Xbox 360 By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • TripQue

I must admit the new 360 is impressive. I think you might have garnered a bit more goodwill if you gave one to folks who have been through multiple replacements of their original 360 consoles (on my fifth) instead of (or in addition to!) the room full of press at the briefing. Pretty good PR move nonetheless. My personal bitterness notwithstanding, awesome announcement! :-P

  • Joecr

I’d like to know specs. Like the number of USB ports, does it use a power brick, what exactly is the port next to the Ethernet port, does the 802.11 N also support 802.11 a, b, g networks?

What ports are on the front? Did you remove the memory card slots?

  • Velete

Looks like an ugly PC case imho

  • Biomonkey

I’m so getting one this week, been wanting to get a Black 360 for a while and I glad I held out.

  • Kroesis

I think it look pretty cool albeit a bit shiny (fingerprints!!!). It’s good that it’s not going to be more expensive than the original despite it’s built in WiFi, but seeing as my old Pro is still functioning, I have no reason to buy one yet.

  • EvilTrovis

Looks pretty ugly to me. I don’t see why anyone would buy that for looks.

  • Nintendo Tim

Thank you for a user-serviceable HDD. It’s about time.

  • Surly x Duff

So why the stealth launch? What exactly is IN the box? Cables, accessories, etc? Is there a power brick? Any specs? Is there a 3 year warranty on this if it dies like the previous revisions? Apple has gained my trust for these types of launches because their hardware is solid. MS has not. I have been saving up to get a 250 gb system (I figured there would be a Halo Reach LE console), so I am interested in this. But no way am I “jumping in” without some more details.

  • Xlrking

Id buy it, but my xbox still works, so no need to.

  • ClintBeastWoodx

I love it but I am kinda mad at the fact that I just bought an Elite about a month and half ago and if I would have known about this new one for the EXACT same price I would have waited…

  • fidgetwidget

    A few questions…

I understand that the Hard Drive in it is swapable, and is hidden under a door at the bottom… but that it isn’t the same as the current 360 hard drives.
So that leads to two questions
    – Is there a way to transfer my content from my current 360 to this new one?
    and
    – Will I be able to put any laptop sized hard drive into this new xbox 360? or will I have to purchase one from Microsoft?

If I am able to get my content from my current one onto the new one with ease, I can see myself getting this new one with KINECT this holiday!

  • L1VERPOOL

Just remember if you have upgraded your 360 in the past year you can’t transfer your licenses till the year runs out…

  • BrooksterMax

I don’t care about looks, is it more reliable and well ventilated that is the most important thing.

I guess this is designed with the Kinetic thing in mind, given they both use black plastic. :)

  • tabicat

What are the exact dimensions for the new Xbox 360?

  • Velete

Seeing as i’m on my 5th 360 in a row maybe MS could throw me a discount:P lol

  • GeneralGrey

I just bought a new elite last week – now it’s already obsolete. Thanks for the heads-up Microsoft!

  • Gonzo345

Nice, but it looks like a PC case lol

  • SirPoonga

Looks cool. I have the same question as others, no memory card slot or just one under that door in the front? I know the system now supports usb drives as memory cards, is that what new owners of this will have to use? If the memory card slot was removed, why? Does Microsoft not think some of us take are profiles and games saves over to friends? If they have this new xbox would friends have to change their memory cards?

  • Anonymous

Some official details would be nice. The drive is user serviceable? That’s news to me, I have yet to hear any official word on it. How about the CPU/GPU die size since that’s been the problem with heat on the other systems?

It looks pretty, but I, like others, have a distrust of MS hardware given my own past with 360 units. Until I hear some real details, I’m not dropping 299 on new hardware.

  • Exu

    That thing is grotesque.

  • Capt Moore

I am interested in knowing the fine details. Will the original xbox 360 hard drive “attach” to the new unit? Can I transfer the data instead. Is it a standard SATA hard drive in the unit, I may consider replacing with either a larger hard drive, or a SSD…….
Will the cables from the old xbox still work on the new unit?

Right now I can get an official 250 gig Xbox hard drive for $130, and the wireless N adapter is $80…. Can we expect a price drop on these accessories for your loyal customers who would prefer to upgrade instead of a new unit….

(I’m sure all of these details will come out soon…)

  • Shafnitz

I wonder if Customer Support would be able to push up your license transfer eligibility date if you decided to buy one of these.

