Neato, looks like you guys secured some pretty cool stuff.  These stations also have a gamer vibe to them.

will this be like ESPN where you have to have Comcast or a certain ISP in order to qualify?

    And Ireland?

  • http://twitter.com/ToneSibley Tony Sibley

Nice one!!  Now all I need is full 3D support!

  • Jordan Aschwege

Will this work similarly to how the ESPN Channel works now? Or will I still need a cable hook-up/account?

  • http://twitter.com/VulakAerr Vulak’Aerr

ITV not playing ball then? :(

  • http://twitter.com/tsrblke tsrblke

I hardly consider AT&T actually available on Xbox.  Unlike Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, etc. They want an additional $99 (+$55 since I’m already a Uverse Customer) to make it work, which I never understood.  And the kit has been on “Backorder” for as long as I can remember (not that it matters much, since it requires the main DVR, and I only have 1 TV it’s be redundant.)
Hopefully the new Dashboard update wil eliminate this and just make it work (like ESPN does).

  • Edwin Dei

Any reason to believe that as a Time Warner cable user, I’ll actually have access to any of this?

  • http://twitter.com/benwallis Ben Wallis

There is no asterisk (*) next to BBC (UK)…

Does that mean we can finally access the BBC iPlayer WITHOUT needing a XBL Gold subscription?

And I hope HD channels are avaialable/supported too.

  • Kevin Alexander

What does this mean? Will we be able to ditch our set top boxes?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joesiegler Joe Siegler

Will these things require to already subscribe to the cable channels through a provider like ESPN does now?  If so, this will be useless.  I’d want this NOT to have to pay Cable TV anymore.

  • http://www.facebook.com/butlerb92 Brandon Butler

I know.  This is one of the many reasons why i hate Time Warner Cable.  They don’t branch out to other parts of entertainment.

My thoughts exactly, but for people like me who are on Verizon FiOS, I have yet to see the advantage. I mean, if they partner with these people, you still need their service to be able to access it on the 360, right? So I’ll still need a TV package from FiOS and a STB, right? I’m excited about this as its the first step to what I’ve wanted in IPTV, but if I can’t ditch the STB, what’s the point?

nice long list, but I don’t care until you tell me what the catch is.  why is comcast/verizon willing to come to xbox?

  • http://twitter.com/lochdoun Bry

No. ESPN only requires that you subscribe to cable INTERNET, not television. If you have have cable internet and not DSL then you should be fine.

  • http://twitter.com/Jaystaffo Jay Stafford

ITV for UK isn’t there as they are starting to charge to use ITV Player. That won’t go well. iPlayer is great though :)

  • http://twitter.com/Seansjohnson Sean Johnson

Guys its important to remember that it will most likely mean you have already subscribed to the services.

Just like HBO Go if you subscribe its free.  If you don’t its not…

  • http://twitter.com/tiagalho Tiago Alho

That services was available for vodafone tv in portugal back in 2009. it isn’t currently available anymore. or I may be mistaken :( . care to clarify?

    No G4 TV???!!!
Wouldn’t that be the most obvious choice for a GAME console?

  • http://twitter.com/SokolRETX Cpt Malashenko

Its will be great if Zune comes to Eastern Europe too

  • https://twitter.com/#!/BeeDizz BeeDizz

I fail to understand the hype over all this. If you subscribe to any of these services, you get it on your TV anyway right? What’s the catch? You watch it through your xbox rather than through a cable box? I don’t get it.

  • http://twitter.com/mcmax3000 David

It would’ve been four or five years ago when G4 was still gaming focused. Outside of X-Play & events like E3, they hardly have any gaming content anymore.

I have cablevision which of course is not listed here. so i bet i will not have access to very many of these services. HBO GO normally requires access to certain ISPs, like ESPN3. SO i can’t get that either.

  • Kevin Alexander

I ask the question because this post gives no detail on HOW it will be delivered to the 360.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=507910910 Ryan Braun

    when is the beta?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=533945604 Tim Harris

    With, or without caption support?

  • http://twitter.com/mcmax3000 David

I’m not in the US so I could be wrong but I was under the impression that HBO Go depended on your cable provider & not your ISP. It’s whether or not HBO has an agreement with your cable provider to where they can verify you as an HBO subscriber to provide you with access.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Hector-Pena/100000144198951 Hector Pena

I don’t know, the best way I can say how this thing will work is as follows:

If you have comcast INTERNET or Verizon Fios Internet, from those two cable provider, you will be able to watch syfy,Bravo, and EPIX on the 360. You don’t need to be a comcast cable subscriber to watch it. Just like another person said it on here. I have Direct tv, but I have comcast internet, I can still watch ESPN games live and everything else. So it will be great if that is how it is going to work. Maybe the Comcast and Verizon that is listed means just that. You need to have internet from one of those 2 providers to enjoy it on tv.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=637111459 Joe Tipaldo

your correct, cable provider. in my case, they are also my ISP. either way, cablevision is not a supporter of HBO GO.

