Introducing the official Xbox LIVE iOS App

Xbox LIVE has released the official Xbox LIVE app for iOS owners. This is a universal iOS app.

This free app will allow you to stay connected to the Xbox LIVE community when you are away from your console. Some of the features include:

  • Read and send messages to friends
  • Manage your friends list, invite new friends
  • Read and Edit your full LIVE profile (name, bio, motto)
  • Change your avatar features/items with the avatar closet
  • View and compare your achievement progress with friends

I’ve posted some screenshots to give you an idea of what to expect

You can download the free app here

Also, yesterday, we introduced the Xbox Companion for Windows Phone 7, which has even more features than the iOS app. You can see details and download that free app here.

Love it. Here’s to a huge 2012, Microsoft.

iOS? Really? Why not Android? You know, that platform that makes you more money than the one you developed yourself.

Lol. The biggest market is android. Get facts straight first.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jan-Vaclavik/100000506187042 Jan Václavík

There may be more devices running Android compared to any other mobile system, but that alone does not make Android Market the biggest.

Glad someone understands this. Thumbs up, Jan.

Must say that it looks great. Can’t wait for the Android version!

    You could use USB keyboard.

Love the App., especially the iPad version. Finally!

  • Vagner Ranieri

The application is much more beautiful than the Xbox dashboard itself.
The white background and black letters give a cleaner look. The current Xbox 360 Dashboard is polluted, dirty and full of useless things.
Should have put the new Xbox dashbord, as the social hub of the iPad app.

    Yesterday: Windows Phone
    Today: iPhone
    Tomorrow: Android? Sure hope so.

Why is it always iOS versions first? Isn’t there supposed to be more people with ANdroid based devices than iOS based nowadays?!? Better be an Android version fairly soon.  Don’t see why you can’t develop them and release them all at once though!

    • http://www.toothball.co.uk Toothball

It’s probably because there are far fewer iOS devices, so any sort of App development can be through testing much sooner.

  • Anonymous

Good job!, everyone seems to love it. (except android fans :))

Scratch this off the “thing’s we’ll never see” list. Nice!

nice app beautiful,  great way to end 2011 and start 2012, thumps-up Microsoft

This iOS app is awesome, Major!

Special thanks to the Xbox Team.

    • Anonymous

Ya, I thought it was a WP7 only App, until my brother told me there was a iOS version.  Sent him a message using the App, which he got.  he can’t reply to it because he’s not a Gold Member!!!

The App looks nice, though there’s some issues with it, and it’s lacking on a few things, but overall, this is why I went with a iPhone in the first place,  everyone supports it.  Not asking when is it coming to MY phone!!!   This was my #1 reason!!!   Very bottom of my long list would be ‘because it’s made by Apple’!!!

  • Eleo

Who cares who has “more” users when we’re talking about (literally) billions of app downloads per month on either platform? Android Market hit 10 billion apps just recently.  App Store hit that point only earlier this year.  I’m sure App Store is bigger, but Android Market is still huge in its own right.

It’s not like this app was made by some solo developer on his freetime.  Microsoft has plenty of resources at their disposal to release for Android and iOS simultaneously, they just chose not to.

Pretty much every major service or social network has an app on both platforms.  It actually blows my mind that this wouldn’t be the case with a service as huge as Xbox LIVE.

    • silencets

And how much is bloat ware? A better metric is the average each user spends on apps per phone. iPhone users disproportionately spend more on apps over life of device, which is why the lion’s share of app profits flow through App Store.

      • Anonymous

No one really cares about Android.  All it has going for it is it’s FREE!!!  Well except for those that have to pay MS to use it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

      • Eleo

How is that a better metric when the app is free?

    • Anonymous

The question was: “why is it always iOS first?”  The answer is because it’s a bigger app market.

I didn’t say Android doesn’t have a lot of users, nor that it is not important.

But all this nonsense about Android being a bigger market for apps is just wrong; more handsets does not mean more app audience.  And developers will choose the larger audience first.  It would be idiotic not to.

