Reminder: Update Your Security Information

I wanted to make sure that you saw this letter from Alex Garden that was posted today, and more importantly remind you to check your security information and update it if necessary.

Luckily my dad cancelled the credit card that my XBL account uses!

Nice read. Floors me people still use “password” for a password…. you feed em books…….

  • taternuggets

apparently, the only way to confirm you new security information is to have a link sent to your original email address, and mine has always had a typo in it so I can’t receive that email. sigh.

  • DragonsDeck

The only annoying part is that I’ve added the two security proofs, but I couldn’t add a trusted PC through that link. I’d D/L’d WLE but the MS account site won’t recognize it for whatever reason.

      Are you using Internet Explorer?

  • Lee Rayson

I have linked my ID to my mobile number and My pc so i think im pretty safe

Yes you can recover your hacked account lickety-split. ;)

      • Lee Rayson

Would have to get hacked in the first place……..an anyone who trys my password on any other PC it sends me a text message to my phone and you cant add or change the number without having to send a code to my phone

Just curious, but what would happen if you were to say, loose your phone?!

          • Lee Rayson

but if i were to loose it then my trusted PC (mine) would allow me acess e-mails but it probably would be hard to add or remove the number, but since the number is registered to me i could probably buy a new sim card and have the number transfered over

  • Musab Adam

my hotmail actually got hacked (luckily i recovered it and changed any accounts to my gmail ) so people listen to the guy ,it might save you

Doesn’t help if the Customer Services staff can be duped into giving out your info and/or changing it.

I want to know how to get an e-mail off my account from when it was hacked. When XBox recovered my account they didn’t remove the hackers e-mail contact and now no one can seem to fix it. I’ve opened multiple tickets with XBox and XBL Support, and they all point fingers somewhere else.

YES! I can add new ones but my primary one is one thats loooooong gone.

So look at the article and read the LAST section…

  • Russell Gorall

If they want it bad enough you are screwed anyway. Not that anyone shouldn’t provide a safe password, etc.

My password for everything is Gibbletoez88. They will never guess that.

too bad i cant update my security info without it sending me a confirmation link!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/adamdjt Adam Daniel John Thompson

Doesn’t help when people fall for phishing scams for free MS points, and then get their account hacked and blame Microsoft.

I’m in the same boat! Can’t add a new address or phone number or even delete my existing email address as that email account is long closed! When I select to remove it, it says I must confirm removal by clicking on the link it is going to send to that old email address?!

  • http://twitter.com/beegeedee Brian Dines

I had the same problem as Adam, for some reason my live account was registered to an old domain I had registered. fortunately I still have the domain so was able to get the email and sort it out. My account had actually been locked so clearly something was going on.

  • http://twitter.com/deans6571 Dino

How do I delete an old email that is not active any more? When I click on ‘delete’ it says it will send a link to the email address which I want to delete, to confirm, however that email address is no longer active so it’s impossible for me to receive the link to confirm deletion?!?!
