XBLA’s Kinect Adventure game ‘Haunt’ free for a limited time!

Haunt
As part of a new dashboard feature that launched today in the US called ‘Kinect Central’ -  the Xbox LIVE Arcade title ‘Haunt’ will be FREE for a limited time!  This promotion runs in the US from Tuesday, June 26th through Monday, July 2nd and can only be accessed on the new ‘Kinect Central’ homepage on your dashboard.  So head on over and get your free game.

Free, Kinect By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

Why not UK? Why only US? It’s a digital game. There’s no reason a promotion like this can’t be done globally.

  • http://twitter.com/MrXBob Mr XBob

Why not UK? Why only US? This is a digital game. There’s no reason this promotion can’t be global.

    • http://twitter.com/billelm3 Robert E

There is NO reason for YOU to NOT be able to log into a USA gamertag, download the game for FREE and then play it on your UK gamertag.

      • http://twitter.com/alicegamer85 Alice green

No reason why we should have to make a USA to get the deal… plus doesn’t Xbox check your IP address now…. well that’s what i thought…

        • http://twitter.com/billelm3 Robert E

Yes, there is a reason… this promotion is limited to the UK Marketplace/Dashboard. Just like there are promotions and offers limited to the UK. Such as all the recent FREE Avatar clothing and props coming out of the UK and elsewhere in Europe.
While certain Apps and Functions are limited by IP, downloading a XBLA game and taking advantage of a FREE offer of said game is NOT limited by IP. Even if it were, there are easy and FREE ways to change your Xbox’s IP.
There is a reason why a lot of people have FREE Silver gametags in more than one if NOT all Xbox LIVE Regions. It’s because of exclusive FREE offers such as games, avatar items, themes, gamer pics, etc.
If you cannot be bothered, then move on.

          • http://twitter.com/alicegamer85 Alice green

well guess I’m wrong…. :( still doesn’t change that FACT MR xbob was correct in what he typed… and plus isn’t making a account for another region other that one you reside in against the T&C?

          • http://www.toothball.co.uk Toothball

The point that you seem to be missing is that having to use a US account to take advantage of something like this makes many people question whether they are being taken seriously as a non-US customer. People have spent time and money in their Gamertags, so being told that they’re in the wrong region can make that seem like a wasted investment.

The workaround of using multiple Gamertags that you’re so fond of shouting about may let you take advantage of offers like this, but it shouldn’t be necessary to lie about which country you live in to feel like you’re being treated as a valued customer.

          • http://twitter.com/konawwww konawwww

Exactly. The worst thing is that I’ve actually been told by an official xbox support representative on the phone that I SHOULD make another gamertag with false billing information (which surely is illegal) in order to use DLC that was region locked.

The whole system is in dire need of an overhaul.

I just don’t understand why it’s so difficult to give everyone the same content at the same price. Sure, hide the foreign games deep in some sub menu if you wish. Having 4 accounts to juggle in order to be a legitimate customer is not fun. PSN is just as bad if not worse than XBL.

The most hilarious aspect of this joke of a system is that if I just pirated everything I wouldn’t have to worry about any of these problems. Who knows why Microsoft wants to make it so difficult to give them money sometimes.

          • http://www.toothball.co.uk Toothball

The system is largely limited to regions due to the many and varied licensing issues involved in international media distribution. The whole licensing system seems to assume that everything is still distributed physically, but the internet has progressed faster than the legal system that its bound by. Perhaps Microsoft want to give things to everyone, but at the moment it likely involves much more money and paperwork to do so. The entire business is in need of a shake up really, not just for offers like this.

Still, none of that should be the problem of the end user. They don’t see what’s going on behind the curtain, and they shouldn’t need to. Unfortunately what they do see is some customers getting things that others aren’t, which isn’t going to make them happy even if they know why.

          • http://twitter.com/konawwww konawwww

Oh I know exactly why it happens. It’s just silly that you have to jump through so many hoops to give the “content creators” your money in exchange for the content.

I just really hope that the next generation of consoles has a much better way of handling regions. I don’t think I can be bothered with them if it’s more of the same.

I’ve already given up on my 3DS because I couldn’t buy the games I wanted to play.

It just seems like a situation that benefits no one and I wish we could get some kind of progression. If Microsoft led the way I would be a loyal customer forever. It’s just that painful to be a legitimate customer interested in foreign content right now.