  • STONED1999

Where is the damn bluray. Can someone tell me the actual details (not rumor) on why MS still has not upgraded the dvd player.

  • TheMovieMiguel

Joecr i dont know if they put memory ports on it but considering they dont “support” them any more i doubt it.

    MovieMiguel.com

  • Codename6

I wish they could have made the power supply internal.

  • Whet Wetty

I like the looks… almost Lamborghini-esque. I’ll be getting one because I’ve been waiting for the rumored slim. Glad it has the 250Gb + Wifi. Now I can install ALL 40 of my games to the system AND keep my Arcade games handy. Now that I’m on my 4th console repair, any chance for a discount MS?

  • Whet Wetty

Oh yeah… forgot to ask: How is that license transfer thing going to work. My most recent repair was in for a dead CD drive just last month. I’m not waiting 11 months to transfer my content.

  • Shafnitz

@Whet Wetty: When your console is replaced by MS, they’re supposed to handle the license transfer for you. That doesn’t count towards your yearly use of the transfer tool.

  • chiruno99

Now I can buy my console again but now with built in wi-fi.

  • moocow21

Looks cool, but I’ll wait for the next price drop. The only reason companies ever do these “slim” redesigns is to cut production costs, and sadly they don’t like to pass that on to the consumers in the form of a price cut.

  • Capt Moore

I saw a “fact sheet” at kotaku web site, looks like memory units (along with the old hard drives) are not supported with the new unit. One special port for natal (I thought it was firewire in the pictures) that will provide both power and USB to the Natal/Kinect camera, older xboxes will use USB and a separate power plug (great job to support both old and new series…)

Shows 5 USB ports, (3 back, 2 front) Optical Audio built in, support for SD composite cables, HDMI (no mention of HD component cable support)

No mention of IR ports on the new unit, which is a shame as I like my xbox media remote, I wish games supported it such as 1 vs 100… Maybe Natal will make it useless however…

Please correct me if I’m wrong with anything!

  • Zorak Malor

My biggest question has already been asked but I really hope they answer it soon. How do we get content off our old systems onto the new drive? I’m looking at you Major.. find an answer :P

  • Alimaggs

Interesting… I just bought an Xbox 360 Elite last week and transferred over my licenses. Is there anyway, if I was to take my new console back and swap it for one of these “slim” machines, customer support would be willing to transfer my licenses again?

  • Ai Kago

If my new one, which is still under guarantee just happens to die, can I demand one of these newer models citing the fact that its a design flaw that it keeps breaking?

  • Capt Moore

Oh, and will this new unit work with the HDDVD drive? I bought one on closeout, although I don’t use it much I would like to still watch the HDDVD’s I have from time to time……

Of course, I would prefer much more if microosoft would enable any common USB external bluray drive to be plugged in to watch movies…. HINT HINT HINT….. :)

  • RayZakk

    I have a few questions?

    1. Do we still have to use microsoft hard drives or can we use our own now?
    2. Have they fixed the bumping thing ala the ring of disc death?
    3. The xbox is supposed to be whisper quiet but what about the dvd drive?
    4. If this comes kinect ready does what about older systems? Are they going to be able to use kinect and how close can you be to the camera because I don’t have a lot of room?

  • BadFlounder

It looks fine to me. Sure there are a couple things it doesn’t have like an internal power supply but that’s not the end of the world. The fact it’s much quieter makes all the difference in the world to someone like me.

  • RayZakk

One more question. Can it lay on it’s side? All the pictures show it standing.

  • BadFlounder

    @ RayZakk

    1. Yes you still have to use a microsoft licensed HDD. The HDD is now different but still proprietary.
    2. I have no idea what you are trying to say here…
    3. DVD drives cannot be made “whisper quiet” so it will be the same as ever. Install your games to the 250 GB HDD and enjoy!
    4. This is speculation but most assumptions are the port on the new 360 will power the kinect camera. Old systems will work fine though you may need to run a power cord to the kinect camera.

  • SEF Jhoanmiguel

Cuando Estara Disponible a la venta?

  • Capt Moore

More info at joystiq.com… the transfer software is built into the new system, so you just use a hard drive transfer cable (I got one when I bought my 120 gig at retail years ago, and the built in system software to transfer your content from the older console.

Oh, and all the accessories they see are now black, including the chatpad. (I think they were only white before…)

  • BadFlounder

I’m 100% sure it can lay on it’s side. I wouldn’t worry about that.

