Game Add-on, Marketplace By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

• K1LLER HORNET

Free on PC,
560 MS Points on X360…

No Thank You.

• Arsenic13

Its a shame Valve had to be bullied by MS to make this cost us. Is $50 a year not enough?

• MACPH1ST0

I thought this was going to be 800 points? Either way, it should be free like the Survival Pack was!

• Mcmax3000

Got it yesterday & played through it with a couple of people. Pretty fun. I think with it being shorter, it will be great in Versus.

• AnEternalEnigma

So, this is free on the PC and $7 on the 360? What a disaster.

I’d love for someone to explain this, but I know no one will.

• moocow21

Played it on my PC copy. It’s a pretty fun, albeit short level. The finale is really difficult and intense. I definitely wouldn’t pay a dime for it though. Do yourselves a favor and pick up the PC version on Steam within the next few days. You can get the full game + this DLC for just twice the price ($15) of this DLC on the Xbox.

• What the Geek

@AnEternalEnigma

It’s actually pretty easy to explain – Microsoft likes money.

• Red Dragon

MORAL OF THE STORY: Never buy Valve games on consoles. You’re just asking to get screwed.

• LightEco

I bought this and am very upset. The levels are broken so I can clip through game objects and doors and such. A friend over Live finished the first chapter without firing the cannon. Very poor quality valve. Not worth the $5.

• Mr Barrel Roll

Yeah, no.

• DMack CA

I didn’t want to buy it because I didn’t want to support the practice of charging for something that’s free on the pc, but whatever. It’s a pretty fun level.

• AutomaticOcelot

Priced = Is Valuable
Free = Is Value Added

Unfortunately the beancounter philosophy has won.

• chunkubis

so what happens to those of US who bought it right when it came out for 800 msp.

• Quaranj

I got it. Not bad for 560 as far as other paid DLC’s go. Shorter than expected, so I would have been upset if it had been 800 points. I see this as being really good for multi-player versus.

It does feel like we are getting the short-end of the stick though as for free vs. paid. If this boils down to hosting/bandwidth fees or whatnot, bump up live subscriptions another $5/$10 per account. The hidden hike is an easier pill to swallow than a double-standard.

That being said though, thank you, Valve. I do love me some zombie killing!

• JSupps

Didn’t Microsoft say a while back that if DLC was free anywhere else it would be free on the xbox?

• Anonymous

First Valve gets chewed out over people being butthurt about Left 4 Dead 2 and now Microsoft decides to set a price on DLC that was meant to be free, but instead they drop it 3 measly dollars. Bastards. Both the team responsible for setting prices on Marketplace at Microsoft & the crybabies about Left 4 Dead 2.

BTW, I have exactly 66MSP on my account that VERY useless right about now and is irritating to look at. What the hell can I buy with 66MSP on Marketplace? NOTHING! If I find something, ANYTHING for 60MSP on Marketplace, that means 6MSP of it will be stuck on my gamertag for good!

• Mcmax3000

@JSupps I would guess that only applies to other consoles.

• Gambit3rd

I’d like to see what Major Nelson have to say about this shame but I know he won’t say anything. Even worst.

I already decided, some time ago, not to buy this DLC. I gave MS my trust buying X360 as my main game platform and this is my reward? Crash Course is very short and adds no real value to the game. Someone claim it to have clipping glitches and there is plenty of ammo in the levels making them easier. And, of course, the DLC is totally FREE on the PC.

Why should we pay for this?

• Velete

Not the first or last game to have DLC that costs compared to the PC/PS3 version that lumps them in for free.

• kevlar35

Hang on. I got this the other day and I’m pretty sure I payed 800 points!

Can I check?

• tokerTM

yea way to rip of off microshaft.

glad i moved to the pc on this one, you are rip off merchants. the developer wants it to be free, but you wanna charge a stupid rate … you make enough frigign money from all the other poverpriced DLC and crpa you offer, least let the developer decide if there should be a charge.

EPIC FAIL

• Sly Jon

Please stop messing people about Microsoft, the XBL community will always find out the truth in the end

• Hoffer

I agree with everyone else in the world that having to pay for this on 360 is stupid. Even if they say that they need to pay for bandwidth or something, why $7?? Wouldn’t $1 or $2 cover that? The download was only 82 MB. I’m pretty sure 5 cents would cover that cost.

MS loves to over charge for everything. Pay for playing online. Pay CRAZY amounts for WiFi. Pay CRAZY amounts for hard drives. Not to mention you need to buy new 360s because the older ones are such crap.