Ironically this was all easier before the days of digital downloads, DLC and the like. You could just buy a foreign console and the games to go with it.

          • ElektroDragon

Sony has figured out how to make everything region-free, why not Microsoft?

          • http://www.toothball.co.uk Toothball

The hardware may be region free, but PSN is still divided into territories. There have been many occasions where content has been released in the US but not Europe. The strategy of making another account works there too, but I’d still rather see all regions treated the same, even if it isn’t feasible under the current system.

      • http://www.facebook.com/jason.bell.18007218 Jason Bell

Robert E – this method is no longer possible as if you try to set up a live account from the UK now, your only options are hotmail.CO.UK or live .CO.UK – either way MS are aware you are in the UK.

        • http://www.facebook.com/ian.thompson.902604 Ian Thompson

You can set up a live account that doesn’t use a microsoft e-mail you know… :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003976957614 Willy McBurgle

Guess what? I’m in the UK and even if it WAS available here, I still wouldn’t download it.

      • hangoverman

        Then why comment?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Avi-Patel/100002076529431 Avi Patel

ok…then why are you here since you obviously don’t care about the game one bit??

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephan-Tenspel/578534292 Stephan Tenspel

Microsoft doesnt care about non-us members, us get all the cool stuff and we only get twitter and facebook

  • http://twitter.com/BackwardsNinja Hassan Bokhari

Thanks for the free copy :D

  • http://twitter.com/HibridoErrante ↑,↑,↓,↓,←,→,←,→,B,A

    SAD

  • ryder4life22187

good game for kinect get it while its free least i got it during deal of the week and didnt pay full price

  • http://seankilbane.com/ Sean

Lame you can’t get it via the Xbox.com marketplace. :(

  • http://twitter.com/karlcramer Karl Cramer

Now everyone, what do you say? “Thank you.”

    • http://twitter.com/GaussBb Bradley

And by everyone, you mean US only.

  • Ozzpot

It’s my birthday on July 2nd too. I thought this might be a cool birthday present for my near 8 years of loyalty to Xbox Live, but I live in the UK so I guess not. :(

  • MyJewlzHurt

USA only again. This is why I am letting my Gold subscription lapse and not bothering to renew. Went to PlayStation Plus….atleast Sony seems to care about the rest of the world….do I get to keep the games, no, they are in essence only rentals as one the PS+ expires (if I don’t renew, which is unlikely as it does appear to be an excellent value), so do the games, but I have all year to complete them….if the have not much of a replay value…I am not out anything….what have Microsoft given me……&$%&*$# all.

  • http://twitter.com/yamayamayaamaa «-•·÷·- ¥ámá -·÷·•-»

    Thanks for the game!

And to the non-US people… Just make a US account. Very simple!

    • http://www.facebook.com/jason.bell.18007218 Jason Bell

Not really as it has to be accessed via the US only update for the dashboard (Kinect Central) Gutted

  • http://twitter.com/Coldgears Chris Walker

Thanks for putting this game on sale twice this month. That way everyone who wanted it (like me) already shelled out $5. This is just the icing on the cake.

  • http://twitter.com/Aisle7c Aisle7c

wow I’m kind of irked. I bought this for $10 on day one. i understand thing go on sale and get discounted, but for FREE? Maybe i wait on all my xbla purchases from now on.

    • Alex_Atkin_UK

By that logic why not wait 15-20 years and also get the Xbox 360 console for free?

Its always a matter of time.

      • http://twitter.com/Aisle7c Aisle7c

Seriously? I’ve never seen a free console or a paid game from xbox go free before.

        • mcmax3000

There have been paid XBLA games that have been offered for free before. It doesn’t happen often, but it has happened.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zaira-Vicere/100003482240394 Zaira Vicere

Do you only buy digital games? Surely if you purchased a retail game on day 1 for $60, you’d not be very irked when it’s half price in a few weeks?

    • ElektroDragon

You’re probably the only person who bought this stinker, which is why its now free.

  • flabeo

You know I’ve always liked Xbox better. But paying $50/yr for Xbox live gold and being shown a free game that IS NOT available to me in the far off land of Canada. Vs. the $50 a year I spend on Playstation Plus who currently has 12 Free fairly big name games available this month alone. Not to mention the 60 other games they released for free since the PS+ launch.

