Changes for Inside Xbox (U.S.) *Updated*

In the last 10 years, Xbox LIVE has transformed in so many amazing ways, and as a community we’ve experienced so much together. I’ve personally witnessed many changes that have helped Xbox LIVE improve and together with our members we’ve created a community we all value and rely on.

At Xbox, we are focused on making entertainment and gaming more amazing, and we must continue to invest our resources and talents wisely. Consequently, we’ve decided to discontinue production of Inside Xbox in the United States, and as a result this content will also no longer be available in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Xbox LIVE in EMEA is currently looking at its operating model for Inside Xbox. This could potentially result in some changes, but we have no news here to share yet. Xbox LIVE in Mexico and Japan will continue to produce first-party content for its members via other media outside of the Inside Xbox brand.

We want to express our sincere appreciation to all of our viewers and fans of Inside Xbox, and remain committed to providing our members with access to high-quality news and information via the console, social media channels and We will be leveraging third-party news and video content available through a variety of existing and future partners, and supplementing this content with select first-party offerings. However, day-to-day news content and weekly programming currently offered though Inside Xbox will cease production in the United States. This includes shows like Major’s Minute, Featured Videos and Insider Moves packaged under the Inside Xbox brand.

This decision was not made lightly. Our teams working on Inside Xbox have done a great job connecting with our members and delivering high-quality, informative game news and tips. We thank them all for their contributions to the Xbox LIVE community and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Update: I posted this in the comments, but a few folks have missed it: I will continue to do the work I have always done, that part will not change. The weekly videos that I used to do with Inside Xbox will unfortunately not continue. I hope that clears things up.

Update on Europe:

Following the news last week that that Inside Xbox in the US was to cease production, the team in Europe has been investigating what makes most sense for them and the Xbox LIVE community as they continue to strive to deliver the latest gaming and entertainment news for users across the region.

As such, they have decided to move away from the current first-party produced content model and transition to a third-party content model, which will provide timely and locally-relevant content to users across more of the EMEA markets. Whilst this means that the Inside Xbox brand will effectively be retired in Europe, the focus remains on continuing to provide the Xbox LIVE community with the latest and best in games and entertainment news and information.

Xbox 360, Xbox Live By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • Jim E. Rustler

“decided to move away from the current first-party produced content model and transition to a third-party content model”

    Just like the 360’s games!

  • Kevin Ray

    “Xbox Live Community”…what
community? It’s an ad server now. In their quest to be the
Enertain-be-all-Box they have prematurely shot the people who made this
console what it is in the heart…the gamers. Gamers are what made you
and your escalating desire to abandon them flat out is going to be your
    undoing MS.

  • xLoCk0nx

I think the cancellation of first party inside xbox content in the UK is a major loss to the community and it’s something Microsoft will regret. I really enjoyed the UK features like sentuamessage, The Nexus, The Watch and the Monday Musing (of which I contributed 3 myself). They helped make the community feel DIRECTLY involved in Inside Xbox. Dan and Andy were amiable hosts with a very British sense of humour and they outclassed anything the American dashboard has ever had on show.

Now we’re going to be bombarded with rubbish third party content from IGN and Gamespot etc, plus ads all over the dashboard. Massive thumbs down from me.

  • Kevin Ray

One last thing, as has been mentioned before this move has ended a lot of jobs at MS and effected many families internationally. The cost of producing original programs could NOT have been more than a drop in the bucket for MS but to continue their move away from a “Gaming” console to a “Family EntertainBox” they have ruined the lives of many of these Families they are shilling to.
Cold inhuman corporate greed isn’t a cliche with these people…’s a mission statement.

  • Alan Fowle

This is awful… Andy & Dan used to make my Xbox feel like part of the ‘family’, now all of a sudden it feels like a money-hungry faceless black monolith in the room. I think you guys just killed a very crucial part of Xbox.

  • mike p

A while ago MS increased the price on xbox live gold. i have yet to see anything worth that price increase, all ive seen is the xbox dashboard downgraded in terms of navigation and design, a few apps that are mostly catered towards their precious US customers, that have their own subscriptions anyway, and now we dont even have inside xbox, what next a price increase increase in arcade games? oh wait minecraft came out for 1600 points today, i think xbox is going downhill.