  • SEF Jhoanmiguel

    When? Available on sale

  • Hauz20

    Que?

  • Rykin Poe

I still wish it was designed like a standard piece of home theater equipment. That is probably the only thing that would inspire me to trade my current one for one of these. Hopefully the Arcade units stick around for a while so I can snag one of them the next time mine breaks down since it is finally out of the Red Ring Replacement Plan.

  • LawdaddyCO

That was such a lame press conference. Very disappointed. We’ll see how the competition does.

  • AnEternalEnigma

Microsoft should give a free Xbox 360 Slim to everyone who’s had at least one Xbox 360 red ring on them and who has been an Xbox Live member since the launch of the Xbox 360.

  • Capt Moore

I would love to pick one up, but my unit is still under warranty until November, doesn’t make much since to replace mine just to get a smaller size. Still, it would be great if I was shopping for a new unit, and Natal should be a bunch of fun.

  • HereWeGo

Other than this and the Halo Reach/Gears of War stuff; I’m highly disappointed in MicroSoft this year round. For the past year, I’ve had high hopes with Project Natal…Now I don’t even want it as badly…I have a nintendo wii…I’ve played 80% of those games already. I wanted games. =(. Not really complaining, just stating my opinion of their E3 presentation.

  • JoJoStarFire

Darn I would have been the first one to write, but oh, well. I wish the previous ones were like this one. Now I am am debating if I should get a this new Xbox 360 or a PS3(which I was originally going to get), just for the design, built in WIFI and Kinect capabilities. I might get both, and leave my old system to my daughter. Oh well, let’s see what happens.

  • AMT

    Agree with above:

Can I replace the hdd with SSD drives?

    also

Is the USB controller better, thus making USB speed faster?

  • mig0

    Got a few questions.

    - will old consoles be phased out? If so, will an arcade version without a HDD be sold?
    - the HDD looks very different. Will it be user upgradeable or will I have to buy a proprietary HDD like I do with current xbox users? Obviously existing HDDs won’t work with the new console.
    - How do I migrate from my 120gb to a new console?
    - I have memory units… can I use them on this?

  • Stoney0ne

i just bought an elite 2 weeks ago!

    son of a gun

  • Capt Moore

    To Mig0

Memory units are not compatible with the new system.

No body knows if it’s a shell that any hard drive can be put into, but most reports think that the new hard drive is propreitary.

Joystiq is reporting that to transfer from the older system, you need the USB transfer cable, the software to transfer is built into the new unit, so the disc is no longer required

Not sure if they will sell the older arcade version along side the slim version once stock is exhausted.

  • SirPoonga

STONED1999, you don’t want bluray on your xbox. A bluray drive is slower than a dvd drive. While it looks like Microsoft finally got the clue that the hard drive should come with the system and be internal they still need to support the older systems and can’t assume there is always a hard drive to install games to. This is why many games on the PS3 have 5gig+ installs.

Games on the xbox expect a certain performance from the optical drive for optimal load times that you wouldn’t get with bluray. Bluray sacrifices speed for enormous capacity. You wouldn’t want a system that requires you to install every disc you put into the system.

  • Capt Moore

Mig0, joystiq is now reporting microsoft said in an after press event that they will not manufacture any more of the older model xbox 360′s… So it looks like the end of the xboxs that don’t include a hard drive……

  • krisxx

Was not impressed either. I wanted games. Why no XBLA games announced? Kinect just looks like a Super Wii or Wii 2 add on. I was over the motion crap years ago, dunno why M$ and Sony feel the need to do it now.

  • LawdaddyCO

    @SirPoonga

I actually do want a system where I could install every game. I don’t want to listen to a harrier jet in my family room while playing games.

  • MotorCitySarge

Well, there is one room/tv in this house that doesn’t have an Xbox360 hooked up to it. Sooooo, bring it on. I’ll replace my main console with the new one and put one in the guest room!

    -Sarge

  • gbus

I’m moderately annoyed now that I just bought my 5th replacement xbox last week. How about a trade-up program for those of us that have spent way more than we should on xbox?

  • VENOM MADNESS

    @LawdaddyCO

Try taking the tv off mute.

  • Blue Thunder28

I am buying this in a heartbeat.

