2012 Xbox LIVE Update Public Beta Now Available **UPDATED**

Update: The amount of interest in Xbox LIVE’s first public Beta has been incredible. The Xbox LIVE public Beta is now closed. Later this year our entire Xbox LIVE community will be able to experience all of the great features we will be bringing to your Xbox…Stay tuned!

With our work on the updated dashboard underway, we’re ready to announce an open call for all Xbox LIVE subscribers to participate in the 2012 Xbox LIVE Update Public Beta.

We need members of our valued community to help us fine-tune this early build of Xbox LIVE. What do you love? What would you like to see improved?

Numbers are limited, so sign up today. If you’re selected as a tester, an update will be pushed to your console once the public beta kicks off. The update will contain select dashboard features, including:

  • Internet Explorer for Xbox
  • Personalized dashboard recommendations
  • Enhanced category search and discovery features

Note: A console in the program is expected to remain fully compatible with standard retail consoles not in the program.

You will be required to agree to a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for confidentiality reasons.

We also ask that you fill out a brief 5-minute survey at the end of the beta, to let us know what you think.

The 2012 Xbox LIVE Update Public Beta is a great opportunity to help the Xbox team by providing early feedback to make Xbox even better.

    I wish they finaly decide to make some changes to the cache and updates sistem… why my 250gb hdd only have space for the last 4-5 updates??? let us asign a determined space for patches and updates, most of them range from 3 to 9 mb so why erase them automatically ?

      I think that system is on the way out anyway (correct me if I am wrong). I see more and more games are getting their patches downloaded to their respective folder on the harddrive because many patches are getting larger than the cache size limit.

    Actually I only see a “Favourites” option that’s customisable. Hopefully it won’t take an eon to load like Quickplay.

    Yeah Michael I got the update this afternoon too and am posting this with the XBL IE using my chatpad. It does work really well and loads pages fast. And I also LOVE how much faster the Quickplay launcher loads with this update!

      way to tell ppl info your not allowed to good job. as saying your posting from your xbox is giving out info about the update so you are not following the rules as it states talking about the update in anyway. and your talking about the update and what you can do with it.

    Why Internet Explorer? Everyone uses Google chrome now, if you can’t get them to let you add Google Chrome then have Bing make their own Internet Web Browser.

    My third console that I bought last year freezes enough on the Dashboard. The IE thing will be interesting if done right, too bad it isn’t Chrome.

      Google can’t even get chrome to work right on tablets/phones half of the time so you aren’t missing anything. Hell, on my ANDROID tablet chrome doesn’t even work with flash most of the time :/ IE on the Xbox looks and works great, but other than testing it I won’t use it.

    something to think about for the updates dashboard…when i say “xbox…apps…Netflix” i would love for the Netflix app to start, not take me to a screen that asks me if i want to play it, delete it, or whatever. the same with exiting it. if i wanted to delete anything, wouldn’t the best place for that to be included in the “Apps Marketplace” area.

      You need to go to the Microsoft Connect website, click “My Dashboard” (you may need to
      sign-in), then “Xbox LIVE Update”, then “Product Keys”. Follow the steps
      there to request a new product key.

      Once you have your new product key, use the “Redeem Code” option from
      the Xbox Guide on your Xbox 360 console and download the “Pre-Release
      Console Registration Application” to your Xbox 360.

      After the download completes, launch the “Pre-Release Public” app
      (listed as a “game demo”) and follow the on-screen instructions.

      You can register up to 3 consoles by signing in with the gamertag that
      signed up for the update preview, re-downloading “Pre-Release Console
      Registration Application” from your Download History and running app
      with that same gamertag (noted in the app).

    IT WOULD BE AWESOME IF when you left a player review you could avoid players for LAG or bad connections. the rating system is useless anyways but it would be nice on certain games someone will have a Kmart connection and the only way to avoid is well there is no way to avoid. shouldnt this system be looked into sometimes I’ll avoid someone only to be sent back to that person the next game. playing with people who float around the screen is never fun. If I;m in ky i shouldn;t be paired with people from UK or japan. but it still happens constantly

      The entire rep system has always been useless. It has been reported on Connect many times in the past, yet it still remains. The player review options should simply be “like” and “avoid” and should only be overriden if there are no other players (like it is now most of the time).
      Only for real complaints should there be those specific options (though a complaint for quitting early would be useless IMHO ;) ).
      Being a douche or a saint on Xbox Live does nothing for your rep stars on your gamertag. A friend of mine made it a sport to get his rep to 1 percent and then get it back up again by being nice to people, but all the time he still had the five stars after the first couple of people had voted on his profile. The only thing 3 stars tells you is that the player is new to Xbox Live or has never played online multiplayer.
      Those stars should be removed from GamerTags and could be replaced with useful information like the amount of games played, like in offline accounts, or the amount of completed games achievement wise (or combined, e.g. 13/77).
      I have no idea if the Zone system actually works as I have been “Underground” ever since I started.

      Yes, yes it does according to multiple people, but that link isn’t supposed to be public. MS will probably block it soon and there is no telling if your console actually receives the update after registering it via the Pre-Release Console Registration Application.

    The Dashboard is overloaded as it is, so they are going to add more stuff to it.

    The time for video apps to load is ridiculous, my wife won’t even use it for that anymore.

      On the beta homepage on Connect, there’s a Forum Quick Guide link that has a direct link to the private forum (make sure you’re logged in with the correct gamertag first).
