Xbox 360 Dashboard update is now available

I am happy to announce that the latest dashboard update has now been officially released and is in process of being rolled out across the LIVE service. For many of you, the next time you sign in to Xbox LIVE, you will be prompted to receive the update. A couple of things to keep in mind over the next few hours as the update is deployed:

  • You’ll be prompted to accept the update when you sign into Xbox Live sometime in the next few hours.
  • Regardless of what you have heard, it’s not geographically based. No one area of the world will get it before another.
  • If you keep signing out and then back in again, this will NOT force the update…it will only anger people on your friends list who will keep getting a notification. every. time. you sign. in.
  • Be patient, everyone will eventually receive the update

Here are a few of the features that we are including in this update:

ESPN on Xbox LIVE*

3,500 Sporting Events A Year – Access more than 3,500 live and on-demand global sporting events from ESPN3.com a year, including college basketball, college football and college bowl games, MLB, NBA, international soccer and more.

Out of Market Games – Catch your favorite college team games. Check out the huge catalog of out of market games and enjoy them on the big screen.

The Best Ways to Watch – Enjoy HD programming, DVR controls, plus access to hundreds of clips from ESPN3.com, refreshed daily.

Games at a Glance – Keep up on real-time score information using ESPN.com’s score feed without leaving the game you’re watching. View scores for leagues and games currently in the ESPN.com feed and select “Watch Live” or “Watch Replay” to jump straight into that game.

Predict the Winner – Pick what team you think will win. While watching selected games in college football, college basketball, MLB, and NBA, you will be prompted to vote for your team of choice. You’ll also see the percentage of votes among the Xbox LIVE viewing community.

Voice Chat – Voice chat with up to seven other friends while watching the big game.

My Sports – To customize your ESPN on Xbox LIVE experience, click on the “Events, Highlights and More” slot on the homepage and browse by sport to pick a specific league that you want to follow for the season. The league that you select will now automatically display in your My Sports Channel.

Zune Music*

Zune Pass – Zune Pass is a monthly subscription service that gives you unlimited, on demand streaming of millions of songs at launch from all the major music labels and thousands of independent labels.

Enhanced search – Search the broad library to find your favorite artists, albums, songs and playlists.

Social – Connect with like-minded fans on the Zune online community and get new music recommendations. Zune Social also lets you see friend’s Avatars and listen to their recently played songs or check out their favorite artists.

Smart DJ – Instantly create customized playlists by selecting an artist and have Smart DJ find songs that complement your selection.

Netflix* Search – Experience a streamlined search function making it much easier to find the movies and TV shows you want to watch.

Improved voice chat quality – The audio codec is updated to improve Xbox LIVE Party audio quality. So grab your friends and jump into a multiplayer game or catch a big game with friends via ESPN3.

Improved Gamertag creation – Choosing a new Gamertag? If the Gamertag you’re looking for is already taken, your Avatar will spin a wheel and we will provide five other Gamertag suggestions at a time for you to choose from.

Streamlined in-dashboard virtual keyboard
– We’ve taken the existing QWERTY keyboard in-dash and made it easier to use for scenarios that involve repeated text entry, when signing up for LIVE within the dashboard for example.

Improved Xbox LIVE Marketplace UI and browse experience
– The Game Marketplace has been re-organized to provide streamlined access to the gaming and video content you want, reducing the number of steps to get to a download.

Easier to get on a wireless network
– Trying to connect to a wireless network? Now you can see a list of all the wireless networks within range when you go into network settings.  From there, you can select a new network or further configure the network you’re connected to.

Ability to sign-out other controllers in the sign-in UI
– We’re adding the ability to sign-out profiles on other controllers in the sign-in UI within the Guide. This is especially useful when playing games like Rock Band.

New browse experience for 100% completed games
– You spent a lot of time and effort earning those Achievements, so we’re giving you a new and better way to browse all of them.

