Podcast By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • Mcmax3000

Sweet. Will download now. Can’t wait to hear the Craig Sullivan interview. I miss when Criterion did their own podcast.

  • P00K

    Ideas for next show:
Where did the Xbox Live Top 10/20 go?
Netflix: Requires gold on 360, free on Wii and PS3. Is MS planning on removing the gold sub requirement?

  • Major Nelson

P00K, The Top LIVE list is coming back. Hopefully next week.

  • P00K

Thanks Major. I’m also interested in MS’s official stance on the Netflix thing. We’ve all heard of the “we won’t charge on 360 what you get for free on other consoles” but is that an actual policy? Or is there some differentiator for Netflix on 360 that MS believes adds value over its counterpart on the Wii/PS3?
Maybe it’s not your place to give the official policy, but it would be interesting if you had on the show the person making these decisions?

  • P00K

PS: I’m glad the top LIVE list is coming back, but where did it go? I have 4 theories, only one of which is of the “conspiracy” variety
    a) Major got busy travelling
    b) Someone else got busy and couldn’t provide the data
    c) The data wasn’t available in whole or in part due to the Kinect launch and dashboard upgrade.
    d) Someone high up said they didn’t want to show MW2 beating Reach. (<– Conspiracy Theory)

  • Tjoeb123

    …You mean Black Ops, right?

  • P00K

    @Tjoeb123: No, I mean MW2.

Since Reach released, we had a single Top Live list it’s launch week. Since then, nothing. If I were an exec at MS and I was watching my newest baby being beaten by a 2 year old MW2, I might call Larry up and put the live list on hold for awhile.

Now that black ops is out, there’s an excuse as it’s the new latest/greatest.

  • chiruno99

What about the god damn inventory blowout? When’s that going to come back?

  • AriesDog

Hey, Major. I like the Kinect 2010 launch achievement.

  • Casserole

    Heil… that’s an interesting name.

  • BJWanlund

Well Stepto, I TOTALLY eat fried green tomatoes with a knife and fork, but the way that the fried green tomatoes I normally eat are cooked are fragile as anything, and so a knife & fork tend to help me eat it easier. Just saying, sorry.

  • Jake Shiney

Audio seems messed up at the beginning, plus its really quiet.

  • Apocalypse1309

Haven’t finished listening, but the audio sounds great on the new mics!

  • Glenn ZA

Just finished grabbing the show. Will only get to listen to it tomorrow since it is already 00h40 here.

Not sure if the team mentioned or discussed the 9 new territories who received Xbox LIVE last week? Will have to listen to find out :D

  • Anonymous

WHERE ARE THEY??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!? THe games promised a month ago!!!! I am slowly turning into a dark, depresing, daisy filled, deep, dandilion abbis. (singsong)”WHERE can they be. These games here, I did not see. Can you help me solve this mystery.”(end singsong) That is the zoboomafoo song. LOL

  • Halwende

Great show, these industry / developer interviews are fascinating Major – good stuff! Audio sounds great

  • sho220

Major, audio sounds good. However, if you want to make it a bit better, encode to a mono MP3. At 64kbps, there isn’t much room for stereo sound. Also, all of your mics are mono. The most stereo thing in your show is the intro and outro music. So, might as well just switch to mono. And in post processing, go ahead and use a vocal compressor filter, that’ll add a bit more depth and loudness to everyone’s voice.

  • Apocalypse1309

“We are an organization of Kirks in a company of Spocks” (or something like that) #EPIC

  • Son of Korah

So… a couple of things to share about Kinect:
    – I have a friend with 10 yr old twin boys, and I’m amazed that Kinect can tell them apart better than I can (which may just mean it has a better memory about who’s wearing what than I do, but still… I am impressed!).
    – These same twin boys have slight speech… problems where they don’t articulate their words very well (sometimes their ‘r’s are more like ‘w’s). Needless to say they are eager to tell Kinect what to do and love the interaction. So, as a result, their articulation and overall speech is improving, just by using Kinect with XBOX360. Great by product of this amazing device.
    – I am finding that my competition on Kinect games is even more fierce, as players get to use their bodies and don’t have to remember specific button assignments, etc. I’m often getting my butt kicked on games like bowling and soccer, and I love the new competition!
    – I have become the resident expert on all things Kinect, and am thinking about offering consulting services via Craig’s list as a ‘Kinect Coach’ to help people learn some of the basics surrounding Kinect and how to get the most out of the experience (ex: small movements work, you don’t need to pull a shoulder while selecting the next page in a menu). =P

    Thank you all for Kinect!
(p.s. – recently watched the trailer for the ‘Michael Jackson Experience’ which featured people dancing holding wii-motes in their hands… and I had an overwhelming sense of obsolescence watching it. “Sure it knows what one of their arms is doing… but how about the REST of their body!?” Kinect is amazing!)

  • THANOS2001

Thanks for the 101 clarifying the lack of a power cable with the Kinect bundle. I’m uncertain why it was such an issue and couldn’t be made clear BEFORE the launch. I asked this question clearly and several times in Oct on this blog.

Here’s an example of why getting that info before making a purchase decision was important to me. The Kinect system bundle knocks $50 off the purchase price of Kinect. That’s a good deal until you factor in the $40 power brick you need to make it compatible with other xbox’s. Penny-Arcade has been talking about taking the unit to a friend’s house who already has a 360. I had to pack the whole system to make such a trip. If I knew this was how M$ was going to pack the bundle, I would have bought the stand alone Kinect and picked up the new holiday bundle 360 with Forza (If it is the Ultimate Collection… more uncertainty) and Alan Wake.

These are the kind of choices I was denied by not getting the proper information before I spent my money. Do you guys get it now?

BTW… I’m having a lot of fun with Kinect. I’m known as the guy who champions new stuff and hate to sound so bitter about this. The family I visited went out and bought Kinect and Dance Central. I felt let down when I opened the box and found my guess was right and I was misled.

  • THANOS2001

You or someone on your staff went back and edited your first response to me on Aug 2nd. They missed your second response where you said everything would be included for no extra cost. They also make me look like an idiot because I did a line for line response to your original post. Now it just looks like I’m mad. LOL!

  • JerryG

Can I say that I’m one of the (many) people who would’ve loved the option to turn on/off the 360 with the Kinect. I totally understand that there is a sustainability reason not to leave components on, but I can honestly say I promise that I won’t be confused by the option to turn off the Xbox 360 with a voice command. I’m just saying…

  • The Gh0sts

will have to check out the microsoft store when i’m in town!

  • Real Xebec

Microsoft, and thus Major Nelson, will not respond as to why the PS3 and WII can do Netflix for free while you have to have a paid subscription to Live in order to do Netflix on the XBox 360.

  • Glenn ZA

Whooo hooo we (South Africa) did get a mention regarding Xbox LIVE in the 9 new countries!
It comes in towards the end at 2:11:53

I was fortunate enough to be asked to participate in the Xbox LIVE day and Kinect launch in Johannesburg and I did the Kinect Video chat with Robin Burrowes out of Cape Town :)

Great show as always and congratulations on the four new mics. Audio was top notch!
