Xbox 360 System Update Preview -Updated

I am happy to announce that we’re doing an Xbox 360 System Update Preview program for our next release, and the opportunity to sign up is now available. We are conducting an open call for US based participants* for a public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format. This is an important update as we continually strive to improve our products and we could not do so without the help of our great Xbox community. As part of the preview program, you will receive a copy of Halo: Reach along with other possible rewards.

Much like we did last year, you’ll need to visit the Microsoft Connect site from this link and sign in with your Windows LIVE ID that is connected to your Xbox LIVE Gamertag.  Once you complete the survey that is presented to you, the Connect site will provide program related updates and you will receive a mail once the selection process is completed.

A couple of points before you head off to register:

  • We’re looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good.

  • This opportunity is open to Xbox LIVE Members in US region only*.To avoid any problems, read the survey carefully and double check all the information you provide.

  • While both Xbox LIVE Gold and Silver members can sign up, priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process.

*Due to disc distribution limitations, this beta it will be limited to residents of the United States only.

I’ll be sure to update this post if the program fills up.

Sign up for the Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program

Update: This preview will not impact voice messages or party chat.

Update: Thank you for your interest in the Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program! Sorry, at this time we are no longer accepting registrations for the program as we have reached our target audience volume. Please be on the lookout for additional opportunities in the future to participate in Xbox LIVE Update Preview programs. For those of you that have successfully completed registration we will be reaching out to you once we have completed the selection process for participation – within the next 2 weeks. You can check on your status my referring to your Connect Dashboard page and the icon in the upper right corner.
If you see Xbox LIVE Update = Pending then you have successfully registered and now you just need to wait for a follow up mail.

Yeah, I filled everything out yesterday, it said I successfully registered, but I have no pending products. A lot of other people seem to be having the same problem. The website is obviously glitchy and I’m sad now because I wanted to participate :(

  • Anonymous

And I know I filled out all the information correctly because I quadruple checked everything.

    • Anonymous

WAIT! I’M STUPID!!! It just wasnt on my dashboard for some reason :/
I just had to click “view connect products currently not accepting feedback.” Thanks Paul Rajcok!

My status says pending but the date is screwy. It says 1/7/2011, is that right?

    • http://twitter.com/ios37 ios37

      That’s what mine says.

      • http://twitter.com/Goodeye Goodeye

Maybe the date they created this, Not that we had access to it, but the date Xbox team started getting things set up on Connect in prep for this?

It’s the only thing I can think of.

    • Anonymous

The date is screwy for a lot of the stuff on the website, no need to worry.

I dont get why the change in media is only happening now… i mean the 1GB DVD partition and only having 6.8G avail was stupid to begin with… it should always have been about 7.9GB available for the games leaving about 50mB for encryption keys and what not…

  • http://profiles.google.com/heartben Ben Nerison

    woo! pending. :-)

  • http://profiles.google.com/sir.sonik Aoiro Ikimono

I signed up last night using Google Chrome as my browser. Didn’t see the immediate update to “Pending” and I assumed that it would just take a bit to update due to high volume. Went on today after it’s been closed to see if I had been let it, but it wasn’t letting me sign in to my Windows Live Network Account. Popped open IE and it let me get in, but then saw I don’t show a pending status. =(

I’m having the same problem. I signed up yesterday with Safari on OS X. It said I completed the registration but it is not showing Pending on my dashboard page. I also do not see it in the directory. I didn’t even see it there when I signed up for it.

Click on the text that says “View Connect products currently not accepting feedback”, it should be there.

Was wondering if anybody else was having this issue, granted it didn’t affect my submission but still.

Whenever I go to log in now on my computer I get this text on the right side of the screen where I assume the login entry should be:

“The Windows Live Network is unavailable from this site for one of the following reasons:
-This site may be experiencing a problem
-The site may not be a member of the Windows Live Network
    You can:
-You can sign in or sign up at other sites on the Windows Live Network, or try again later at this site.”

I can still log in using my girlfriend’s computer but I was just curious if anyone else was having this problem or if it’s just something wrong with my computer in some shape or form.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sir.sonik Aoiro Ikimono

I’m seeing the same thing whenever I try to login with Google Chrome, but not with IE. If you’re trying to login with a different browser, try IE and see if you have the same issue.

