The official word on the glossy Xbox 360

You may have heard last week that Microsoft is changing the outer finish of the Xbox 360 250GB consoles from a glossy black to a matte black finish, similar to the current Xbox 360 4GB model

Some of the news outlets that covered it mentioned having a choice between matte and glossy Xbox 360s this holiday.

I wanted to set the record straight and let everyone know that that is not the case.

We are actively transitioning all our Xbox 360 S consoles to a matte finish.  The consoles will start to arrive in stores over the coming weeks, so if you really love the idea of a glossy console don’t wait much longer.

Of course, we still may offer a gloss finish on Limited Edition consoles like the upcoming Gears of War 3 Console, but if you have your eye on a glossy black console you don’t have much time left.

is there any reason for this?

    • http://twitter.com/therealjinkay david

Yes because they get  dirty way quick and finger print smudges  get all over it….

      • http://twitter.com/chrispgriffin Chris Griffin

Because we all know that we have to touch the Xbox a lot to make it work, right?

        • Anonymous

Not to work no, but initially to get it out of the box, when moving it if necessary and also to clean it, if you’re so inclined, since they don’t exactly repel dust!

    • Logic Squirrel

Yes, there is nothing going on for the 360 right now so they have to put something out lol.

Good riddance. Gloss scratches easily, finger prints and dust show up. The reflections are annoying.

Wow Microsoft just keeps copying Sony…..

Sony releases PS3 Slim, Microsoft releases 360 slim
Sony releases Playstation Eye, Microsoft releases Kinect.
Sony switches to non-glossy PS3, Microsoft switches to non-glossy Xbox 360.

    See the trend?

    • http://twitter.com/Steinlord Andrew

your retarded, Kinect was announced well before the eye even came out look up natal….and sony copied the wii you retard. They switched for the same reason sony did.

      • http://twitter.com/windsmere Lloyd Wright

Haha The Eye Toy came out mid-way through the PS2’s life time. Then the PS Eye was released the following year of the PS3 being released (about 6 or 7 months). But judging by how articulate you are i.e. calling everyone ‘retard’ you probably aren’t very bright.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=674106424 Devon Edwards

PS eye was out long before Natal…you’re thinking of ‘Move’

    • Rob adams

Sony releases PS3 Slim – And it still sucks
Sony releases PS eye, Microsoft improve on the vision cam and release a ground breaking experience.

Sony switches to non-glossy PS3 – Sales are still falling

See the trends I think not. I don’t think you can compare the eye to the kinect camera.  One is a toy and the other is a revolution!!!

    • Nathan Cooper

Perhaps, but all for the better in my opinion; except about Kinect, which I don’t own to speak about.

Who cares about the outside?  I want a bigger hard drive.  Give me a 320GB or 500GB sized hard drive.  I prefer function over form.  Besides the box already looks nice enough.

  • http://twitter.com/whenjasonattks Jason

    matte finish is way better.

  • Angelique Karamanoli

Larry thanks for the info. Will the new matte Xbox 360 S consoles include Transforming D-pad standard?

  • CyberSkull

What I would like to know is when a regular 320GB console will go on sale.

    • http://live.xbox.com/en-US/MyXbox/Profile?gamerTag=FinderKeeper FinderKeeper

Most likely after the New Year, since they wouldn’t want to cut into the sales of the limited editions (Gears console next month, Star Wars console in December).

So figure sometime between January 2012 and Armageddon. ;-)

I have to say, GOOD RIDDANCE. I simply abhor glossy plastics, and I can’t, for the life of me understand how anyone ever thought that this was a good esthetic choice for consumer electronics. Those damn things scratch so easily even if you just wipe them with a dry cloth, it’s insane. And every single speck of dust is visible from space. I can’t wait for this stupid trend in consumer electronics to end once and for all. I actually chose to buy Halo Reach slim over a regular 250gb elite, just to avoid that horrible glossy surface, even though I don’t like silver as much as black. Now I might have to buy another Elite, damn it Microsoft!

I got the 4 GB just because it was matte. It’s so much nicer than the glossy one!

  • http://twitter.com/JakConstantine dave H

Awesome. When are they coming to the UK? I may get one.

  • Jonathan Cook

I guess glossy consoles are cheaper to produce? I never really understood why they don’t just make matte one to start with.

