Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition

It’s official: Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has has broken all previous Xbox LIVE Arcade digital sales records, selling more than any other title in the first 24 hours on Xbox LIVE Arcade. I just looked at the leaderboards and there are over 400,000 people playing…so that will give you an idea at how well it is doing.

Congrats to 4J Studios, Mojang  and Microsoft Studios for all the great work.

Update Monday, May 14th
: In less than one week on the market, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has sold more than 1,000,000 units globally .

A few other fun facts about Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition that I though you’d like:

  • Multiplayer sessions: 4M
  • Total Multiplayer gaming hours: 2.4M

Very good news indeed! Hopefully this makes sure that we get our updates swiftly, since being stuck back at beta 1.6.6 is horrifying right now :( I love the game, but such basic things that we take for granted are missing.

    • http://twitter.com/mando6599 mando6599

What are we missing exactly? I’ve never played Minecraft before this version.

  • http://twitter.com/Protege420 Protege

damn, liked trials holding the crown. ah well that is what records are for to break. congrats

    • EvanTheGamer

They had that record for three weeks, so I think that’s still pretty awesome. And it was inevitable that Minecraft would break Trials Evolution’s record as soon as it got released.

      • http://twitter.com/inediblechicken Inedible Chicken

It shows how popular XBLA is. Trials Evolution comes out and sets a record, Minecraft then breaks that record. Lots of money to be made in XBLA right now.

        • EvanTheGamer

True that, true that! I say…keep ‘em coming!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nick-Rogers/1851888849 Nick Rogers

Lol, no clue who’s down-voting you, you aren’t complaining or anything. In fact you even said “congrats”. Good job on the maturity, sad I can’t say the same about other people here.

  • tabicat

Will Microsoft be giving refunds to everyone who was expecting to do split-screen on non-HDTV TVs? http://kotaku.com/5909259/some-misled-xbox-minecraft-buyers-unable-to-get-refunds

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PGXCAL5WSD62RGZVD3IOACKSZY mikey

HA you make me laugh, you expect a refund from M$?

    • http://twitter.com/Newdeck Gerard Newdeck

Why would you do that to yourself? I can still roll standard def if I have to but splitscreen too? nah

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nick-Rogers/1851888849 Nick Rogers

If you had looked at a single review before buying it you’d know that.

    • AOClaus

Why are you asking for a refund from MS? How about you ask for a refund from notch, you know, the dude who made the game…

  • http://twitter.com/Darius_Dan Marcelo Lima Souza

Congrats Mojang, Notch and Microsoft Studios. Now GO MAKE SOME UPDATES because we want to be at least close to the PC version’s features.

    • Avikumar Patel

I agree. I’d very much like some of the updates PC users have had by now.

  • http://twitter.com/ghostspectrum Terrence

    Nice nice!

  • http://twitter.com/Matt_R_Steele Matthew Steele

I’m waiting for the updates to roll out. Forgot how much has changed since 1.6!

  • EvanTheGamer

    Damn, nice! Congrats!

I was able to score a free copy of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition via Ratpr’s new rewards system this morning. Freakin’ awesome!

    • http://twitter.com/boe2BE Boe2

There is something really, really wrong with the voting system. How this comment and the comments below get hidden is a mystery.

      • EvanTheGamer

Yeah, exactly. I was only stating the fact that I got a free copy via Raptr’s rewards system, that’s all. I was not bragging, or at least that wasn’t my intention.

Also, I do not like the new Disque system at all. I liked the old way of “liking” comments.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PGXCAL5WSD62RGZVD3IOACKSZY mikey

    this game blows chunks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/DannyBowen Danny Bowen

      It actually saves chunks.

  • MilkyTee

It became profitable after an hour according to Notch. Not bad for a port that was in development for over a year.

Hopefully sales like these will convince other developers that XBLA is a great platform to launch a game if you do it right.

  • ElektroDragon

My god, I still can’t see why. What a fad. Fez should be breaking digital records, not an ugly, glorified Lego set.

    • ElektroDragon

Clearly, I just don’t “get” it. I’m not cool or hip enough, apparently.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nick-Rogers/1851888849 Nick Rogers

No, you don’t get it because you refuse to get it.

You know why Legos are popular? That’s why Minecraft is popular. It’s not an “Overglorified Lego Set”, it’s a Lego set with a more complex feature list.