I’m not looking for flame wars here, but I think we can all admit that it would be nice to see Xbox offer something even remotely close to ALL of it’s loyal PAYING subscribers.

We love you Xbox, now make us love you a little more :)

    • ungeheier

“12 Free fairly big name games”

Granted, ill give you Little Big Planet and Infamous 2, but that’s only 2 games. I am a PS+ subscriber as well. While nice, I rarely play the trash that’s usually released on it.

      • flabeo

True, they’re not all “big name” but I was pretty happy with free Saints Row 2 and Just Cause 2 along with the Simpsons Arcade Game, Sonic the Headehog Trilogy, Resident Evil trilogy and silent hill. It’s hit and miss and never something as big as COD or Uncharted, but I picture it sort of like netflix for video games. Who wouldn’t want Xbox to compete with that?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jimbo-Jones/100002194084560 Jimbo Jones

What bullshit, seriously… we get nothing on Xbox… a p2p service and no freebies at all. Microsoft only just bribe everyone to get ‘exclusivity’ deal because Microsoft can’t make good games and when they buy good companies (like Rare) they FUCK THEM UP

    • Jon Blake

Playstation Plus doesnt give you free games. They loan you games. You get a free copy for as long as they want you to have it.

      • flabeo

They haven’t taken a game from me yet. Granted Yes you do need to be a subscriber to play the games which is a downfall but it’s still free content I’d like to see Microsoft compete with.

        • Dustin Patton

They rent you a multiplayer player experience. Which becomes useless once your live subscription ends.

          • medveten

And Xbox live Gold rent syou nothing, it makes you pay to get stuff that’s FREE on PSN like multiplayer.
On PSN you can (optionally pay) to get games, DLC, avatar stuff and such, as a free rental, for as long as you wish.

Pay to play + pay to get anything VS free 2 play, pay 2 get awesome stuff cheap.
Tell me again, who’s giving you a better deal?
Yes, Sony is in every way. To bad the Ps3 got so bad 3rd party support for games, then again MS dedicated E3 to everything but games (pathetic).

      • Flawless

and what exactly does XBL give us?

      • http://twitter.com/alicegamer85 Alice green

Doesn’t matter anyway because if you don’t live in the USA… you can’t have it….

      • ElektroDragon

Not true, it’s a long as you want to keep paying the low subscription fee. SAME AS ZUNE PASS, same XBL in terms of multiplayer.

  • Nappli

Living in Germany, being an XBox Live member is hard these days… First one additional month for the Dawnguard DLC, now this! :(

    • http://twitter.com/Navarin Buster Wolf

At least you’re probably going to win Euro 2012.

  • BIGSimon

until microsoft admits that people outside the US own an Xbox we will never get the same deals

    • http://twitter.com/billelm3 Robert E

the same could easily be said of NON US exclusive deals.
Then again, NOTHING is stopping YOU from downloading this game on a silver/free USA tag and then playing the game for FREE on your NON US gamertag. The game is tied to the console, NOT the gamertag.

      • medveten

        The “NON US exclusive deals”?
What kind of strange fictional world are you in, here in reality US gets everything!
If somethings for sale in UK/Europe, it’s been for sale in the US before, and probably at a lower price. US gets TV shows, games, DLC, items and well all the stuff MS talks about at E3, that pauing customers in EU doesn’t get at all.

This is yet another proof of MS major arrogance, I hope they fail miserably the next gen so one can get a Ps4 and still enjoy 3rd party games, because MS is treating everything outside US like blam! and it’s paying gold customers world wide as blam!
While Sony does not, world wide deals, PSN+ superior to live gold in every way, they even had GAMES to show on E3 (unlike MS).
To bad Sony lacks 3rd party support, as long as Ms got that there is no idea to get a Ps3. Let’s hope that changes next gen, and that MS is forced to realise that the rest of the world exists too. American arrogance is just way to much, yours as well as MS.

  • http://twitter.com/lightsup55 Timothy

I don’t see this “Kinect Central” anywhere on the dashboard…

Do I need the Kinect accessory just to access it?

    • http://www.facebook.com/dean1076 Dean Martin

yes connect the kinect to the xbox im uk n i got it thankings very muches

  • http://twitter.com/Kemosahbay laurie verso

And so the 32x games begin again how history repeats itself.Good way to make about 20 mill xbox 360 users that dont have a kinect to use mad.

