ESPN Update coming in August

The team has been busy working on updating the ESPN app on Xbox LIVE and I am happy to let you know that we’ll be shipping the update in late August,

The new features in the update include:

  • My Sports – ESPN on Xbox LIVE now allows you to choose your favorite sports and teams and designate these channels as “My Sports,” so you can jump directly into the games and content you care most about. ESPN on Xbox LIVE will automatically provide you with a personalized daily feed of news and highlights based on “My Sports,” catching you up on only the teams and sports you care most about.

  • Mini Guide – The Mini Guide gives you a preview and quick access to all the sports content you care about right at the bottom of the screen. Saturday is all about college football, and now the best fans don’t have to miss anything. Is another game tied up late in the fourth? Instantly switch to that game. Halftime? Play the earlier highlights.
  • Split Screen – Because true sports fans want to watch more than one game at a time, ESPN on Xbox LIVE is adding Split Screen, allowing you to watch two events at once. Watch live events on both screens or a live event on one while you catch up on news and highlights on the other. You can even control both screens independently, pausing and rewinding each separately so you never miss a second of the action.
  • Voice Control with Kinect  – Focus on your team instead of looking for the remote. Navigate through the Content Guide, skip to the next highlight, or play, pause, and rewind that big play…all with the sound of your voice and the magic of Kinect .
  • Scoreboard – ESPN on Xbox LIVE is also adding a live college football scoreboard that you can jump to any time. You can even use Split Screen to watch the big game on one side of your screen while the live scoreboard occupies the other, keeping you up on all the action from around college football.
  • Reminders – Too many big games to keep track of in your head? Not to worry – ESPN on Xbox LIVE now lets you tag games and set reminders so you never miss a moment.Live Alerts – With new live alerts, ESPN on Xbox LIVE will keep you posted on score changes from around college football, even if you’re not keeping a close eye on the scoreboard.
  • ESPN BottomLine – The addition of the ESPN BottomLine to ESPN on Xbox LIVE keeps you in the know with breaking news and score updates from around the world of sports.

Some screenshots of the new interface:

You must access Xbox LIVE via an ESPN3 participating provider to use this app.

This update looks SICK! I can’t wait, Split screen was sorely needed.

I’m excited about voice control & split screen!

When is time warner going to start working with this feature? Can watch ESPN3 on my pc but not my 360.

Best update yet. Now Xbox just needs to get MLB.TV enabled like on the ps3

How bout getting ESPN and Brighthouse to fix their probs.  I’m on a provider that SHOULD work with ESPN on xbox… I have ESPN3.  But it doesn’t recognize that, and the verify by key feature doesn’t work.

    • http://twitter.com/ToddEvf Thomas James Egan

I feel the same should apply to Time Warner.

On Bright house, if you have digital tv with them, it should work just fine, but if you don’t have digital tv with them, then you DON’T get espn3. even if you have internet with them.

      • http://twitter.com/videojacks vidjack

Have you personally had it work?  Because I have digital tv with Brighthouse and espn3 through my laptop with them, but ESPN3 doesn’t work with the XBox360 program

        • Anonymous

Ah, I understand what you need. Like, how you need to get the verification code, but when you try to get it, it won’t work. I haven’t gotten it to work on my 360, and probably won’t ever, since I have Directv now…

At my college, I did. It was much easier to keep up on sports info since my co-host and i talked about sports on our radio show

  • http://www.semblanceofsanity.com Bryan

Just make it available to everyone regardless of ISP and it’ll be perfect.

  • Anonymous

Of course, you do know that this update will break the ESPN app for everone out there and Microsoft will happily just ignore the problem for two weeks minimum without even acknowledging it. But they probably probably at least won’t release new stuff for it nevertheless, like they did with, ooh… let’s say Kinect Fun Labs?

    • Anonymous

Agreed….Because I read N4G and Joystiq, they usually report on things or apps that goes wrong or when it will be running again on xbox live….but not on Kinect Fun Labs, No one even acknowledges that something is wrong with it. How The Hell Did That Happen? Not even the “Major” himself acknowledged it!