        • ElektroDragon

So in other words, this “game” requires a lot of hard work building things for no apparent reason than the fun of building/modding. Am I right? I guess I’m too lazy.

          • http://twitter.com/F0REM4N Jay Foreman

Wrong again, the fun to many people is trying to survive a world with constant threat by building weapons, tools, and shelter. An alternative way to play would be creative mode in which you can build whatever you want with zero work, all the blocks are given to you.

It’s fine if you don’t care for the concept, but it’s no invalid just because you are ”
            not cool or hip enough”

          • http://twitter.com/beachman707 Joe Mo

It’s a survival adventure game as well.

Try the PC version and set it on “creative” mode if you don’t want all that “hard work”.

The PC version also has a lot of online servers with different mods that change the game pretty dramatically.

          • http://engadgetsucks.wordpress.com/ Don’t Really Care

This shouldn’t be down-voted, you finally figured out why this game isn’t for you.

        • The Dukenator

Minecraft was inspired by Infiniminer, not Legos.

      • http://www.facebook.com/DannyBowen Danny Bowen

…or Smart enough, apparently. You are, however, cool enough to post about how you don’t like it for no apparent reason. You are hip with the troll community, clearly.

    • http://twitter.com/Superman64 Some Guy

Minecraft has been around for a few years now, and it’s still popular. You should probably look up what the word fad means.

Also, you’re getting on Minecraft’s case about it’s graphics? But then you praise Fez? They both use retro art styles.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephan-Tenspel/578534292 Stephan Tenspel

So give us inside xbox mus and uk back. You guys got enough money

  • ElektroDragon

Get ready for more 1600 point software now, folks.

    • Iamdanight90

True that bro Microsoft will see that people are sheep and start charging 20 bucks for every dumb game. Thank you but I’m out for the next gen I’m going to Sony’s tent

  • http://twitter.com/rdz_elf Andrew Giusto

kinda sad to hear that you need a HDTV for split screen :-(

    • ungeheier

With how cheap HDTV’s are these days, I have no sympathy for those who complain about SD TV support. Next time you want to buy 3 disc-based games, dont. Save the money and buy a cheap HDTV. And don’t even attempt to go the ‘but i want better’ route.

I want a ‘lamborghini’ so I guess I just wont drive anywhere for a few years until I can purchase one? No. I buy what I can now and use it, and in the mean time save for something nicer.

I saw the price for HDTV’s that are under $150 just this week.

      *so confused*

      • http://twitter.com/caveman32345 Zack Wood

the cheap ones come with problems though (hello input delay…). and as long as the 360 ships with an sdtv cable, they should support it!

        • ungeheier

          And that’s problem #1. It shouldn’t ship with sdtv cables. It’s 2012 now…

  • http://twitter.com/caveman32345 Zack Wood

nice, its an awesome game! still cant get over the tiny map though. any word yet if it will be enlarged in an update? (at least for single player only, if split screen is the cause for the limitations)

    • Russell Gorall

      Ten dollar DLC, sir.

  • Luciano Golino

    it prints money!

    • http://twitter.com/seekul Luke Es | sE ekuL

      It crafts voxelbucks!

  • Matthew Nicholls

Let’s hope we get free DLC, but I very much doubt that.

    • http://twitter.com/sheep_steve SteveSheep

Actually there is no DLC Notch (owner of mojang) believes minecraft should be constantly updated (for free) because “A game is never finished. Just abandoned. “

      • Iamdanight90

M$ is going to make them charge us for it guess will never see another ten or 15 dollar game after min craft everyone will try to cash in

  • http://twitter.com/ThirtyTurtle Chris

Not surprising. Just glad the 4 billion price tag that was on it yesterday morning wasn’t the final price, lmao. Everyone thought $20 was bad, then everyone saw that 4 billion Microsoft Points….jaw drops. lol

  • Quaranj

I knew that this would happen. Congratulations Mojang! I called it though, people have *ZERO* problems ponying up 1600 MSP for a highly anticipated title. Those of you waiting for a sale, I hope you wait a LONG time.

    • Russell Gorall

      Four months?

    • Iamdanight90

Dude this damn feed is getting spammed with the censoring our comments wtf

    • dieFANBOYdie

I have no issues paying 1600 pts for Minecraft, first and foremost.

But in regards to ‘waiting a long time’… and? Yeah? So? Am I supposed to feel bad because some people pay $60 – $90 to play a game on day one and I pay half that by waiting a ‘long time’? What a completely moronic sense of pride you have.

