Game Add-on, Marketplace By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • GamingTailor

Does this DLC add more achievements to the game?

  • SaberJ

Wow. 400 points, huh? They are aware that there aren’t many people playing the game in multiplayer, right? I can’t warrant purchasing a multiplayer component for a game that likely won’t have a community to speak of 2-3 months down the road. Even if it is just $5.

If they had thought this one through, they would’ve combined a few single player elements into the DLC so that it doesn’t become completely worthless when nobody is playing multiplayer anymore.

Mind you, this is coming from someone that is enjoying the multiplayer portion of the game. It’s been what, 3 weeks since it was released, and it’s already sitting at #18 on the top 20 Xbox Live activity list?

  • Doug DeJulio

No single-player elements to this? Like, not even the new weapon upgrades or anything? Please, if there’s *any* single-player aspect to this, someone let us know. If it’s pure multiplayer it’s not worth $5, but if it adds new behavior for the weapons in single-player, that’s worth $5 to me.

  • ShaggyB

    so its all multiplayer?

not sure i care then…. planning to finish bioshock 1 first… then play 2… im betting by the time i hit 2 it wont be being played online much….

  • Seleste

Yes, yes, you guys clearly know better, why not get hired by Irrational Games as DLC counselors?

  • rastansaga

400 points for a key to unlock content already on the disk. sounds like a great deal!!

  • MACPH1ST0

Yeah rastansaga I noticed the 108K file size too. I guess that’s the business model we have to deal with now in the gaming industry with the popularity of DLC: “milk ‘em for all you can get”!

  • SaberJ

Seleste: I’d love to get hired to tell the people making these decisions that they are morons. But I’d be afraid that I wouldn’t get paid due to a lack of DLC sales.

I’m sure ultimately it’s a win/win situation for Irrational. They get whatever sucker money they can, and didn’t have to do any extra work in the process. But that still doesn’t make it a GOOD decision. I hope they enjoy their ~$500 in sales.

  • Olimite

    108kb download.

Erm, this should have been in the game already!

  • Ark Hunter

Rank increase to 50. Lame. Just a patch. Other stuff already on disk. Even for just $5.

  • Crown TSA

400 points for an unlock key? No, I don’t like the sound of that 2k, thanks anyway.

  • sepulturas666

I’m not even touched the multiplayer so far. It’s all about SP in Bioshock.
This paid patch is ridiculous. For 4-5 years most of the developers still didn’t know how to make decent DLC. I hope no one bought this thing.

  • The Grim Heaper

Erm, no thanks. The multiplayer glitches every few minutes, freezing my 360. Paying $5 for this just to have my 360 freeze over and over again doesn’t sound fun at all…

  • SilentHunter382

The fact that 2K had the content already on the disc is one of the reason I am not getting it. 2K = New Capcom.

  • rogXue

DO NOT BUY this DLC for Bioshock 2!

It’s 108KB which means it’s already on the disk. These crooks are charging $5 for something you should have received in the first place. Avoid this pack.

  • El Cid

MS should have a policy requiring publishers to specifically state if they are charging for an unlock code to release content already on the disc.

  • OPT1CS

Hey Major, any chance of getting 160 MS PTS from those RE5 add-ons. I bought all of them on day 1 of each release. Had I known or had it been announced, I could’ve saved a few bucks, I would’ve waited.

Lost in Nightmares, Desperate Escape, Costume Pack 1, Costume Pack 2 = 1120
Untold Stories (Everything from above) = 960

  • Atomicow

You should get these guys on your show to explain why they think it’s okay to charge for content that’s already on the disc and call it “DLC”. You should also ask them why they think it’s okay that people are able to pay for an unfair advantage over others. All the new weapon upgrades are available as soon as you have the weapon they go on, and the new Elephant Gun add-on makes that already overpowered weapon even worse.

  • wolfzero01

If like everyone is saying that this just unlocks stuff that is on the disc, then 2k should be ashamed of themselves. I hope this isn’t going to be a common thing with DLC from now on.

  • Blue Thunder28

Instead of separating everyone online this should have been free… it’s not like Halo where 900,000 people will buy the new maps this game isn’t that big online this will only hurt its player base.

