An inside look at how Kinect works

Now that you’ve had the Holiday to play with Kinect, how would you like to know a little bit of how it actually works? There is a great post on the Xbox Engineering Blog that shines a little technical light on the magic and teaches you nerdy terms like ‘multiple centroid proposals’ and ‘HCI.’
After you read it, you may not look at your Kinect the same way again!

I’m holding out on buying one right away, even though the kids want one… the price is gonna drop sometime soon or they will add in some better bundles.

    The Kinect needs better software.

Great read! But I have to agree with Oatmeal25. It could use some tweaks here and there like how about using your voice in conjunction with your gestures to navigate the hub. I mean, voice works surprisingly well, why not hover over something and say “select” instead of just waiting for the hand cursor to fill up.

BTW, can I be on the next beta team :)

I can’t connect to anything on xbox.com or microsoft.com for the past 2 weeks or so. All three browsers give me a redirecting error.

Clearing my cookies did the job.

“But once you get over the magic of opening the disc tray with the wave of a hand like you’re a Jedi”

Urm, this is in the first paragraph or so..you can’t actually do that unless I missed something. In fact you can’t even use voice recognition to open the drive tray when there is a disc in……

Yeah, it’s very clever technology, but it’s just not me. I’ve played Kinect and did’t see the fun of jumping around and moving. I prefer controllers since they offer more control along the lines of standard joy-pad and Playstation Move/Nintendo Wii as well as me being in a small room with virtually no space for movement. Then again I’m interested to see how Flight Control works with Kinect, as in will it detect a clenched hand to direct aircraft and can you move two at the same time with each hand. I hope there’s some demonstrations Larry could do and post on-line. That or if they make a Project Diva/Guitaroo Man.

All the sporty jiggly dancy games are good and all, but what I’d like to see in the future is something like Die By the Sword (by far the best game by Treyarch!) where you would have actual sword physics, actual impact physics, actual maming and actual control.
Or, lets say using the Kinect sensor in games like Battlefield to hunch down while behind cover, quickly peek over and around cover.. the way you’ve always wanted to but couldnt cause of the annoyingly stiff and limited controls of a gamepad.
We’d FINALLY have REAL leaning controls in an FPS just like every kid and noob has done with their bodies since Wolfenstein 3D.

Kinetic is far too fancy a tech device for what its ultimate fate is = shovelware fitness/dancing/minigame Wii-esque crap

Has there been any issues reported with Kinect and the old style 360’s? reason I am asking is mine has Red ringed twice while plugged into the front usb port and both times my controller was stuck in a vibration loop. disconecting the kinect and reseting seems to fix it but a bit concerened it may happen again.

  • Infamous0913

@ Coth 1888, I believe you MUST plug the Kinect into the REAR USB port of your 360. Its NOT supposed to be plugged into either of the front USB ports. At least thats what the instructions that came with my Kinect say.

  • Coth 1888

@ Infamous0913, thanks for that. Reading the instructions would have been a good start. just a pity my router is plugged in there. it hasnt done it since, but I will do as you suggest.

red ring doesnt come from kinect.
when cpu or gpu overheating breaking the silver lot.
that can be by all games.
my second works fine with kinect and i repaird the red ring.
sometimes comes the red ring but not by kinect.
but real is what games coming nexttime for kinect as like an shooter or good fighter.
i think kinect is good for the games are realesd.but other games?shooter?jump and run?
hope i see other games near time.now its wii beather with reemote.

You really expect an answer such as: “Yeah, Kinect is killing of the X360!”

“We do not comment on speculations and/or rumors” will be the answer, or some sort.
