Xbox 360 System Update coming this Tuesday (no new features)

Sometime during the early morning hours tomorrow (Pacific Time, Tuesday, October 11th) we are pushing out a mandatory system update. If you are signed into LIVE already, you may be signed out. Once the update has been completed, you’ll be able to sign-in again and back online in a few moments.

This is a general system maintenance update and there are no new features that will show up once your system has been updated.

Another batch of banned consoles in 3…2….1..

    • http://www.facebook.com/WannabeActor16 Paul Steven Briffett

Why are they being banned? Are you referring to the time when random Xbox Live users were being banned for no reason due to a bug?

Downloaded the firmware update an hr ago..my slim (250gb) is now acting a bit funny..never ever had an issue prior other than glitchy pauses now and then on all random games i’ve installed from disc into my hd..
today, after the update, i tried to watch the latest ‘sent u a message’ video in the marketplace..it freezes exactly in the same spot midway through the episode..i tried replaying several times as well as fast forwarding to the exact spot..no luck.

tried to play a single player game of dead island off of my latest save which has been working smoothly since prior to this update..NOW, it freezes at the exact same spot in the load screen at the beginning of the chapter.

i have to force shut down everything..i’ve tried this several times, including deleting installed game and re-installing, no luck, does the same freeze in the same spot thus forcing me to reboot the whole console..

This is not cool Xbox and scares me..does this mean the firmware update can be harmful to my system?

I’m clueless and sure hope you patch this up asap :- I

  • http://twitter.com/Syphon_NL Nick

Thank you for destroying me 360 with this update. No Gears of War 3 for me. Recieved red rings of death immediately after downloading.

    • Vocal ARR

give this a try this is what helped me get my console too boot normally again
Clear Any Failed system updates that cause the console to error.

With the console off, press and hold the sync up button (the small white one)

While holding the sync button press the power button to turn on the console

Continue to hold the sync button until the Console has booted up completely.

During the boot process the console should clear any failed updates, allowing you to use it normally.

      • http://twitter.com/Syphon_NL Nick

Unfortunately this doesn’t work for me.

  • ElektroDragon

No new features.  Sounds like a PS3 firmware update.

    I would love to see a changelog…

The Xbox is upgrading for The Big upgrade ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/scorpio892007 Jackie Earley

Hey Larry, maybe you should consider talking to the Xbox Team about publishing the changelogs for each update so the consumer knows what the company is doing to their devices. I understand we do not have to update if we don’t want to (even though necessary for Xbox Live), a lot of us would feel more comfortable knowing what you guys are doing to our Xbox. I paid $400 for my console so I do feel that I should be notified what is all being done to “My” console. It’s like buying a new car and GM just randomly goes into your car, messes with the engine or wiring and not telling you what they were doing.. it’s yours so you should be told what they are going to do with it. Just sayin.

    • http://twitter.com/XBLDutch XBL Dutch (Ryan)

Jackie Earley, The console is yours to an extent. However, You are not required to pay for the gold subscription, nor are you requred to download the updates for Xbox LIVE (That is, if you don’t want to continue playing).

All updates to your console can be removed from your hard drive if you feel that you don’t agree with those said updates, and you may cancel your subscription at any time. No one is forcing you into this agreement with Microsoft or Xbox LIVE.

Your metaphor isn’t quite right. Xbox does not alter your hardware, they simply add additional software on top of what is there & you may remove it at your own will. Normal users do not require, nor really care about a changelog. The only users I find that want to know what Xbox LIVE is changing are those that have something to hide. Do you fall into this category?

      • Anonymous

just asking what extent that we own our consoles are you implying?just asking nothing to hide here

      • Dennis Umetzu Estela

Because i dont have nothing to hide, is suppossed that i dont have to know for what is this update? you sounds like a  Normal user.

      • Anonymous

There are other legitimate reasons to request a changelog before accepting an update.
There has been some speculation that Microsoft may be removing the windows media center extender function from the console with the next major update.
I believe this has (mostly) been debunked, however, those of us who rely on our xbox as an extender for windows media center would love to know if this is true before accepting an “update” which we know little about.
My cablecard equipped Media Center PC is not directly attached to my TV in my living room. It is in a spare bedroom/home office. If Microsoft kills this in an update I will no longer have access to my cable TV package and recorded tv throughout my home.

Therefore, I would LOVE to see a changelog before applying an update… and I have nothing to hide!
If I had to refuse the update, and discontinue use of xbox live, I would do that to keep my current entertainment system setup working.

And how do you remove a dashboard update? I didnt think that was possible!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Carreon/100000548528195 Daniel Carreon

I’m not sure if you’ve ever noticed it, but literally every other brand of consoles and PC games have changelogs for people to see. Maybe it’s not a right for us to see what is being added, although that would be like not having a right to see our country’s new laws, but its a courtesy thing to have that option available for people who want to know of any modifications that may occur from new software. I honestly do not see the problem with a changelog at all.

      • http://www.facebook.com/scorpio892007 Jackie Earley

Actually, I do not have anything to hide. You get changelogs for free software. Hell Microsoft even gives us changelogs for Windows Service Packs so why not for the Xbox 360.

Was playing rage yesterday. Turned my Xbox 320gb on today…    oh look an update?…   download the update and now my console does not seem to read any discs great !

