Xbox LIVE and Xbox.com Updates this week

This week, both Xbox LIVE and Xbox.com will receive small updates that I wanted to make you aware of.

Xbox LIVE Dashboard update:

On Wednesday, January 19th we will issue a mandatory dashboard update that (re) enables the ‘Boot to Disc’ option in the Xbox 360 dashboard. After you accept the update, you’ll be able to set the option to boot to the Xbox 360 dashboard OR directly to the game you have in the tray when you power up your console. This option can be found in the System Settings.

Xbox.com update:

Additionally, on Thursday January 20th the Xbox.com team will ship an update that contains a small update to the Gamercards. We’ve updated the Gamercard look and feel a bit and removed gamerzone from the card. Other than that, the same amount of information is on the card. Here is an example:

New Design

Most people may not notice these small changes but I know many of you appreciate knowing the details when we issue updates.

Xbox 360, Xbox.com By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • Mcmax3000

@Jaymoon85 – The 2010 Fall Update broke the feature. This update fixes it. There could also be security fixes but this is fixing a legitimate issue.

  • a1984darkboy

I didn’t know you could power the 360 straight to the game. This will be handy when I come home tired and I just want to play some MP with some friends.

  • PAT2K9

The disc boot option is nice to have again, but the new gamercard design looks horrible.

  • beastman rules

wow, a feature which makes sure you don’t have to press “A” to start your game. “Everyone” needs that. Way to spend your time and money.

Why don’t you guys do something usefull for once and increase the audio and video codec support for xbox users who stream video from their windows media player pc. And if you could optimise this system in any way it would help 2

    Thank you

  • sleepydumbdude

Dang I got excited this morning thinking it was the hulu update.

  • wolfzero01

never knew the Boot to Disc option was gone, since I’ve always had it boot to the Dashboard & I never leave any games in my console anyway, I’m not that impressed with the new look for gamercards they look bland

  • UberToast

New gamercard — bland color scheme, less information, but it’s gotten bigger — how is this an improvement?

  • Rykin Poe

How about adding a useful function back into the Dashboard? Like the ability to rate stuff without digging through the Marketplace?

The new gamer card is nasty looking and changing its size is going to piss off a lot of people who designed stuff around the old size. If I had been behind the redesign I would have tried to make it match the look of Xbox.com a little more. The new version looks like it was designed by someone who just got CSS for Dummies for Christmas.

  • chiruno99

So to understand what’s going on,
    – Today was the update to restore the “Boot to disk” option which could throw you out of an Arcade game and into a Retail game. An option I’m doing fine living with out and couldn’t care less about it’s return, but I do like how you’ve set it off as default. At least I won’t boot up Deathspank, put DMC4 in and realise I’m playing DMC4.
    – Tomorrow they’re going to make gamer cards look ugly and remove the “Zone” category that’s slightly more useful than the broken rep system which means nothing other than you got good rep from 5 people and it’s now stuck at 5 stars, always will be stuck at 5 stars and is meaningless overall.
    – As well as the usual anti-piracy crap they always tweak.
Good work MS, supply to demand!

  • Velete

The filesize of the update is quite a bit bigger than would be expected for just re-enabling a feature :D

It has added AP 2.5 checks to games like black ops/reach :P
Will get round to poking about more later to see what other changes we havent been told about

I’m a bit confused by this update because before, during and after the latest dash redesign I had the option to “Start Disc” in System Settings > Console Settings > Startup and Shutdown.

  • Spargo CXVII

“Boot to disk” didn’t know it was gone!!!!!

  • Wiizpig

The boot to disc option was actually still there, but was bugged. this fixed it.

And good job removing the gamerzone so that all “SUPER HARDCORE MLG 12 YEARS OLD PROS” can’t brag because they feel better than someone else.

  • TANK 2old2play

I have a couple 360’s that are just used as ‘Netflix Tuners’. It would be nice if we could boot to an app now that the 360 is evolving beyond a game console.

  • PAT2K9

Major, could you please ask the Team to fix the “Compare Games” page on xbox.com?

Please have ever game sorted with respect to the other player’s gamertag (like before), and not with respect to our own gamertag. The current system makes it too hard to compare games with our friends when using xbox.com.

  • Arsenic13

Bring back rating games! I don’t want to go to the marketplace to do it. Why remove it from games and in tray?

  • PAT2K9

    “…Please have every game sorted…”

  • CzarKill

Yeah… this update is taking ages for me to install. I am on my 5th try already! My internet speed is fine. I guess I will look for the update on xbox.com to insert through a USB drive.

  • Kivlov

Not a fan of that new gamercard. It seems like every time something gets changed, such as the new dashboard and xbox.com, things get a more simplified look, but in a bad way, it just ends up looking thrown together and no contrast or dividers. Not classy at all.

  • damieng

    @PAT2K: Check xbox.com tomorrow :)
@Misaki Ki: It is already available in an API called XDCP http://www.xbox.com/en-us/community/developer
@RavenousLou: Online status was never part of the default gamercard we are changing tomorrow. I believe sites that display that (like MajorNelson.com) are using XCDP and that information continues to be available to them.

  • MangledRex

No shirt for us unfortunately…I’m surprised you’re still wanting one :s

Hmm so the gamercards are going to be black on xbox.com from now on?

  • ONI5

    No facebook integration?

  • Exu

The gamercards on MyGamerCard are still superior.