    • Nathan Cooper

Agreed, the glossy finish cheapens the appearance of the device, never mind the many smudges and fingerprints it collects.

How long have we had “black” 360’s?  They “were” matte finish to begin with, then the stupid 360 S (with hard drive) is glossy?!  Now, after all these years, MS is coming out with a “black” 360/TV universal remote… but the images I saw were with a GLOSSY finish!  I “hope” they will actually release it with a matte finish, NOT glossy… like the consoles they decided they don’t want to make anymore!

  • Anonymous

Is the matte finish the same or in fact “similar” to the Xbox 360 4GB model?

  • Anonymous

Does this mean Kinect Fun Labs will work after being down for three weeks?

  • Anonymous

so will the Kinect be made non glossy to match then

    • Anonymous

On the 2nd to last page (right now) of the general comments MN mentioned himself that the Kinect will stay glossy.  I would assume that the new Xbox remote will also remain glossy.  It is strange that they would not match the consoles, but oddly they are planning to release the console in one particular style and the rest in a different style.  I guess because the Kinect, like other competitor’s casual add-ons, are more of a supplemental income for the corporations rather than a focal point.

Does this mean there will be a price cut?  Really, glossy or matte doesn’t matter on sales, it is the price of the system.  I read that there was a new integrated chip being introduced into the Xbox that will make it cheaper to produce, will it be in the matte Xbox?  Can we expect a price drop?

Hala Fellow Gamers!  I want to record my gaming sessions my my console to my PC in HD.  Any suggestions on a device which can do this ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/RobKwong Robert Kwong

Will Microsoft eventually offer a “Elite” version of the Xbox 360 S??

  • http://www.facebook.com/RobKwong Robert Kwong

dazzle HD, and hauppague are both things you can use to do that

  • Nathan Cooper

While I really like my glossy Xbox 360, I prefer a matte finish. On the subject of changes, please considering doing something about the eyesore that is the eject button; it’s not aligned with the disc tray edge, squeezed in between the tray and the top of the console. It draws too much attention to itself for these reasons, neither of which are aesthetics of good design. I would have preferred a touch-sensitive tray to open it, serving the same functionality and making the design more appealing. Thanks.

Does this mean the 250GB version will have the 4 GB flash built into it too?  That really helps load times on things and it’s a nice bonus instead of having to plug in a stick of flash memory.  Heck make it 10 GB and allow any one installed disk based game to load off of flash.  That’d be great and make the system really “elite”.  Ideally of course you’d release a “caddy” to plug in any hard disk I want since it now uses the same connector anyway.  Your 250GB is ridiculously expensive at this point, considering I can get a 500GB laptop hard disk for half the price.  Heck if you’d let me format any drive I want for use in that slot with a caddy, I could even buy a SSD to get the flash speeds on top of storage (though that would be very expensive itself).

As for appearance, I could go with glossy or matte, though matte is easier to clean.  I’m still waiting for a white version to be released to keep the “original” look going, but either way the system looks nice.

That’s an odd move. While matte is better for hiding dust and fingerprints it also makes things look cheap. PS3 went from looking like a high end sandwich toaster to looking like a bargain basement lunchbox for small children.

I already have a shiny S, but if it breaks I’ll be most displeased to have to buy an ugly matte replacement.

    • Anonymous

Or… you can buy the extended warranty and JUST GET IT REPAIRED!

Don’t think of the “matte” finish as “flat black.”  It is more like semi-gloss.  There IS some degree of reflectivity to it.  I’m looking at my console “right now” and there is light reflecting off of the faceplate!

I’m forever wiping-down or polishing ANYTHING in my entertainment center that has a glossy surface (display windows on my A/V receiver, my cable box, or the front of my Blu-Ray player – which is NOT “ahem” an add-on for the 360).  I haven’t dusted-off my 360 in maybe a week.  Just think how much more light the “matte finish” will reflect light when I wipe it down (which I’ll do after I post this)!

    Stick-it, glossy Xbox 360!!!

I like the look of the glossy X360, but it is a dust magnet and a pain to clean. So I guess matte black finish is just for the better…

What about the Kinect? Since I am slowly beginning to get the appeal of it and more ‘core’ games start to use certain aspects, which *could* genuinely enhance the game, I may get one. Of course since I own a glossy 360 there is no issue but if I were to get another, the glossy Kinect will not match the matte 360 any longer…
