A letter from Marc Whitten (upcoming features and more!)

Marc asked me to share the following letter with you. Some great news for Xbox 360 owners!

****************************

Dear Xbox LIVE Members,

I’m really excited about what we unveiled today at E3 and I hope you are also. We announced things that you expect us to deliver, like a great blockbuster game lineup and more TV, sports, movies and music. And we also unveiled new features like Internet Explorer for Xbox and Xbox SmartGlass, which will give you new and exciting ways to enjoy TV, movies, sports, games, web and music across the devices you already own.

Thanks to Xbox LIVE members like you we’re redefining the future of the living room, and I want to take this opportunity to share a more detailed look at what’s in store for entertainment on Xbox.

· International Expansion of Kinect Voice Control and Search. We are deeply committed to bringing the services and entertainment that people love on Xbox LIVE to our members around the world. This year, we are expanding our voice search capabilities to 12 new countries and we are bringing more entertainment applications than ever to more countries on Xbox LIVE. We’ve also made it easier to connect to our global Xbox LIVE service on Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox 360 in English, French, Spanish and Chinese.

· Xbox SmartGlass. This is a brand new Xbox innovation that makes your entertainment smarter, more interactive and more fun – across the devices you already own. It makes your tablet or your phone more intuitive, so if you are watching a movie or playing a game on Xbox 360, relevant content will automatically appear on your SmartGlass device. Imagine having the ability to pick your plays from your tablet instead of the TV screen during an intense game of “Madden,” keeping your next move a surprise to your opponent. Imagine meeting up with a boss in “Ascend” and seeing all the necessary details appear on your phone to help defeat it. Or, turn your favorite tablet or phone into a great remote control for your Xbox console. We’re excited to make all this possible for you and more.

· Internet Explorer for Xbox. This is something you’ve been asking for, and we waited until we could deliver a web browser experience truly optimized for the TV. You’ll be able to easily find and view the internet content you crave on the best screen in the house. And, with the power of Kinect and Xbox SmartGlass, you’ll able to navigate websites with any device or the sound of your voice.

· Favorites. This is another request we’ve heard frequently. Favorites allows you to personalize the dashboard by saving your movies, TV, games, music and the web right to the home screen in the dashboard. Favorites will make it easier and faster than ever to get to your favorite content on Xbox and Xbox LIVE.

· Xbox on Windows 8 and Windows Phone. Xbox is the premium entertainment experience for video, music, and games on your Xbox 360, on Windows 8 and on Windows Phone. And of course our LIVE service makes it even easier to share, discover, play and more with all of your content.

  • Xbox Music will bring you a world-class music library and great new ways to enjoy, share and discover new music across all of your Windows devices.
  • Xbox Games makes your experience with the console even better. You’ll have access to your avatar, recent games and leaderboards, and connections to your friends, giving you anywhere access to things you love about Xbox on the console. You can even purchase Xbox 360 games from anywhere and have them ready for download the moment you turn on your console.
  • Xbox Video provides you access to the video marketplace, making it easy to browse and search for TV episodes and movies. You can see your videos in your personal collection and even cue the TV show or movie up on your Xbox 360.

· New Search Features. Last year, we brought you the ability to search for your favorite movie, TV show, or actor with your voice. This year, we’re taking it one step further and bringing you the ability to search for your favorite genre. Now, you’ll be able to say “Xbox, Bing comedy,” to quickly find movies and TV shows across your entertainment apps. Not only can you search for your favorite type of content, but we’re also extending Bing voice search to include content in the YouTube app. The best viral videos will now be discoverable in your search results, all with the sound of your voice.

· Performance Improvements. We continue to invest in improving the performance of the Xbox dashboard. Whether you’re getting in and out of entertainment applications, browsing the games library or navigating large entertainment catalogs, we are working to make these experiences quick and seamless.

· Summer of Arcade. Each year Summer of Arcade delivers the most anticipated downloadable games of the season, and this year is no exception. With five back-to-back weeks of unparalleled releases, the fifth annual Summer of Arcade includes:

  • “Deadlight” (Tequila Works/Microsoft Studios). “Deadlight” is a puzzle platformer, where the player must take advantage of the main character’s agility to solve obstacles, and dodge zombies, manipulating the many interactive elements of the scenery. With more walking corpses than bullets, the feeling of danger is constant.
  • “Dust: An Elysian Tail” (Humble Hearts/Microsoft Studios). As the mysterious warrior, Dust, your action-packed journey will take you from peaceful glades to snowy mountaintops and beyond. Battle dozens of enemies at once with an easy-to-learn, difficult-to-master combat system, and uncover the story of an ancient civilization on the brink of extinction as you fight to uncover your own past in a gorgeous hand-painted world.
  • “Hybrid” (5TH Cell/5TH Cell). “Hybrid” is a pioneering third person shooter set in the near future, where global conflict exists between a species known as the Variant and a rebel human faction known as the Paladins. 5TH Cell strives to give players a completely new gameplay experience never seen before in the genre.
  • “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD” (Robomodo/Activision). “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD” takes the best elements of the classic “THPS” games and gives them a fresh update to create an all new skateboarding experience. Tapping into fans’ muscle memories, and combining sharp visuals with the best controls ever in a Tony Hawk game, the feel is cutting edge yet timeless.
  • “Wreckateer” (Iron Galaxy/Microsoft Studios). “Wreckateer” uses Kinect to put you in control of a massive castle-wrecking ballista. With the help of Wreck and Tinker, travel the land and destroy 60 castles using six magical projectiles, and explore the infinite ways you can wreak havoc with “Wreckateer’s” fully-dynamic destruction.