  • RayZakk

    @BadFlounder

It’s entirely possible most people may never experience the ring of disc death. There is nothing to stop a disc from hitting the laser inside the 360 dvd drive if for some reason your 360 gets bumped. If it is jarred or bumped while a disc is being read, it can make contact with the laser causing a ring around the disc where it was reading at the time ruining it. I was wondering if this has been fixed because after all these years this is still an issue. If you play with others in the room or pets it can be dangerous.

  • mig0

@captmoore- so not even an adapter to USB for the old MUs? That kind of stinks. I have Worms and Geometry wars on some memory units.

Joystiq is reporting that old hardware 360s will no longer be sold.

  • Capt Moore

Kotaku has a 5min video of the new unit, shot with an apple 3GS iPhone.

No USB adapter that I know of for the memory card, but can you use your current xbox to copy the file onto a USB stick or the older xbox’s hard drive?

Is it possible to make a custom adapter?

  • VENOM MADNESS

@mig0 have you tried to transfer them under the new data transfer system. I have transfered some items that couldn’t be transfered under the old system but, now could. Try it if you haven’t yet.

  • Joecr

I was glad to watch http://kotaku.com/5563360/video-walkthrough-of-the-new-xbox-360 which did cover several on my questions. It has 5 USB ports (2 in front with 3 in the back), 1 port for Kinect (which looks like a modified USB port to me), the HDD is in the bottom if you have it upright, etc..

  • Capt Moore

My logic for those of us with old units……

If we need wifi now, purchase a bridge like apple’s airport express (wireless n version), as the xbox specific accessory is not needed with the new unit, and is the same cost.

Do not buy a larger hard drive for the old unit, unless it is very cheap, as it will not be compatible with new console.

If able, keep, find, borrow xbox transfer cable, do not need the DVD as it is built into the new unit.

Hold off buying any ir accessories, such as the media remote, or 3rd party remotes unless it is confirmed to work with the new unit.

Hddvd drives are unknown to work with new unit.

Do not but the vision camera, kinect will replace all functions.

With optical built in, do not buy hdmi kit from microsoft, optical breakout cable is not used on new unit.
Component cables are fine to purchase.

Consider buying “white accessories”, such as white chat pad and headset now, new stuff will probably be black only.

Don’t buy faceplates or memory units.

Any other suffusions for those of us with “legacy” equipment

  • UnarmedGorilla

Arrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhh…. I just bought an elite to replace my old 20gb that red-ringed. I so would have held out for this new beast!!!!

  • waldo15

Now I know what I want for father’s day :)

  • Bakura

It looks nice, but why does Microsoft refuse to put a blu-ray drive in the system? That’s the only reason why I still have my PS3. I don’t get it.

  • BryceS

I tend to agree that going from a subtly curved, tasteful case to something so angular is a pretty strange decision! It’s certainly striking, but is that what you want in your living room? It seems to have been designed to appeal to a pretty narrow section of the market.

I wouldn’t mind the extra USB ports, but a cheap USB hub was given away with my Rock Band kit, which does the job for the time being!

Ah well, my Elite still looks good next to my Sky+ HD box and has only been replaced for RROD once so far, so lets hope it survives a bit longer…

  • Anonymous

Well, I got to see the unboxing at both engadget and joystiq.

NOT impressed. Still a proprietary drive? Give me a freakin’ break. Now you have even LESS of an excuse for why you want outrageous prices for your storage. Can’t justify it with your proprietary enclosure anymore. Can’t wait to hear the new, ludicrous, reason.

  • mig0

The version of worms and geo wars I have were included with 512mb memory cards I owned, so they’re not transferrable. It’s not a huge, huge loss but it’s unfortunate if I’m unable to do anything with these MUs on newer systems. I suppose I could try once again.

  • Slider2nl

I like to know when we will recieve the new dasboard on our old 360 console, can we use the new dashboard with controllers? Or do you need the Kinect for the new dashboard?

    Quote from press release:
“The New Dashboard and Kinect for Xbox 360. Here at E3 we’ve shown how Kinect for Xbox 360 will transform the way we experience entertainment. We’ve updated the dashboard with a new look and feel that makes it more inviting and open.”

  • Z4M0

Looks ugly IMHO and don’t like the shiny finish.

Now, I don’t get the point about people saying his/her xbox 360 is now obsolete. This (have it any official name?) does just the same as any 360 on the market, it just has built in wifi but games will play the same on both.

  • Joergen8

Just what the doctor ordered. The same but slightly better.

