Changes for Inside Xbox (U.S.) *Updated*

In the last 10 years, Xbox LIVE has transformed in so many amazing ways, and as a community we’ve experienced so much together. I’ve personally witnessed many changes that have helped Xbox LIVE improve and together with our members we’ve created a community we all value and rely on.

At Xbox, we are focused on making entertainment and gaming more amazing, and we must continue to invest our resources and talents wisely. Consequently, we’ve decided to discontinue production of Inside Xbox in the United States, and as a result this content will also no longer be available in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Xbox LIVE in EMEA is currently looking at its operating model for Inside Xbox. This could potentially result in some changes, but we have no news here to share yet. Xbox LIVE in Mexico and Japan will continue to produce first-party content for its members via other media outside of the Inside Xbox brand.

We want to express our sincere appreciation to all of our viewers and fans of Inside Xbox, and remain committed to providing our members with access to high-quality news and information via the console, social media channels and We will be leveraging third-party news and video content available through a variety of existing and future partners, and supplementing this content with select first-party offerings. However, day-to-day news content and weekly programming currently offered though Inside Xbox will cease production in the United States. This includes shows like Major’s Minute, Featured Videos and Insider Moves packaged under the Inside Xbox brand.

This decision was not made lightly. Our teams working on Inside Xbox have done a great job connecting with our members and delivering high-quality, informative game news and tips. We thank them all for their contributions to the Xbox LIVE community and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Update: I posted this in the comments, but a few folks have missed it: I will continue to do the work I have always done, that part will not change. The weekly videos that I used to do with Inside Xbox will unfortunately not continue. I hope that clears things up.

Update on Europe:

Following the news last week that that Inside Xbox in the US was to cease production, the team in Europe has been investigating what makes most sense for them and the Xbox LIVE community as they continue to strive to deliver the latest gaming and entertainment news for users across the region.

As such, they have decided to move away from the current first-party produced content model and transition to a third-party content model, which will provide timely and locally-relevant content to users across more of the EMEA markets. Whilst this means that the Inside Xbox brand will effectively be retired in Europe, the focus remains on continuing to provide the Xbox LIVE community with the latest and best in games and entertainment news and information.

thankyou for the feedback guys and that wiki link   i guess what im saying is as u guys know with the current dash you can only see ur recent 10 achievements in proper resolution and when u select a game the guide pops up to display all achievements at a crappy res.  i still gotta ask y have they done this   y is it put under the guide program   2 dashes ago if you highlighted a game a screen would come up and display all achievements about 9 or 10 across in beautiful res and made the cheevos sparkle   its silly to use the guide program  clearly it affects their appearance       anything else u highlight and select eg.  system settings, arcade and add ons, videos,  in the marketplace all run fine but for some reason with this new dash when u select cheevos the guide comes up to display them.    really, really poor designing.    b4 this current dash the guide was never associated with cheevos

  • Brian G.

I used to watch that stuff until the latest dashboard update came out. Now all the good is buried under ads and hard to navigate to. I have no idea what’s going on because the dashboard now hides anything worth checking out.

  • Devon Edwards

Wow – chop it lean and rake it in, huh?  Remember all the hype over ‘Prime Time’ and 1v100?  Remember all the consoles you sold that Christmas? …and now – nothing.  For the rest of you folks – understand that it’s ONLY being cancelled in the U.S. because Microsoft has that market locked up and don’t feel they need to ‘value add’ any more.  Other markets face threat from Playstation and so Microsoft will continue to keep programs like ‘Inside Xbox’ running because for ‘some reason’ it’s entirely justifiable somehow.  The days of Xbox ‘community’ are swiftly coming to an end (as is the charm, I fear)

It also begs the question, Larry – how much longer do YOU have?  Surely this decision must be making you nervous too.

    • Ganon255

Microsoft would be insane to ever drop Larry, he is an icon.