· Xbox LIVE Tournaments. We are working with Virgin Gaming to launch a new tournament service on Xbox LIVE, later this year. This new entertainment app will allow players to choose from a wide variety of free-to-play or paid-entry tournaments and head-to-head matches, for top titles from leading publishers. Xbox LIVE Tournaments, powered by Virgin Gaming, makes tournaments easy to join, fun and accessible to all types of gamers.

This year, we’re delivering the best in entertainment from Xbox. We’re bringing you more premium games, TV, movies, sports, web and music, enjoyed in unique ways that only Xbox can deliver. We’re making the entertainment experience complete with more ways than ever to discover and engage with all your favorite content across devices. Our mission is to make Xbox an amazing place for all of your entertainment – anytime, on any device. Keep playing, sharing, watching and pushing us – it’s only getting better from here.

See you on Xbox,

Marc Whitten

Internet Explorer? Is that a JOKE? I’d rather have a SAFE browser like Firefox…-_-

    • docalien

You expected a different browser on a MS platform? Is that a joke?

    • http://www.facebook.com/joesiegler Joe Siegler

It better come bundled with Firewall for Xbox.

      • Alexander Atkin

The only purpose of a firewall is to block access to LAN servers from the WAN side.

As the Xbox is purely a client (apart from gaming servers) and so doesn’t host any such services, it doesn’t need one. Otherwise it would already have been a terribly bad idea to put an Xbox in the DMZ, which plenty of people do.

    • http://twitter.com/JayJayTG Jay Gilliham

Someone else who is living in the past. IE9/10 is an amazing browser, proves how MS can evolve, adapt and in some cases revolutionise, as with Windows 8 and Windows Phone (oh and let not forget the number 1 selling console worldwide – the Xbox ;))

    • bjellefaen

Have you even tried IE lately? MS is serious about making a good browser. I hate IE6 and largely IE7 more than most, being a web developer. But the latest one is pretty damn good. I still don’t use it for my standard browser, but at least don’t diss it without knowing what you are talking about.

      • http://twitter.com/Jeedai_Infidel shawn coomes

Biased haters actually doing research on the thing they’re dissing, is that even possible?

        • http://www.facebook.com/tyllerr Tyler Beckner

Hater? Excuse me for using BETTER programs to SAFELY surf the web. No one likes that security hole browser. I’d rather have a clean PC. Funny how Internet Explorer continues to allow driveby infections to still happen yet Firefox/Chrome don’t. :)

    • http://twitter.com/FanaticFamily Fanatic Family

LOL, it’s not that IE for XBOX will be able to get to the kernel, as opposed to most consumer-PC’s out there. And tell me, what’s wrong being able to browse the internet on a quad-HD television from the comfort of your chair?

  • Dr4gOnsFuRy

Absolutely poor E3. Everything was about Kinect, nobody cares about Kinect, give us more games, that’s what a console is for.

    • http://twitter.com/JayJayTG Jay Gilliham

You get games all year every year. You are never going to run out of top quality games on the Xbox so dont complain it werent shown at a press conference. Why show just games and be stuck in the past when you could show so blockbusters and great new innovations in technology. If you dont show new tech you left behind and other companies take over – just look whats happened to PC gaming. Games are always coming and the best will be on the Xbox like every year.

      • Dr4gOnsFuRy

An Xbox is about gaming, that’s what I bought it for. I can easily do all the media stuff on my PC, the Xbox just makes it more convenient for others, I don’t use it as a media center though.

        • http://twitter.com/JayJayTG Jay Gilliham

Well sorry to burst your bubble but the Xbox branding isnt just games anymore it the central hub for ALL entertainment in your homes. You speak as if games are not a big part of Xbox anymore, when they get all the top releases and get many exclusives. Whats the problem its only a press conference??? Your games are still coming!

          • Dr4gOnsFuRy

The main purpose of the Xbox is games, I expect a good variety of games to be unveiled. It’s like they are neglecting the gaming side of things and focusing their time on Kinect which is stupid. All the tech stuff is just bonus but the concentration should be on more games, more exclusives especially.

          • Flawless

            “many exclusives” lmfao

            sure.

          • Volitar Prime

If MS wants Xbox to be the central hub for all entertainment in my house then they need to do a better job. 720p video, 2.0 sound, and washed out colors is not good enough.

          • Rob adams

my Xbox = 1080p, 5.1 sound and fantastic viewing experience. Try buying a new TV

          • Volitar Prime

My Xbox and TV are also 1080p but these video apps are only 720p with stereo 2 channel sound (and many still have incorrect black level which is a bug which has been fixed for some of them). Your Xbox is scaling the 720p (or lower) video up to 1080p to output to your TV. The only exception (that I know of) is the MS Zune Video Marketplace (or whatever they are calling it now that the Zune name is going away).

      • Russell Gorall

So, you would rather have MS invest in COD DLC than get a shot to play something like Last of Us? Watch the Last of Us demo footage. Instead of putting money into something like that MS is paying possibly hundreds of millions to get COD DLC early.