      • http://www.facebook.com/branden.ayers William Branden Ayers

That makes a lot of sense thanks :)
I didn’t even think of the possibility of it being my browser xD

Not a fan of that Microsoft Connect website – it’s really finicky with all of the browsers I have installed on my computer.

    • Anonymous

I dont have any issues at all with it im using firefox 4 and i never had any issues with firefox 3 with there site either. Im also on win xp on a single core AMD and still no issues

      • http://twitter.com/Dorwrath Ω Jalil Purtow Ω

never had an issue with it at all in Firefox, opera, google Chrome or IE either.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DustyBallz Dustin Sexton

This is bull! I registered and NOT ANYTHING PENDING. I got an email saying welsome to Microsoft Connect or whatever, but the stupid site shows me as not doing anything, nothing is pending. I use Chrome browser. If Miscrosoft requires IE to register and sign up, then Microsoft has lost yet another customer. Never again will I buy anything Xbox-related, no games, no MS points, nothiung. You at MS screwed me and my chances with your stupid Major Nelson blog post about this. LIST ALL PERTINENT DETAILS like if any certain browser is needed. Ever heard of a Mac and what if I was using Safari?! This is wrong, MS scrtewed me, and I HATE MICROSHAFT!!!!! Burn, Redmond, burn.

    • http://www.facebook.com/stutte Bill Stutte

Really? Over the possibility of a free game? Or have you not checked the directory link at the top right and then the “View Connect products currently not accepting feedback” link on the left side of the page. It should tell you if you are pending or not…. But seriously, your priorities are pretty sad if you fly off the handle after not getting into a beta test.

      • grimm_1324

I think people’s reaction to this is hilarious. “Never again will I buy… blah blah blah”. Its like MN was handing out genitalia growth drugs. Now thats something I can see people getting this mad about. But over a beta that everyone may or may not get, please people stop over reacting

      • http://www.facebook.com/jwhite898 John White

I agree, and if your just now registering your 2days to late. and if you are pending i hope you dont get in, cause your doing this beta test for the wrong reasons

      • Anonymous

thanks your reply helped me to find out I’m pending. :D

    • http://twitter.com/ios37 ios37

      Wow, cryhard little one.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dbarbick Dave Barbick

Chrome worked for me, but that was 2 days ago when it was first announced. Registration closed early yesterday.

    • http://www.facebook.com/DustyBallz Dustin Sexton

There was so much about browser trouble and the site not showing the correct info and all that before I saw this an didn’t want to be left out. What was I supposed to say here, that I registered the first day and am waiting like everyone else to find out if I am accepted or not? Sheesh, that’d be no fun on the internet.

      • http://twitter.com/ios37 ios37

That would have been better then crying, “Ill never buy a Xbox-related product again!”

    • http://www.facebook.com/josh.haas Josh Haas

I can’t tell if you’re joking or what?

    • http://twitter.com/chips99 Brandon

I wouldn’t get all upset. When I applied before for previews in the past it did not show up as Pending and I was still accepted. I applied and got confirmation for this one as well, but don’t show Pending at all on the site as well. I’m confident since I got the successful registration screen that they got my data and if I’m picked great, if I’m not, oh well.

    • http://twitter.com/T9X69 Chris Carlson

I’m on Mac and used Google Chrome when the blog post went live and I completed the registration and it says pending. Maybe your computer/internet just sucks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/rellus.gellor Russell Gorall

You just need a big sloppy hug. I use Chrome on Windows 7, mine says pending. It would be cool to get Reach and maybe that game icon that Major Nelson was sporting saying “Dashboard”. Are you sure you are on the right page? It took me a while to figure out as the Connect site is kind of 1998.

    • http://twitter.com/ios37 ios37

      Same here.

    • Anonymous

That’s the date that the beta program was entered into the system. It has nothing to do when you signed up for it or when it was made public.

This is a public preview, the updates meant for Xbox LIVE have been undergoing inhouse testing for sometime.

  • http://twitter.com/NicoGI NicoGI

I signed up yesterday but it no longer says pending on the website…am I out already? :(

    • http://twitter.com/Gabriel_Summers David Lee

Yes, Mine said Pending but I had to find it in the Directory. Now I don’t even see it at all.

