March NPD’s: Xbox 360 remains the top-selling console of 2011

Xbox 360 was the number one console in the U.S. in March 2011, based on console and software sales, as well as ongoing demand for Kinect, the fastest selling consumer electronics device in 60 days.

March NPD highlights include*:

-Xbox 360 sold 433,000 units in March, maintaining the number one console spot in the U.S.

-Xbox 360 console sales were up 28 percent year over year, the largest growth of any current generation console on the market.

-Total retail spend on Xbox 360 platform (hardware, software and accessories) reached $457 million, still the highest among current generation consoles.

-During the month of March, fourĀ of the top ten console game titles were for Xbox 360 including: Homefront, Dragon Age II, Crysis 2,and Call of Duty: Black Ops.

We expect this momentum to continue throughout 2011. In the coming months, Xbox 360 owners can look forward to the arrival of Kinect-enabled Hulu Plus, as well as a diverse catalog of new games.

Im pretty sure the WII beats 360

    • Anonymous

Based on VGChartz data, no it doesn’t.

In North America, where the NPDs apply, the Xbox 360 has sold more units than any other gaming system, including the Nintendo DS/DSi, for this year.

While the Wii has outsold the Xbox 360 over it’s lifetime, it is over 200,000 below the Xbox 360 in sales this year.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steve-Bluck/100000873832072 Steve Bluck

VGChartz data is worthless. They over-tracked the Wii by over 120,000 units.

NPD data shows that the Wii sold 290,000 units in March. Major has access to the data anyway, which is why he was able to say “Xbox 360 was the number one console in the US in March 2011″.

    • Anonymous

To put the Wii’s sales in perspective, it saw a 92% drop in sales over March of last year.

Yeah to little kids and not thugs

    That’s a 134% increase over March 2010.

Worldwide data would be more useful. But anyway, congrats microsoft!

The thing that eventually got MS over was games. Always had games, but it seems like 360 sells crazy games in the US market. Unfortunately, a lot of those games are Grand Theft Horse and Call of the Gears of Halo. Not to sound whiny, which I do, but I kind of wish MS invested a half billion into making working 360’s years ago instead of on the Kinect launch. That being said, I am loving these deals on Arcade games on Marketplace, and the 360 feels like home to me. A home with a bunch of meth users and alcoholics. I don’t have time to talk about this anymore.

    • http://profiles.google.com/heyyou2843 Robbie S

The Slim is a “working 360″. I haven’t heard any people have RRoD with them.

I just came back in to say thank goodness that, as always, people have tweeted this. All these people getting others info they don’t care about, and from a place that it’s always hard to find info on, called the Internet. Today’s spotlight goes to MentalPowers, after over 600 tweets he has managed to find a few dozen people to follow him. Which is something he tells me he is always working on. That and posting very important things.

It’s amazing what can happen when a company doesn’t sue its users for modifying the hardware they paid for.

    • http://twitter.com/CXK CXK

hahah true. Isnt it “M$” thats the “greedy” one? But Sony, the consumer electronics giant, is suing a user for finding a hole in their system. Can we call them $ony now?

This is only in the US

Worldwide the PS3 is selling more then the Xbox360. This is because the US gets all the services and every other country is not getting any services at all. Go PS3

Remember Folks Major nelson totally tried to trick us he DIDN”T post number 1 selling console in the US!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephan-Tenspel/578534292 Stephan Tenspel

I know, but Microsoft must really do something about the “lost” countries because the PS3 will win this console war (taking over the US)

      • Anonymous

Not sure I understand? Microsoft is responsible for providing sales figures for its consoles. NPD, the group that accumulates the figures have asked those people who purchase their data not to provide the figures to the public.

While it’s within Microsoft’s right to release sales figures for its own products, it’s not at liberty to release sales figures for any other product.

The DS is a gaming system, not a console. So, per your statement he did actually provide the #1 selling console in North America.

        • http://profiles.google.com/samuelgonell samuel gonell

@WilliamRLBaker ouch! You just got served. NPD = US. Education helps.

On another note I live in the US. Why should I care if the US sells great in mmm… Haiti. Obviously the most important region UK and the US needed to attract the developers that make western like game like Mass Effect etc. I am not butt hurt Japanese games which I don’t play don’t get made because not enough xbox are sold in japan.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_R2I237EW5KAFGDUHPHYWPS33G4 Jonathan G

NPD is only for the US, so it would be redundant.

