Xbox 360 System Update – Wireless Adapter WPA2 support

The team has released a system update for the Xbox 360 over Xbox LIVE.

Sometime over the next few hours when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you’ll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update. If you are signed into LIVE already, you may be signed out and asked to accept the update and you’ll be back online in a few moments.

This update does not include the Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and Zune features. Those will be coming to Xbox LIVE later next month. This update adds WPA2 support for the Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter.

  • thefalcon2k

So, will this update affect those of us with Facebook, Twitter, & Last.fm?

  • hydroxyde

Wow. The 360 wireless adapter didn’t know about WPA2 until now?
    That’s terrible.

  • Krammeh

That’s what I was then going to ask, TheFalcon2k

  • XenoLair

Bah, id rather have a small wireless access point next to my 360 than the wireless network adapter. Cheaper, better, WPA2 support already – well everything about networking supported already(if the WAP is good)

  • Xbox Sonic

awesome. WPA2 is a must support.

  • DEVIL ROOM

downloading now .. thanks major :)

  • Naquadah

holy crap after alllllllllll this time? damn thats bad, wpa2 has been on the go for ages!

  • WPAK

What happens if you are in th Xbox Live preview program? Do you receive the update?

  • AL0IS

    Thanks for the explanation Major

  • AnB360

Are the 360 wireless adapter not WPA2-able until now? So expensive and not updated…
    Bah…
There’s something wrong in the last time in MS policity..
1 example? The brutal legend dlc: for us 400 mp, for ps3 free for 2 weeks.
    And so on..

  • Mikro

Looks like xbl previewers don’t get this update I’ve not seen it I’ve been on for a bit

  • Crazy Skater72

I signed in this morning and I got the Preview Progam update than after I installed it I got the Wireless update thing he is talking about here and My Preview Program Went away what the crap

  • THEICEMANCOMETH

My guess this is actually support for WPA2 in the console, to allow it to “talk” WPA2 to the adapter. It makes far more sense for them to not have had WPA2 support in a console that’s been out for almost four years now than to not have it in the adapters themselves, especially with the new Wireless-N adapter coming.

  • RangerPrimeX

PS3 got the Joker DLC exclusive. 360 got GTA4 DLC as well as Fallout 3 DLC first. It is all in the deals,
360 losing the Netflix streaming exclusive on consoles with PS3 getting it next month; that will be huge, That was a powerful counterpoint to no blu-ray support on the 360. It would be nice if 360 support external blu-ray drives even if they did not make it themselves.

  • Ganon255

Maybe you guys can update the price on the adapter next?

  • excommodog

Will this update remove the preview, yes or no?

  • SwizzlesMum

My update froze my xbox then failed. wtf? do these updates get tested or what? firstly i dont need the update. secondly i dont need my 360 being bricked by shoddy workmanship.

  • WPAK

I asked the question regarding to the preview in the preview forums and te response was that nothing will happen to people who are in the Preview Program. It’s only related to the wireless Adapter

  • excommodog

    thanks wpak

  • Huch

    @Ganon255… Don’t hold your breath.

  • IconicSoulJA

LMFAO!! The expensive as hell adapter didn’t have WPA2 support. Ripoffs. LOL. Thanks for the late support update. I mean my Treo 800w supports WPA2 and that’s a year old.

  • Tirkon

Maybe mandatory wasn’t necessary. Then again, maybe more is involved that has been stated.

  • AP0LL0G0D

I MAC filter so I don’t give a crap about this update.

  • IconicSoulJA

They are bringing the Wireless-N adapter support through this update IMHO!

  • WormholeXtreme

This is good. My MS adaapter sthat only cost me $40 will have WPA2 support. They are not expensive if you look for a deal. Just lik ethe points are cheaper and the XBL service is too if you get them on sale.

  • Podycust

WPA2 support is already included in the preview! so this update isnt needed!

  • Neo X5

Nice, it’s about time…I guess their new wireless N adapter lit a fire under them.

  • ShaggyB

my question is… why now and not with the update next month?

  • Shuvo0o

Hey, last year I changed my internet plan with a new modem (Netgear DG834GUv5) and my xbox found the wireless modem but cant connect it. I even called Xbox and Netgear center and no one solve the problem. Now I just got this update on Xbox, and I tried to connect Xbox to the modem again and it still has the same problem! I just dont know what to do.

Can someone please tell me whether Netgear DG834GUv5 is compatibility with Xbox Live or not? Thanks in advance.

  • stststststq

“1 example? The brutal legend dlc: for us 400 mp, for ps3 free for 2 weeks.