      • http://twitter.com/ralphie81 ralphie81

Click on the “View Connect products currently not accepting feedback” link on the bottom of the left menu and it should be in that list.

  • http://twitter.com/Gabriel_Summers David Lee

Oh. Right. Derp. Forgot to click the “View Connect etc etc” part.

I see that mine’s pending, but I’ve gotten no emails whatsoever regarding it. Does this mean that I won’t get in at all? AFAIK, I filled it out correctly and it seemed to’ve gone through. I use Firefox 4 and have used Firefox on all of my other XBox 360 preview applications or whatever. Or does this mean that they got my app and I’m just waiting to see if I got in?

    • http://twitter.com/T9X69 Chris Carlson

No it means it’s pending. Read the update on the blog post.

“For those of you that have successfully completed registration we will be reaching out to you once we have completed the selection process for participation – within the next 2 weeks.”

It’s going to take awhile before we receive an email. On the site it should change from Pending to Accepted or Not Accepted, once their decision has been made.

      • http://twitter.com/Gabriel_Summers David Lee

I did read the update on the blog post. However, I still wasn’t clear on it. So I figured I would ask for clarification.

What a joke, I read this in google reader and it said multiple thousands of people with a good chance. I didn’t make it in since 2 days later its full. Which I don’t care about that much anyway I did the last one and couldn’t chat with friends for months. But seriously why do I pay you 60 bucks a year. Your deal of the week is a joke, I see no benefit to being a gold member that I can’t get for free on the PS3, in fact i get more from there plus program. I’m coming up on 6 years as a gold member and I don’t know what my 300 some dollars has done to make it a gold experience.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jwhite898 John White

lets see you dont pay 60.00 for guaranteed access for everything xbox related, and just cause you been with live for 6years dont mean nothing as well. this is a first come fist serve beta call. and i dont know if your aware but there is a lot of people who own xbox 360, not just you, So stop your bitching and sign up alittle sooner next time.

Never understood why people always feel the need to say Live isn’t worth it. You are entitled to your opinion, but if you don’t find value in it, stop paying. It’s as if they want everyone else to agree with them. Nobody complained until Sony finally had an online system that could actually be in the conversation, which was a direct result of sitting back & copying Microsoft’s model for the most part.

im guessing that the stockholders or other elites in the commmunity get advance notice of these offers before the customers. for an offer to expire within 24 hours of it being posted, and for it NOT to be posted on Xbox live-Where the ACTUAL customers are-using the product?..something is wrong. either that or they can tell us more facts that havent been listed, how many people was the testing open too?..30,000?…60,000?…we’re in the dark and always will be untill a heirarchy doesnt exist within these communities

    • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

Anyone can follow me on Twitter or read this blog to find out when we do programs like this and sign up.

The purpose of the Preview Program is to allow people who are interested in a preview what we’re working on and for us to get feedback on it. Eventually, when we release the bits as final…then everyone will get them. We don’t WANT all 30-million Xbox LIVE members in the preview program. We want those that are comfortable with the process and technology to participate at this stage of the process.

  • Anonymous

pure BS. us citizen here, tried to click on the offer within 24 hrs..an BAM..its full…how about posting the offer on Xbox Live?..a place where the ACTUAL customers would be. it seems to me that theres advance information about these offers to stockholders or other higher ups in your community. or how about giving us more facts?..was the dam promotion limited to 30,000 people?…60,000?..we’re in the dark…Being a Us citizen doesnt give an xtra advantage it seems, it jus lets us be trampled on even more by corporations an people tryin to limit fun for their own cash gain….thanks Xbox

          • Anonymous

i havent bought any Halo game after seeing the screen tears an inconsistencies in texture loading since the 1st one. if i want to hear aliens that sound like cartoon characters, id force myself to watch some nickelodeon show. im also 40+ so if you’re old enough to be my father, maybe its worth losing a hand to you.

          • Anonymous

Halo:CE came out back in 2002. A lot has changed and if you don’t get in, just buy it. Its a great game. This is meant for people who actually want to test this out. Its not meant for a greedy consumer. I have been testing these dashboards out since before NXE dashboard was out.