Now that I’m done complaining. I bought the DLC and liked it. :-) It is a good versus map because it is shorter. Won’t take 2+ hours to finish one game.

• Lynch182

the only way this is going to be free is if not one person buys it. i find the whole buying clothes for an avatar stupid and the games on demand, but if people keep buying it then why should they change. just go over to the playstation, thats when things will change.

• oue
the only way this is going to be free is if not one person buys it. i find the whole buying clothes for an avatar stupid and the games on demand, but if people keep buying it then why should they change. just go over to the playstation, thats when things will change.
We can only hope that will happen. This has to end. It is getting out of control. They push and push it higher just to see if anyone will buy it. I have no idea how these people get these points, just to buy something over price. I know it’s not their hard earned money.

• MeS FEAR

i dont know if microsoft knows what they are doing to their comunity. Its the comunity whos giving you money. So the Consumer should be always happy but to many are not happy. Its not just this DLC here. Its more than that. You always charge money for everything but whats with the consumer??? Isnt the Consumer a King?? Microsoft should stop charging money for everything! Otherwise they will lose a lot of consumers. You cant say that u dont mind microsoft…cuz without us you are nothing!! If Microsoft wont change anything then i wont buy DLC like that anymore…cuz this should be free

• oue

Need to add it’s like “Hasbro Family Game Night” Wii $36.99 vs Xbox $70.00. I’m sure in the background MS is just laughing at us “stupid kids” For your avatar, without changing it can cost you: $15+ ($4) Halo RC Warthog ($5) Lightsaber ($4) Locust Drone Armor ($2)COG Helmet. There is no way someone that paid full cost on points would buy all that. They are getting the points some other way and the killing the rest of us.

• wolfzero01

I don’t see why anyone would play Left for Dead on the Xbox, when playing on the PC would seem like the way to go with the mods available & the fact the when Valve releases stuff like this that is suppposed to be free it is free. its really too bad that for every 10 people that don’t buy these overpriced things, there always will be one who does justifying to MS that its okay to gouge your customers.

• theuglyteradon

I bought Left 4 Dead on Steam this week for 14.99 and threw my 360 copy in a stack of games that I’ll be trading in. There is absolutely no reason that this should cost money and if anything should not cost this much.

There is no system to how these prices are made, and it’s becoming pathetic.

• SalarymanDaishi

@oue: I don’t think you can dual wield a lightsaber and an RC Warthog with your avatar :) Besides, don’t underestimate the buying public – stuff like this happens because it works. Major Nelson’s blog commentary is always full of whining but at the same time, all press releases say that marketplace revenues are up, thus the strategy obviously works. It might backfire in the long run, sure, but for now it works wonders.

• Rick Dias PK

Microsoft, I know you guys need to recoup your costs, but… really? This sounded okay to you? It’s free on Steam. Okay, so you’re offering the content on your servers and need to pay for bandwidth. That’s why we pay our fifty bucks a year. We’re supposed to be valued members of a premium service, but right now Valve’s treating us better at no additional cost. Continue to trample on our goodwill with money-grubbing nonsense to make up for your mistake with RROD design flaws, and I’ll start looking for another system; clearly my going out and buying Wii Points whenever I feel insulted by Microsoft isn’t doing enough to reverse the course, so perhaps I need a PS3 or PSP or DSi in my life soon. Hmm.

• tokerTM

No matter what anyone sais here, they wil still rip us off completely and argue in favour of charging whatever they like for anything. You notice there has not been one responce to tany of these comments?? Why u ask? Cause they know they have pissed so many people off with rippin us off and simply do not care about the community like they claim they do.

Grow the f up — you lot make enough money out of a lot of us anyway without making us pay for free stuff.

Bunch of rip off merchants, can’t state that enough …. And no doubt not one higher person (Nelson, E, Anyone like that) will ever answer or comment on any of our comments, they will just laugh it off and rub their hands YET AGAIN.

• FirePB

WoW its out :) but can’t believe its 560 Points, as I’ve only got 550 and can’t afford anymore atm :(

• Monoxide Child

Reasons like this are why I don’t buy DLC for Games.

This should be free but Microsoft just wants more money. Because of this I’ll be buying L4D2 on the PC.

• Makavelo

i just want to know where do my $50 bucks go? charging that much for a P2P service its a ripoff, games should at least have dedicated servers.

• Anonymous

Free on PC, thank god for Valve. L4D is also $14.99 on Steam.

• My Big Boss

I still have this as completed, when i look at my completed games, that’s nice because i don’t want this.. =P

• Exu

I don’t have L4D yet (it hasn’t got cheap enough) but when I do own it I won’t be handing over a point to you dirty robbing bastards.
And while we’re on the subject of DLC that MS want money for, please explain why you still want 800pts for the Mirror’s Edge time trials when they’ve been free on PSN for some time.