  • z3razerviper

Its not showing free for me.on the web only on the dashboard and when I download it it does not show as purchaced on the web.

    • BIGSimon

as he said above “can only be accessed on the new ‘Kinect Central’ homepage on your dashboard”

  • RedRooster29

My son just bought this game using points he got for his birthday. I guess no refunds for us suckers.

    • http://twitter.com/weroram Jorge Reséndez

it’s like saying the same for DotW

    • http://twitter.com/Navarin Buster Wolf

Get on the phone to Support. You might be surprised.

    • RedRooster29

I was just in a crappy mood yesterday. My son had a blast playing Haunt so in his mind it was worth the points.

  • http://twitter.com/MythicalWolf77 Mythical Wolf

    Lol Kinect

  • http://twitter.com/CockneyCharmer Sean T

Typical…no reason why this offer couldnt be extended to the UK KInect users, who ever they may be…..shocking favouritism being shown once again for the US market over other Xbox Regions

    • http://www.justechn.com Ryan McLaughlin

Dude, stop whining, just sign up for a US account to get the free stuff. I have a US account, korean account, and a Japanese account all because each one offered a different free game.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matthew-Valencia/100001304523379 Matthew Valencia

Yes, don’t ever complain because that is how it gets fixed, wait a minute…
He definitely has a point man and should complain because that is how it is made aware of how it is a problem and (maybe) gets resolved.

        • http://www.justechn.com Ryan McLaughlin

I don’t think anything ever got fixed by whining to Major Nelson. He is just the messenger, not the decision maker. I would be surprised if he even reads the comments, I hardly ever see him reply.

          • TheRequiem95

I’ve seen him reply a couple of times, but I think managing this blog would be a full time job if he responded to each and every complaint.

      • http://twitter.com/CockneyCharmer Sean T

You miss the point completely…but thats ok, I understand why that happened, enjoy your day and just hope for a better tomorrow my friend

  • http://www.facebook.com/jonj95835 Jon Johnson

Do you have to have kinect for this new kinect central to show up???

    • http://www.facebook.com/jason.bell.18007218 Jason Bell

      Yes Jon

  • http://www.thetjhzone.blogspot.com/ Tylerh1701

Wow the idiocy in this thread is at a new high.

    • BIGSimon

and you went and joined it, lol

  • http://twitter.com/dlchief58 Michael Burden

Good news about the Kinect Central, now I should not have to hunt for or use Bing just to get to the Kinect Fun Labs. Too bad I already bought Haunt at full price shortly after it came out. Oh well, at least I got Dawnguard for free.

  • http://twitter.com/NickJAmbrose Nicholas J. Ambrose

US only? This is so disappointing. I’m in the UK, bought a Kinect at launch, have subscribed to Xbox Live for 9 years – and I get nothing. What a rollercoaster ride of a day – great deal of the week, then no freebie because I live in the wrong part of the world.

  • Z4M0

If that ” kinect Central” thingy hits european marketplaces anytime, I hope the free game (if any) won’t be this one, since I already purchased it time ago

  • http://about.me/moto_grrl Jen Hochstedler

So am I missing something? I clicked the Kinect Central tile that says “Free” from the Home page but I don’t see it. I just see a lot of Kinect Central stuff but not Haunt. When I look the game up in Marketplace it is still the regular price.

  • http://twitter.com/MaliceCrew Phil Rapoza

For all those in UK complaining about not getting a free game at least you all get free health care so it’s a fair trade off IMO!

    • Ben Thyer

Yes but that’s because our health care is through a different company where as everyone on the Xbox is with the same company so it should be equal across the world

    • Alex_Atkin_UK

Its not free, we pay for it in tax on our income.

  • http://www.facebook.com/SupaSonikku Pascal Benavides

Only for you the U.S.? pfff… Hey Microsoft wake up !! the rest of the world also exists, eh.

    • http://twitter.com/billelm3 Robert E

Wake up and get yourself a silver US gamertag and download the game then play it on your derpa derpa tag, eh.

  • Russell Gorall

    Free is good.

  • http://twitter.com/JsinChaos Jsin

Sweet the demo was cool and you can’t beat the price!

  • John Durning

What time today does this start? Game shows up as 800 Points on xbox.com? Also why you make me search for it, when you could’ve linked to it here?