No biggie for me, I can play that stuff on Playstation. I just don’t like the Dualshock 3 controller.

    • Mik3t

Halo4, SplinterCell, Tomb Raider, Call of duty none of which are kinect games

      • Dr4gOnsFuRy

I know I said “everything was about Kinect” but I didn’t mean it literally, I am saying there was more stuff about Kinect than games being shown, or stuff to do with Kinect, or which games will support Kinect.
I missed the showing of Halo 4 and Splinter Cell. Tomb Raider looked really good, Call of Duty was a joke, it’s always been a joke. The new Resident Evil which I’ve been waiting for looked bad, another Call of Duty type game with big explosions and over the top set pieces, stupid imo.

        • Adam Bellamy

What were you expecting? Look to third parties for more games that interest you.

      • http://twitter.com/Inaba_kun Inaba-kun

All of those are sequels. I’d sooner see something original.

        • Rob adams

Can’t really blame MS for that, have a chat with the developers not putting these games together?!?

      • Russell Gorall

Sequels to basically yearly franchises and third party games that MS shows because they don’t really have anything to talk about. You might as well put Gears up there, too.

If MS wasn’t so desperate for any sort of retail first party titles, you wouldn’t see Halo, Gears or Forza up this year. When you keep pushing games out every year, they simply resemble yearly products. Speaking of yearly products, you can play Madden on 360 this year. Hurray.

      • David

Yeah, and only Halo 4 is a 360 exclusive of the ones you mentioned.

  • http://twitter.com/ResetReflect Rob Kent

Only thing that looks good is summer of arcade. 3/5 titles looks amazing! (deadlight, Dust, hybrid)

  • http://www.facebook.com/joris.springer Joris Springer

Will the Netherlands finally be getting Voice Support now? I hope so. Curious about Dust and Wreckateer and Hybrid though :D. Bring on the summer I would say :).

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZXX53YQRIJLZZXZQOYWG4L4IIU nico

looks like its still not for NL, only: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, France, Italia Espania, Ireland,
Japan, Australia, Brasil, Mexico and Newzealand

      • http://www.facebook.com/joris.springer Joris Springer

That is pretty lame, I mean, Schweiz = German, Italian and French, Spanish was already supported in a way and so were Ireland, New Zealand and Mexico, so most of the update of the languages is just a dud :(, quite a big fail when it comes to language support I would say :(. Pity.

  • http://twitter.com/SamboTaylor Sam Taylor

I don’t think I have ever seen a more useless thing than smartglass…

    • bjellefaen

Forgot about the Kinect already? :)

    • http://twitter.com/Jeedai_Infidel shawn coomes

Really? Choosing plays on Madden with your phone/tablet so that split-screen players can’t sneak a peek doesn’t sound useful? Really?

    • DarkNightRJ

It’s not like you have to buy anything extra.

      • Volitar Prime

I would have to buy a compatible smart phone or tablet. And are we sure that we won’t have to pay for the app?

        • DarkNightRJ

True, you do need a smartphone or tablet but I’m more saying they don’t make you buy some xbox tablet that can’t be used for anything else.

  • tabicat

The moment that I see an advertisement on my iPod because of SmartGlass is the instant that I delete SmartGlass from my iPod. Whenever I hear corporate doublespeak like “relevant content”, I get very suspicious.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dale.newcomb Dale Newcomb Jr

1 vs. 100 was a great experience on Xbox Live and I was expecting that we would have had one or more “live game show” titles by now that took the results of this experiment and improved upon it. Where has all of that gone? I thought it was a great example of how the Xbox 360 can draw in traditional non-gamers by adding a new level of interactivity to a tried and true classic. Were the sponsors just not buying into it? Bringing ESPN, IE, Video/Music on Demand, etc. are all cool, but those are things we already have, just in a nice new integrated package. It would be nice to have more things that you don’t already have elsewhere, and especially things that you *couldn’t* do before.

    • ungeheier

      Major, Where’s 1 vs 100?

      • Dr4gOnsFuRy

They scrapped it and it’s not coming back, unfortunately.

        • ungeheier

I know… The day it went away, the excitement I had with turning my 360 on daily died.

          • http://twitter.com/BubBobz neil

same here, xbox 360 hardly touched since 1vs100 died – and i know many who feel the same way. would pay money for a good replacement

          • Rob adams

            Best game ever!!!

  • http://twitter.com/FanaticFamily Fanatic Family

Can Microsoft finally put its humongous back into its network and make sure more & more streaming content (free and paid) will be available outside the USA? Europe & Asia are quite “forgotten” when it comes to payable on-demand content. Loving the IE announcement & integration with Windows 8; already got Server 2012 domain with 3 Win8-VHD’s humming like a litter of well-fed kittens!

  • http://carlospache.co/ Carlos Pacheco

I won’t say anything about the new features which are ok for the masses but not to the gamer which is what has helped grown the xbox brand to what it is today.

There was once a time when Microsoft didn’t pay attention to the Xbox much which left it freedom to be adventurous and try new things and experiment, I feel that this time is over.

I understand now that the real Microsoft has officially taken over the Xbox which makes sense from a business perspective. Microsoft messed up web dominance with IE, they messed up Windows so now its going to use its only division that people actually like.

This means concentrating on the mass and letting go of the gamers and the games. In terms of titles, all I saw from the press briefing was sequels/prequels with the exception of Ascend the God of War clone and some hardly noticeable Kinect games that even I as a older more casual gamer have zero interest in.