    • huck

its like politics, sucks to live in a “safe seat”, oh and just so u know canada, aus, and nz are not quite american states just yet. ;)

  • AndyMP

Strange decision to move away from creating genuinely useful content for the gamer. Guides on how to use the console, etc. can’t exactly be replaced by 3rd party content.

  • J.A.J.G. Thiéfaine

First things first: Free Hybrid Beta Key for one lucky person: JFTRW-3FYD2-Q6FPG-J7PCC-WJG7Z (Note US Gold accounts only – don’t know why 5th Cell and MS didn’t filter beta tester locales before sending the keys – ???). Oh well, enjoy! I’ll check out the trial when it is available.
I agree with most people here. I like Metro, I seriously do, but the advertisements on the Xbox dashboard need to go! They make it even harder to find stuff. If you have 300 Arcade games navigating is already a nightmare without them. Would it be so hard to add another row or more to cut the scrolling in half? Same thing with the achievement roster…
We are PAYING gold subscribers. There shouldn’t be any adds AT ALL! And now there are rumors of Microsoft putting in 15-30 second adds all over the place. This is UNACCEPTABLE! We pay for Gold services to avoid the regular TV advertising BS.

These points were already clearly made during the dashboard testing phase on MS Connect by a whole slew of beta testers (including me) and what was the response? THIS IS BY DESIGN. Seriously??? Look more at what your customers like and want instead of monetization!
The Xbox brand grew on the core gamer and now it has completely lost focus. It’s nice to have additional services to make it the ultiamte set-top box and supporting the casual market, but not a the cost of your loyal and paying core community.
Removing Inside XBbox is a big mistake IMHO. If this termination were to strike Europe, you would be robbing us of one of the things that sets Xbox Live apart from the competition as we only have a fraction of the huge package of services the US have. One wonders where all the paying subscribers’ money is going to and I fear next E3 will be a major disappointment for all of us.

  • Jerry Graham

You guys are ruining something i once loved…

  • Ω Jalil Purtow Ω

No doubt has something to do with IGN and it’s app. Rather have Major Nelson as the face of Xbox than Jessica Chobot.

  • Carrick Fillingham

A “polite”,  patronising way of telling everyone they’re fired. Great.
This move is basically going to cut the links between the good people at Xbox who we know and love, and us.

They’re killing the community! Good Job!

  • David Garcia

This is highly disappointing.  One of the reasons why I feel like my money spent on an Xbox live Subscription was to support this content, which I enjoyed immensely.

I’m not going to sugar coat it.. this IS the advertising that got me to buy games.  I would not have given things like Splosion Man and Gunstringer a chance had it not been for this content.  I feel Microsoft is abandoning the sense of product pride they have built through these productions.

  • QuixoticRocket

I vote Larry gets a youtube channel and continues Major’s Minute all “cloak and dagger” ^_^
    Who’s with me?

Seriously though: will miss some of those shows.

  • James Denham

What about Sent U A Message?

  • Bush O Connor

Sent U A Message it should be more like Send Us A Joke thats actually funny

    • Joris Springer

It should actually be called: “send me a tickle so I can laugh on the bad jokes”.

  • Matthew Nicholls

Bloody Microsoft… I admit I haven’t watched a inside xbox video since the crappy dashboard update because I couldn’t find it. MS are to blame. How do you go from a whole blade for inside xbox to a tiny little box in videos that still doesn’t make sense when you click on it. Get rid of a good thing for the sake of advertisements. What do we pay LIVE for?

    • fried_egg

It just shows how awful “metro” as a design is. Of course MS has this as their latest design push so they are not listening to users, no matter how badly everything they sell fails like “kin” then “windows phone” — how much money, how little interest? – MS need a clear out of a lot of their marketing folks. They are not intouch with the consumer

  • Benjamin Starnes

This is just sad! I really enjoyed and looked forward to all content from Larry, Tina, Ryan and Denny, SUAM/NEXUS, and the rest that made Inside XBOX what it is today. Hope there’s something new and just as entertaining and informative as all the IX shows have been.

