Xbox 360 Games On Demand By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • BMW530XD

Major Nelson: Do you think its fair to have such crazy prices on old games?
$50 here in Norway. Can someone explain the logic in this?

  • Resident Cynic

Because there must be some people out there who buy them, and they make a killing on everyone that does.

  • Shonk jr

    Umm let me see

    gears 1 on dl £20

gears 1 new on disk £6.97

or gears 2 new on disk for £9.98

ms really need to get real with these prices

  • Blue Thunder28

    $40!? >_<

  • Ark Hunter

Sorry, but that’s an OLD game and you can get it for $5-10 easy, plus it’s digital…

  • Shonk jr

    oops £6.47 even

  • mnemo

Not available in Germany, of course, either!

  • Shonk jr

Maybe the post office should get into this scam

    39p for a letter
    £20 for an e-mail delivery

has to be a bargain doesnt it

  • theuglyteradon

So does this even include all the DLC?

  • Exu

The original Gears for £19.99? F*** off, you can get the Gears 2 GOTY for sub-£13 now.
@theuglyteradon – No, but the DLC for the first game is all free now anyway. Like old DLC should be.

  • moocow21

All the DLC is free now anyways.

And I don’t know if this is the right place to ask, but is there any chance Gears PC will be coming to the PC Games On Demand service any time soon? I’ve been looking to pick that game up for ages but I can’t find it in stores and I’d prefer a digital download. I would have thought that Halo 2 & Gears PC would have launched with the PC On Demand service. :(

  • mnemo

You can get Gears of War PC at or… just order it somewhere.

  • Arsenic13

Cant Microsoft learn to be a fair company? Really? You guys set to fail by trying to milk us of all our money. Is $50 a year for a traditionally free service not enough? Jesus.

  • Bender318

Ummm, why is it $40 in Canada but $20 in the US? That doesn’t make any sense when you exchange the money there’s only like a $2 difference. Seriously this Games on Demand is going very well from my point of view.

  • A Place for Us

First party game should be around £9.99 here. I can get it a lot cheaper used.

  • MustardMan z

Hmm…. 19.99$ USD for 39.99$ CAD, what kind of rip-off bank set prices/exchange rates for Live content?

From XE.COM as of today, 1 USD = 1.04243 CAD so 20.84$ CAD would be the fair price.

Isn’t this kind of practice called fraud or a racket? Anyone knows what legal means us customers have against ridicule pricing like that?

THIS is what I would call holiday extravaganza (lame joke about xmas live deals…)

  • a peeking duck

You can get Gears of War 2 GOTY edition (includes all DLC and other stuff) for $20 in stores here.
Major: this is a really, really bad joke. Just give it up, already. And yes, you’ll pass on our comments, whatever. I’m sure the money-hungry marketing team or whoever don’t give a damn.

  • BMF Irish ace

u must be nuts €29.99 here €4.99 in the shop lol

  • a peeking duck

P.S. In case that wasn’t clear enough: THIS IS A RIPOFF, MAJOR.

  • StammyFi

30 euros, lol. What a joke.

  • xZepher

Saw this at the store for $9.99 not even on sale. These prices are terrible. BY THE WAY All the Christmas countdown crap sucks. I was hoping to pick up Braid but you just had to be a money whore and give us some crap movie rental that no one cares about. Thanks MS Im so glad that you care about your customers enough to give them a crappy movie rental on days that other countries get great games. Thanks

  • A Place for Us

Hint: Check on average how much a game like this sells for used, match the average price and then at least make some money out this service from a lot more people. I hope the majority of players are buying their games new or used through the Internet and even in-store because the prices on Games on Demand are too high.

I would rather be making at least some extra money (even if it is not much) from a game that has already financially done well. People are going to buy this used if they need to, which means no money for Microsoft, Epic – just the retailer/seller.

Try and offer a fair price and you’ll be able to get more people, more money overall. It would be a win, win situation then.

  • Makavelo

i remember buying this game at gamestop 2 YEARS ago for 15 bucks and that was 2 freaking years ago now it should not cost more than $5

  • TheJuggla17

Nice, I’ve been waiting for a digital copy to be released. I’m really hoping for the following…

    Halo 2
    Halo 3
    Halo Wars
    Halo 3: ODST
    The Orange Box
    Quake 4

When are we going to see same day retail releases?

  • AZRoboto

Well, the 2 Disc edition is $18.48 at Amazon. The On Demand version shouldn’t be more than $15, so $20 is whatever, that’s your lowest Platinum Hits price.

But how about we get a good, affordable hard drive here? I still have a launch 20GB. Apparently the 120GB Hard Drive can’t be found anywhere anymore, and the 60GB isn’t justifiable at all ($90 for 60GB, 2 months Live, and a headset, really?). Just release the 250GB HDD with a full year of Live and a headset for $150 and I’ll be happy.

  • DavidGX

I checked gamestops website. They list the 2 disc version of Gears of War for $19.99

And you want to sell me the DIGITAL copy for $19.99???

You guys have failed at digital distribution. Just stop embarrassing yourself already.

  • Luenkun

Week after week it’s the same song and yet they are keeping these prices.
At least you should have special price for the Gold members.

  • aseddon130

lol Gears 1 for £20 … u can get Gears 2 GOTY Edition for nearly half that!