What Microsoft seems to have forgotten is the reason why it has Halo, Gears of War & Forza and that’s because there was once a time when it took risks by challenging the status quo by trying to create better games and experiences. Obviously some didn’t work but the ones that did really paid off like the aforementioned games.

Nothing’s wrong with having a baseline of “safe” game titles but how are you advancing the video games industry by throwing sequel after sequel after prequel?

Is there really any innovation left from within Microsoft Games?

I fear that this is what happens when a game company gets on top. It gets lazy, it forgets what got it there and it plays it safe.

    • EndrzGame

You’ve pretty much summed up how I think about the situation as well. While I think MS is going in a good direction with all the entertainment offerings, I don’t think that I’ll be along for the ride with them much longer. It’s clear that the games are only part of their plan now.
I’ve been playing on my PC more and more because not just MS but all of the big 3 just don’t seem to have what I’m looking for in interactive entertainment.
I’ve enjoyed the time that I’ve spent with them and don’t feel cheated in any way. It’s just that MS is going in a different direction now. After this generation, (unless something extraordinary is revealed), I won’t be buying anymore consoles.

    • Russell Gorall

The safe word is exactly what MS seems to be doing. If they had their way they wouldn’t have to launch a new console until 2017, by that time they will be the console of all the franchises that are already losing steam and early DLC title holder.

The funniest part of the show is when the guy comes out to talk about three games and they seem to all be Arcade titles, and one is names “Lococycle”. Very awkward to watch.

      • Hugoku

Why a game being Arcade title is a bad thing?
Seriously, i’ve been more excited by XBLA and PSN releases than retail ones lately.

        • Russell Gorall

I don’t know, would you rather have a company back a game like Skyrim or an Arcade RPG? Think about it. It is better than nothing, I just thought it was funny that was what they were bringing to the table as far as any new IP’s. Besides that, it was Halo, Forza and Gears.

When you expect little, you get little.

          • QuixoticRocket

Why does it have to be one or the other? Can’t we have both big titles and XBLA titles? They both serve slightly different purposes and I think the console is better with both options being strong.

          • Russell Gorall

Exactly my point. Why can’t we have both? That is one of the questions customers have been asking MS, their answer continues to be early DLC for games like Call of Duty and Skyrim and Arcade titles.

I would love to see Microsoft back something first party along the lines of what Ubisoft and Naughty Dog are doing. The money is there, MS is being told the same thing every year by their customers. Give your core audience something to be excited about that isn’t basically a yearly Halo, Forza or Gears franchise.

      • http://twitter.com/winningguy Nelson Ocampo

I was happy to see Microsoft giving some love to XBLA developers.

The innovation is coming from the smaller studios. The risks are being taken with smaller budgets. Showing them support is a good thing.

        • Russell Gorall

In other words they are taking very small risks. I guess I find that hard to get super-excited about.

Meh. Last of Us was cool, but the future is really more about Lococycle. I just wasn’t seeing how awesome this all is.

    • http://twitter.com/jimbobk77 james kendrick

Does anyone ( including Major himself ) read our feedback ?
We are NOT MS haters, we all love this console of yours and simply dont undestand why you have changed direction.
All i saw from E3 was a load of kinect junk, 3 exclusive ( NOT ) XBLA titles and a load of USELESS rubbish about smartglass etc ? honestly hands up who cares about that ?
More or less just a little bit better than last years E3 i think.
When was the last time MS held a press conference that made you go ” WOW ” ?
I have been a gold subscriber for 5 years now, more and more i serioulsy dont see what i get over silver members for the money.
considering the ammount of unhappy people you seem to be pushing aside i think you should take this as a very serious warning.
Whats thats phrase again ? oh yes
DONT BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU !

      • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

I read all the comments and do share the common themes with the right people.

        • Russell Gorall

It seems like you get on here and post twice about nothing in the comments section.

One common theme seems to be people pointing out all the stuff that Playstation Plus is giving away and what Microsoft is going to do to entitled Gold members like myself.

Are you getting back to an answer for this? As I have pointed out, you should drop your podcast and spend that time working with the community, and that doesn’t mean posting on Twitter about who you are schmoozing with. You have more free time now with all the Inside Xbox stuff dropped.

          Cheers and happy gaming.

          • QuixoticRocket

“One common theme seems to be people pointing out all the stuff that Playstation Plus is giving away…”
            Like users’ passwords *ahem* =P

          • Russell Gorall

            Nice.

I don’t know, I got two free retail games out of the PSN hack last year. I wish it was hacked again.

          • http://twitter.com/hekate180 Emma (Hekate180)

having interacted with Larry via email and messages in the past I can certainly tell you the guy takes it on board and feeds it up the chain.

          • http://twitter.com/hekate180 Emma (Hekate180)

I mean heck when you mail a guy like major and get a contact from notwen by post you know its being heard, to remail him and for him to remember you in person and ask about stuff you chatted about, take it from someone with first hand experience the gamers matter to him.

          • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

I do hear back from them. And in most cases I can’t share the results directly since they may be about future plans.

          • Russell Gorall

If you hear back from them, then what is their answer? Or is the answer something to do with double secret probation you can’t talk about?

Are there plans by MS for doing something like Plus is offering? Many consumers would like to know. Cheers.

          • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

As I said originally, most times I can’t share the results because they involve future plans. That’s all I can say. Email me Major at Xbox.com if you want to chat further.

          • Russell Gorall

            Thanks for your time, sir.

    • http://engadgetsucks.wordpress.com/ Don’t Really Care

If you go back 10 years and had been paying attention, all of the above is what both Sony and Microsoft had intended… this is what they’ve been building up to all this time.

    • http://www.facebook.com/brad.bowhall Brad Bowhall

I’m sure I will come across as a MS fanboy but I think I just see the big picture better.

Xbox is doing well selling to all the folks out there who are more casual gamer. This seems to piss all the core gamer off for some reason. MS is a business as a business they want to sell as many Xbox’s as possible.

They are not ignoring the core gamer just for the sake of it. There are a ton of games out there, maybe not that many new IPs but the Xbox is near the end of its life cycle, most are probably saving up the new IPs for the next generation. Which is probably what most of the first party companies are working on.

You want to have a good amount of games to release when the next console hits because as the core crowd loves to point out, they are who made the Xbox popular and will buy the next gen console first.

I am a hardcore gamer and by that I mean I play anything and everything and play it to completion. I am also 41 and I enjoy playing Kinect games as much as the regular games.

If you look at the profile for most so called gamers they tend to play one type of genre (usually FPS) its no wonder why they are always looking for new games, try playing some of the other games already available.

Kingdoms of Amular was a new IP, a great game, but failed to sell enough to survive, how odd!

Even if I don’t use everything the Xbox has someone out there might and I am at least glad that MS keeps offering new things to do on there box every year, most of which is included in Xbox live gold.

Instead of complaining about not getting the one or two new IPs you think you should have gotten go play one of the hundreds of games out there you never played and maybe you will find a new game to love.
      /end rant.

  • http://twitter.com/joboehl joboehl

Tks a lot Major. One thing is not clear for me from the announcement. This sentence: “This year, we are expanding our voice search capabilities to 12 new countries and we are bringing more entertainment applications than ever to more countries on Xbox LIVE” means that the 12 countries are receiving not only kinnect, but also the Video/Music marketplaces? Not sure about the other countries, but Brazil has no video/music so searching has very little effect for Brazil without those other features.

  • http://www.facebook.com/juan.moreno.56027 Juan Moreno

No big surprises, I don’t mind the
entertainment apps but too much time was wasted on them and third party games, at
least give an explanation to why forza, gears of war, and halo didn’t have some
sort of presentation just video the same with fable. Last year they knocked it
out of the park this year was just so disappointing. No explanation for dance
central 3 just a guessing game of what’s new. I love Xbox but I hate having to
rely on 4 franchises exclusives and a few arcade exclusives

  • metallicorphan

yeah sorry i was massively disappointed again with MS E3,a lot of games announced had either already been announced or were Multiplats…and Timed Exclusive DLC is not exciting, especially for games that are nearly a year away still(South Park and Tomb Raider)…i am guessing all those new channels (ESPN 24/7 for one)are still America only as well

Yawn…you take away the big names we already knew about (HALO 4 was off the hook bat shit crazy want it now level) and the very few new games, like Splinter’s Creed (because its just Sam Fisher going all Assassins Creed) the Briefing was poor, boring, so last year and basically…meh

Lets be honest here, who really, really cares enough to want to use their phone as a remote control for the Xbox?

Who really, needs a Kinect sensor to swear at the ref in Fifa?

Who really wants IE on their console, the browser barely works on a laptop or PC and Xbox.com doesnt even work with it

Who really bothers with Bing, not enough to give it ten mins of the briefing?

Oh and yeah great, as a Brit, thanks for even more US Sports that we dont know or will ever have interest in..but then, doubt the UK will even get those apps eh?

As for Kinect, come on seriously…give it up already, anyone who did buy it at launch have sold it or put it in storage, and no one without children under 7 will bother to buy one just because it will read the heart rate of you sitting on your butt on a sofa playing video games. Real people who want to keep fit, go to something that used to be called “the gym”

All in all, nothing inspiring, nothing motivational and nothing to say..ok MS I wont go looking for a better gaming experience elsewhere…..you failed, yet again…wow, you really have no idea what your community wants anymore do you?

  • http://twitter.com/GaussBb Bradley

What a load of crap this was. Nothing worth bragging about. 360 is dead.

What a load of c**p this was, nothing worth bragging about. 360 is dead.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JranZu Anthony Nichols

looking forward to tournaments, very curios about Glass…. Xbox Explorer, well it’s about time!

    • Dr4gOnsFuRy

The tournaments are pretty cool but it’s not new, the exact same service is already being run on Fifa 12, you can enter cash tournaments through the Virgin website.

  • http://twitter.com/suddenlyissoon Jason Lyon

In all my years of watching E3 I’ve never been so disappointed. This was just absolutely deplorable in terms of content. I remember a point when Xbox was about the games but that’s apparently gone now. The idea that, at E3, a big selling point is Bing & Internet Explorer…that’s horrid.

Not one single new AAA title that’s not a sequel. No excitement. No anything really. The highlight of the entire show was Summer of Arcade. That’s how far you’ve fallen.

  • TheJoker360

Another s##t and pathetic E3 from MS. The 360 is dead. Ditch Don Mattrick he is a wimp.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tykeover Thiago Ramos

Dont foret Switzerlad. Our live is about ZERO. Nothing suported here.