    And so on..”

1 exclusive 2 week deal means nothing. What about the rest of the year? You’re lucky to get 2 or 3 downloadable games a month on PSN and hardly any of them have demos. Content is often more expensive too. Most of the 800 MS Point stuff (£6.80) is £7.99 on PSN and it’s always on Live first. This site is full of people moaning, but if the grass was greener you’d have switched to a PS3. As a long time owner of both consoles, the grass is certainly NOT greener.

  • Lites

@RangerPrime – Actually Netflix is still better on the 360. If you didn’t read up on it let me be the first to inform you that to use netflix on your PS3 you need to insert a disc into your PS3 unlike the 360. Just click on the app and go. the PSN network can’t fully support netflix apparently hence the disc that is required.

  • MaliciousX

Great… I just updated it and I loaded up Forza 3 and now my screen in screwy. The images are there and everything but I’m getting greens and blues dots all over the place. Time to send and email to support.

  • KP ScuzzyBunny

Has anyone found out if Netlfix on the PS3 is going to carry some sort of fee (outside of the minimum $7.99 Netflix)…on XBL you have to be Gold to use it, so that might, MIGHT, be something of an advantage. Like some others have said, I definitely prefer my 360 over my PS3, and even now, the difference in libraries and “exclusive” games is a no-brainer. Once the God of War and Final Fantasy stuff hits it might change a little, but right now I hardly touch the PS3.

  • stststststq

The minimum package required to use Netflix on the PS3 is slightly more expensive at $8.99 and of course you have to put a disc in every time you want to use it, but other than that there is no extra fee. Live Gold was worth paying for before it had Netflix streaming and that was just a cool addition for folks in the US, so now that another console has got it (albeit, not implemented as smoothly, but that sums up PSN really) it doesn’t really remove value from a Live subscription unless you own both consoles and you were literally only paying for Live Gold so that you could use Netflix, but I doubt that there are many people in that situation. It won’t stop the serial moaners on this blog though! lol.

  • Neo X5

The netflix feature on the PS3 will initially use a disc. Whether that means they will have an app that is downloaded later down the road or the disc is an install remains to be seen (I saw one article that said it will not need the disc late next year). The disc is free to Netflix subscribers. In the end they are slowly becoming competitive.
I don’t remember seeing that it will cost more to use netflix on the PS3, as long as you have an account that streams then you will be set, you will pay slightly higher fees to enable blu ray discs to be sent to you…that I know…but that is true for every single netflix subscriber not just the PS3 owners.

  • IxS1KxW1Tx1TxI

Wow took a hella long time to provide this but no it’s ok my wired network is much better :)

  • JJQuantum

It’s nice that WPA2 has been added, but they have also added the disabling of unathorized memory units feature that MajorNelson mentioned would happen eventually.

I’ll miss having a 2 Gig card to move things between my hard drives of my 3 machines and the two drives I have for my main machine (use media extender on the other two). Larger capacity memory cards and/or hard drives are needed now. I know a 250 Gig is coming soon, but not soon enough. A 500 Gig would be better.

I guess if folks are using these cards to cheat then this is a good move. Why someone would want to cheat in a game which is suppose to be enjoyment and entertainment is very weird to me.

  • Oatmeal25

It could be worse. You could be stuck with Nintendo’s Apollo era technology.

Stick with a wired connection and only go wireless if it is your last option.

  • bones37101

I’m so glad Major Nelson has time to update us on a syatem update this morning but has no word yet on if people who resubmitted their console ID’s will get the preview…..I mean my console was verified Monday and here it is Wednesday and I still have no update along with alot of XBL users that did sign up and resubmitted….Thanks Major…..You da Man

  • stststststq

bones37101 – I got an email to confirm I was accepted for the preview program, but the update wasn’t rolled out to my console until nearly 4 days later. They’re obviously doing it in waves, so I wouldn’t worry about not getting it straight away as long as you entered in all of your console’s details correctly.

  • bones37101

I resubmitted my console due to my previous one freezing up on me…..I called Support and gave them all my new info for my system…..My console was verified on Monday and I got the email Friday night….and nothing….I’ll wait though, no biggie

  • N0RDS

My good it took time. I got so many problem with that until I realize (a few years ago) that my 360 was not able to connect on a WPA2 and have to set it to WPA or WEP. But now its done and thats the first thing ive done this morning set my router to WPA2

  • SpaceNinjaDino

    Better late than never.

  • A Place for Us

You totally need to update the price too!