          • Anonymous

i didnt see any previous requirement to the program, that an interest to the “wonderous world of Halo” was required. if everyone who takes part in this is a 100% pure halo die-hard fan, then something else is wrong altogether. even tho im not a fan, i still can see the value in a franchise an i know they’re trying. thats good enough for me. regardless of this fact, i would proudly test the game under any terms and conditions without letting personal bias affect any informational followup submissions. so now maybe, ive reached the lightsaber battle on top, with all 10 digits, but greed comes into play. if this was a simple matter of personal greed, i think that there are more effective ways one could exercise an flaunt that hinderance, other than wait for a situation like this to try and profit from. if you’re thinking of nothing but personal gain, why would anyone even care about blogs or posts?..if that were the case id be at a different gamestore everyday trying to greedily gobble up everything i could from slipping on their sidewalk purposely. i think what all the upset people really want here, is not a free game, but a chance. a chance to have a say in a possible outcome or development of a system that we invest heavily into. we invest our time, our money, our reflexes and some might invest even their psyche into an immersive worlds and alternate realities for an experience. if this all comes off as greed, im humbly confused.

This guy under me is such a crybaby i was in the last beta update for the kinect update and they were also accepting a few 1000 ppl and it also filled up within 24hours so the way i see it u snooze u lose

  • Anonymous

another point proven..i didnt even kno there was a beta test for kinect, and im guessing neither did a few other hundred thousand people….im not shedding tears, but thanks for helping with the point..beta tests go on, but not for the avreage consumer..and no, i didnt mean you’re above average either lol

    • http://profiles.google.com/nwskier Richard Osborn

Seriously, man. They have beta tests for a reason, to test things out, not give away prizes to greedy consumers. They want people who are going to ACTIVELY give feedback. I.E. The ones who are online and who actually read perhaps maybe 1 or 2 tech blogs a day. Even Engadget had this one posted in enough time for me to sign up, and once I did I put this blog on my rss feed also.

      • Anonymous

i see your point..even though i dont think expecting a free game now an then is greedy at all. And still it seems the offer couldve been posted on xbox live spotlight for a day, specifically requiring feedback, to give gamers the chance to participate and leave feedback directly on the console via a message or 2. if someone plays games for 16-20 hrs a day, and doesnt net blog, does that make then less reliable to respond on gaming issues or more?…

i dont know.. i rarely blog, i do subscribe to a twitter feed of majornelson and a few other news sites just so i stay current on events. texts are delivered to my phone. when i was notified of the preview, I signed up in minutes. was pretty painless. I’ve signed up for almost all of the beta programs this way. works really well and very effortless.

Wow I was getting upset because I couldn’t find the Directory where “pending” would be located by I see mine is pending. Hopefully I get in.

oh i get it..to find out about the next promotion, i have to NOT play games and follow someone on twitter. is this a joke?..id probably have better luck going to connect and selecting everything with bug or suggestions and hope 1 yields a prize. we’re in the computing age and even the xbox live rewards site(run buy a 3rd party eprize, llc for some reason) states that we can win”cool prizes” from exclusive offers and promotions. they just dont state that you’d need twitter for notification. how about an email?..that seems to be a common format of communication nowdays.

It’s not a promotion. It’s not something intended for the general gamer community, but is instead a limited public beta intended for those willing and intrepid enough to possibly go without their console if things go tits-up.

They want people to go through hoops because they want people who will participate and provide feedback, not install it and not do anything with it. They don’t want to send thousands of discs out to people who just want to sign-up to get something free out of the deal or sell it on eBay or GameStop. They want something for their troubles too.

So yeah, if you want to participate in preview programs follow at least MajorNelson on Twitter. If that’s too much for you to do, then I’m not sure a preview program is necessarily right for you to get involved in.

It’s good to see beta testers being rewarded for the service they are providing. It seems that beta testing programs as of late have been a ruse to get people to pre-order games… A beta tester braves the waters of code untested by the masses and deserves recognition.

you guys should be more thankful that they even give us the chance to beta tests things at all. They could just use there own payed testers and not inculde the open public whatsoever. I for one thank MS for this even if I dont get accepted.

Like Xianda Long, I don’t see pending on mine, although I completed the process pretty early on. Wondering if I did something wrong. :-/