  • Michael Alletto

I asked Time Warner just yesterday when they were going to make it so we could use espn on the xbox through time warner and their response was “no information”.  Geez, its been 8 months I think since this was available and they still can’t get their heads out of their asses???

  • Anonymous

Biggest complaint about this App.  If for some reason the App doesn’t recognize your ISP, it will then give you ONLY content from ESPN’s website.  But when it DOES recognize your ISP you DONT have access to that content.  I’d like to watch some of those shows on my TV… MMA Live for one.  Why are we locked out of that content?

  • http://twitter.com/taternuggets Mike

let me track my fantasy teams and i’ll be thrilled.

    • Richard Mclean

I agree, I would love to see all NFL games on it with fantasy tracking now that would be perfect.

  • http://www.facebook.com/barefootboyz Don Barefoot

Is it ever going to work with Time Warner Cable

    • Anonymous

I have TWC, it works for me. Maybe there are certain parts that don’t?

      • Anonymous

You only get highlights… you don’t get live sporting events (like you should…)

  • http://twitter.com/X420 Michael

Love the split screen feature, a date would be nice though instead of just saying late August.

    • http://twitter.com/GreenMistt kyle

Late August usually means from the 15th – 31st.

  • Anonymous

Wish you could find a schedule? It would be nice to see what is on live, or coming up live before I have to start the xbox and go though launching it.

  • Anonymous

Fix this for Time Warner… announced the feature over a year ago… implemented 10 months ago… still no progress?  WHY BOTHER SAYING IT’S IN THE WORKS?

As you can tell, I’m annoyed.

  • ElektroDragon

Completely uninterested in this.  Will it carry Wimbledon at least?

    why no rogers

  • Anonymous

This looks like a great update, but two things bother me….. Why don’t we get this app and Hulu Plus app on Windows Phone 7? After all they are a part of xbox live and we do get Netflix on the phone, these would be two major plus additions to the phone and more may even sell with these add on’s.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joesiegler Joe Siegler

How about fixing it so Time Warner Cable users can use it?  That’s been “coming soon, keep checking” since the day the thing first showed up on XBL.

  • http://twitter.com/jdrch Judah Richardson

Loving the Florida football screenshot, guys. Go #Gators!!!

  • http://twitter.com/beachman707 Joe Mo

I love ESPN for xbox live. I want a legal and hassle free way to watch my sports games. I will never pay for a standard cable package because I don’t watch much TV (does “standard” cable even have EPSN?). But ESPN 3 needs A LOT MORE NFL games. I would love to see more NHL and NBA games but I was pretty happy with what came through last season. EPSN needs to get these deals because I will continue to torrent the games they don’t air until they do.

  • Steve Runyon

So why doesn’t it work for TWC customers? I have called ESPN, Microsoft, and TWC and everyone blames the other two? I’ve also searched the web for information about this and mysteriously there is very little. Will someone step up and either fix the problem or at the very least admit to who is to blame and if there is an intention to solve it. This is the why I subscribe to XBOX gold.

    • Richard Mclean

Im on TWC and it works for me, Im in the NE.

      • http://live.xbox.com/en-US/MyXbox/Profile?gamerTag=FinderKeeper FinderKeeper

Well, then you’re different from the other 99% of us with Time Warner Cable (and internet) who still *can’t* watch ESPN3 live on our consoles. There was no mention that it was available to TWC internet customers only in the Northeast.

Perhaps you’re pirating it? Who is your internet provider? Or are you confusing watching LIVE sports events with watching the canned highlight clips? There *is* a difference.

I agree. It has never worked for me on TWC also. The most I read was an update 4 months ago saying they were working on it but nothing has changed.

Thank you Baby Jesus!  Time Warner Cable subscribers finally have ESPN3 access on Xbox 360!!  It’s a miracle!

    • Anonymous

It’d sure be nice if that was actually true. *sigh*

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=147900091 Andrew Kajfasz

Well, for whatever reason, my attempt to reply earlier had to be approved and hasn’t shown up, probably because I had a link to another site in it.  So I’ll try again.