  • Sloe Jinn Fizz

I realize this comment is slightly off-topic, but I couldn’t find any other active post about the latest update. I’m just a casual gamer and wasn’t even aware of this site until this morning. How I got here is the reason I am writing.

I recently purchased a 2GB Max memory unit which stopped working after today’s update. Now, my complaint isn’t so much that Microsoft locked out unauthorized storage devices, but that no advance warning was given anywhere other than here. It’s ridiculous to assume all Xbox gamers frequent this site. There could have been an announcement on the dashboard or a message sent out to all Live accounts. Ideally, a warning message should have popped up prior to accepting the mandatory update. At least then I would have had an opportunity to move my saved games back to the main drive.

As it stands I’ve now lost several hundred hours of gameplay which, ironically, is the sole reason I purchased the Max memory unit in the first place. Some games only allow a single save which is constantly overwritten. A couple weeks ago I lost about sixty hours of gameplay in Fable 2 because of a corrupt save file. I initially purchased the official Xbox portable memory unit, but it only allowed saves to be moved rather than copied and that doesn’t help in this situation. After further research I purchased the Max unit from Best Buy, unaware that it was an “unauthorized” storage device.

Frankly, I’m very disappointed with Microsoft’s handling of this situation and seriously considering switching to another platform. I can accept a certain amount of aggravation from software bugs and hardware problems (I’ve already had to send my console in for a video card failure) but this was deliberate.

  • GS HaXoR

    @ Sloe Jinn Fizz

Connect your Max Memory microSD card to PC.
    Copy saves+folders to PC.
Open up you XBOX 360 Hard Drive.
Connect the drive to your PC.
Use a program called ‘Xplorer360′ to view folders on your Hard Drive.
Copy all save folders to the relevant directory.

    Sorted :)

  • GS HaXoR

    @ Sloe Jinn Fizz

    Just spotted this: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/datel-working-on-remedy-for-its-unauthorized-xbox-360-memory-u/#comments

Looks like us Max Memory owners still have glimmer of hope :D

    Take that Microsoft!

PS: I just made myself a 250GB HDD for half the price of the official 120GB, :D :D :D
    Absolute Epicness!

  • Sloe Jinn Fizz

Thank you, I appreciate the help. Was not looking forward to replaying those games.

  • BkLiveWire

I never got the update yet.

  • schwa242

I’m having similar problems as SwizzlesMum. After the update, my Xbox locks up after about ten minutes use. I’ve tried two games (Fable II and Burnout: Paradise), as well as just navigating around on the dashboard. Each time, it freezes within ten minutes or so and I have to reboot. Of course, it could be having another problem entirely and it’s coincidence that it began after the update.

  • Nintendo Tim

Does this happen to have support for the wireless-N adapter that’s supposed to be coming out next month?

  • Krestniy

  • DeeJayEye45

I still haven’t gotten this update, and it’s been hours…

  • EvilTrovis

Do you not get the update if you have the preview program update?

I just played for about an hour AND did a network test (normally prompts updates if I don’t get them at startup) and nothing happened.

  • Surly x Duff

I have two consoles–my main, which is in the preview, and a 2nd that is primarily used for Netflix that is NOT in the preview. The non-preview system recieved the WPA2/memory card killer update. So for those wondering, I believe the preview includes the WPA2 already.

As for the disabling of memory cards, I agree–more notification for such a move was needed. Just posting the news on Major’s blog is not enough. Especially when messing with users who use the memory cards instead of a hard drive. The only option they had prior to the update is to purchase another card or HDD, at an exorbitant price. That’s IF they checked the blogs regularly. Other users are just flat out hosed, though they purchased the cards legally, and likely did nothing wrong to begin with. Garbage move MS.

  • HUM CHEE

Anyone experiencing slower startup times after downloading this update? It seems like my box just magically slowed down.

  • EveofLight

Netflix is coming to PS3? Awesome! Another reason why I’m getting a PS3 next yr. I don’t have to pay to stream movies on my console when my PC is off. It makes me laugh when MS says you get to use Facebook, Twitter, and LastFM FREE on the XBox360 but yet you have to pay for gold to use it ಠ_ಠ
    |
I was brokenhearted when my system updated and I thought it was the preview. Nice to know they updated this wireless thing.

  • Misaki Ki

@EveofLight – Yeah, it’s more of a slap when they things they rolled out were fairly limited as well. Such as no photo uploading in Facebook. Oh well.

I understand the things we have tend to be of higher quality, but the price is getting harder to justify as the years go on.

