Xbox 360 Games On Demand By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • rogXue

I would love to see the number of sales that the G.O.D. games bring in as you guys choose some goofy titles for the Games on Demand library…

I’ve only picked up Bioshock, was going to get Dead Space but EA had it new for $10 one day. Disk won out.

  • Spiraea22

Absolutely. The sports games with constant upgrades every year seems like a waste to put on G.O.D. Who’s actually buying SvsR 2008?!

  • fuzzyGURU

    LOTR: Conquest = fail.
There are 10 unobtainable achievements with this game as EA shut down the server on March 16, 2010 (http://www.ea.com/2/service-updates/)

  • The Bill Payer

If you’re going to release bad games and especially two of the same at least lower the price of some of the existing games on the market place.

I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited for Oblivion’s price to drop to $20. :(

  • Blue Thunder28

I almost laughed out loud when I saw LOTR Conquest on here.

  • Beluvius

LOTR: Conquest = Epic Fail. It says on the product page: “Online Multiplayer 2-16″. This is simply a lie as EA has shut down the servers for multiplayer month ago. MS be aware as at least in Germany this would be sufficient to get into serious trouble the German law.

  • a peeking duck

Once again we see the amazing disconnect the Xbox marketing team has with the consumer. Bra-vo!

  • Antarael Dulac

Overpriced shut down Multiplayer Game and more useless sportgames..yay…

Seriously what was the point of G.O.D.? As i said before…you can get ANY game on disc for lower prices…plus most of them are just not worth buying…

  • SilentHunter382

I can’t believe EA have the balls to charge €20 for a game that has no on-line mode any more.

  • JoeCool314

    @ fuzzyGURU

dude thanks for the info!! I rented this and didn’t like it, but I was not on LIVE yet and figured I didn’t like it cause it seemed like it was made for online play. I actually have this in my que to download……..going to cancel it right now. What’s the point of having achievements in a game if you can’t get them?!?! FAIL!

  • NOPECK7

A lot of Games on Demand cost way to much and almost all of them are just plan shitty. Why do we need to pay more for Digital Download? Like Perfect Dark Zero that was a launch title and we have to pay $19.99 just sell it for $9.99 because you can buy that game for $2.99 use at Gamestop.

  • metallicorphan

after the brilliant Star Wars Battlefield 1 and 2,i was really looking forward to Pandemic’s LOTR:Conquest..got it on day one, however i can’t think of a bigger disappointment this gen than that title

  • Deltacore16

EA needs to improve the way they run their servers. Even modern games such as Army of Two: 40th Day has problems connecting to the EA server. So beware of online games published by EA.

  • peejam

why would one buy old & overpriced games (30€ = 38,74$… are you out of your mind?)
i really hope M$ is losing money

  • Exu

    Hahaha no.

  • NeoVampyre

Hmm, well what can I say Major? You’ve just had 15 guys give you the correct public opinion about Game on Demand and for free! Personally I’d say fire your Market Research guys you pay a large paycheck to and continue to listen to your public, experienced gamers. So far basically nothing has been brought to Games on Demand that warrents the cost, I’d maybe pay that price for a newly released game but not some old stuff that I can get a physical version for less. Personally I’d ditch the project and spend more time bringing demos and add-on packs or do a dual release with a multiplatform new game and gather some realistic data that way!

  • HyperShot

    Attention all Livers!!
Next week on Aug.3rd will be the historical day for long awaited revival of legendary classic MMOARPG, join the revolution and fight for future!! http://forums.sega.com/showthread.php?t=336703

    PHEEL the Powa!!

  • NeoVampyre

@Hypershot; Tempting (nice link), I do love a RPG and played the original on the Master System and was curious when this came out for the 360 (in 2006!) but was put off by the addition monthly fee for the online play, or have they removed that recently? I may drag the demo of the marketplace to try this one.

  • HyperShot

@NeoVampyre; yeah, PSU still is a fee based mmo hosted on publisher’s own data server just like all the other subscription based games in the industry, btw you do get 14 days free extended period with 1st month sub(9.99 usd) afaik. Also, recently they made the expansion pack(AOTI) free that used to cost 800 MS pts and now required to go online. Offline story mode is decent enuff to get started with if you like that kind as well. Do try out demo on live but just ignore the lobby trash spammers in crowded universe, it’s nothing like that on the paid server kept separate from demo.

  • BrooksterMax

Just repeating earlier sentiments, this is a truly terrible offering much like nearly every other month. I can’t believe you are filling your servers with GBs of these game images – does anyone actually download and pay for some of these titles?

I agree with comments that your marketing team have somewhat of a disconnect with the gaming community with these overpriced and uninteresting titles.