Wont be getting it anytime soon though, no need really until my third box (this time a Jasper) blows up. My fourth will THEN be this slim edition. Even if I get really itchy for one, I’ll wait at least a few months to see if these RROD as well.

The build quality will probably be lower than the originals, what with one-chip CPU+GPU etc cost cutting, it’s way cheaper to manufacture. The PS2 had several revisions and it went backwards each time, right until all you got was a DVD-case sized flip top empty hull of nothing.

  • ElektroDragon

Ugly? You guys have no taste… It looks phenomenal! And if it really is whisper quiet, I’m upgrading. Question is, how do we transfer our content from our old drives to the new machine? Major?

  • DavidGX

It looks nice but is this one going to fail 6 times like the ones we’ve had?

  • Doh Ray Egon

Yeah…nice to see a room full of journalists get one for free, meanwhile I’m on my 4th 360 due to one red ring and two E74 errors, and a charge and play kit that decided to stop working. And in return I get a Frankenstein 360 (a refurbished one) that will most likely break in another year from now.

  • SpaceNinjaDino

    Good move on the WiFi.

  • Spargo CXVII

Yeah I like, but I want a Halo Reach Paint-job on it. On the Xbox itself!!!!! KTHSBY

  • Lethbridge

Any idea about the infrared port? I don’t seem to see one.

  • Ganon255

I’m in for one. Trading in my elite ASAP. It would be nice to see detailed stat sheet regarding this SKU and how it will affect those who are upgrading.

  • The Grim Heaper

I’ll be trading in my RROD X-Box and my Current Pro Model for one of these. Pretty damn slick, if I say so myself!

  • Bawitdaba1337

    Love the new design!

    I do have some questions:

    1. In the wake of the “Vista Ready” issues and legal battles, what does “Kinect Ready” mean?

    2. Can the internal hard drive be swapped freely with any hard drive I want or is it locked down still to Microsoft branded ones?

    3. What is the “AUX” port on the back above the USB ports?

    4. What is the CPU, GPU, and RAM specs on this new unit?

    5. Can we play games without a disc needed in the tray?

    I hope this information helps!

    New 360 is called… Xbox S

  • Anonymous

I will be able to answer more questions if you ask here. http://tjmarsh.wordpress.com/

  • SCS 85

About damn time. But it took so long. At least the 360 slim is finally here. Finally, after 4 years they have features that match the PS3. Took a while, but I’m glad its finally a reality. Was beginning to lose hope.

  • mccalejk

lmao @Rayzakk, “Can it lay on it’s side?” Seriously?

  • Lucky 13 X

    Looks good.
    .
I am happy to see that Xbox is finally at the point where wireless can be built in withuot an increase in price to the consumer, and wireless N to boot. I like how you called it “the console the community asked for” in the product page’s Xbox.com video. Great marketing line Major, you should have Xbox Promotions go with that. :-)
    .
Now any details on whether this version comes with a controller with the improved D pad from the other regions that needed it for futball games? I would hope that such an opportunity is not missed. You could even sell the “improved controller” as a separate item. I know I would buy it.

  • Lucky 13 X

Reading though some of the comments, I think it looks pretty okay.
It reminds me of some of the Alienware computer designs which is not a bad thing IMHO.
    .
Also, I would not mind having one in Ferrari red. And yes, that is an actual unqiue color. Hopefully, the next Forza Kinect game will prompt them to make one in such a color for a RE 5 like bundle.

  • MACPH1ST0

I think everyone pretty much saw this slim redesign coming so MS could cut production costs. But considering their track record when it comes to hardware reliability issues, I think I’ll just let all the diehard early adopters be my guinea pigs to expose any potential redesign flaws before I even think about getting one of these.

  • bullka LT

Here’s an unboxing video. It answers some questions (how does the hdd look like, number of USB, AUX (I think it’s for Kinect.. combining USB and power in one port), noise etc.).

    http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/14/xbox-360-250gb-first-unboxing/

  • S7 Knowledge

Man! If only I had some kind of precognition to know there would be a new sleek redesigned Xbox 360 coming out at E3 this year! Alas, I at least got a nice birthday present in the Modern Warfare Edition 360, with all that storage space. Sadly my license transfer was done at that time too, from old console with 120GB added HDD to new 250GB MW2 console. Here’s only hoping that Microsoft will decide to lift the restrictions for those who buy these updated consoles, perhaps just this one time since it would be a positive incentive to promote to existing 360 owners. Sure the data can be transferred without an issue, but the licenses for all your content, that some games require to work, is gonna make a purchase now an unfortunate problem. Looks like I’m waiting till Kinect release.

