Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 comes out for the same price, and HD Remix drops to 800 for a week. Wow.
NOTE: This is only conjecture, as far as I’m aware neither the game’s long overdue release or price have been outright set in stone. If it is indeed 1200, bad move.

Topping off next week’s return to expensive form is Sam & Max Save the World for 1600… which sounds costly but is actually fairly good when you think about it, but then when you think about it you then realise Wallace & Gromit was one episode for 800, yet this is six for twice that.
Proof of this release is here: http://www.telltalegames.com/community/blogs/id-461

Also, just to do my fellow gamers a service, you can play a PC episode for free here: http://www.telltalegames.com/store/samandmax
“Abe Lincoln Must Die” is $0.00.

So to sum up, that’s five games released this week that are already on a disc, then an overpriced 2D fighter coming out when better is available, and a episodic series comes out with no split purchase option and a price that makes another series by the same developer look like a ripoff by comparison.
Oh Arcade, you are silly sometimes, but I still love you.

  • threeleggedcow

“Wait Sonic 3? since whne it got in the marketplace? didn’t know that!”

    Since today, lol.

  • TaygetaVendetta

@Exu where did you hear that King of Fighters 98UM was coming out next week? And how is it a ripoff at 1200 points? That is 5 dollars less than the PS2 version, which lacks online play/leaderboards.

  • LordBBH

I too would like to know where this source is that claims KOF98 Ultimate Match is coming out next week. I have no problem with paying 1200 points for it if the netplay is good.

  • RidinSlow

    @MACPH1ST0

I don’t take it seriously. It’s not even that bad in a text message or a tweet. It’s annoying to actually hear someone talk like that. No; it doesn’t bother me much that it’s used in this blog post. Yes; it does bother me when both e and Major Nelson are talking like that on the podcast.

I don’t really get the “i can haz” phrase anyway. It takes just as long to type, but makes you sound ignorant. I know it’s all in good fun, but some people take it too far in an effort to create or extend a fad.

  • Warrengonline

    @RidinSlow
“What you say? Boy hush yo mouf!” (can you name the song) :)

But I understand the idle frustration, I remember when a friend said something about me being one his peeps. I kid you not, I was baffled for THREE DAYS on “What in the world does he mean ‘peep’!?” One of his peoples.. with an ‘s’. Ironically, I felt so stupid. The “I haz…” is forever empowered, why? Those cats.

  • MACPH1ST0

@ Warrengonline: Did you think he was calling you a marshmallow? lol

  • Exu

KOF98 being priced too high is simply my opinion, I like KOF but I don’t feel like it’s worth 1200 in lieu of other games.
It seems more on a par with SF2 Hyper Fighting. Added to that, Fatal Fury Special set a precedent for SNK fighters being 400, and we know Samurai Shodown paid the price by people not paying the price, especially after it was advertised at 400.
Just because it’s cheaper than the PS2 version doesn’t make this a good deal, just means that’s an even bigger ripoff.
Personally I feel that pricing it at 1200 only puts off non-fans, and releasing it at the same time as MvC2 and an SF2HD price drop is simply folly, only serving to reduce the userbase even further.

As for sources to the release, well it’s just been floating around GameFAQs and Wiki and the like so far so as I said, nothing confirmed but the sudden rumour has to have come from somewhere.

  • Shonk

Well i wont be buying any 1200 or 1600 point games as usual

    i dont touch them

  • TaygetaVendetta

@Exu Its a more modern game that ST and has an enormous cast and depth. All while retaining great balance. Just because FFS (which is ancient and somewhat obscure) came out at 400 points doesn’t mean every game from SNK has to be cheap. KOF98UM at 1200 would be a steal.

  • Atomicow

5 of these games are in the Ultimate Genesis Collection. 5 games at 5 dollars a piece is $25. The UGC is 30 bucks. Why not spend $5 more and get an additional 40+ games?

  • SetoKaioX

Very Good (classicos de outras gerações).

  • WinterSnowblind

The save system in Sonic 3 has been butchered. Why did they replace it with a new menu? It means once you’ve finished the game, you can’t replay the levels unless you have a save state saved on each of them, and even then it’d be impossible to play through the whole thing with Super Sonic. Also, if you’re playing with Sonic & Tails, you can’t save at all!

Not worth the money because of that alone, and I’d seriously hope Sonic & Knuckles fixes that, once it’s released.

  • Exu

Right, KOF98 is still up in the air but turns out this week we’re getting Rocket Riot and some Magic-based game, as well as Sam and Max. Dunno the prices for those two.

  • aStrangeDisease

Sweet deal! I’m going to need some more points.
btw I don’t want the “Ultimate Genesis Collection.” Why would I waste $30 on games I don’t want? That’s like buying something I don’t need just because it’s on sale. Retailers love people like you.

  • murph17

    speaking of Genesis…

    NHL 94
    + updated rosters
    + online play
    = XBLA $$$$$$$$$$

who at EA do i need to talk to?

  • Beau Nidle

E: …and are available in all Xbox Live countries.

They’re not yet available in Australia :(