    • http://twitter.com/dlchief58 Michael Burden

DId you not even read the article? It is only available through the Kinect Central hub on the Xbox 360 dashboard, which will only appear if you have a Kinect attached to it.

  • http://vghangover.com/ Matt Kernan

So… I’m visiting my in-laws this week. I brought my Xbox with me, but not my Kinect. Any way to get around this ‘only available through Kinect Central’ thing?

  • http://twitter.com/Navarin Buster Wolf

    “In the US.”

Get lost, if it’s not free I’m not buying it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003993130922 Time Shift

Oh my gosh, what have they done with my dashboard?! Why must I own a Kinect and live in the United States? Oh the horror… so much pointless “adds.”

    • http://twitter.com/dlchief58 Michael Burden

Well for one, it is a Kinect only game that would be useless without a Kinect.

  • http://twitter.com/liamyates Liam Yates

Set up a free US account and download it

do you have to have kinect to get this. like is it in some app or something that only people with kinect can get.
i ask as i dont have kinect but am looking to get soon.

Someone asks 1 stupid comment Major Nelson replies, 100 people as a serious question, Major Nelson is nowhere to be found. For such a massive company ud think theyd have a better PR team!

Why no free Haunt for other regions Major?

    • http://twitter.com/WickedWaffles93 Synthetic Generation

MajorNelson has communication issues with the community. He does in fact answer to those with stupid questions that could simply be found by using Google.

    • http://twitter.com/alicegamer85 Alice green

Because then he would have to actually talk to a customer… that’s not gonna happen…

  • http://www.facebook.com/jason.bell.18007218 Jason Bell

Come on Major / MS – do the right thing by your global customers and dont force us to circumvent your system by creating US gamertags. Make this promo global today, you know it makes sense.

Free achievements? I’m cool with that :D!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1351905810 Chris Halley

&Reading throughout all the comments, XBL has one gigantic whiny community :/

    • http://twitter.com/GaussBb Bradley

Actually, I think you’ll find the majority of people that do complain are legitimate ones that give reason as to why people are upset/annoyed. Whining is different. People have a reason to be annoyed that this is only free in the US.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zaira-Vicere/100003482240394 Zaira Vicere

Gonna have to agree. It’s stated clearly that this is a US promotion, and I’m sure there will be UK only promotions soon enough. Can’t read a single comment section on this site without constant whining. Let alone repetitive, it’s hard to weed out a single “thank you” among the crowd of whining. It sucks that it’s US-only, we get it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/martin.heathcote Martin Heathcote

        UK promotion? LOL

        • http://twitter.com/Navarin Buster Wolf

Haha, too right. I’m from the UK and we’re still waiting for a promotion!

      • http://twitter.com/CockneyCharmer Sean T

UK get a weekend of Free LIVE…which is no good to anyone who is a full Gold subscription user, and we dont get free games like this US promotion. The game is still full price for us…we get ads, we dont have inside xbox, we pay the same subscription rate as the US community

So yeah, UK Xbox users are really wanting to know why they dont get a similar promotion, thats our right…dont like it…go play Haunt lol

        • http://twitter.com/dlchief58 Michael Burden

Nobody has Inside Xbox anymore as they mothballed it about a month ago. And everybody has the ads, so that is another moot point. While I cannot think of specific examples off the top of my head, I have seen several European promotions that were not open to US or other regions.

  • http://twitter.com/hizoka_darkwolf alias: Hizoka Andou

this is why I have an american GT instead of one from my own country… nothing happens on our marketplace LOL. Maybe we are not valuable customers as Americans, who knows…

  • http://twitter.com/Timmzy27 Matthew Timms

Kinect game??? Damn, don’t care and from UK anyway.

  • http://twitter.com/senote andrew senote

Xbox itself is pretty damn good, if they would just listen to the users and quit being so US bias it would be awesome. Perhaps this is why they can’t give them away in Japan and are closer in sales to PS3 in Europe. To be fair to MS they’re not the only company that does this, but it certainly doesn’t help Americas global image.

    • http://twitter.com/dlchief58 Michael Burden

The same could be said about SONY and they are even worse about it. Look at how many exclusive offers, games, and different PS3 configurations the offer in Japan only. We just don’t hear about the majority of them due to the language barrier.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lMawds Lee Mawdsley

Just reaffirms my suspicions that Mircosoft have no clue what they’re doing.