  • JoBE242

I love it! I love it! I love! I really hope that whisper quiet really means whisper quiet this time. What about SSD, is it possible?

  • Whetzel

I’m sorry, but I can’t help but to laugh at all of the people who said, “but I just bought a new system xx number of days/weeks ago”. I thought that everyone knew that you should never buy anything that close to E3. New things are almost always announced at E3.

  • AOClaus

Damn. I just bought a replacement 360 on the 6th because mine was experiencing GPU failure. Now I feel like I got totally screwed.

  • K04 Passat

I own over 300 Xbox 360 retail games, many duplicates in there so we can play Halo 3, Crackdown, RE5, etc over LAN. Got to be getting toward 200 XBLA games… Buy a lot of dlc…

I’d love to have a 360 slim, but I have 4 consoles. I should just be comped at this point. Already own the Modern Warfare 2 console, Resident Evil 5 console, 20 gig white Pro, and 120 gig black Elite…

Yes, I know, not being realistic.

  • Sneltje

But question remains how do we migrate our data to that new HDD is the connection the same or?

    Chop!!

  • Beitamax

    built-in wifi… Thank You MS!

  • wolfzero01

with the Best Buy warranty on my current 360 about to expire I was going to get an Elite but now might wait a little while & get this. about time you added built in WiFi, its too bad that the hard drive is still proprietary, but atleast you can transfer stuff from an old HDD to the new one

  • Twisk

I’m on my 7th, yes – SEVENTH Xbox 360. …my latest one is still so crazy loud, mannnnn I wish I had this new model years ago.

Anyway, great to see a quieter model is finally out. I’m interested in getting one, but I’m very, very, VERY concerned about how these will hold up (will they bite the big one at the rate the original 360s continue to croak?).

  • TripQue

Richard Mitchell over at Joystiq Xbox reported that the old data-transfer cables would work to move your data and that the software necessary to accomplish the move is built-in to the new console. He also reported that the cable itself will be available for purchase for around $20. Glad I held on to mine from the 120 GB HD kit!

  • aStrangeDisease

I am buying this. 100% guaranteed. It looks super sexy.
My wife wants a second Xbox anyway so this is the perfect excuse to buy one.

    Major!

Can we put an SSD drive in the Xbox S???????????????

  • chiruno99

It still looks polly wolly crappy to me.

  • HedlessChickn

I red ringed last Friday. Got my shipping label today. We’ll see if they send the new 360. I certainly hope so. I’ve gone through 4 of them already.

  • Aynodok

And as I could see in some unboxing videos the box shows Black Chatpad and black wireless headset. Finally they come black! XD

  • Quicksilver4648

Someone might have asked this earlier, not sure.

The new Xbox 360 uses a proprietary hard drive and this leads me to two questions.
    1) Who did Microsoft change to a new hard drive style yet still keep it proprietary?
    2) The new Xbox 360 comes with a 250GB hard drive built in, but will Microsoft offer higher memory levels later on? I know 250GB is a lot but some people will always find a way to fill it up.

  • cinco312

Before I jump in I need more info. The license transfer is what I’m most worried about. My console died a few months and got a replacement and I had to transfer everything over, and the policy is ONCE per year. Will you guys be changing that? That’s kinda a deal breaker for me.

  • Casserole

There are no cooling vents round the back, I am impressed.

Does that mean the fan is to the side, thus the hot air blows out of the top (if in the horizontal position)?

  • TheReverendSlim

Yes, but WHERE IS THE IR PORT? I’d hate to think that all my video watching and Media Center stuff can’t be controlled by my Harmony 880 anymore. Not a single media outlet has commented on the existence of an IR port on this new model.

  • cinco312

    @TheReverendSlim

Oh wow, I didn’t even think of that. I got the Harmony 900 and would literally die if I can’t use it. If I can’t use it, I’m not buying it then. I control my AC and Microwave with this thing.

  • CALMADOR

    Wow…. the PS3 just died! O.O

  • Sneeches

Pre ordered mine today, should be here monday :) Can’t fucking wait!!!! LOVE IT!!!

  • I DLord I

So will 3 red rings still indicate a hardware failure on this new model?

  • Atomicow

Looks like you tried to copy Alienware. Too bad Alienware is ugly as hell.