  • http://www.facebook.com/morsleyg Grant Morsley

Hope the ABC iView client is better than the PS3′s “I have a Web browser with Flash” client.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Guild/653259877 David Guild

So whats happened to Zune for uk?

  • http://twitter.com/tsrblke tsrblke

I’ve read a fair amount about this and seen mixed results with people who tried this.  Some said they got as far as installing it, but AT&T “required” sending out a service tech to actually activate it. (Ding, $99).
It’s a mixed bag, and AT&T customer care seems to vary depending on what person you get on the other line.
Nevertheless, this doesn’t change my second point which is “AT&T still requires a STB.”  So what’s the point for someone with only 1 TV?  If this update actually INTEGRATES things into the dash (unlike the current model) then we’ll be seeing benefit finally.

Got nothing new on my country again :(
that’s not fair we all pay the same gold subscription fee every year….

  • Anonymous

You get the same features for paying the same price, users who get these TV services will be paying an additional fee.

  • Anonymous

    Major,

Please explain HOW this will work. This particular feature is one I’ve been waiting for, and the press release is very confusing. Will I need to already be a cable television subscriber, or is this going to be an ala carte service, to which I can subscribe to individual channels directly through Xbox Live?

We REALLY need these types of details, in PLAIN ENGLISH please!

Also, is there restrictions to who my ISP is? I, like many, am a TIme Warner subscriber, and we’ve been ignored completely, and STILL don’t have ESPN3 working.

  • Anonymous

For Comcast, an HD receiver is $15 a month. We only have one in our household, although we have 3 HDTVs.  Two are connected by their “free” SD, non-menu, box.  This would allow us to watch HDTV on the TV that is normally connected to the XBOX.

The Dashboard is coming this holiday right??

  • http://www.facebook.com/Degauss Paul Slawinski

BeeDizz, the great part about this is that you don’t have to rent a settop box from your cable company for additional TVs, I have had AT&T Uverse on my 360 for 6 months set up in another room that used to have a cable box I paid about 5 bucks for a month. Small savings but in the long run It’s an extra video game every year if you think about it. Also, maybe if we can stop having proprietary DVR boxes (you NEED to have one to have uVerse installed on your xbox) we can start having our own hard drives used for DVR content. But that is a whole ‘nother can of worms that I will leave alone for now.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J7DWKF5AFBSTUQSFEWJX6WX5OY Clu

the point is you can now stream to any room in your house without having to purchase/rent extra cable boxes. #clu

Hulu has an extra fee already and I can assure you you will not be getting HBO or Comcast’s programming unless you already pay them to subscribe to their services. Expect these to all cost varying amounts or require you to have subscriptions with the various partners.

too bad those of us that use TWC to access Live won’t be able to use this

  • http://androiddelight.com/ Audio

It’s on demand.  You can watch any show on HBO GO whenever you want, not just when it plays on TV – shows past, present, no longer running, etc.

In ESPN’s case you can watch games that are not being played in your market and games that are on ESPN 3.  The interactivity of ESPN on Xbox is pretty amazing (game scores, ability to watch multiple games).  It’s an improvement over standard TV IMHO.  Plus you’re not paying extra for it if you already have a cable subscription.

    Interesting….

We’ve had Murdoch’s Sky TV on the Xbox in the UK for ages but due to the usual conflict of interests (Murdoch wants people to buy expensive satellite TV subs) the content he provides to the 360 is pretty pathetic. It’s also all in incredibly low resolution and over compressed SD. Looks ghastly and totally unwatchable on anything other than a 10″ black and white TV from the 1960s. (at best)

  • http://twitter.com/Navarin Bennijin Turbo

Since we don’t get BBC iPlayer or streaming live BBC TV online in Ireland, I think we can forget about that. 4oD should be here though. If not, then someone screwed up big time.

I’d ask for RTÉ Player, but Irish TV sucks…

  • Anonymous

So what’s the deal with Time Warner Cable and Microsoft anyway? First we TWC customers get screwed out of the ESPN streaming content on XBL, and now TWC is noticeably absent from this provider list too. Somebody needs to get their @!&# together, play nice and work out a contract already!

  • http://profiles.google.com/jedimasta Christopher Kirkman

Can someone clear something up for me? According to the above (and the original press release) those providers with asterisks next to them have a foot note stating “* Xbox LIVE Gold membership and/or other subscriptions/fees required.”

HBO GO does not have said asterisk. Does that mean HBO GO is free? Watching on any other device requires an authentication code given to HBO subscribers only. I had to give up my Boardwalk Empire recently and I’d like it back.

  • http://twitter.com/Mario__g Mario Giulietti

most likely you’ll need an account like on a phone, or the hbogo website now. everyone is money hungry.

also comcast, my tv provider doesnt has the * and everything offered online or on a phone app needs an account email or i believe you wont need gold, just an account with that provider

On a day that Steve Jobs died, it is important for MS to focus on money. Cheers.