      • http://engadgetsucks.wordpress.com/ Don’t Really Care

Downvotes from people ashamed of truth. Take a game like New Vegas. Heck, New Vegas is better NOW than it was on day one. And cheaper.

Then, take a game like Dead Island. Anyone paying $60 for that piece of garbage on day one is a sucker.

You impatient types think there’s something magical about playing the game on the day of release… unless its an online game, you’re only patting yourself on the back.

  • http://twitter.com/shenryo Ezra Ramos

Say hello to more 1600 point games.

    • http://twitter.com/DarkNightRJ RJ Mansfield

Yes because that’s such a ripoff when the PC version costs almost $30

    • http://twitter.com/beachman707 Joe Mo

$20 for a game that you will spend hours and hours on is not bad at all.

I’ve bought blu-rays for $25 over a year ago that I’ve only watched two or three times (so about 6 hours total).

  • Jordan Mcdonald

Wtf.. who’s voting down every comment?!

    • Iamdanight90

It’s a conspiracy they are censoring us man

  • CyberSkull

Yeah, I’m waiting for it to go on sale.

    • Iamdanight90

(Italian voice) forget about it !!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/ian4green Ian Musgrove

Congrats guys, really well done, and you really deserve it, great game, really enjoying it, now hurry up with the dlc to make us up to date with the pc versions LOL.

  • Russell Gorall

I couldn’t tell the difference between it and a three dollar Indie game.

    • http://twitter.com/sheep_steve SteveSheep

You have not played it yet than.

  • Russell Gorall

Everybody get on the Internet and downvote everyone. Nothing more indie than huge corporations creating users to flood the message boards!!!

    Bro Team!

  • http://www.slimgamer.com/ SlimGamer

Not too surprising considering how successful it was on PC, but still nice to see digital sales thriving!

  • http://twitter.com/korahn Eric Starr

I hope this doesn’t make other arcade title publishers think that 1600 points is a “normal” price.Haven’t bought Minecraft yet, but I’ll be doing that this week.

  • Z4M0

    @Major Nelson

you should check who’s downvoting all comments, your blog is being seriously trolled.

Congrats to devs; hope others think twice and bring here competition’s exclusives… yet wouldn’t want that devs start to think 1600 everything is the way to go

    • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

Thx…I’ll take a look and see what’s going on.

  • http://MakeCash10.com/ Liezzel De Jose

what Glenn said I am taken by surprise that you can make $5217 in four weeks on the internet. have you seen this webpage

(ĊľÏćǩ ÖŊ Ṁŷ ńāṁė Ḟǿŕ ťħè ĽīńĶ)

  • http://twitter.com/mando6599 mando6599

This is such a fun game! I’d never played the PC version, but thanks to MS I can now see exactly why this game is so popular! Congrats Mojang, 4J Studios, and Microsoft!

  • http://twitter.com/CaptNink Chris Ninkovich

My six-year old and I played all weekend. We love it!

  • Ryan Lovatt

Brill game was playing it all night, would love some updates though we are a little far behind the PC version

  • Hugoku

Still need to try this one. See what all the fuss is about.

  • http://twitter.com/Navarin Jim E. Rustler

Not a big fan to be honest, every time I play it I just get bored really quickly. Well, if I don’t run into a game-freezing glitch first!
Going out to get stuff to build with just seems like such a chore! But apparently an infinite-resource “Creative Mode” is a planned update.

But I can see why so many people do like it at least. I’m just glad I got a code for it, would never have paid that much.

    • The Dukenator

Creative mode came out in beta 1.8. From what I’ve seen, the current version is beta 1.6.6.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1848874188 Sandor Rendeczky

20 dollars for 1024×1024? Are you kidding me? You do all realize the PC version is 8x the size of Planet Earth, right?

    Talk about lazy developement.

    • The Dukenator

Not quite. My PC map is about that size, a bit bigger.
Large maps cause lag, chunk issues unlike smaller maps.

  • http://engadgetsucks.wordpress.com/ Don’t Really Care

    You repeated some items.

Overall, pretty much MC for 360 is for people that never played the PC version and will never get around to playing the PC version. I don’t get why, if you have all that for PC, you would want to play the 360 edition?

On the flip side, people who are being introduced to the game via 360, are not going to miss what they don’t know about.
