Cloud Storage and more coming to Xbox LIVE

Following the E3 Briefing earlier today, we also announced the following features coming to Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE Members later this year:

  • The New Dashboard. Simpler. Cleaner. Easier to navigate. With the addition of new entertainment content on Xbox LIVE and our commitment to continuously improving the overall Xbox experience, we’ve updated the dashboard with a new look and feel that makes it even more open, inviting and intuitive to navigate. All of your favorite content is categorized in a way that is easy to browse and find what you’re looking for, plus you can use voice anywhere in the dashboard to effortlessly navigate and get to what you want.
  • Bing on Xbox. We are bringing Bing to Xbox. Bing on Xbox searches Netflix, Hulu Plus, ESPN, as well as our music, video and Xbox LIVE marketplaces to find exactly the entertainment you want to enjoy. With Bing on Xbox and Kinect, you can effortlessly find the games, movies, TV shows, sports and music you want by only using your voice. You say it, Xbox finds it. The experience is now simpler than ever before.
  • Expanded Kinect Voice Support. We want Xbox LIVE members around the globe to experience the magic of Kinect’s voice recognition technology so we are committed to bringing voice to eight additional markets by the end of this year with a total of 13 markets that will have Kinect voice. We are also exploring some innovative new ways to enable the LIVE community to help us accelerate the refinement of voice models in new markets, and look forward to sharing developments on that front soon.
  • Beacons. We want to make it easy for you to connect with friends over your favorite games on Xbox LIVE, so we are introducing Beacons to the service. Beacons are a way to tell your Xbox LIVE and Facebook friends that you want to play a game on Xbox LIVE. By setting a Beacon, you tell Xbox LIVE what you want to play. Then, Xbox LIVE lets you know when friends are playing or want to play the same game. With Beacons, no matter what you’re currently doing on Xbox LIVE your friends know that it’s ok to ask you to play your Beaconed games. Imagine sending out a Beacon to let your friends know you’re interested in playing “Halo,” while watching a movie on Netflix. It’s about making it easier for you to share and discover games and multiplayer opportunities with friends on Xbox LIVE.
  • Cloud Storage for Game Saves and LIVE Profile. Here at Xbox LIVE we listen to your feedback. We are making it easier for you to sign into your Xbox LIVE account from any console at any time to access your game saves and full profile, including items such as Microsoft Points to make purchases, Achievements and friends. Cloud storage will allow you to enjoy the same great Xbox LIVE gaming experience even when you’re not in your own living room by giving you the option to store your “game saves” securely in the Xbox LIVE cloud instead of on a portable memory unit or your console’s hard drive. Gone are the days of “gamertag recovery.” Now all you need to do is sign in, no matter where you are!

What about localization? How does the speech recognization even work for example in nordic languages?

    Major.
Maybe the next dashboard update should include Xbox live network statistics . So gamers would know what hot multiplayer games are been played on the network. Will definitely, save you the trouble on posting on ur blog every month.

Would be cool if Xbox Live auto posted, when you earnt an achievement, to your Facebook page.

and by cool you mean hella annoying… I HATE that feature on the PS3… I don’t need my feed cluttered when someone earns a 5gs Achievement… No thanks.

So… When does the preview program for this one start?

I am so excited and relieved regarding the news of cloud storage for saves.

…I’ve got, geeesh I dunno, 160 or 170 games now?  I just can’t back up all my saves to cards, that’s just not realistic.  I’ve been dreading the day my drive stops working and I lose 300+ hours of Oblivion.

Thannnnnk goodness!!!  Are there no further details yet on when this’ll start up, costs, etc?

Yeah, we need an E3 2011 announced feature FAQ please!

    1. Do I need a gold account to use the cloud storage
    2. What does Gamertag cloud logins mean for downloading and running XBLA titles on other units?
    3. What’s the release date?

  • Kenneth Nichols

Moving things to the cloud is a great idea. Your profile on the cloud. Your saved games on the cloud. Your GAMES on the cloud, too, would be great. If your games are associated with your Live account, then you should be able to play them ANYWHERE (given you have the patience to download them). Of course they would only be playable while you were signed on to that device (with your password), and you can only be signed on to one XBox at a time.

Continuing this trend means moving to a more online and much less disc-based paradigm for gaming. All games that release on disc should release online at the same time. As these new game purchases are tied to my account, I can NEVER loose a game due to breakage or loss of either game media or game hardware. I can even move that content to the next generation machine practically transparently.

Another thing this opens up is game RENTALS via Live. I had Gamefly for a number of years, but recently canceled it because it just isn’t cost effective anymore.

I’d rather pay a flat monthly fee for game rentals as part of my Live account, and then have one or two games that I download as a rental. They would be playable as long as I want them, but I can only get another new game by deleting an old one from my box. No discs, no postage, no driving, no waiting (well, except for the download). I  hope they add this soon. I’ll be the first to sign up.

All of this would be great. I hope this will be the future of xbox gaming.

    • Kenneth Nichols

Sorry, but I thought of another possible feature that goes along these lines, too. Automatic download of older disc content. Let me explain. I have quite a few old regular XBox games that still work. It would be great if when I put some of these in (obviously it couldn’t be ALL the games, but just the most popular titles), I would be offered the chance to download the game directly to my XBox (for a modest fee, $3-10 depending on the title). I would then have that game as part of my account forever, and needn’t worry about the disc ever again. Of course this would only be viable with really old games, say 4+ years, otherwise the abuse of this feature would kill the concept.

I think restricting the Beacons to be visible only to friends is not a good idea. The creator should be able to choose if a Beacon is visible to everyone or only to his or her friends. This would make them much more usable.

Also I was always wondering why we can’t turn off notifications when a friend comes online. It can be really annoying. Please make them go away! :)

All this, and still only a 100 friend limit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/hood.locsta Hood Locsta

major we need more than 100 friends and when you earnt an achievement,it be posted to your Facebook page

    • kyobo7

I like the 100 friends idea, but not the achievement fb page idea. I dont really want a whole bunch of achievements spamming all over my profile. Oh and we should actually get to chat with people on facebook.

When will came this update to the dashboard, and when we can talk in spanish of Spain A.K.A. Castellano (Not mexican) with the Kinect. Thanks for the answer.

  • empire.of.one

If i change my locale to another country, so that i can use Kinect voice commands while on xbox live, am i in breach of the xbox live terms  of use? Can i be reprimanded somehow for not choosing my own locale?

Because the only way for me to use the much advertised voice controls online is to change my locale.

I would be so happy if these guys had done cloud storage earlier! It’s really irritating to think that all my game saves would still be with me if these Xbox people hadn’t been so slow and had introduced this far earlier! Sigh…all of my game saves lost due to the new xbox’s worthless hard drive failing! Microsoft earlier was probably like “Let’s make them buy memory cards which become obsolete and then introduce USB sticks as the replacement”! I hope they don’t charge for cloud storage!

  • http://twitter.com/RantAbulus Abul Hussain

Xbox Live just keeps on getting better and better. Especially the online aspect of it. As an owner of both Xbox and PS3, all I can say is my PS3 has been sitting under my desk ever since I got my 360s.
