Gears of War 3 sells more than three million copies in first week sales

Following more than 22,000 midnight madness launch events, Microsoft and Epic Games today announced that the Xbox 360 exclusive sold more than three million copies in its first week since release, cementing Gears 3 as the biggest game of 2011 and catapulting the franchise beyond one billion dollars in lifetime sales.

In just one week, Gears 3 has already grossed more than any 2011 video game to date.

      Halo broke 1 million sales in the US in a month. not sure about worldwide, but I wouldn’t expect it to add too much.

      Gears of War 2 sold 2 million in it’s first week, and breaking the 3 million unit mark by the end of it’s first month.

      MW2 sold 4.7 million units it’s it’s first 24 hours on the shelf.

      Black Ops sold 5.6 millions nits in it’s first 24 hours on the shelf.

    Great start for Gears 3.

    Apparently, the only game that will outsell Gears 3 this year is Modern Warfare 3.

      With more than 50 unlockable characters in game and another 30 weapon skins, Epic has given us more than enough unlockables. Do you use the original gunmetal weapon skins when playing, or ones that you’ve unlocked? I for one do not mind paying a little to customize an excellent game that I’m going to be playing for the next year.

        Yup that’s pretty much it. With 3-5 million people playing between now and the holiday, there will be a percentage of them wanting to distinguish their characters just a little bit.

      So don’t buy ‘em. Microtransactions are the name of the game nowadays, because they’re successful.

      Be happy that these are only cosmetic skins and do not allow you to pay for an advantage in-game.

        I remember back in the good days before Microsoft super greed gaming, when micro transactions were just simply in game unlockables, already in the cartridge. *sigh*

    It’s an amazing game and hasn’t left my Xbox tray since the midnight release. So much content in this game for the price. I’m hoping that this game finally dethroned Call of Duty at the top of the XBox Live activity for the week, simply because something needs to.