    • uss_liberty

At least you are getting Kinect voice support now.
We in Sweden doesn’t even get that.

But hey, Live is probably great if you live in the US. :)

  • Adinnieken

Major, are there any available specs regarding IE? Like is it based on IE9 or IE10? What screen resolutions are required/supported?

    • TheJoker360

Xbox will need a firewall and virus protection now.

      • Adinnieken

The only reason a firewall is required is to hide open ports from public networks. On Windows those are ports associated with Microsoft Networks authentication ports. Last I knew there were no modern exploits to HTML ports on any device.

Also, on the Xbox 360 there won’t be support for plug-ins, which would include ActiveX controls. So the possibility of a virus is seriously low. If the Xbox version of IE is roughly the same as the Metro IE version in Windows 8, then there will be no support for plug-ins or ActiveX controls.

    • http://twitter.com/toohats toohats

If it’s Windows 8 based, it is probably IE10.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Perry/1666125043 Jim Perry

What about the 100 person limit on the friends list… you know the reason, that Microsoft took down the Xbox LIVE portion for the original Xbox, so they could open up the 100 person limitation on Xbox LIVE… and the promised clan support? Also what about the more frequent updates to the dashboard. I thought we weren’t going to have to wait for the Fall and Spring updates to the dash anymore… and no word was given on a Spring update or a fall update for that matter.

100 person limit on Xbox Live Major Nelson? Any news on that?

    I didn’t think so.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Adanac/100001237455741 Joe Adanac

LOL. That was a theory invented by gamers to explain why original Xbox Live support was being taken down. In fact Microsoft simply said it was being discontinued for unspecified “improvements”. The reality is, Microsoft is cheap and didn’t want to pay for server space anymore, and wanted to force original Xbox users onto their new system. Xbox originals weren’t interfering with the 360 dashboard one bit, they were just interfering with Microsoft’s bottom line, and when it comes to a giant corporation, that’s the only thing they care about.

  • http://twitter.com/Navarin Jim E. Rustler

    Hey Marc this keynote sucked.

  • Russell Gorall

Playstation Plus is giving free games for subscribers, what free games are coming up Major?

    • Almageddon

      Don’t hold your breath.

  • http://twitter.com/TrashMKX Chris

Really WEAK E3 again. I’m quite disappointed in the exclusives dept. Halo 4 is a given, a few XBLA titles look cool….but other than that? POOR SHOW. Ending with COD? Really made them look quite. Sony had a pretty awesome show, a few great looking and fun exclusives. I’m glad I’m a game and own multiple consoles.

  • Almageddon

Summer of arcade is looking quite good, 3 out of the 5 I’m certainly interested in. I’m also happy to see they are trying to update the dashboard and make it usable.

However I still think that gold members should be excluded from the dashboard adverts! make it silver only. I’m not interested in a new car, I’m not interested in new wings, c’mon MS pack it in!

I also think they really should look at their competitors, seriously go take a look. (This is not a PS3 vs 360 troll either, its gone way past that these days)

PS+ is about $5 a month and the value is astonishing, for instance look at this month

They are getting 12 free games this month which are to include:

    Infamous 2
    Little Big Planet 2
    Saints Row 2
    Virtua Fighter 5
    Just Cause 2
    Choplifter HD
and 6 more to be announced! Come on seriously!

Before anyone jumps on the old “if you cancel your sub the games are gone’ argument then don’t. I play a game once and rarely play it again anyway because of the saturation of the games market, I have more games than I have time!

MS cancel the Gold subscription cost, then you can put all the adverts you want on the dashboard that will appeal to media center people then, bring in a premium paid service for true gamers who have supported the rise of this mighty empire to show them that you love them!

Seriously, show us some love because the majority of us are not feeling it right now!

    • Zael

I agree with you, i don’t know why people always bring the argument that if you cancel your sub its gone, it’s just like gold, you cancel your subscription your online is gold, and that’s it, just the online, doesn’t even give you anything free, but hey it gives you access to other stuff you can pay for ? haha.

For me Xbox was always my main console, everything i would get for xbox cause everything was there, but now I’m Seriously rethinking about all that, since every passing E3 i have hopes that xbox will be on top again and surprise us, but i guess that’s all in the past, one just have to look at E3 08 and see how Microsoft drove the crowd crazy vs these present years.

    • VegaDD

the ps3 is looking better by the day…i just want a games console.

      • Chris Huff

12 free game! I have been a live subscriber for 8 years! Somebody want to remind me why live is worth the money again cause I don’t see it? PSN and Steam both have way better deals.

        • Rob adams

I’ve also been a subscriber for 8 years and can name everything I’ve had for free:

Totem Ball (crappy xbox vision cam game that RROD’d my launch console
Hydrophobia (given to us free when xbox live crashed in a big way)
          Dorrito Crash Course
Boom boom rocket DLC (don’t have it anymore as the license didn’t transfer to my new console)
          A Bing Avatar T-Shirt
A pair of 2011 avatar sunglasses
A pair of St Patricks Day Sunglasses
A prop of Avatar speakers (for completing the Kinect sound test thingy)

Apart from online gaming I get nothing else for being a gold member not bad for £50 ($100) a year for gold membership!

Oh yeah I forgot, I also got gun stringer for free when I called Xbox and asked for free stuff!!