Updated Family Settings
– Xbox 360 continues to lead the industry in efforts to create tools that help parents and caregivers choose the right play and viewing settings for their families. We are enhancing the core Family Settings tools for all Xbox LIVE members:

Family Programming
– When turned on, Family Programming disables display of all mature content on the dashboard and can be turned on or off with a protected password for individual members (per account). It also highlights all family-friendly entertainment.

Intelligent Default Settings – Your Xbox automatically customizes privacy and activity settings for each member, based on age (child, teen and adult). These settings can later be individually customized.

Title Exceptions – Allow your family members to play specific games above the console’s designated ESRB/PEGI (etc.) rating as you deem appropriate.

* Xbox LIVE Gold account required to access these features. Not all features available in all Xbox LIVE Regions.

Update: Boot to disc is currently unavailable. See this Support Article for details. This WILL return in a future update.

about 6 million people (Flanders) STILL receive their Zune movies in French….when will this be fixed?

  • kiappariellos

I really hate the new color of the dashboard, its too white. it would be nice if there was an option for different colors

  • Stephan1237

@ReVmAnNL @ all people in Europe.

Xbox doesn’t care about his users in Europe. They say , whats Europe? We pay the same ammount of the US people and what do we get…. Facebook and twitter and thats it… woohooo. Even Playstation has more things .

  • Ruthless Image

after using this for a day i can definitely say this is a HUGE downgrade.

then its laughable how they wait for you to get used to the new dash they released 2 years ago and then change it again.

i know the workers at MS dont give a shit cause theyre too busy worrying about how they want shit set up on the dash instead of whats more convenient and easy for the people who actually pay for it.

forcing me to use this bright white guide is RIDICULOUS.

  • JamieWho

Wow, I love that we have a new updated dashboard, but the white is awful. It really needs to be dimmer, or at least let us choose a custom color for all those boxes. We need a classic xbox option to put everything in a green and black tone instead of this horrible bright white. Bright white boxes does not fit in with the dark room aesthetics of a home theater. It is also not welcome during a late night gaming session when the rest of the room is darkened, and you suddenly have a huge white beam of light appear on your screen and blind you.
At least give us an option to change the color scheme.

  • twisted poke

The audio sounded fine (improved) to me. Everything else is pretty meh as far as features go. (Did not mess around with ESPN as I was having trouble downloading the update) The white is HIDEOUS. Whoever came up with that idea should be fired. True story: While talking to my girlfriend on the phone last night, she asked me if they changed something on the xbox (she was unaware of the new dash) I told her there was an update and the first thing she said was it hurts my eyes and is too bright. You guys definately screwed up on that one.

  • rman0099

Overall I’d have to say a few bugs need to get worked out. In general, loading times on items within the menus and navigation around the 360 seem to have gone up. The new OS seems a bit sluggish to respond. My biggest complaint is just the brightness. It ignores whatever theme you have applied and does its own thing. I have a dark Alan Wake theme applied to my 360 and now I have to stare at these out of place bright tabs. Personally I am not a fan of bright tabs and windows so this is a major turn off. There really should be an option to turn off retina burn tabs.

  • Razoric

Is MS going to provide sunglasses to view this insanely bright dashboard update?

  • Razoric

Also, the way you flip through your friends on the dashboard now (where they zoom in) makes me motion sick (and I never get motion sickness from any game). Please let us toggle that off.

  • xiphumbra

If you’re complaining about the update being “bright”, perhaps you should calibrate your color settings. It’s really not all that bright, IMO.

As for actual problems, the Netflix scrolling bug still exists and Zune Music still skips the first few seconds, unfortunately. :(

  • jchapman

Another Microsoft failure. I cannot fathom how you managed to slow down the guide and dashboard by removing features, but you did it. Look, I hate the color scheme and the reduction in items-per-page as much as anyone, but the worst element of this “update” is the tremendous reduction in guide navigation speed, and there’s no excuse for sacrificing utility for window dressing at this scale.

I remember when I bought a *game* console at zero hour; that was cool and fun. How did it become the pile of garbage currently under my television? I don’t want ESPN. I don’t want Facebook. I don’t want Communicator. Not Zune. Not Last.fm. Not a kids toy. Not a dress-up game. Not a gimmick. I just want to play games with my friends, maybe send a text message or chat request. All Microsoft has done since 2005 is make it more difficult to do what I want, and now they’ve made it slower.