  • James Cannell

I personally think this is a sad day for Xbox users. Andy and Dan are amazing guys who have so much passion for what they do. Guess the space they leave behind will be filled with a load of shit and stupid fucking adverts all over the place. Good work Micro$oft.

  • Jonah Falcon

It’s not THAT big a deal. I enjoy developer diaries, myself, which is what will be used instead.

  • ryder4life22187

Just a matter of time before microsoft axes the Deal of the week so they can put another ad up for a movie or car that i could care less about

  • Lee Rayson

Im sorry but this is mesed up, our guys (uk) Dan and Andy do a whole lot more than major does in videos. im not renewing xbox live anymore. i see the business plan your pulling everything for stupid apps and work on the next xbox well im pulling my credit card from your serivce.

  • cookie_monster

wished i stayed a sony brat the ps1/2 was so good to me and then i when to the 360 yeah games are good but you pay for xbox live what does that buy you though lets break it down will be doing it in uk pricing £34 – mutiplayer games with modders who can not beat you properly then theres the annoying 7 year old american kids who yell down the mics who have there mics already to close to there mouth with no manners what so ever and people that disconnect when you are about to beat them so you can not gain rank on a game that has a dodgy level up system and perks for staying gold on xbox live get demos or games off the market before silver accounts with the money Microsoft makes off idiots that bye games off of the on-demand service for easy 1000g and advertisement you would think they make the service fair and great PlayStation lets people play together for free Microsoft lets people have free accounts which means u can look at the market and buy stuff but not play with people ummmmm equals micro$oft wants money instead of creating a good service people will still buy idiotic stuff because they buy on whims so why do we have to pay to play online and why do we also have to pay for gold so we can pay for the service like netflix or lovefilm when they can only be used if you pay them and pay micro$soft this makes me think of who what why when. who does this help not the people that should matter not the fans. what does it mean micro$oft will never be fan friendly. why do they do this easy because they can do this because they are the big guy and we the fans are the little guy and if i was the big guy working at micro$oft i would screw this and change it for the fans you get paid for pc you get paid for os you get paid for phones now you get paid for games for pc and xbox which have glitches that have achievement that wont unlock or save data gets missing. and when will they they change well this is simply 1 when they really care about the fans or 2 when they get hacked again and stay it never happened and not do anything to say sorry like sony gave some games away for free

  • NiCk14AlPhA

Just Tweeted to Dan Maher of Inside Xbox UK, saying what im thinking…

One of the four lights on my xbox 360 will glow dim this weekend, as its as old as Inside Xbox UK :/

  • NymChimpsky

Sean T said it perfectly about the shocking and disrespectful way in which you handled this news – I don’t think MS realise what a great job the IX guys were doing to engage with, what I would have thought was the target audience for Xbox, that is committed and knowledgeable gamers. Gone were the days of Tina Sum Sum and co reading an autocue to over-enthusiastically promote some weak ‘fun for all the family’ XBL game, and instead we had well-presented, well-written discussions of a variety of games to appeal to cater to all. The humour was genuinely funny and kept everything down to earth.

In the UK we’re getting fed up with the glib corporate speak which is always obvious and jarring – I know MS are very pleased they’ve found new ways to ‘monetise’ and ‘leverage’ content but if it’s not interesting why would I watch it?? Gf and I made sure to watch everything Dan and Andy made over the last 4 years and we will not be doing the same with whatever is scraped together to fill the gap.

Shame shame shame – maybe I’ll just use my PS3 to watch Netflix, iplayer, 4OD etc as another unique point for Xbox has been discarded!

  • Ant

The team in Europe has been seeing what’s best for the community??? At least be honest about it….extra space for a lumia ad I suppose

  • wadedorrell

This seems reasonable. I rarely watch these. I do wonder if subscription cost will go down or better options will fill in (I’d like to see Music Pass extended to the family for example.)

  • Kairu

You got some splainin’ too do.