  • mccalejk

Ugh… didn’t this game just come out? I can’t stand when developers hold things that should have been in the original game and then charges for them.

  • vander97

    Finally

  • Cr4zyM3x1cAn

This is a worthless DLC guys. Most of the stuff you don’t unlock until you’re levels 40+ which is mostly none of us since MW2 and BFBC2 own this game when it comes to online multiplayer. Not to mention its just an unlock code to buy something that was already on the disc. Companies have to make money, but then you think how they could of released a game sooo buggy. What would be the point of buying this multiplayer only DLC when everyone disconnects on multiplayer every 15 minutes. 2K released a DLC pack instead of releasing a patch… what a fail. When it comes to 2k:
    Communities Problems<$$$

  • simon zephyr

remember those bioshock 1 dlcs? Those were free.

  • chiruno99

    Pepperidge Farm remembers

  • I kauan I

I love Bioshock, but being only multiplayer content and already on disc… ¬¬ No, thanks.

  • Ai Kago

Surely this is against the law, paying for something on a disc you already own and have paid for. Even if it isnt, there should be some law to inform buyers on the front of the packaging that there is content on the disc that is locked unless payment is made.

  • MathGuy42

Interesting. This doesn’t show up as a Game Add-on if you just search for Bioshock 2 in the Marketplace. But the link in this blog post does work.

Also, I agree with everyone that 400 MSP for an unlock key is rather greedy.

  • K1LLER HORNET

    This is disgusting.
Having to pay for content that is already on the disc.

This is nickel & diming at it’s fullest.

  • Quaranj

I bought it for a couple of reasons. 1) I was at level 40 in Bioshock 2 and had capped out, 2) I was hoping there would be an accompanying title update which would also address the freeze issues.
The 108k D/L is simply an unlock code as no title update was required/happened for others to see me use the new Oscar character (Who happens to be AWESOME BTW.) I agree with the sentiments that titles should have some sort of notice that additional fees are required to unlock the full content of the disc that you just purchased. I’ll leave it at that.
I am enjoying my ascension beyond level 40 though. Many are stating they don’t like the multiplayer element, and that is fine… I think there are those who really hate it, and those who really like it, I am among the latter. I leveled up to 40 in multiplayer prior to starting the campaign. With how short the story is in comparison to the 1st, I would have preferred a longer story on the main disc, and perhaps a second disc with more maps for the multiplayer element. If it would have added to the price tag, I still would have bought it.
I jumped on the 360 bus after the Elite systems came out, mostly from being bitter about original xbox titles stopping dead after the 360 was released aside from a few sports games. (I hope you learn something from Sony here, PS1 and 2 titles were still regularly released after the launch of the new platform.) Bioshock was the first title I bought for my 360 and I have been hooked ever since.

  • Sausage Villan

I’m not so sure that this is one of those things that they tried to cheat us …. i think this time it’s one of those things where they use in-game assests in a new way and that doesn’t require massive lines of code

that being said it should have been a tad cheaper like a buck or two … regardless i’ll wait for the single player dlc because the multiplayer is not my cup of tea .. if i am going to play online i am playing COD MW2

  • Gonzo345

GTFO . I wont pay for an unlock download who doesn’t adds chievos!

  • Z4M0

As is known that some use this as official live marketplace new releases source and there’s no post bout it, just let you know there’s TOY SOLDIERS related stuff at the avatars marketplace.

Concerning to Biosock 2 DLC it sound like companies are offering less and less but keep asking for our money. It’s sad that you have to pay high (GTA IV DLC cost as much as the game itself nowadays) for fairly lenghty/quality oriented extra content.

  • Mystakill

    @Z4M0,

That’s why any game which even hints of vast amounts of DLC (and day-one DLC at that), automatically goes to the end of my games-to-purchase list for the inevitable GoTY Edition. ME2, DA:O, and Borderlands are on there right now :)

  • ShaggyB

im not so mad about unlock key… 2k isnt the first to pull that one… im more mad that its just multiplayer…. perhaps im jaded but i bought this game for single player purposes…. thats what i loved about bioshock 1….

why not put a little of each in it?

  • Led Fraggelin

Don’t like it? Don’t buy it. If you love the game…support the game. Content costs money and if you show support for the game with your $$$ there will be more content and more sequels.