  • Razoric

@xiphump: my tv is calibrated fine. i’ve never had any issues with any movie, game, system, setup until the new Dashboard. I’m not gonna change everything for a MS screwup. Just let us change that color to whatever we want and be done with it.

  • Cardy69

Faster dash even on my 2005 launch console! However the White boxes like on the guide & friends list could have an option to make these a darker green with White letters as it’s very bright! Still issues with the avatar clothing.. Kinect Pre-ordered! :)

  • Cardy69

Faster dash even on my 2005 launch console! However the White boxes like on the guide & friends list could have an option to make these a darker green with White letters as it’s very bright! Still issues with the avatar clothing.. Kinect Pre-ordered! :) where is the BBC iplayer???

  • Ozzzy189

my pioneer krp is ISF calibtrated and the whites look absolutely fine. i think there are too many folks with ‘standard’ or ‘dynamic’ pre sets in use for gaming. change the white balance/colour temp to mid/warm or whatever your tv shows on the menu. it really looks great. i wish folks would stop moaning about kinect as if this is a new kinect ready dash. kinect gets it’s own special dash and this is nowt to do with it. bad move with the arcade games and indie games layout though.
    cheers, oz.

  • Sausage Villan

I’m not going to recalibrate my tv for a freakin menu i like how my tv is set for both gaming and movies and no stupid generic menu is going to make me change i. so how come there are no theme previews still … why is some of my avatar gear now a diffrent thing for instance my bouncer big daddy suit is now my prototype big daddy suit they are both the same and redownloading does not change it

  • aStrangeDisease

Did they fix it already or are my eyes just getting worse already? It looks like the white is now a slightly off-white. A much easier to look at light grey. Thank you, I think?

  • uzivatel

@aStrangeDisease: seems to be the same grey to me
its probably just different TV settings / light conditions (or your eyes are not expecting the old white text on dark background anymore)

  • MACPH1ST0

… or it’s because the searing white boxes are already burning out your retinas. lol

  • Dontasciime

It’s horrid. Give an option to change the colours manually. How much did someone get to design this mess.
Where is the option to choose which codec you want to use for voice chat(some of us do not have very good DSL so now the extra bandwidth requirements will lag eh 2 xbox live accounts running from my house. So now I have no option but to cancel the other xbox live account as it’s unusable now cos of your tech ineptness at designing a reasonable system.

  • ZombieTron

A whole bunch of people, I would say the majority, who were in the dashboard preview, actively complained about the white boxes.

But, I guess as that is the new corporate colours, we are stuck with it!

IMO the dashboard is still overly cluttered and difficult to navigate. I don’t see why the update didn’t just add the Kinect and ESPN stuff without changing things which weren’t broken in the first place.

I can’t remember anybody complaining about the colour scheme before.

  • AnotherSociety

“The searing white boxes are already burning out your retinas. lol” yes Macph1sto you are right I hate this update or more like downdate. The dashboard looks like it went back in time to Commodore 64? I thought xbox live was the way forword I feel it just went back fifteen years this is just cruel on the eyes. Everytime I bring up my friends list or achievement list I have a 42″ White Srceen for a few seconds? This is a mess at least let me change the blinding white to something different? I would even pay for a theme to change the way this looks like the big old xbox blades you could change with your theme…. Who beta tested this and thought it was good??????????????????????????????????? It might look good on a pc monitor im sure thats what it was designed on but its not easy on the eyes on a TV.
    Dissapointed big time……….

  • Shpeshal Ed

Any particular reason my Xbox still has the Beta section?

  • SirPoonga

The colors are horrible. The style is fine, but bad choice of colors. I am squinting while looking through the menus because they are bright. Bring back the blue background.

  • MyJewlzHurt

Does anyone else have trouble with Netflix since the latest update. All I get is the options for Search and Party….Not displaying anything else……still working like perfectly on my PS3 though…..