Uploading a title like LOTR with shut down servers is poor form – I’m going off comments here as I don’t know the truth. But if that is the case, that is exceptionally dire to even pass off a title for sale in such a way.

  • The Bill Payer

Vwow, I thought all three games were $20 but I was wrong. WWE 2009 is $30….that’s not even right…

  • Blackbolt GT

    Larry,

Can we get an answer to the question of why all the Games on Demand titles are so old and overpriced? Its an entirely digital product, and the titles are usually 1+ years old, yet we are still charged high prices for them. I can go out to the shops and buy a boxed title for £9.99 brand new, sealed with awesome artwork that I can put out on a shelf and collect. These ondemand titles lack all of this and yet we are still treated to £20 titles that are years old. For instance this Lord of the Rings game even has broken multiplayer now due to the servers being shut off, why was this title ok’d? This seems very ‘money grabbing corporation’ and like Microsoft are trying to squeeze every last penny out of titles. Microsoft and Xbox generally have the better image amongst the consoles as being more gamer focused, be offering us dead old titles at higher prices, it just comes off as amateurish and pushes us away more than you’d expect. I’d love to log on and find a title thats a few years old available for £7.99 rather than £19.99!

  • BeeDizz

“Once again we see the amazing disconnect the Xbox marketing team has with the consumer. Bra-vo!”

  • rul8agn

I seriously thought this was a joke list…Guess not. Wow, what a bunch of old, unplayable, overpriced crap. Who in their right mind would even fathom charging someone $30 for a digital download of a game(Smackdown 09) that people can buy for $10 at Gamestop? Overall, the games on demand is a joke. A few are same price as used copies(GTA IV, Burnout Paradise and Revenge, and Bioshock) and one is a few bucks cheaper than a used copy(Mass Effect is $24.99 used right now)but other than that, the rest are overpriced big time(COD4 is $29.99 G.O.D. but $14.99 used) Don’t even get me started on the Xbox originals at $15 a pop when they can easily be found used for less than $10 and in some cases less than $5. Get a clue.

  • VEGEMITE 98

What gets me is that AMERICANS pay $19US for these games, and AUSTRALIA has to pay $49.95 which equates to $44US for the same freaking game!! what is with the price descrepancy.

  • Ackfu1

Yes I would like to know what Microsoft is thinking when they chose these games

  • The Bill Payer

    @Ackfu1 They think in $$$$.

    lqtm 

  • I DLord I

    Pass.

  • chiruno99

It is weird how Major didn’t even say anything about PSU’s expansion going free, it would have meen a more popular post than smelly CoD Maps.

  • wolfzero01

real smart releasing a game the has multiplayer only you can’t play it with EA shutting the servers down. while there may have been a few decent games released, Games on Demand is a joke

  • Velete

    awesome list:P

  • DoggyDaddyX

Very disappointed they are selling a game where the servers are shutdown. It means I’m going to double-check everything I buy.

  • Carg0

wow, lol, there’s a lineup of ‘Suck’ if i ever saw one.

  • Master Mudora

Why do they even have the older games there? Where is 2010?

  • Xlrking

This list is garbage, moving on.

  • VEGEMITE 98

    @CARGO, BEST COMMENT EVER!!

  • Misaki Ki

Yeah, can’t wait for PSU! Won’t comment much on offline mode, but it’s online is great.

Also, on subject, only 2008 and 2009? Needs more 2010!

  • Stephan1237

Major Nelson only gives the info whats on G.O.D . The publishers (Ea,ubisoft) makes the prices.

  • Spitz pass auf

Advertising a Game with Multiplayer on the Marketplace where the Servers are already shutdown is not nice.

  • BossbotPrime

I’m with the majority here. These titles are very overpriced.Plus you really need to update the LOTR:Conquest page to acurately reflect that it no longer supports any live features thanks to EA shutting down the servers. If I bought it from Games on Demand I would be expecting a refund.

  • RuairiAU

    @Stephan1237
Thats all very well and good, but this is Microsofts marketplace, they should be setting a standard. Time and time again overpriced junk is put on there. When Mass Effect came out here in Australia on GoD it was $99AU ($89US).

It’s come to the point now that I just ignore the service.

    @Everyone Else
As for EA shutting down servers, well they shouldn’t be running them in the first place; MS should be. I’ve suggested this to MS, but it has fallen on deaf ears. We already pay MS for the priveledge of using LIVE, it would be great if that service included good quality dedicated servers for us to use. I would pay more for LIVE if they could setup regional datacentres and provide a consistant quality of service for all members on all games. I’m sure anyone who has played Bad Company 2 will agree that EA made a hash of it.