I guess, in the end, functionality takes priority though.

  • EndrzGame

Looks great, I’ll get mine asap. Well done MS! =)

  • Kroesis

@TheReverendSlim and everyone else asking about the IR:
You know the flappy part at the fron hiding the USB ports, well there is an suare’ish part just above it enscribed with something I can’t quite make out. If you see the image below from Joystiq, you can see something like an IR receiver behind it.

    http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/xbox-360-slim-live-09.jpg

  • Kroesis

… my spelling sucks today. Excuse the poor spelling.

  • DavidGX

And my sisters 360 now has a dieing DVD drive. That’s dead 360 #7 for us so far. Great job, microsoft.

  • ornery owl

Redesign looks good, I may upgrade to it. Two things come to mind.

    1. Is the new power adapter still going to be louder than the console itself?
    2. I was really hoping Microsoft would announce a blu-ray add-on drive just like the HD-DVD one.

  • mAsTeRCHEIF1234

Major, is there ever going to be a white version to replace the arcade maybe?

I never really liked the black look, and if my current xbox goes anytime in the future I would kind of like to be able to pick up a white one again

  • Gooser711

For those wondering about the IR port, it’s directly behind the bind button.
    see here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2122879

Now if someone could do some wattage tests that would be great.

  • Arte Venture

Why 250GB? Why not 1TB? You can get those cheap nowadays.

  • Kroesis

So.. no more RROD for the Xbox360s, just a Red Power Button of Doom

  • Kroesis

Major, is the reason for the Xbox360s’s ring of light only being capable of lighting green and having the power icon flash red for errors etc.. because Microsoft want to try to distance this model from the previous models reputation due to the RROD?

  • TheReverendSlim

I’m on my 13th 360 since launch. I will probably buy one of these just so I don’t have to worry about another RROD. CRACK CRACK CRACK!

  • Bawitdaba1337

@Arte Venture they are 2.5″ Laptop SATA 5400 RPM drives. You can’t pick them up at 1TB on the cheap. Why Microsoft decided to keep using this style of hard drives puzzles me, they have enough room in this bad boy case to handle standard 3.5″ desktop 7200 RPM drives

  • mccalejk

lol and OMG @ the people who think there is ANY chance of getting a new Xbox if they send their 10th defective unit in for repair. They won’t even send you a Jasper if you sent in a Falcon.

  • Wingman1977

MS has announced that all current 360 models pricing has dropped by $50 which means that the arcade is $149, elite $249, FFXIII & Splinter Cell bundles $349. MS also has announced that there will be a arcade version (which would cost $199) of the 360 S (when supplies of the current models have dried up) but didn’t say what it would come with (my bet is that it would come with a 120GB hard drive and it may or may not come with built in wi-fi).

  • RealRuler

Contemplating getting rid of my Halo 3 edition 360 for this one, only because the 20GB of HD space is finally catching up to me all these years.

  • AMT

    I’m with Bewitdaba!

7,200 HDD would have been nice. Faster, and larger size options. However, I am holding out slight hope that there will be an upgrade option on these, for SSDs!!!

Since that probably won’t happen…I am holding out hope that my SSD USB drive will work faster on this 360 compared to the prior 360s. Okay, neither of these possibilities will pan out, but oh well. :|

  • aseddon130

i should get a free one of these, i’m currently on my 12th and 13th Xbox 360. ha.

I’ll be buying this day one, it looks sexy!!!

  • CrazyRonIsHere

Congrats to everyone here. We have all been part of a 5 year long beta test for the 360. Now we finally get to see the real 360 that we expected 5 years ago.

Personally, I’m still on my first 360, which I know is a rarity. The new 360 looks great but why did it take almost 5 years?

  • fsanhueza

It´s a beautifull and a great new console, when arrive to Chile I will try to change my actual console for this one!!

I read yesterday in a newspaper that Microsoft announce that XBOX Live will be available in Chile and a few more countries in September this year!!

Is that true??. Someone of you can confirm that great new??

Thanks in advance for your information!!

  • Jerel

I’m buying one as soon as soon as I find one. I bought mine at launch and it would be nice to finally have one with an HDMI port.

  • Kroesis

    @fsanhueza:

Major Nelson tweets: Later this year Xbox LIVE comes to Brazil, Russia, Poland, Chile, Colombia, Greece, Hungary, South Africa & Czech Republic.