  • tMongoose

@ HUM CHEE, try clearing the cache

  • CRush xSDGx

i think its about time the network adapter drops in price now. its only logical

  • GS HaXoR

    @ CRush xSDGx

    Logical to a normal person.

Microsoft believes that their products do not depreciate in value over time.

  • Huch

@GS HaXoR – NICE! I am going to spread this info around.

  • WraithTDK

Wonderful. So we didn’t get any new features with that update but hey, I see my memory card no longer works. Didn’t you say that was going to happen in November? Thanks loads for screwing over your paying customers. It’s bad enough that even though I pay a monthly fee for a Gold membership, my dashboard is littered with advertisements that aren’t even for gaming products (but hey, who doesn’t want a McDonalds Double Cheeseburger dashboard theme, right?), but now I can’t use the memory card that I bought for perfectly legit reasons. For crying out loud, I’d BUY a 4GB memory card from Microsoft if they MADE one, but they DON’T, so why shouldn’t I be able to buy one from someone else untill Microsoft releases one?

  • xTye

My question is, why was it there when the adapter released, and only just now given to us?

  • Tyrant Dunn

@xbox sonic where did you get those lady gaga sunglasses? theyre awesome

  • Dj Ron360

I have not yet received the WPA2 update, is this because I have the preview update?

  • EXL Unit

I find the fact that my Memory Card that I purchased to use with good intent (nothing more than to put my profile and DLC on, so that I can play at my friends house) no longer works. You had said that they would not work once the twitter/facebook/whatever update was applied. Well your little update for this adapter has disabled it. I am very upset over MS disabling these anyway. Ya know, not all people are crooks. I wanted to use the memory unit for nothing more than stated above. And i read the reasoning was because of hackers. Well, people are going to hack your system regardless of what you do. There will always be people finding ways. Way to punish you faithful customers for trying to conserve money in harder times. I know of three people and myself that will not be renewing our Live accounts next year. And two of them have already went and purchased a PS3 and intend to use it exclusively once their Live subscription is expired. It’s sad that MS won’t let their customers have a choice in what they wish to use on the console that they OWN.

As for these updates. I feel certain that yesterdays update was for the memory cards not for said adapter. And the twitter crap. Meh. I would rather have my Memory Unit and some cool updates.

  • Zacabeb

The WPA2 functionality is already in the preview. I tested it yesterday, and am still trying to get over the shock that it actually worked.
Regarding the memory card killer part, I think it would be hilarious if the workaround is simple. I think a lot of people owning “unauthorized storage devices” are going to learn a lot about the other means of exploration that will allow them access to their data again.
    But personally, I’ve had it.
The Windows 7 launch party ads, the memory card blockout, asking preview program members to beta test specific movies on Zune on specific days but at their own expense… I’m sorry, but I can’t take this anymore. I’ve decided not to extend my gold membership any further once it expires. You can only date a lunatic for so long before you realize it’s better for both of you to just break up.
By the way, why wasn’t there a document prop available with Halloween avatar stuff?

  • TheBossMan117

I like every other datel card user is disappointed by what MS did…but ok, I dont mind that they “locked out” my card…but what DOES get me irritated is that when I was updated I expecting that my card couldnt be recognized or seen anymore…but instead after updating my xbox is stuck on a screen indicating that “No Memory Unit is detected” and when i try to continue it says “update failed” im like wtf? I cant even access my xbox to play offline. I don’t care that I cant use my card, I freggin care that I cant get to my xbox. Anyone else run into this problem?

  • Onza

    That’s why I like wires…

  • Anonymous

I LOL at AP0LL0G0D on page 1. He doesn’t need security because he has a MAC filter. It’s just an ACL for your access point! People can use tools to monitor your UNENCRYPTED connection and potentially steal information!

  • GS HaXoR

    Just do what i did,
MS block’s your Max Memory, make yourself a 250GB HDD to make up for it.
(i would have done it anyway, but this can be my excuse :P )
    -
This way, Microsoft have just lost £xx.xx from me.
xx.xx would obviously be a high number based on what they’re charging for official peripherals.
    -
If i wanted to hack i game, i can still connect my Hard Drive to my PC; i don’t need a Max Memory to do that :|
    -
Like i’ve said all along, this blocking of ‘unauthorized’ memory units is all about money/charging customers large markups as that is their only option.