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYSHUUYTP5SHEZFCRFW2FBKARU Anthony

Found the source of the problem for people whose xbox 360 is just idling and wont fully start up.  (Mine is a 360 Slim) But the problem appears to be the console trying to sign into xbox live.  Mine automatically does when it turns on so it keeps idling because it cant sign on.  I unplugged my router to see if it would log on then since it wouldn’t access the internet, and sure enough the xbox did not idle and started right up. I plugged in the router, tried to sign into live and it immediately froze. So something in the patch screwed up being able to sign into live. I guess for now, if you want to play a game, just unplug your router so the xbox doesn’t sign into live.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716932623 Michael Bassett

what is your isp anthony? mines sky and i get this problem every now and again i thought it was down to my router, maybe its an internal issue with the new slim xbox..

      • http://www.facebook.com/enemveecee Nigel Campbell

got a 360 elite on bt net,get same problem with that, since last, not this update, forza 3 scratched as hell disc reads fine, right sod trying to get it to read brand new games, took 8 times ejecting gow3 yesterday, dont know if due to update, internal prob, games or just dirty laser!!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYSHUUYTP5SHEZFCRFW2FBKARU Anthony

Charter is my isp.  However I resolved my issue with the help of XboxSupport.  There was a button combination you could press on the controller that would delete the previous update. I then recovered my gamertag and everything works as normal.

seem 2 work  A-ok, had a game in the drawer;  istalled maditory upgrade.. kick me offline. did a few installs… reloaded pretty right away still aknowledged disc, but played an old arcade game, then updated….

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2UL73FLRPITOFZS6BVXCIDTEJA B

Off the subject of the update today, but i found out from XBOX Live Support that all of us who bought the 360S are getting, for lack of a better term, screwed with our built-in wireless on the console. The built in wireless adapter does not accept certain speeds and frequencies of connection from “N” Class routers. To get the full speed and data rate from your wireless, you have to go spend andother $100 on the external “N” Class wireless adapter(the black one with 2 antennas). We bought our $400 consoles for a reason, so when it is advertised and spec’d to be a built-in N class wireless adapter, dont you guys think this is exactly what we should get? We spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on our consoles every year, whether it be games, points, XBOX Live Gold Membership, accessories, etc. Not toomention the initial cost of the console itself! Isn’t it about time we actually get what we pay for and is advertised by Microsoft???

So anyone want to tell me the point of the update or is it to slowly eat away at the space on our hard drives???

    • http://angryfacing.com Nick

Actually, system updates aren’t stored on your HDD, they are flashed to your Xbox.

      • Anonymous

Is that really the case? I thought there was some issue with the NXE on the arcade xbox 360 not having enough space. They were sending out free 512mb cards so the arcade consoles could update if they were too low on space.

        • http://www.facebook.com/NMDLeighBrooks Leigh Brooks

I think that’s game updates, system updates are not stored on the HDD.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1017937224 Gary Mclean

System updates are stored on the Hard Drive then the image on the hard drive is flashed on the console. If you put your hard drive in a console with a old firmware, it will flash that also without having to download the New Firmware! Game updates are provided by the game manufacturers not XBOX/Microsoft

    Hi Major,

Can you explain why updates are now in a 3-stage process. And the 3rd
stage is still downloading slow. Perhaps you could explain this in your
next pod cast if you haven’t already. As it really feels like an
    update-of an update-and a update.

    Cheers.

RE: ppl wanting to know what the update does to their console.  When you get windows updates you get told what the update is and its purpose.  Then for example I choose not to update drivers with MS ones as prefer to use the latest one from the vendors site. Maybe we should have the choice of what updates to install on our console?

    • Anonymous

What do you need to know for? If it’s features then they will tell you. If not, then there’s nothing you need to know other than the fact that you have to install it to get online. They have no obligation to disclose what is being changed at the programming level.

Major Nelson, please talk to the dimwits who are in charge of updates. I don’t want three loading screens that never end every time I update. I want a changelog available, and for god’s sakes, I don’t want to keep having updates that make no difference to my Xbox 360 experience whatsoever. I don’t use LIVE, I won’t buy Kinect, and I rarely buy new games. So why, when I sign in to LIVE to chat to a friend whilst playing a game, does all of this have to be necessary? Tell the boffins to consider what the whole community is thinking, at least on informing us of what’s going on and why it’s such a lengthy and mysterious process. Thanks, and keep us updated! (:

I’m having a problem playing 3D enabled games on my 360. When I enable 3D for Gears 3 the screen splits into two identical screens side by side. This was happening even before the update so I was kinda hoping it would fix this problem. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any feedback would be cool. I do have a 3D TV and I’m using a high speed HDMI cable. Also my Xbox is set to 3D enabled. I called Xbox support and they told me they didn’t know how to help me.

    • Ricky Worzalla

I don’t believe this is even an issue, the splitting of the screens is a way to create 3D graphics with the use of special glasses, The 2 Screens are then seen differently by the human eye and overlayed to appear as if parts of the screen are popping out. This is not the only game to have done 3D graphics this way

      • Anonymous

The screens displayed do not overlap like most 3D enabled pictures. I have a PS3 and a 3D Blu-ray player. When 3D is enabled with those it creates a double overlapped blurry picture so when the 3D glasses are powered on, the picture is seen in 3D. That is how all 3D enabled devices should work. You shouldn’t have to adjust every 3D setting every time you want to play 3D games on the Xbox. If this is the case it’s not worth it.

      • Anonymous

I have done that and it hasn’t worked properly. I have a PS3 and a 3D Blu-ray player and neither require this method. I did get the 360 to display in 3D by enabling side by side mode but the menus and friend notifications are displayed improperly when done this way. Also had to adjust each individual 3D setting in the TV menu just to get it to work. I called Samsung and they said I should not have to do all that if the Xbox outputs 3D properly.