  • TheRev81

I already paid $300 for an elite console and now they come up with this? Yeah I could say a lot of choice things about Microsoft but they aren’t worth my breath. I refuse to give them any more money for another system, though. Their really not on my ‘good’ list anymore. Unfortunately it looks like I’m going to be going back to Sony as I’m tired of dealing with MS. At least then I’ll get a blu ray also, and even for the same price! As for people asking about why they don’t have blu ray drives on this. Blu ray is registered to Sony, they created it. Do you think they are going to offer it to MS without asking for a TON of money? And as you can see MS just wants more money, they don’t want to spend money.

  • EveofLight

Thinking about upgrading my console, but I really don’t trust MS to be honest. I already paid to extend my warranty on this console for a yr and will continue to do so; so I don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to get it fixed whenever it decides to break. I like having something to do at night when I am bored at home. I will wait a couple of months to see people’s videos on Youtube to see the overall performance on this console.

It comes in my favorite color which is black, wish they had it in another color I like which is red :) . I will also wait out for Kinect and see videos on that as well. Remember they may just show us all the glamor but I want to see the consumer’s interaction with it.

  • EveofLight

Saw a trade in offer in Gamestop and this should be an easy trade up for those who have spent a wad of cash on Microsoft products, my impulsiveness is telling me to get it but I am going to hold out. @_@

    http://www.gamestop.com/gs/specialty/tradeins/

  • Wingman1977

TheRev81, you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. Sony doesn’t own the blu-ray tech. Blu-ray was a joint venture between a bunch of companies (Sony being one of them). Sony invented the BDA (blu-ray disc association)which entails all the companies that use the technology. If MS wanted to use blu-ray, they would have to pay the BDA (not Sony) and the money gets divided up. MS don’t want to use the blu-ray tech (at least for this gen) is because they are focusing on digital downloads of movies. Not because of your dumb theory. As far as you buying you’re elite just before the S was released, tough luck. You think Sony gave anything to those who bought a ps3 just before the slim was released? NOPE!!!!! so quit your whining. If you don’t like it, don’t let the door hit you on the way out. You won’t be missed. Anyway, I just picked up my S today @ BB and it looks better in person.

  • uacostajr52

Game stop has them in stock and have sold out several times in the 3 days. I just called my local GS and the young lady said that with a trade in of the system alone (120 GB) you would need around 200 dollars plus tax included. Microsoft you sly dog. I will wait a few months and see if a non wi-fi model is released. The link that Major placed in the tweet was very informative. Thanks.

  • wolfzero01

any word on if the license transfer tool will be easier & less restrictive to use? would make getting this a no brainer then

  • chiruno99

Stop calling it slim. It’s barely smaller than the origonal. The PS3 Slim is Slim and the PS2 Slim is Slim. This new Xbox is only barely smaller but IT’S NOT SLIM.

  • JoJoStarFire

You know what I just thought of, and probably a couple of gamers out there too. They need to hook up Kinect to Modern Warfare, Gears of War and Halo with a gun prop, that is detected by the cam. I mean if it recognizes a skateboard a gun should be simple; if not with Gears then with FPS. I know lazy people don’t want to lose the use of their beloved controllers, but I would love this type of interaction, with my games; the joysticks mess up so bad sometimes, that the characters move by themselves and also a face scan update for Modern Warfare like Rainbow Six.

  • xeno3d

This is what the 360 should have been all along. Picked mine up a couple of days ago. It’s not really “whisper quiet” but it is a lot quieter than my older elite.

  • EveofLight

Picked mine up and I too will say that THIS IS how the 360 should have been made A LONG TIME AGO. This would be my 2nd console purchased, thankfully it only cost me $88 because of the trade in. Its sad how people had to waste money on the accessories only to find out there will be a system with what they were selling separately will come integrated with the new one. I think back to all the HDDs and Memory cards that have been bought for more space to then completely remove the MU and then change the way the new HDD looks and is located. To all those people who thought their elites were special to only find out there was a new one which was black as well and has more memory (laughing at my friend)…oh and to those who bought the MW2 system…ouch O_O!

MS was very slick not announcing the coming of the new console until after the release of the other stuff. I know they gained a lot of cheese there. That doesn’t make the company seem like its thinking about its consumers. I want to get the Kinect but I will wait till the price is lowered to maybe $99 or if I see it on Ebay cheap.

I’m hoping this console doesn’t bust on me a few days after I got it like the last one, because I am really digging this new console.