Head up and good luck Larry!!

    • Joris Springer

I am going to miss Tina and Larry too :(, it was great fun watching them in What2Play.

  • Doug Walsh

The new Dashboard made you had to really hunt for that stuff anyway. It’s almost like they designed it to sabotage the # of views you would receive. I used to watch it all the time with the old dashboard, but can’t say I’ve watched any videos on the dash ever since the tiles update. They’re so far hidden, it’s just not worth the effort. Sorry.

    Shame on Microsoft.

It’s like hearing one of the family is going to die.

  • BigBernard

Sent U A Message is garbage anyway so that won’t be missed. Shame about the other stuff though.

  • Avikumar Patel

i used to watch it, but really doesn’t pop out on the dash anymore. Also, that ign app needs some issues worked out, its’ really laggy.

  • StrikeSudden

Does this mean crazzy larry is gone?

  • Josh Martin

Hey can you do a show of just you and e? I’ve been asking for the past 5 weeks :(

  • Joris Springer

Seriously, replacing Inside Xbox with IGN is a really bad move, because face it, that is what you guys are doing and it means that it is being replaced by people who are less close to the community (since IGN is multiplatform) and it will take time for the community to “trust” them. We know you guys from Inside Xbox for many years now, you guys (and girls) have become part of the community, have been our “friends and playmates”. We did not watch you for reviews but because you cared.
IGN is for many just a money machine and ignores for a big part the community. We love the crazy things you (Yes I am talking to you Major Nelson) needed to do. We are going to miss that so very much. Is there no way the big guys will reconsider? After all those years we in Europe can finally share in all the fun you guys have been having in the USA and now we already lose it again? Being replaced by something we can’t experience (again)?
It is a huge pity :-(.

  • Avikumar Patel

    Please don’t cancel this!!

  • Avikumar Patel

    You must not dooo this!!!

  • Bob Kauffman

I did watch it every time but with the new dashboard its impossible to find.

  • Shonk .

    The dash needs to go

I dont do anything on my xbox anymore

    apart from game

My 300 arcade games are murder to browse

So i dont play them anymore and hardly ever buy new ones

Its murder getting to The DLNA player

    its murder doing anything

I just cant be bothered jumping through so many hoops to do every single thing

The kinect dash is a gimmick its unusable with kinect in any real long term way

and even more unusable with with a joystick

and tbh i have had enough of it

    • huck

  • Gamescrap

I thought people paid a premium for a service to REMOVE ads.

  • alias: Hizoka Andou

tell me where was IX after the update? I used to see the show, it was comfortable… Well…

  • Sean T

I wonder if the honest response to this move will be mentioned on the next podcast, whenever they get around to mentioning what gadget tat they have bought that we dont care about.

Moves like this get swept under the carpet, as a result of this news, the UK Xbox Community and gaming media, have come out in support of our own Inside Xbox Team, saying why we want it kept and not replaced by some 3rd party App…our subscriptions allow for MS to spend money on things like Inside Xbox

They already make extra money from the non xbox related Adverts that clutter up the dashboard. All the Media apps that hound us whenever we go online, despite most of us having some form of Cable or Satellite deal packaged with our broadband for our entertainment needs for TV and Movies so where does our subscription fee goes to, because party chat and laggy connections to some games via P2P networking is hardly covered entirely by gold membership

Hoping this gets a mention and the reaction and feedback is acknowledged, instead of a generic Major Nelson “well we wish them well in their future endeavours…now E, what new plastic toy have you collected and Laura, have you spoken with your family using Kinect recently blah blah”

  • pmwarner

I think what microsoft should do is if you are a silver live member, have it be add supported, and if you have a gold membership you lose the ads, but get inside xbox. I have a gold membership and feel since i’m dropping 60 bucks a year on the service, i should not have to put up with the ads.