  • Anonymous

    @ aseddon130

You probably can, but you know how much people prefer Gear 1 over 2.

  • Gonzo345

One of the best games but BAD final cost

  • MyJewlzHurt

!@#$ Microsloth…………are you ever gonna learn!!!

  • BMW530XD

What about a facebook group concerning these crazy prices and region bullcrap.

Something happened in Australia concerning the prices but I am not sure if this was a Micrsoft error or if it was a public demand to lower it.

New users to xboxlive and the console may buy it ’cause they dont know better, but when they find out they were scammed by microsoft………..

  • CaptainCaterpie

    £20, a rip-off!

I could walk into my town centre and pick GoW 1 up for less than £8 i bet.

When they start releasing 3 year old games for £7.99, it might start to be worth it.

  • wolfzero01

why is this the same price as Gears 2? its really too bad nobody is listening to the complaints about the high prices, but what really sucks is that there are people who will gladly keep buying stuff at these prices thus making sure that MS never will lower the prices & keep having crappy deals of the week

  • Computerdude103

You people are really stupid. Do you know how much trouble Microsoft would get in if they priced games below retailers? Retailers already have a tiny profit margin on games, and if the publisher of the game forced them to reduce their profit margin to less, they’d probably sue Microsoft for having another monopoly. The games on demand was never designed to compete with retailers, it was designed for people who are rich and lazy (or the 50% of Xbox 360 owners with faulty DVD drives). Either way, you people are totally stupid to sit here and complain about prices, there is no way that Microsoft will EVER sell games on demand below retail. I hate Microsoft as much as everyone else, but there are some things (like getting sued) that they are good at, and good at avoiding.

  • xZepher

I feel embarrassed to own an Xbox. MS completely failed with the digital distribution. These are the worst prices ever. Complete ****.

  • Major Moyo

    @Computerdude103…you are damn right!

  • A Place for Us

Computerdude103: Cheaper is better. The prices are not ANYWHERE near the prices at retail. Not saying they need to be cheaper than those at retail but they should be cheaper than what they are at the moment. At the end of the day, publishers would rather use digital distribution over people buying games used (only a retailer would get the money). That way publishers get more money and well, retailers would have to come up with a new plan.

Also, don’t just troll out a figure of 50% of DVD drives faulty here because if I somehow had this occur to me, I would not simply resort to the rip-off Games on Demand service due to a hardware failure. There’s such thing as a service centre – send it there.

  • Atleticoinomano

    Price is absolutely ridiculous. 30€

    A bad joke.

Microsoft should take a look at Steam to see how it’s done.

  • HFC

Can only speak about Australia and to be fair, it’s priced at $29.99 AUD’s which is exactly what I paid for a brand new boxed copy 2 weeks ago for a friends Christmas pressie. albeit he gets the box, disc etc etc.

On this indication, it would seem that at least the pricing is getting better. I mean Rockstar table tennis was 59 or 69 bucks here FFS.

So it’s getting better. Albeit slowly.

Hey Major – on another note. Can you tell me what Microsoft Australia actually does? Very little on face value.

  • DavidGX

No I think you are the one who’s stupid. Do you not understand the concept of digital = CHEAPER than retail? I’m not going to explain it to you. Google is your friend.

    Also, see: Steam.

  • CaptainCaterpie

Not really asking for cheaper than retail, because then we know MS would get sued for a monopoly.

We’re asking for them to be cheaper! GOW1 as it is here is nearly 3 times the price it is in shops! If MS want to make money off the section of its audience which are hardcore, loyal Xbox gamers with a certain budget, which most people on this site are, then they need to reduce prices.

@BMW530XD Australia Had Mass Effect on the GOD service for $119 after we complained we got it lowered to $69 which is still $50 to much.

The GOD service needs to be overhauled so it matches the Microsoft Point systems.

If you buy a XBLA game in Australia it is for example 800mp in Australia and its 800mp in every other country.

Whereas if you buy a GOD game in America it is roughly $20US but it is between $30 – $119 in other country. So some conformity is needed. personally I think all games should be $25 which is about 1500mp.

@major nelson, could you please investigate why the discrepancy in pricing. it is getting WAY out of hand. Also please tell us what Microsoft Australia does, or even better does anyone work there?

  • EveofLight

Wow I got the collectors edition for $10.00 a long while back…wow just wow! I would think digital games would cost less but I guess not :\

  • Xlrking

These prices are so fucking hilarious i swear.
Yet i log onto my computer and what do i see? Steam having a sale for a huge catalogue of games for under 10 dollars.

  • Shonk jr

Imagine what its like outside the usa then

its $33 us in the uk
and thats with the pound at the worst exchange rate ever

it the pound was at its normal rate it would be around $38 us

  • L0ngb0y

I doubt they would bring out Halo 3 as a digital copy as they’re now working on Halo: Reach and you cannot even install Halo 3 to your HDD because of they way it uses the HDD to cache the maps for quicker loading times.

Gears of War was a cool game campaign wise. I really never enjoyed the multiplayer, I don’t really enjoy 3rd person multiplayer games as much as the first person ones.

  • AK ReubenDR

Lol That’s just a joke, especially the Canadian price when compared to the U.S