I have made light of the fact that he makes about three posts a month on his own blog. Usually about something he was going to re-post about anyway. He is just a tool of MS, cheers.

Jobs loved money, sorta fitting. You make it sound like Microsoft ran over there and killed him themselves. I never liked the guy but it’s also to bad he died. The rest of the world still exists though and has things going on. You want to worship Jobs then go start a church in his honor instead of trolling random console system announcements like anyone involved had anything to do with it.

They stopped production of the Zune hardware, but are continuing the Zune services – just focusing on Windows Phone, Xbox, and PC as the players.

No.  If you have Xbox live, and one of these services, you can eliminate the cable box for that TV, saving you $.  The Xbox becomes the converter box

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3MUOO3JQKGIF4NCMRWPCGDYHAM Mike

There is a miss conception on this – Xbox replace the converter box.  if you have Live gold, and one of these subscriptions, you can eliminate the fee on your converter box.

This would be awesome if Xbox Live included subscriptions to these services, but you gotta pay just to even have a chance to use these on-demand services..  Like why cant my Xbox Live subscription include a subscription to Netflix, Hulu, etc?  We get charged for Live, then we still have to pay a separate subscription fee for Netflix..  Thats pretty lame.

  • aStrangeDisease

Some good news for Canadians. Disney, Crackle, RODO,  YouTube and more. Not sure why people are complaining. We also just got Zune Music here finally. Add all this to Netflix and Zune marketplace and we get a lot of good content.

  • aStrangeDisease

It’s not very expensive. Netflix is $8/month and Xbox Live is only like $5/month. Cable TV is $50-$100/month or more. So is internet. And electricity. Etc.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506431441 Jason Scarpelli

5 dollars a month for Xbox Live??? LMFAO Don’t think so.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253773051 Sam Ram

Nope, he’s right. $60/yr. for Live Gold, which breaks down to $5/mo. And that’s not including the killer renewal discounts Microsoft offers (my year was $39.99 this time around, and who knows what it’ll be by the time I need to renew again).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253773051 Sam Ram

More than likely, Kinect will continue to give enhanced features rather than transition to a necessary piece of equipment. So it probably won’t affect you by not having a Kinect around.

I think you should look at what UK providers include Ireland in their license as it seems you have completely neglected to mention us once again.

  • Anonymous

If I have a Ceton card and a MCE set up using my XBox 360, I say bake this into the new dashboard update as well.  Get rid of the MCE interface but instead of accessing my TV, videos, music and pictures using the MCE interface I should just pick the appropriate menu on the new dashboard.  This allows MCE to be baked in as opposed to a seperate interface.  As an MCE user I now get access to all the apps available, get to use NetFlix, etc all using the same interface.

What is the point of having HBO GO as a separate channel if you can’t subscribe JUST to it. If you want to see HBO you need to get a full channel package through a TV provider such as Verizon. Does anybody know if you will be able to subscribe only to HBO GO through XBOX live? That would be amazing…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Garcia/1360847381 David Garcia

I’d imagine that if no one else does it (iPad Apps, computer software) then Xbox will not.  Makes you wonder if it will happen in the future though considering how much HBO is diversifying it’s ability to be viewed..

Do other things compare to the Xbox’s ability to display things on your TV, with full Surround Sound and in HD?  Sure, SOME computer setups would.  How about networking with your friends, they can see what you are watching (if you want) and even watch it with you with synced video and voice chat?  It’s a small market, but better than getting on the phone and saying “Ok, hit play….NOW!”

The best thing about these optional services are that they are OPTIONAL and available if you decide that you need them.  No one is forcing you to watch it on your Xbox.  If the update does not apply to you, then you can freely ignore it while enjoying the other benefits the update will bring like Beacons, Bing Search and a new UI that’s easier to navigate.

I think its a good idea that Microsoft is finally getting Youtube on the XBOX 360. I hope that this project will pull through because a lot of people have high expectations for this update. This also sounds like it will be released soon, but hopefully there won’t be any problems.

  • Zack Barton

To me, it is a great idea to get all of these fantastic features on the XBOX 360. There are many varieties of shows coming onto the XBOX 360 from Bravo to Syfy. Many people and a lot of my friends are talking about this new update and saying that it is going to be the best thing that XBOX 360 has ever had. This new television version should launch soon and hopefully it will be up to everybody’s expectations.

Nothing for South Africans… wow… and yet we pay the same for mmmmuuuccchhh less. Bloody hell, it’s like there’s this general disregard for Africa. Are they honestly going to tell me that not one of the entertainment providers in South Africa could provide content? Multichoice, SABC, eTV.. etc.

    Depressing…

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

They should actually scale the subscription cost to content available to your region, because having to pay the same as the Americans, yet get not even a fraction of what they do is ridiculous. We don’t even have Zune so effectively we’re paying $60 for multiplayer, twitter and  facebook (oh and the occasional demo that makes it’s way to us).