  • Darkguardian1314

You know it’s bad for the viewers when you say ” this decision was not made lightly”. It’s like Futurama’s “Good new, everyone.” when it’s really bad news. Thanks for keeping your viewers in the loop. Many podcasts just stop and other just go off in a weird tangent. Thank you.

  • Kevin Ray

I called this months ago on the Xbox November Update Feedback boards when they foisted their “too annoying to bother with” Metro dash upon us.
I said then “Microsoft will blame the shows themselves for falling viewership before EVER blaming their cumbersome Metro dash and start canceling them left and right, you watch”…… fact I underestimated it, I didn’t think they would go this far but, in the end, I am not really all that surprised.

  • Kevin Ray

Yeah, it occurred to me when InsideXbox disappeared from the dash that there is nothing now but adds…….NOTHING but buy-able and/or rent-able merchandising or things related to spending OR apps (MSN IGN Today etc.) that have ridiculous amounts of adds tacked on before actual content begins.
    It’s Minority Report….it’s F*****g MINORITY REPORT people!
What are we paying for exactly? Where does our money go? Where’s the added value for us USERS rather than for MS?

  • Roger

Hugely disappointed by this, I wonder if they killed it because of Germany’s recent ruling against Microsoft ( Xbox ) in the Motorola H.264 video codec thing. I hope they find another way to bring it back, I actually enjoyed watching gameplay from the various games, and the achievement help. Definitely persuaded me to buy a lot of games I would have never tried.

  • Aaron

wow now i regret renewing my gold subsription,,,wont happen again way to go microsoft cut your own throat, i prefer my money in my pocket anyways

  • Jadan

Its sad that it’s come to this. What does MS expect when all of their original content gets buried behind their redesign. You should have gotten your own tab! I think its sad that we pay good money for a ‘service’ that is nothing more than a candy covered advertisement, or as you say we will soon get, “third-party news”. So now we PAY for the same news we get anywhere else on the net and we are allowed to be spoon fed ads for on demand content and get the access to play with our friends online. Sounds like its us consumers that are getting screwed over. Maybe you should go to the Twit network and do it even better there with Leo and we can experience our ‘third-party news’ we all deserve. I’m sorry to see you go. I’ll miss your wonderful Inside scoops!

  • Kevin Ray

This may be a jumped up conspiracy thought, but did it ever occur to anyone that the ING app has the same built in ads that all the other apps have? Didn’t have those with most of the Inside xbox content.
That and it certainly costs less to supply third party “gaming news” apps than to create them in house, all the while selling more and more ad space = a win for MS’s bottom line.

    Just a thought.

  • Richard Sullivan

so xbox is going backwards to the level of the ps network?

  • Christopher Hamilton

I sure hope MS take care of Andy and Dan – it’s not easy to find such passionate individuals. My wife and I sure are going to miss watching their show.

Cue the tumbleweeds on XBL :/

  • Gabriel Castro

So explain to me why we’re being charged $60? Microsoft just keeps shutting services down and keeps filling the dash with advertisements.

  • Sean T

Insulted that the UK guys of InsideXbox had to wait for Major Nelson to announce it on his precious blog in US time and keep them waiting for the confirmation of the axing of the content

Its now trending on UK Twitter, the UK gaming media and a lot of users who have been vocal since the news was announced about the US Inside Xbox, are calling out for a full explanation of why

I want to to know where the money in my subscription is going, Xbox has always had 3rd part content along with its own, now its saving money, putting people out of jobs and selling advertising space on our dashboards exactly what benefit is it to us as customers?

    Marketplace content isnt cheaper

Subscription cost is still the same

So where is all this extra money going then….doubt we will be told….Major Nelson, you handled this appallingly, wont be listening to your podcast any longer either

    • Jonah Falcon

Sean, console manufacturers worldwide are losing money. This is cost-cutting.

      • Sean T

sshhhh the adults are talking thanks

thats right microsoft are losing money when they are selling space on the dashboard for ads. How much did all the subscription based companies pay to have their apps on the console. Not to mention i have to pay to play online and use these apps.