  • TANK 2old2play

I had high hopes for ESPN but it’s been kind of a letdown throughout the beta. I want to watch on demand pro level sports, not College level sports or obscure things like cricket and soccer. GIve me NFL. MLB, USTA, NBA… that’s what I want out of ESPN. If what’s on there now is all we’re going to get out of it, it’s another pointless add-on to my dashboard like facebook, twitter and MSN chat.

  • Skip Freethrow

This new dashboard update really should have the option to revert to the NXE dashboard. I don’t like being pushed new software updates for hardware (Kinect) I don’t own or intend to own.

  • uzivatel

@MACPH1ST0: the searing white majorneson.com probably did that already

  • Sausage Villan

wow you made the dlc easier to look at by adding CATEGORIES !!! way to innovate yet for some reason you took away the ability to look up my soecific game’s dlc with how having to browse the innovative categories … i liked it before when i could just press Y when i was on my game and go to downloads now it’s just play game or install/delete game

so PLEASE can we have an option to go back to the old dashboard i like it just fine and come on the old adage is if it aint broke don’t fix it; not if it aint broke, break it … i aint never gonna buy a kinect and to be honest with you they way you have been treating us microsoft i aint never buying another xbox when this one breaks or when the next console wave comes i am going to go to sony or to say i am going back to sony

  • JayCee500

Some new features are great! Glad to see some improvements!

Couple of comments below. They already have been brought up but the more we are posting our opinions the more chances Major should read them.. (yes??):

    – Colors are excessively bright on certain HDTV’s. I now try to avoid staying long times on the dashboard or I end up getting a headache. Maybe add a choice background color, or the background changes depending on time of day?

    – I also do have this seemingly new loading time when scrolling around on the Dashboard.. is this by design (I doubt it)?

    – New chat I’m not sure yet. The mic’s voice recognition is better for sure but something keeps bothering me when I play a game. It seems like before the feel of the chat was sounding like the other person was on a earphone.. now I feel like the person is literally talking in person, 1 inch from my ear… which is kinda uncomfortable. We tried moving the mic away but that made it sound like a cheap conference call. Don’t know how this could be improved.. I guess you changed it to account for family games coming out with Kinect (multiple chatting from across the room) ?

  • Arent Argento

    @Sausage Villan
“i liked it before when i could just press Y when i was on my game and go to downloads now it’s just play game or install/delete game”

This is the biggest problem I have with the update. It is annoying that you have to navigate to the marketplace.

  • KEVN38

I like it. Thanks for the dashboard update.

  • NeoVampyre

Okay so today I discovered my major complaint about the new dashboard! In short, after spending the past four years doing everything I can to keep secure my closely guarded gaming secret and key to the safety of my gamertag, Xbox has decided to clearly display it on the My Xbox/Profile page – MY HOTMAIL ADDRESS!!! WHY!!!! Hell I know it and clearly don’t want anyone else to do so, why not go the whole hog and just display my password underneath it as well! I thought Microsoft was security aware and seems to spend a lot of time advising people about security, phlishing and keeping sensitve data safe and then they go and do this?!?

  • Indigo0086

A prettier coat on the same convoluted, unintuitive and uncustomary service that is Xbox live. Still find it funny that “My xbox” isn’t the first thing you see when you sign in, but Spotlight (Microsoft’s Advertisement Red-Light district.

  • QuiCkz AleX

I like it. Thanks for the dashboard update.

  • Lohengriehn

Nice new dashboard. But please lower its brightness. It really blinds people.

And there is a problem with your messenger. The chatname of chatpartners is their email-adress now :-/
Havent figured out how to change that back like it was before the update. The name looks like this way now: a@b.com . Now imagine someone with a longer email-adress….

  • Shawcross

I miss my boot to disc option. Hopefully you guys update it soon

  • NautoAce

Not bad, I like it, it felt that the Xbox Dash Board merge w/ the old NXE, still there still room for improvement, it’s not perfect.

  • X PeCH

    no espn for europe …laaame!