• Exu

Actually you know what? I’m not done.
Explain the charge, Microsoft. Why should anybody here have to pay to play this content on your platform? With the LIVE subscription WE’VE ALREADY PAID YOU. It’s not like anyone strictly offline would have been after this.

• Arent Argento

What about the people who paid the initial price off 800 MS points? Will they get a refund?

• DNAgent

Why are people complaining that this costs MS Points? Yeah, it’s free on PC and not on the 360 but why does this bother you? You know what else is free on PC? Playing online (obviously not talking about paying for the internet). You pay for XBL Gold yearly just to be able to play online. Not only that but Twitter & Facebook are coming to the 360 and it’s only available for XBL Gold members so you are essentially paying to use those free services as well. You shouldn’t complain about it, I mean you’re used to being ripped off by now and what I said was just a few examples.

• waitfortomorrow

I understand people are upset, but this isn’t the place to voice your dissatisfaction with Microsoft/Live. I agree it’s pretty lame it’s free on PC and costs us money, but let’s do something about it instead of flaming Microsoft in MN’s comments. So many of you are going to pay for more “DLC” that’s repackaged under the name L4D2 anyways :P .

• Imallvol

Wow, I am really proud of all you guys finally standing up. Don’t take this from MS anymore. I love my 360, but I have a PS3 too so I can often see how MS is taking advantage of their customers compared to Sony. However, this will only help to bring their attention to the matter. If you really want to be heard, STOP BUYING IT. I don’t EVER buy downloadable content (except for Rock Band songs :)

• MartyPG13

I’m not sure Sony is much better tbh, have you seen the price of the PSPgouge DLC? Sorry, PSPgo.

This is exactly where to make your voice heard – this and anywhere else it’ll get noticed – I don’t believe the BS that it’s to do with “bandwidth costs” I’m sure (unless a chimp designed the system) that the download can point to anywhere it likes, including Valve’s own servers. If it is a bandwidth thing, then everyone should start downloading the big Microsoft published game demos on market place on a daily or hourly basis ;)

No, this is about exploiting the popularity of a well selling title – unfortunately there are enough people out there that either don’t care or don’t know that Valve wanted to give this to the supporting fans for free and so will buy this content regardless; I’m not going to be one of them.

• tokerTM

Still not one single word from anyone in m$/MN/E about the charging for this … typical.

Why won’t anyone respond ????? Cause you all know we are right to say you should NOT of charged for this FREE DLC.

• Lynch182

@DNAgent facebook and twitter are on the playstation and always have been, they also have the bbc iplayer (free of charge) which me and my partner (especially her) find very useful. and we all know that if the bbc iplayer was on the xbox we would have to pay for it. they are robbing b*st*rds, and another annoying thing with these forums are the people who say they are on their 5th or 6th xbox after the RRoD. why the hell are you still giving this company your hard earned coinage??

• Thiago123

Well, I know its the principle of it, but $7 is still worth it for L4D. Game is too good. $7 is a lot cheaper than the money it would take to get a gaming rig good enough to play it on PC…
Also, bummed I didn’t get in on GWF last week :( . Oh Hayley Williams…you are Godzilla and I am Tokyo.

• oO MG81 Oo

It’s a shame they’re trying to charge people for this content which is supposed to be free. L4D is an excellent game and I’d love to play these new maps, but, I won’t now because of this BS. Just another reason why I’m slowly migrating over to PC for my gaming fix these days. The PS3 is also looking more and more appealing with it’s free online MP access and lower price point. Xbox Live gold is no longer worth the subscription fee and gamerscore/avatars are not enough to hold my interest.

• Just2Lazzzy

This is the 1st extra content I’ve bought for a game. To be honest 560 Microsoft points. Is spot on for what it gives you. 11 more achievements are added. (these achievements are kinda easy to obtain) This was meant to improve versus mode, witch it has from a great deal. There are two chapters included in the new campaign. The zombie spawning has improved. So you won’t have to be looking behind yourself every 13 seconds. Also, the weapons have been placed around the map. Instead of just 1 place.

• Vasilii Zaytsev

Fuck you, Microsoft, for making Valve let you charge for this.

• EtTuBruteshot

Major should definitely weigh in on this and provide everyone with a clear and reasonable explanation as to why Microsoft forced Valve to charge for DLC. He probably won’t, but that’s to be expected since there can be no plausible explanation except that it is shameless greed!