That said I wouldn’t change consoles but might consider going back to PC gaming!

  • http://www.facebook.com/bryce.knight.58 Bryce Knight

WHAT? Dust is finally coming out? OH HAPPY DAY!

  • http://twitter.com/Byyys Byyys

Bring back 1v100 or some similar arcade game, who wants to be a millionaire would be a great title over live with multiable users, increase the 100 friends limit, put Y as space when searching threw apps (it works for bing, why not apps… its soo annoying going to the end of a-Z to space) Microsoft boasts about being the best this and how it can only get better.. yeah right!. its the simple things that can make the xbox360 experience better but microsoft never tend to listen.. they just hope for the best, or just dont bother at all until its well basiclly too little too late!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Adanac/100001237455741 Joe Adanac

Are you dense Microsoft? Don’t you realize what happened to the Wii’s sales after Nintendo ignored and shrugged off the hardcore market? The same thing’s going to happen to your next system. Why would anyone invest in a non-hardcore system next gen?

  • http://twitter.com/boe2BE Boe2

A bit of a hit and miss this editions. Some predictions became painfully true (mostly shooters and kinect), some cliches became painfully true too (first console for dlc, yaaaay -_-).
The announced XBLA games seem interesting, it’s a shame we didn’t get to see much of them. SmartGlass looks fun (and the multiplatform part makes it extra nice), but who will use it once the novelty has worn off? I can’t imagine myself gaming with a tablet in my lap. Then again, it’s a big step forward from what Nintendo is trying to accomplish.

  • http://twitter.com/UGSeba Sebastián Undurraga

MajorNelson, in Chile we paid dearly for the Gold service and offer a service category disgusting, when will the day you start working and worry about other regions and not just the U.S., hopefully to achieve justify the premium you give XBOX LIVE that in Chile you are cheating us as customers, from the gaming market to market app is a theft of money for the user.

  • Logic Squirrel

It is easy to say once more microsoft has nothing, it is surprising how anyone can be excited over this, i have kinect and all but over the past year i have let my gold subscription go due to lack of anything new. I have been playing more and more on my ps3 and with this years e3 i can see that happening over the next year. Xbox was once awesome but it has sadly lost it’s ways trying to be everything it has become nothing for the gamer… spread to thin and faded out of existence. Xbox has gotten so weak for the gamer and that is what it should be focusing on.

  • http://twitter.com/BigSaltyDookie Cobra Kai

Wow, Internet Explorer on 360?? Can I use it to download Chrome or Firefox?

  • http://twitter.com/Jawolf360 Jason Herrick

I was a PC Gamer and never owned the original Xbox. When the Xbox 360 was announced and connected to my PC for media centre and it gave me a way to display content on my TV I bought one at launch in 2005. Now it played all games and I bought more and more. Had MS stood still you would all moan. I love getting the extra “free” functionality to a device I already own and now have three due to roaming profiles and cloud saved games…(none were original features!)

So stop moaning at MS as they are trying to give us all more options. Not long ago, I had to fire up my PC to do things I now rely on my 360 for. Bring on all free updates and convergance of my devices with Xbox Smartglass. I might find it really great and it could become the extra screen for some games, add realism or whatever. If I dion’t like something, I don’t use it.

I find kinect is great for a number of 360 controls, especially any TV apps, but I admit games for the hardcore gamer are slow to come, if at all, but MS have not said you have to use it. It is your choice.

MS have to add as much functionality to the 360 as every other manufacturer has now started to add these functions as well, and this may cause a new purchase of the 360 instead of another console. Then as happened to me, they will start on the games and yes they could be kinect , arcade or hard core. What matters to me is that I can use my Xbox 360 to do what I want it to do. I can’t say that in todays world, I would want to be using the same 360 dashboard as was launched back in 2005.

If MS offered 2 versions of the 360 at the same price but one for core gamers with limited features and original system with lack of support for cloud profile services, or a newer easier look and feel with far greater functionality and support for as is now provided. Why would you buy the old one???? You would buy the one that offers most functionality.

E3 is also a time when other games are released and demos shown, so watch out for the things that interest you.

I know that MS have created games, but perhaps they are now finding more game companies understand how to exploit the 360 and are best positioned to give you that new hardcore gaming and original ideas. I do not see that Microsoft are messing things up, they are now thinking about all of their products and how life for the consumer can be made easier.

I enjoyed the 2012 E3, so thank you Microsoft and Major Nelson for all the updates, the shows and love of the 360!

    • BigBernard

Jason Herrick – A masterpiece of brown nosing there, especially the last line. Well done.

  • Ярослав Лопанский

Don’t make SEGA or Nintendo mistakes, Microsoft, this “letter” looks like an insult to gamers. I wanted to see new IPs, REAL game from RARE and not another Kinect trash. What I saw? Well, halo 4 looked good. Nothing else, Tomb Raider? I can get that on other platforms.

Seems like Microsoft forget who brought Xbox on top of console market – core gamers. All media additions are good and fancy, but not when they harm the game part of the console.

It’s makes me laugh that even those media features promoted during last 2 E3′s are U.S. only in 9 out of 10 cases. So from European country resident point of view the conference was lot of bullshit feeding. I bought console on launch to play Halo 3, to play Kameo, PGR, hell even Dark Zero was great. Now it seems like Microsoft want me to play Kinect Animals and Sports.