    • http://twitter.com/CXK CXK

Why are you even posting that here? Shouldnt it be noted that the US game market is the biggest in the world as far as sales? I can agree Microsoft has focused their attention on the US, but thats because they are based here. Sony gives all the new/good stuff to Japan first and months later it comes to other countries. Half of the time Sony totally misses the mark for other countries because of how different Japan’s interests are. If anything Microsoft succeeded in their plan, they basically took over Sony in the US on its second try. I honestly dont see PS3 outselling the Xbox 360 in this generation. I’m assuming youre in Europe, until a European developer makes a console you will probably never be totally happy or at the center of attention by a hardware maker. I’ve got a 360 and PS3. I’ve had my 360 since launch, I’ve had my PS3 since late 2007. I have tons of fun with my 360 and have bunches of games, thats also where all my friends and family are (XBL). My PS3 is like a ghost town, I know no one on PSN…one friend of mine has a PS3 but doesnt even know his PSN ID to this day. I’ve rented games and tried demos but never bought a single one. Why? None of the games appeal to me enough to pull me away from the great experience my 360 offers. I feel like a lot of what Sony does is squarely directed at Japanese customers. The games they market to US gamers (Uncharted/Killzone etc) suffer because of how boring and bland their online service feels. The update system is enough to drive me away from the PS3. I rented Killzone 3 from my Blockbuster rental pass, put it in, had a console update that took 25 minutes and the game had to update/install so I just turned it off and returned the game. I think the next generation of the Xbox might be able to push its way into the European market like it did here and possibly nudge Sony into third place. I’m almost certain the next Xbox will beat Sony with ease in the US, and depending on what Nintendo does next it could possibly pass them in sales too.

  • steguinness37

lmao y usa only ? cos ps3 is destorying the 360 in europe at the moment ???

    never mind.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephan-Tenspel/578534292 Stephan Tenspel

PS3 is destroying Xbox360 in all other countries except the US. Playstation has shipped 50 million PS3 and Xbox 360 sold 42.9 million units. You can’t tell me there are 7.1 million PS3 consoles in the warehouses.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=674106424 Devon Edwards

It’s not out of the realm of possibility – but I do agree that PS3 pounds 360 outside of the U.S. Far better choice of services for PS3 in the U.K. than ROFLBOX

        • Anonymous

In the UK, the Xbox 360 sells better than the PS3. If you actually look at where the PS3 outsells the Xbox 360 by significant margins, there are only 2-3 or three countries where that’s the case in Europe. However, in the Middle East, which is included with Europe and Australia, the PS3 outsells the Xbox 360 by a 2:1 ratio.

So, in Europe the PS3 is not pounding the Xbox 360 at all. There are countries where the PS3 is the top seller, countries where the Wii is the top seller, countries where the Xbox 360 is the top seller, and even one country where the DS is the top seller.

Japan is the one country where the PS3 (and previously the Wii) has outsold by a significant margin the Xbox 360.

World-wide, so far this year, the margin between the Xbox 360 and its competition is roughly 100,000 units between it an each of them.

A price cut on the Xbox 360 and Kinect and that gap narrows down significantly.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephan-Tenspel/578534292 Stephan Tenspel

I think its all about the services. Microsoft only thinks about 2 countries : US / UK . All other countries doesn’t exist for Microsoft. Thats why PS3 outsells Xbox360 in countries who doesn’t have any good services. In my country the PS3 sells alot more then Xbox 360.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_R2I237EW5KAFGDUHPHYWPS33G4 Jonathan G

The 360 is starting to follow the same patterns as the original XBOX, its just selling way more overall. As far as third party publishers, it definitely helps that the 360 owns the US market and UK, hence, there don’t have to be 15 different localized versions of games, as is the case with the PS3.

      • Anonymous

In the European Market, in a comparison between Q1 CY2010 and Q1 CY2011, the PS3 saw a 9% drop in sales in that market, where as the Xbox 360 saw a 9% increase in that same market.

So, apparently the PS3 isn’t destroying the Xbox 360 as well as you might think.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steve-Bluck/100000873832072 Steve Bluck

The 360 shipped 50 million several months ago. Steve Ballmer announced it at CES. Looking at numbers sold is pointless though really, as it’s profitability that matters. Sony have lost four and a half billion dollars because of selling the PS3 at a loss and running PSN at a loss, so they’ve lost more than they ever made from selling 100+ million PS2s and all the PS2 games combined.

OF course US has more XBox 360 sold then PS3…Microsoft only focus their promotions and sales on the US…. EUROPE and the other continents dont get sh*t has promotions and sales….
sometimes i really regret buying a XBox… where i am we dont have LastFM, NetFlix, Sales and Promotions DAILY (if they are monthly its a luck) and all sorts of other things!!
Microsoft services and sales everywhere outside the US SUCKS!!!!

    Ps3 hit 50 million on March 29, 2011. Xbox 360 hit 50 million January 6, 2011. Slight lead. :)

Cool cool…now how about taking a fraction of all the money you make from xbox live and consoles sold and games sold, buy some studios, and make some effing games that take advantage of the hardware? The best looking game on the 360 is multiplatform….there is something wrong with that….

Games Microsoft. That’s what gamers want. Not facebook…not twitter….no hulu….Games….it’s almost May and there is still 4 and half months to wait before your first exclusive of the year comes out….