Just like Halo 3 ODST. Bungie said for months on end that it wasn’t a full game and would be priced accordingly, but low and behold, Microsoft decides that even though it isn’t a full game in its own right, they should charge whatever the market will bear. Since there are so many Halo 3 fans out there (in top 2 or 3 of XBOX Live games list since it came out), I guess Microsoft said ‘Hey, let’s make Bungie charge the price for a regular full game and the fans will purchase it anyway. Screw a little bad press and a few negative comments on the Internet… we want the $$$’

So, Major, enjoy your paycheck from this greedy little company. Keep charging everyone unfair prices… Microsoft’s day will come… eventually.

• xZepher

$50 a year just isnt enough for M$’s greedy ass. Charging for something that is free on PC.

• MadMonkeyKiller

L4D Crash course price error

Lots of people will be/have done/ going to buy it! but for some who bought it early it cost 800MSP, but it now cost’s 560msp. what im talking about is i got “tipped off”. so i want to know how to resolve what i paid. And with achievements not working as well i feel put of from buying DLC again.

• EtTuBruteshot

I don’t have a problem with buying DLC… but when it’s free on other platforms, and the publisher wants to give it away as part of their business strategy, then they should have the right to give it away.

I quit playing L4D some time ago as it got too boring. Valve didn’t release the free DLC in a timely manner and most of the people I played with on a regular basis quit playing it because it had gotten stale.

I’m definitely not going to pay for something that many people say is too short and is buggy at best. Shame on Microsoft’s greedy little butts… Oh, and I’m not buying L4D2 either… because when I bought L4D1, I was under the impression that more content (free) would follow soon. They welched on that promise and then Microsoft puts their hands in Valve’s pockets when they finally had some DLC to deliver.

• L0ng5h0t

There is an unholy alliance at work behind the decision to charge for this content. First there’s Microsoft’s policy that A) Free content can’t have achievements and B) The Publisher, not the developer, sets the price for the dlc. So let’s see who is the publisher of L4D and L4D: CC… Oh, lookie, it’s our favorite money-grubbing publisher EA. Creators of the infamous unlock4cash schemes of last year. Valve is not completely innocent here, since they are listed as co-publishers, but that may be only that they publish the pc version on Steam and EA published the Xbox version. Still it seems that they should’ve had enough pull in the industry to keep the price down.

• yolarrydabomb

meh I going to quit buying points

This is stupid

• DavidGX

I’m getting ever closer to trading my 360 and all it’s games for a ps3. I’m growing REALLY tired of all this greed and bullshit.

• StabaCadaver

I said it before and I’ll say it again. WAH! If you don’t agree with it, don’t buy it. Your comments won’t change anything, but your actions will depending on what you decide to do.

• Monoxide Child

Horse Armor anyone?

• DavidGX

@StabaCadaver

If you’re going to whine about peoples comments you probably should save yourself the embarrassment and just f- off.

• My Big Boss

All people that keep complaining about the price should f**k of since everything is charge for how would you then run a business by giving everything out for free f**k you..

• My Big Boss

@DavidGX

You can f**k off..
He is trying to stop people like you from spamming the board with you bitching.
a**hole..

• kristof666

Why do i have to pay? I ve supported the xbox when I buy L4D on 360 and this is how MS reward me?
The addon is free on pc!!!!it should be free on 360 especially when I already pay XBL every year for a supposly premium service…

RRoD, now this shit…disapointing microsoft…

• Dannyb0yUK

Major Nelson will never respond to this stuff. He’s just the face of sales for Microsoft, cleverly disguised as everyone’s good friend. He’s nothing more than a glorified PR man. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a pleasant bloke but Microsoft wont allow him to answer any of these questions. They know that nothing can ever stop them from all this and that the protests against these practices will never amount to anything more than some bitching and complaining online. We get conned time and time again, and MS will only ever respond with BS PR statements that somehow end up shining a good light on them. They wont ever acknowledge the fact that they con us royally be it through DLC such as this, through the far too expensive Live fees or through the price of add on hardware (I’ve no objection to it being additional, but not at the prices they charge, like with the Network adapter. That should be no more than £19.99 for what it is.)- they know that there’s nothing the consumer can ever do about it, so they’ll just ignore it.

• Dannyb0yUK

@My Big Boss- you should take your own advice about keeping your mouth closed. People already pay far too much just for Live access. The fact that PC owners get all this stuff without paying anything more than their internet bill is what annoys them. There’s no justification for it that will sit well with consumers. If you don’t like it, then don’t comment- but who the hell do you think you are telling other people to shut up? You’re a nobody, just another little boy on the internet.
