Top LIVE By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

Wow congrats to battlefield 3 making number 2 on the list

  • Anonymous

I remember when Halo was the de facto leader week after week, month after month, even year after year.  Either Halo Reach was an error in an otherwise dominant series, or the gaming world in general no longer cares for Halo.

    • http://twitter.com/karlcramer Karl Cramer

Well as I remember it. Halo 2 was the ruler of the top spot. It was only dethroned by Gears of War. The trolls would comment that Microsoft made sure only their titles were in the No. 1 spot. Then CoD4:MW came out. Halo 3 enjoyed a brief run at the top but it’s been mostly CoD titles since then. Just goes to show that Major’s list is honest.

      • Anonymous

Actually Halo 3 held the top spot for most of the years between Halo 3
and Halo Reach.  Occasionally COD4 would slip ahead of Halo 3, but it
was always a neck and neck race and more often than not Halo was #1.  At the lowest point, it was #2.  Now it can’t even beat out FIFA.

    • http://twitter.com/ColinMcConville Colin McConville

Halo is still relevant and loved by many. Times change. CoD4 changed them. I really do hope something comes along is both innovative and attractive to the masses. CoD4 was a revelation. I’d say BFBC2 is the only other game of consoles that tried and succeeded at doing something new and seriously impressive (BF3 is better, but its more iterative), but the pacing is too slow for teenagers apparently. Maybe I should be happy about that. BF3 players are usually decent (though very few seem to have mics, what’s up with that?).

      • Anonymous

Halo might still be relevant, but only as far as the Halo legacy can carry it.  Halo Reach has done a lot to drive the once lucrative franchise firmly into the ground.  Granted, many people (1M +) will still buy every Halo game, but that is a far cry away from the 10M + that Halo 3 sold.

Just look at recent MLG footage.  If you watch the Halo Reach streams from finals at the last three events you’ll hear crowds cheering and yelling.  Big crowds.  Only problem is those crowds are watching Starcraft and COD.  Halo Reach can’t even hold up in the top 5 of most played games on Xbox Live and it can’t draw spectators at an MLG event.

Halo is now only passively relevant and loved by few.

Finally BF3 is in 2nd, will be sad to see it go to 3rd when mw3 takes top spot….

When will call of duty end????????????????

    • Anonymous

It’s possible that it may end up still being number 2 because a lot of the people playing Black Ops will probably move to MW3.

That said, I definitely wouldn’t bet money on that.

    • Anonymous

Why ? I’m fine with CoD. I just don’t like it, period. And won’t like it to end by any means, mostly cause I want my battlefield servers full of battlefield players, not CoD players littering them (I meant no offense).

It isn’t all beauty n’ rainbows there but at least you can find some degree of cooperation and teamplay in BF while CoD players are in for the thrill of fragfest and  are mostly lone wolves.

Really, BF3 can go to the 10th position on the list. As far as I have people to play against/with I’ll be fine… in fact I hope CoD MW17 gets to1st place so lots of people will be happy just like that. CoD Rulz! Cod is killing…

I wonder if Vampire Rain went on sale for, lets say half a buck/euro/pound, and lots of people had it on their tray would make it a good game… bottom line is gaming is about how much fun you get out of a game not how many players are playing it or how many copies it sold (IMHO).

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_D2BKNKEAI56XXMJESGNLNY2P5A David

Too bad MW3 is not for sale and costs exactly the same asn BF3. Bad analogy is bad.

        • Anonymous

Take the sale thing out of the sentence and put “if by crazy coincidence all people put vampire rain in their trays”

…I think the analogy was easy enough to get to be that picky! (sales and playerbase =/= quality by definition, though it may be closely associated it can also be due to hihg marketing values and other factors). :D

Can’t figure out why people is so eager to defend at any cost the stuff is branded into their buttcheeks (not pointing anyone nor franchise).

I mean, I can say I like that or dislike this but coming to a point I wan’t a series to sell badly, dissappear or on the contrary to praise it beyond ridiculousness is out of scale IMO ^^U

  • http://twitter.com/ColinMcConville Colin McConville

Climb BF3, climb! I wonder if it can hold onto second when MW3 comes out. Even if it does, I bet will be like MW3 – 8 million players, BF3 – 1 million, Black Ops – 900,000, everything else doesn’t matter

  • https://twitter.com/#!/BeeDizz BeeDizz

Glad to see Gears 3 still riding near the top of the list. It deserves it.

  • Lee Rayson

    BF3 FTW!!

With the amount of games over the next 2 weeks we will see alot change on the list

  • http://profiles.google.com/ktfreak4jesus Kaleb Kirton

Halo 2 is still the best

  • Anonymous

Major, why are the Arcade and Indie titles always listed by full versions purchased? I think the list would be more useful if it was listed by UU’s like the Live titles.

  • http://twitter.com/Chiefmegadeth Shae Mcfadyen

Awesome BF3 is moven on up! Amazing multi player… Gears 3 is so sick online!
I played MW3 at mates house, yeah i was bored within 30mins playing online,I really thought i was just playing a MW2 add on. Single player was fun! but ts only 5 hours long. Not buying this game.
1st time in history i haven’t bought a COD game! and i love War games!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/echeverriamario Mario Echeverria

COD is still king. MW3 will be #1 for at least a YEAR

    • Anonymous

      …whatever floats your boat, dude…

      • Anonymous

        Fanboyism aside, he’s probably correct.

    • http://www.facebook.com/brandon.slezak Brandon Slezak

For the record MW3 isn’t King, it’s just consumed en masse, just like McDonalds, and I don’t regard McDonalds as King of anything

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=725173639 Raphael John

At least BF3 went up 1 spot. That says something! Very happy and competition is very healthy :)

  • http://twitter.com/lightsup55 Timothy

I’d really like to see the actual unique user numbers for each of the top spots.

I mean, seriously, how is Call of Duty 4 on there? Last time I was in the online multiplayer, there weren’t that many on it (about a thousand players maybe). I know that the online multiplayer number within the game doesn’t count the single player aspect of it, but you do get a general idea.

CoD players playing online multiplayer (past 30 minutes)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 ———- 1,347,093 (907,761 in playlists)
Call of Duty: Black Ops ——————– 203,398
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ———- 72,633 (38,814 in playlists)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ———- 3,309
Call of Duty: World at War —————– 1,255

Keep in mind, “Live Activity” counts people who are *logged in to* Xbox Live while playing a title–not necessarily if they’re playing the multiplayer component of that title. Not sure if this sheds any light, but maybe it has something to do with it?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002192908453 Matthew Wild

Where did you obtain those numbers
      btw
i am currently not sure whether to cod or skyrim the reviews were really good for both
      What do I do!

  • BrianFX

Is MS ever going to offer this info live (for all games)?   Would love to see if there is anyone still playing some older 360 titles (UT3, Burnout Revenge, etc) but too much of a pain to have to launch the game to check.  So much easier on PC with website server trackers like gametracker.

  • http://twitter.com/habpipes Mitchell Yachyshyn

I wonder how high skyrim will go with all the horus I am going to have to put into it lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/brandon.slezak Brandon Slezak

Nice to see Battlefield get some success, a great franchise that deserves some duckets, which will of course give us more Battlefield moments for years to come…..

MW3 or Skyrim the debate in my mind rages on
    mainly a Halo guy

  • http://gbleezy.com Graham Savai’i Hart