  • Atomicow

    @Sausage Villan

New character models, their dialogue, their audio diaries, new masks, and new weapon models can’t be added with a few lines of code. This stuff is on the disc, period.

  • Cr4zyM3x1cAn

    @Led Fraggelin

Why shows support for a game you paid $60 for and receive not even a finished game. Makes you wonder if they even hired people to test their product. I don’t see the point in supporting a company who’s sole purposed is to CHEAT you out of your money. What they should have done was released the patch to fix online, and then the DLC, but its obvious what their intentions are. I would have bought the DLC if they would have put off the release date a little later, to ensure a quality product.

  • Atomicow

@Mystakill ME2′s DLC has all been free so far, assuming you bought the game new and not used.

  • Shonk jr

This sort of crap is making me wary of all dlc
dlc should be added later in the life of the game
    to expand it

    not as a cash cow

i want $5 back from the price i paid for the game
    for the stuff you removed

  • Velete

108K unlock code, they could have at least have bundled it with a patch ffs

  • KP ScuzzyBunny

Meh…my copy of Bioshock 2 is still unopened. Too much work, and too many other games to play…of topic, Major, when is the tailgating grill going to be on sale as an Avatar prop? I see it in the pictures for the Block Party, but it cannot be found!! I want a grill for my TX BBQ!!!

  • KP ScuzzyBunny

and also off topic…why does Microsoft continue to let EA run their own servers? They are unreliable (especially when a game launches as they always try to get by with the minimum server support so it’s always at capacity and crashing), they stop supporting games (making games impossible to go back and complete), and WHO SCHEDULES MAINTENANCE FOR 4 HOURS A NIGHT OVER A FRIDAY AND SATURDAY??? On top of making some new rules or getting someone to address the unlock code issue, lets hear some answers on the continuation of FAIL by EA and their servers!

  • DanMW

Not much point complaining about it here, MajorNelson is letting us know that it’s available, if you are unhappy about this, go complain to 2kgames.

Bishock 2 is a great game, I haven’t touched the multiplayer, and I don’t intend to.

In my onpinion, unlock keys for content already on the disc/game dlc file should be illegal.

  • OROSCO

Should be ashamed to sell unlock keys for content already on the disc. I should charge $1 to read my posts.

  • DavidGX

This is already on the disk. I already paid for it. This is a fraud.

  • WinterSnowblind

I really hope this sells badly.

Gamers, and more importantly developers need to learn that this kind of crap is unacceptable. By all means, produce new content for a game and sell it on to us afterward, but when it’s clearly nothing but an unlock key it should at least be free, if not just in the frikken game to begin with.

  • MathGuy42

I can understand unlock keys which don’t affect actual game play and are meant as incentives for pre-order or special editions. Sgt Johnson in H3: ODST or the Honor Guard Wraith and Flaming Warthog in Halo Wars come to mind. Having those extras gives you no advantage, but might make the game more entertaining. But I don’t like the idea of actually needing to buy an unlock key, especially when it changes actual game play.

I’m also not a fan of this trend for instant DLC. As others have said, let’s have the first version be as good as possible and give buyers a few months to enjoy it. Then start working on DLC after the game is already out the door.

  • A Place for Us

    Bad move 2K.

  • Mystakill

    @Atomicow
I know the ME2 DLC has been free, so far, but but this is EA we’re talking about here. I don’t agree with them demanding $15 to buy the *storefront* for those who either rent or buy used. Imagine how pissed people will be when they start charging for the content on top of the store. That’d be like Best Buy charging a cover to walk in the door…

At the very least, holding off on purchasing these cash-grabbers will guarantee that I’ll be able to pick them up for less than their initial $60 DLC-less cost.

  • Sausage Villan

yeah i realize that this is one of those situations that they try to rip us off … and they tried to give some BS reason as to why they didn’t have it from the start… i am getting a little tired of game makers/developers trying to rip us off with dlc for every battlefield BC2 and mass effect 2 with free dlc that’s actually DOWNLOADABLE there’s a bioshock 2 and resident evil 5 that charge twice for content on disc

  • Mr Weazle

    Im not angry, just disapointed