There was a site that was online earlier today that allowed Time Warner Cable subscribers to log in via their TWC account, which would then immediately redirect to the ESPN3 Access Code page.  I was able to use the site and got my access code earlier this afternoon at 1:30pm EST.  Plugged it into my 360, and I now have full access on the ESPN app.

Going back to that site, it looks like it might have been taken back down because I can’t get that website to load up like it did earlier today.  But for those of us who were able to get on that site earlier while it was active, and grab our access codes, we were able to get full access to the ESPN app unlocked.  Why that site is suddenly offline again, I don’t know.

When is the update supposed to be released?

  • http://twitter.com/MiGo316 Miguel Gomez

Get your stuff together with Time Warner Cable in SoCal so everyone can watch ESPN, haven’t been able to watch anything since you launched the service, highly disappointed!!

  • Jeff Knulsun

Putting ESPN on Xbox when you can watch it on your TV is a huge worthless gimmick.   Why don’t you spend your energy getting rid of those horrible sounds and dreadful color scheme instead.

    • Phillip Malphrus, Jr.

Not if you don’t want to pay for cable.

    • Tracy Babb

Or when there are 5 great college football games on Saturday afternoon all happening at once and a couple of them don’t get on TV.  That happens a lot with college basketball as well.  Also useful for tennis when I have to go to a class in the middle of a great match and miss the match and can catch it later on replay.  Also great for sports like Australian Rules Football, which is incredibly entertaining to watch, but isn’t on any normal cable package.
Face it Jeff, as long as they can draw more people to the xbox by putting ESPN3 on it they will because it means they make more money.  It’s not like they’re putting all their resources into trying to make ESPN3 better.  If you don’t appreciate sports that’s fine, but there are lots of people who love to have it if they’re going to have an xbox live subscription anyways.

I just called Xbox customer support and got the same runaround: no agreement yet, keep checking back on the ESPN3 page…the one that’s said the same thing to Time Warner/Brighthouse customers) since November: “Check back later, we’re working on it.” Yeah, and Duke Nukem Forever was definitely going to release in 1998,

    Dear Xbox Live:

Either break off negotiations with Time Warner and call it quits in terms of TWC cable & internet customers having access to live ESPN3, or get the deal @#$%^&* done already. Stop keeping a sizable group of your customers in the equivalent of “purgatory” where we don’t know how (or even when) it will be resolved.

I’ve already missed one college football season, and I’m not in the mood to miss another.

  • Zachary Kozlowski

I really want to use this but I have TWC…Seriously I pay for Xbox Live like everyone else I should get the same content. Make a deal with them already

  • http://www.facebook.com/bflythe Brian Flythe

Is the picture quality of the streaming going to get better because right now it kinda sucks!

    • Mark Neilson

Comcast/NBC has the broadcasting rights for the NHL. ESPN does have some Russian and I think Elite league hockey along with NCAA hockey. I wish they would strike a deal with the schools/conferences to host all NCAA games. I’d be set all winter.

Another feature i will not be using i got the 360 for games not sports, i have a tv and cable subscription service for that.

  • http://profiles.google.com/thief000 J.A.J.G. Thiéfaine

Looks very cool! But there are a few things that should change ASAP if you guys want to continue to grow in the additional services area.
    1) Drop the Gold requirement for services that require an additional subscription! You premiered Netflix on consoles and yet you guys are in last place in their console usage statistics. Why? =>Because you have to pay twice to use it on the 360.
Everybody can live with the fact that you want Gold exclusive features, but please let them be things you don’t have to pay an additional fee for!
    2) Bring services like Last.FM (which is available in a lot of countries via the web) to regions other than just North America. I live in the Netherlands and am VERY intereseted in additional services through my XBOX 360. VidZone is something you should consider in Europe if you don’t expand the Zune service to include music like in North America. You sell their videoclips, yet you don’t provide an easy to use interface or app like e.g. the PS3 has.
I hope that the YouTube app you just announced at E3 isn’t just NA only!

    • James Austerberry

Both Last.FM and Zune are in the UK too