  • TheBossMan117

@ GS Haxor, so like what? You got the same result as I did and you just plugged in another type of memory unit and fixed it? thats all I really wanna know…cause like its killing me not being able to play on my xbox

  • FC360D

If this update is only for the wireless adapter why does everyone have to update? I would of thought only people that have and use the wireless adapter would have to update.

  • GS HaXoR

    @ TheBossMan117

    No.
There is no fix yet – the Max Memory does not work.

Datel are supposedly working on a fix – lets hope they can get our Max Memory unit’s working again :D

  • TheBossMan117

    @ GS Haxor
well I mean did you get the same issue I did? cause i cant get passed the “Memory Unit Not Detected” part and it just sends me to “Update Failed”. im asking if you had used one of THEIR *lame* memory cards and did it let you proceed to the xbox dashboard? ….*sniffles* I just wanna play mass effect :/

  • teajay74

After installing this update I also had problems with my console, like two other commenters said. It initially worked and it all was running okay, but then when I turned it one this morning it wouldn’t connect to my wireless network and after I tried to do re-set up the connect the system froze as I was entering my wireless key. I restarted the console and had a go of GTA4 Ballad of Gay Tony and the video would freeze for about 10 seconds whilst the sound still played and then go back to normal and then about 30 seconds later it would do the same. It wouldn’t quite crash, just freeze the video for about 10 seconds then go back to normal. I wonder if it is just a coincidence or if the update did something?

I reset the network settings to default and tried setting up the connection again, went through the troubleshooter which asked me to remove the wireless adapter and put in an ethernet cable and that worked and then I put the wireless adapter back in and now it runs okay. So maybe removing and reinserting the adapter and resetting my wireless to default fixed it up, as I’m not getting any freezes now.

I’ll post back if it starts playing up again.

  • EXL Unit

    @GS HaXoR

Some of us actually want to use the Max Memory for nothing more than DLC and profile storage. People hacking them is the reason that I can’t use mine. Even though I have no intention to hack anything. Thanks dude.

  • AnB360

Italian payer people thank also for Halo Waypoint.
    1 other point of fault.

  • GS HaXoR

    @ TheBossMan117

    I have not encoutered that.
My Max Memory simply does not show up in the memory section.
My HDD & official memory unit’s show up fine…
    I guess there must be some differences between official MU’s & Datel’s MU’s if it’s easily detectable/blockable.

    @ EXL Unit

    Hacking what?

The reason the Max Memory doesn’t work is because Microsoft blocked it as they don’t get any money from Datel.
They have not been blocked because of ‘hacking’ – what you can hack, i don’t know… probably nothing.
Maybe it’s a bit easier to copy small files to your 360, but that’s about it.
Anything over 50mb will take way too long to copy to the microSD card. That’s where the HDD comes in.

  • uRBAN jAMAican

finally! god, that took long. it should have been in since day one.

  • TheBossMan117

    @GS Haxor
*cry*….im hoping my theory of inserting one of their lame cards will correct my issue…im HOPING…but thanks anyway, i was looking into getting a 60 gig harddrive…thats all I really need to be honest, im not a big time content person

  • Coffeenator

@TheBossMan117 @EXL Unit I was this far ::holds fingers about a CM apart:: from buying one of the Datel units in Best Buy a few weeks ago. You can’t find the Official 512MB units in retail anymore and for the same price you could get the 2GB unit from Best Buy.

I was there to pickup a power cord ($12?!?!!!) because I was moving my son back into the dorms and he had misplaced one of his and I was pissed at the price and did not want to give them any more money than I had to at the time.

Why is it I can buy power cables for $2 online and HDMI cables for $8, but I go into a retail store and they think they can charge $12 & $35????

Gripeing about prices, the Official MU should really be priced like $10 US or $15 US for a pair to be reasonable priced. A larger capacity version would be nice also like a 2GB or $20 would be nice also. Neither the PS3 or Wii require the use of proprietary memory modules to store saves, profiles or DLC on.

  • Coffeenator

Why is the formatting of the comments so poor on this site.

  • TheBossMan117

    @ Coffeenator

its simple posting, ANYWAY…i went and got a 256 memory card plugged it in and it still didnt fix my problem…thank god I can at least take the card back and get some other game or something for it *sigh*…but my xbox is still stuck…im afraid that my xbox might be fraked…

  • EXL Unit

    @ Coffeenator

Luck You. I sent an email to MS before I purchased one. And the rely i got stated that any 360 product on the shelf for storage devices were okay to use on the 360. So I bought it (3 weeks ago) and now it doesn’t work. Needless to say. I’m jacked about it. MS Support cost me $40 for a hunk of junk that no longer works.