  • Chris Posting

We want stuff like Inside Xbox. We do not want ADS. I’ll be voting with
my wallet, as you’re sure to point out that it’s the obvious option for
us. I no longer wish to see half a dozen Sky adverts before reaching the
gaming tab. Goodbye to you, and Rupert Murdoch’s corrupt empire.

  • Sean T

Notice the total lack of response by Larry Nelson on this topic despite the barrage of new comments being made since the news of the UK and European Inside Xbox being killed off.

Interesting, he forces those people fired to stay silent until he adds a few lines of text to his precious blog, then doesnt even Tweet the update when it goes LIVE, instead relying on those who were made unemployed to finally tweet the news themselves, whilst he carrys on tweeting his happy thoughts over minecraft

This shows more then anything else, that the Xbox community on both sides of the Atlantic have no voice…..Inside Xbox at least tried to focus attention on the community side of the Xbox experience but now there is what….relying on IGN to do their job, IGN have their own community in US and UK (Europe), MS are simply handing their community to IGN

I will not be using the Xbox and LIVE for anything other then gaming, no media apps, no music purchases. I have un-subscribed from the Major Nelson Podcast because he does not represent the face of the Xbox community no matter how much his over inflated ego and position at Xbox makes him believe he is. Stepto himself even tweeted his disbelief at this news yesterday…..that says it all really

I doubt Nelson will respond to any new comment, considering how he buried the news on his blog, especially the UK news, his podcast does not feature any reaction to the items on his blog…this weeks podcast will be nothing more then another marketing hour long advert for Minecraft and whatever gadgets they have bought on Amazon and how they get to go all VIP at E3 representing Xbox

Xbox was always about the community, doing things for the community and listening to their voice…now more then ever its clear, its all about the money, its about getting as much as they can get and giving little back. They think that media apps is the future of Xbox “gaming”…they are wrong, were wrong with kinect, are wrong with this and more and more people are starting to see less and less for their subscription price.

Nelson, he thinks he knows the Xbox Community….the man should read his own god dam blog

    • Bradley

Very well said. Could not agree more.
His complete intolerance towards the xbox community is unacceptable. How long does it really take to skim through comments on a new blog post? When the average total comments are around 20-30. His time is no more valuable than ours, we’re taking OUR time to ask questions, write our opinions etc on this blog, but he can’t take his time to answer even a few of them.

The face of Xbox has changed, and for the worse. Since the discontinuation of IX I’ve been going through some old videos of IX and general xbox interviews and found one with Larry, talking about how he communicates with the community. I’m not sure if I can post links, but search “Career profile: Larry Hryb” on Youtube. Go to: 1:45 – 2:15. It’s not even funny how untrue his comments are. That Ken guy who thinks he knows what Larry does, needs to watch this also. Heck, everyone should – to see how little he contributes.

Does he take feedback on DoTW? No
Does he take feedback about pricings? No
Does he take feedback about ads on the dashboard? No
Does he take any feedback at all? No!

So that interview was more lies. If you do take feedback, well it sure as hell doesn’t seem like it. No difference is ever made.

    • Stephan Tenspel

I totally agree, microsoft are money wolfs. The only thing they care about is money, not the community. Same with nelson, he puts stuff on but no comment ever.

I am adding my voice to these comments to support Dan and Andy and production team behind Sent you a message and Nexus and Watch and so forth. I feel this s a terrible idea and one that supports the needs of the few to the outrage of the many.

Further because of this event I have finally noticed that as a Paying Gold Subcriber I am being advertised to. Is this the new model for subscriptions, I pay to be sold to ? I thought the value in subscriptions was to drop adverts ?

The service is deteriorating from an active online community bound by a passion for a gaming to a monotheistic broadcasting tool targeted at subscribers for the benefit of a few corporations seeking bottom line over high praise.

This shame here is that Major Nelson and his team have to pick up the flack and the outrage.

If I can offer one thought to this : Will it be as easy for independents to submit and add content to these new channels as it will be for the deeply money lined pockets of the big producers ?

  • Andrew L

I haven’t played xbox a lot over the past 6 months but I really used to enjoy Inside Xbox. Made the paying customers part of the community. Andy and Dan were passionate about their job and really interacted with the customers. You don’t listen to the people who pay for games and subscriptions and you’ve gone seriously wrong. It’s an absolute disgrace, Microsoft, you’ve turned into a money grabbing company with not a care in the world for the customers who pay your wages. I wont be renewing my gold when it runs out and I think many more won’t either. You absolute disgrace.