I have no doubt that there will be an Android version of this app. But all this rage that Android is being disrespected is just silly. Companies, even huge one like Microsoft (and Google and Apple) are made of people, and it takes time and planning to do a good job.

      • Eleo

Of course “it takes time and planning to do a good job”; what kind of point does that make?

It’s 100% realistic to develop and release an application on multiple platforms at the same time.  A perfect example of this would be Sony, who released their Playstation app for both iOS and Android at the same time, back in January.

Microsoft similarly could have done this, if they wanted to.  Frankly, when it’s a company the size of Microsoft, anything less at this point in time comes off as half-assed.

Android users recognize that, and it’s not going to make any of them any bigger fans of Xbox LIVE to know they’re seen as an afterthought.

Where is the Android Version?  How about forgetting MSFT’s regrettable past of being “closed” and open up an API for free use utilizing the Xbox Live service, and open the floodgates of innovation and engagement!

I think this was a brilliant marketing move by MS. It gives iOs users a glimpse of the wp7 user interface, and how smooth it is. Devoted iOs users won’t be swayed, but if even a small percentage who are on the fence switch to wp7, then it was worth the effort to develop this app for iOs.  And after all, aren’t you glad there are so many options for phones? Each OS has features that cater to different people’s personalities, needs, and wants.  Me?  I love my wp7!

I’d have been much more impressed by this app 2 or 3 years ago.

Looks like there is space for additional “channels”. Can we expect to see a Marketplace channel in the future? Would be nice to see my points balance too.

So can we get an xbox app for the Zune HD? I figured when windows phone 7 came out that an app would also come out for Zune.

  • http://twitter.com/Evil_E_13 Eddie Rocha

Yeah but you think Microsoft would support their own products first.

Once again, Android gets ignored. Oh well, with you still requiring a gold membership to access Netflix now that you’ve removed party viewing (the one reason you gave for making gold a req), I can’t really say I’m surprised.

I guess for now I’ll just ignore having a gold membership.

  • http://twitter.com/LordBBH Lord BBH

oh cool I can invite more friends to my friends list… oh wait my friends list is still at the 100 cap. When the hell are we going to get an increase on that?

    bring back netflix partys

  • http://twitter.com/gpaterson8 Gary Paterson

Will there be any app for Android… with Halo Waypoint coming to all platforms now is the time to complete the xbox experience. Even just an app to look at ones friends and achievements would be great so as to stop people installing apps which steal log-in details, etc.

  • http://www.ghzsports.com GHz Charles

I had to accept a new TOS agreement before it would work, but after that no problems.

  • Walter Disney

    No Linux version? LAME!
    ;p

  • Rob adams

    Love it!

I’ve been using the unofficial version for years!  I do have one problem and that’s the icon, it looks too flat and generic, I nearly missed it in the app store as it didn’t strike me as a professional looking icon.  Make it a bit more shiny and iOS looking and shorten the name.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jclowers Jeff Clowers

I have to say this is outstanding!!!  Thank you for this update I was jealous of the windows phone getting something.  I think this is a great move, looks good on both my ipad and iphone…  Thanks again!

    Android please

  • Anonymous

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t there more Android users than iPhone users? Shouldn’t this app be released for the Android first, or at the same time as the iPhone? Why is there no Android app?

    • Anonymous

Like always, no one cares about Android except the fandroids!!!

  • Anonymous

Well it looks clear from comments on here and elsewhere that Android version is in greater demand

    • Anonymous

Not really!  It just means with no Android version, you have a bunch of people with Android wanting it also.  The iOS users have no need, they already have it as usual!!!

Somewhat frustrated because Windows phone 7 did have the only xbox live app that was official.  One reason I got the Windows phone.  Frustrating.

Love the app MN! Just hope that you’re able to set Beacons for games not on your “Recent” list in future updates. Otherwise, flawless! Good job!