  • Sean T

The shift from community driven content to more “lets get it for free and sell some ad space for cars and McDonalds clearly is the evolution of the Xbox

Cant wait for E3 to showcase how the once former best games console with the best online platform in Xbox LIVE will be nothing more then a TV/Movie streaming box with Kinect still being marketed as the next big things despite having less main game releases then the Wii currently has

  • Sean T

When Decisions for a community are made by those not in the community then something is wrong with a Community driven ideology

  • Jimmy Vangestel

WTF!!!!!!!!! So out of the blue you decide to remove a great exclusive feature ????
Please tell me why I continue to pay for Gold? Because I’m beginning to wonder why!!

  • leebrownhill

Cant believe Microsoft have decided to get rid of Inside Xbox in the UK. I really believe MrPointyHead and Farrantula were a great asset to the service. I LOVED their shows.
Just doesnt make sense when you see the outpour of similar reactions to mine.
Please rethink what has happened and bring them back!

    • Sean T

interesting that the decision to axe first party content doesnt include the cancelling of the Major Nelson podcast??

      • Joris Springer

Because Major Nelson and his co-hosts are doing this in their free time. He is not getting paid for it,, he likes and wants to do this. This podcast is older than Inside Xbox and has been around from early in the old Xbox days! Larry is deep inside the community and your accusations against him are an insult to him, his listeners and all inside Xbox fans, he was part of it from the beginning so please, some respect for the man! If you even think that this podcast is officially part of Microsoft Games Studios then you better start listening to the shows instead of just ranting!

  • Simon Roughley

off to the shops then to buy a PS3, maybe Andy and Dan could sell there idea to sony (Inside Play Station)

  • Mattias Nilsson

    Boooo! Go to hell Microsoft!

  • Chris Posting

I’m letting my Gold subscription lapse. Sick iof the adverts, sick of
the tab dedicated to Rupert Murdoch’s Sky, sick of uninspiring sequels. I
loved all the British made content, as it was fresh and suited British
taste. This is final confirmation that the 360 is no longer for me. so
I’m off to play with my 3DS, hell it’s an honest bit of kit and i’ve had
more fun online with the Colors 3D community than I have had on the
Live community for years. Those early days of Halo and Project Gotham
were a blast. Bye for now.

  • Bradley

Major, you have some questions that deserve answers. Don’t pretend you don’t see these comments.

People who comment on your blog are getting more angry with the moves MS are pulling. And sneakly updating this on your blog hoping no one will see it, is exactly my point.
What exactly are we paying for eh Major? With ads being everywhere? You’re just shafting us for every single cent we’ve got, and that’s the truth.

OT, I see you failed to acknowledge my apology for my misunderstanding in your G+ hangout. Not surprised really.

  • Jason Sweby

Agree with the sentiments below; this was appallingly handled.

And evidently, “the team in Europe has been investigating what makes most sense for them and the Xbox LIVE community” doesn’t include actually listening to what the users wanted. There was even an online petition to keep Inside Xbox in Europe, for goodness sake.

Will Major Nelson and his colleagues read this and now understand the strength of feeling?

    • Bradley

Unfortunately no. He hasn’t benefited the community in any sort of way, shape or form. infact, I think he’s done more damage to it as he doesn’t seem to pay attention.

      • Sean T

He couldnt event be good enough to tweet this news, just added it to his original blog and hoped that the UK Xbox people on twitter would share the news…of which by the way, have known at the very least this morning GMT time but tweeted that they had to wait for the “US guy to decided on their employment” to announce it on his blog first

Interesting how little the Major interacts with people on his own blog, I dont expect him to acknowledge any of these comments either here, on twitter on his “first hand content” driven Podcast show

    • Owen Mcgarvey

nope…. these guys dont listen to no one…. their heads are so far up the bosses arses that they cant see thru the shit :)…. not that they even want to

  • mike p

its times like these you cant wait to switch to Sony.