  • BryceS

Yeah I think you took the wrong information off the gamercard – It removes the useful ‘Zone’ which gives you a pretty good understanding of the sort of gamer you are looking at from just a single word – but retains the utterly useless ‘Rep’ which, as has been mentioned is currently not working because almost everybody you see online has at least 4 stars.
The tenure would have been a nice thing to add, but if you are only removing stuff, the size and layout should definitely have been redesigned to reduce the W H I T E S P A C E.
I’m afraid that the redesign just doesn’t look very modern or professional. Even the spacing is displeasing to the eye.

  • stststststq

@ROBOSLIDER – As earlier posters have said, the previous update (the Kinect one) broke the boot to disc option. Major Nelson posted about it on here and said it would be fixed in a future update. This is that update.

  • QualityJeverage

Good god, you guys may have broken a record for the most self-entitled whining in a single article’s comment section.

  • Brutal Ringer

Hey Major Nelson- Did the new update remove the ability to add DVDs to my Netflix queue? Or was that always missing?

BTW People sure do bitch a lot on your blog. I like the new gamer card thing.

  • Veive257

In summary: The boot-to-disc option used to work, they broke it with the fall update, and now they’ve fixed it a scant 6 months later. The option remains where it was and has been, but now it will actually work. Stay tuned to find out what was broken by fixing this.

  • r3dreck

Hm, the update was quite big for just a boot disc fix, what else if hidden in there?

  • uzivatel

The update would be much more important if we were stuck the other way around, I guess.

  • Chux

@Wils35 Maybe so, but at least they’re not being stubborn like another company and refusing to put it back.

  • DarkSpartan017

I’m glad their fixing the issue. Although it be nice if my system could process the update so I could get online it keeps failing on my Reach60 which makes me a little upset atm.

@damieng: So does no mention of it in your reply mean that the xbox.com cookies STILL haven’t been fixed yet?

  • Doh Ray Egon

@QualityJeverage: And all you did was add to the whining.

Anyways…I would’ve made it possible for people to customize their gamercards. Like whether rep is on it or not or the color scheme.

  • MeS FEAR

thx larry for the information…i appreciate the fixes…but the gamercard looks way to simple…a little glas effects here and there would make the gamercard more special…the designers don’t know what they are doing…i’m designing stuff by myself and know what i am talking about

  • AnEternalEnigma

When are you guys going to fix viewing friends of friends on Xbox.com? It was totally broken in the last update. Whenever you try to look at a friend’s friend list on the web site, it’s a jumbled, unorganized mess.

Glad to see you guys are finally recognizing how completely useless “GamerZone” is. Now if we can admit that the Rep system is meaningless as well, we’d be on to something.

Oh, and expand the damn friend’s list past 100. It’s been almost a year since you guys killed original Xbox Live.

  • Black Fist

Is anyone having problem downloading the update?
    It keeps giving an error…

  • StuartATrueRed

I noticed a few people don’t like the new card. I’ve gotta say I like it. What is the full address where I can get from?

  • StuartATrueRed

Oh yeah, please bring back the option to turn off auto renewal, I don’t want to have to phone just to turn it off.

  • DarkTear81

Can we actually set a background for our gamercard or will it stay that grey-blackish? It looks dumb somehow with too much space. Maybe you could insert our own Motto (or take the one we enter in the personal info page) instead?

Oh and remove the rep. The whole Rep-System as well as reporting cheaters doesn’t work at all.

  • Gravecat

Useful information vs. completely wasted space and meaningless details: http://gravec.at/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/analysis.jpg

You guys never cease to surprise me.

  • Gravecat

And as a follow-up to my previous comment, the designers at Microsoft could learn something from your very blog here, Major. Compare the previous link to:

  • bullka LT

Well… there’re the new gamercads? It’s already 20th of Jan.

  • tozOL

lol, I knew when I saw all the comments were going to be about either how bad the update was or what we should have, and I wasn’t wrong.

So I will continue the trend, and just to say really, how on earth MS have not given us BASIC options to change the achievement noise/friend log on is totally beyond me.
Even just to be able to have a different sound would mean so much to me.

Only thing I would add why we are all in moan mode…when in gods name are you guys going to make “Games on demand” actually fall inline with the “real” world and not “MS world”, so far overpriced it’s not even funny.

This updates also kills piracy. Pirated copies of XBox360 games are no longer working. I have like 5 friends who have CoD:Black Ops pirated and they can’t play it.

Will Gamercards on the forums still have CUL? Will there be more than one style? (not that I don’t like the example above)

  • H2O Xanadu

Well my 360 decided to red ring after it was done updating.. yay. It works but it wont connect to live anymore… This is my fourth xbox to have red ringed on me and now i’m 3 months out of warranty so I’m forced to eat it. oh but they’ll fix it for 119 dollars.. no thanks. not going to pay 119 dollars a year just to have it keep red ringing like it has done for the past 5 years. no more for me.

  • chiruno99

It’s not so bad when you look at it, with your eyes closed. Seriously, http://www.mygamercard.net/

  • Zacabeb

The new gamercards don’t look good on the forums because the forums don’t look good under the post-NXE design in the first place. They clash.

And I agree on the rep thing. The only ones I know that have a less-than-five star rep after years of playing are people who play online games only sporadically, yet are total sweethearts. As the rep system doesn’t work, it feels useless to even see it (is a 4.8 star person a lesser being than a 5.0 star person?). Tenure is much more relevant.

Zone was never really used by that many people to imply how they play. It needs a facelift, or be replaced with a better developed feature with a similar purpose.

  • SkyyPlum

It does look pretty bland but oh well, as to the people saying people bitch a lot on Majors blog, its pretty much Major’s fault. People ask questions on page one and he never responds unless its about his show or an official statement. If he ever answered the questions presented early on there wouldn’t be 4 and 5 pages of whining and complaining.