  • Lita

I am really disappointed in this decision for IX, especially for the UK/Ireland. Andy and Dan were fantastic and their shows were of such good quality. The first thing I did on a Saturday was to turn on my Xbox and watch the weekly show which became part of my weekend ritual. The pure entertainment factor from SentUAMessage or The Nexus was better than anything on current TV.

Often in discussions as to why XBL was better than PSN, one argument I would often state was about these guys and the shows that gave XBL that little bit extra. And now? We’ll have some “third-party content model, which will provide timely and locally-relevant content to users” which we all know means ads.

    Bring back IX!

  • fried_egg

I guess you will be cutting the price then asap. I really do not need a load of tv services that just duplicate what I already have – and on a pathetically bad platform at that. Using an xbox to watch cable tv is like using paper to build a car. Xbox live is too expensive for what it actually provides, which is often nobody (as there isnt even a bot to kill) on most games, or in the case of forza, games where the host has set it to 99 laps of a 9minute a lap course and is doing no more than donuts on the start line. Better still, how many 18+ games appear to be played by kids (very highpitched voices just singing all match), thank you kinect mic! How about if you actually monitor the noise on each game and if it sounds like a 10 year old is playing an 18+ game you police it rather than just supply it so they can play? These inside shows were nearly the only “value” I got out of my sub.

  • Owen Mcgarvey

disgusted…. no consultation with the users… xbox seems to have been invaded with the tory party…
doing what they like regardless of what the users want… so much for the community xbox…
lets just hope that xbox does not go down the same road as the tory party… to hell… no more sent u a message etc etc etc… tis a sad sad sad day for xbox users wordwide… get rid of nelson he does bug all anyway…..

  • Owen Mcgarvey

cannot believe that my comments are being removed… lol censorship eh… right then xbox lets see how you like my facebook page :)

Oh Nelson, spineless as always, never change.

  • Seth Lindenman

I think this is an absolute outrage. Xbox live had the BEST unique ways of communicating with their fans and now out of the blue they say no. Plus they still want $60 plus a year for gold and I have seen things progressively get worse on Xbox live such as no longer being able to watch Netflix in one party. I think not only as a gold member my self but as a shareholder for Microsoft I feel that we are being let down now. Andy and Dan had a passion for SentUMessage that can not be topped. I am starting to wonder where my money is going for the useless features in the dashboard that I don’t use since I do not have Kinect. I personally fell that getting rid of Inside Xbox is also outrageous. I saw it as a valuable tool and information to what was happening. Now there is NO difference between gold and non gold memberships. So once mine expires I am done unless WE GET OUR FEATURES BACK AND OUR GREAT SERVICE THAT WE DESERVE!!!

  • Major Lee Pished

But is he even really a Major?

  • Thomas Brizendine

This is horrible, i have signed a petition and will be working to make Microsoft regret this hasty decision like it did with zune party viewing. I am really hoping that the fans of insider moves and nexus as well as SUAM bring about a backlash so fierce that even the mass effect 3 backlash looks small. going behind the backs of your customers is exactly the wrong way to things in a society with movements like occupy wall-street. major nelson should have at least presented the issues to us before they made their horrible uneducated decision to stop inside xbox, why? maybe because we would have had a chance to show our support rather than have to deal with this domino effect of closers by Microsoft. you have one of the largest companies in the world whos founder is a devout charity giver and your only rival is a failing sony and you bring us this old world excuse. I am deeply saddened by this lack of consumer respect. sorry about the spelling and grammar errors i have a job to goto, yeah minus one paying customer.

  • tim cotter

microsoft i will never trust you again. never thought id say this but i will be moving to ps 4 next generation microsoft relied on a hard core of gamers till they built up their market share and are now going back to corporation town and shitting all over the core xbox 360 fanbase!!!!!!

  • Andreas Aigner

you’re spitting right in the face of all paying customers – congratulations, and i thougt sony is an awful company…