If nothing changes you will lose people who made Xbox 360 so popular and end up as Nintendo. Sure, they try to get core gamers back now, but they lost whole bunch of core gamers with Wii, those gamers joined PS3 or Xbox 360 community. Now forcing us to play your casual Kinect trash will only make everyone go PS3.

  • http://www.thechrisd.com/ TheChrisD

So, how many people will be using IE on Xbox for the sole purpose to attempt to download Chrome for Xbox? :P

  • VegaDD

ie is a joke people wanted a browser on the xbox years ago but that time has passed now, look at the youtube app its terrible i used it once…in fact give us the option to remove blades so i can take them all off exept games.

  • http://www.facebook.com/timJ.collins Timothy Collins

The new features sound really great! So… any idea when they might be pushed out as an upgrade?

  • David

It’s as if Microsoft is caring less and less about gamers while Sony is starting to care more about gamers. It’s sad. Zero surprises at this E3, no new IP’s and a lot of blah. Who really cares about internet on the console? And everything else mentioned seems too gimmicky. At E3 I’m sure I’m not the only one that wants to hear about games, get a surprise or 2 like a new IP or 2 and couldn’t care less about anything other than games and consoles. I really think MS needs some new people running things for the Xbox team because gamers made them what they are and now they are slapping us in the face frequently.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003307697956 Kieran Tsao

Fear not Microsoft, just seen NIntendo’s conference… them and Sony’s were all rubbish.

  • fried_egg

Every day I question more and more what I get for my sub. I do not need a second cable box, and if I did I would get a cable box designed to be a cable box, not one that takes 20 shakes of a hand or 10 presses of buttons to do what a cable box does with one.

  • uss_liberty

And as usual hardly nothing for us not living in USA.

“We are deeply committed to bringing the services and entertainment that people love on Xbox LIVE to our members around the world”
Fuck off. If you were, you would have enabled the voice search in English globally. Not forcing localized lock downs on features.
Give everyone English voice control on the dashboard up until you implement their respective language.

And the last channel we got in Sweden was a fucking baseball channel. Really? Who the hell cares about baseball outside of USA?? Why not a cricket channel too?

  • mata7

a letter from jack tretton, all ps3+ members get 12 free full games after e3, im downloading my free games right now

    • Russell Gorall

Same here. Just got Playstation Plus today.

  • Russell Gorall

Major, you forgot to post on your blog about possible free games coming for Gold subscribers to counter what Playstation Plus is doing. I know you are busy tweeting about nothing, but give your blog a try. We do.

  • Pemalite

I haven’t turned my XBox on in 6 months, that’s how “enticing” the games have been for a games machine.
I expect I’ll Purchase Halo 4, play it, then shelve it and my Xbox will again lay dormant for another year.
PC is where it’s at currently. Great thing about the PC? Games are cheaper, we get more than just 1080P, better sound, better graphics… Oh and the games are cheaper and there are more of them!

  • http://twitter.com/lokanadam vijay kumar

New block-buster hard-core games will be hard to come by in near future for any console; reasons:
    – silly online social games
    – huge cost in times of recession
    – budgets transferred to making silly mobile games
    – all major game studios are suffering either slowdown or losses.
    Even though MS would like to get a big list of big games; its not MS job to create them;

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=728650258 Dave Packard

This is the first E3 where Microsoft’s presentation and overall showing has left me feeling a bit nervous about the future. I’m a gamer first and foremost; to me and my son, Xbox is all about *games*. The TV stuff is nice, but it’s not why I’m an Xbox owner. I’ve come away feeling that Microsoft has really let the gamers down and is focusing way too much on trying to make the Xbox this one-stop-shop for entertainment.

Honestly, Mr. Whitten, what makes you think I want to take my eyes away from the movie or TV show I’m watching to look at my iPhone for additional content? Why would I have interest in Xbox Music when I’ve already got the ability to stream millions of songs across different devices at a great price thanks to Spotify? And where were the killer games and new IPs this year? Yes, Halo 4 looks impressive, but it’s still…Halo. How great it would have been to open the show with a brand new IP. Instead, we get the next iteration of Call of Duty which, while certainly pretty, looked uninspired from a gameplay standpoint.

Sure, these are just my opinions, but when I get the feeling that Microsoft is moving the Xbox away from the core gamer and toward the casual folks — and even non-gamers — that worries me. It makes me re-evaluate what’s on the horizon and where my limited entertainment dollars should be spent. And right now, I’m not completely sold that Microsoft is going to be offering the best gaming experiences down the road.

  • http://www.facebook.com/xmilleniumproductions Cori Merklinger

how about makin a super smash bros-type thing for xbox??? sony can do it for ps3, why not microsoft????? halo fans would probly love to fight as master chief against characters like shepard and john marston, maybe even marcus fenix, for the gears fans. i think microsoft should fire some of their idiots and bring true veteran gamers in, then MAYBE you might see some good stuff! but knowing moneys persuasion, theyd think they were too rich for that.

  • anigmha

For me Hybrid is definitely the one to look at among the Summer of Arcade list.

  • http://twitter.com/litepink360 anna smoley

If this is a open letter, could someone clarify the role of achievements on Windows 8? Will it be like GFWL where they are few and far between, or more in tune with Windows Phone, where’s there’s a dedicated lineup of Xbox LIVE titles with achievements?
