Xbox LIVE Community Flex Political Muscle during Interactive Vice Presidential Debate

Above is an example of the interactivity used during last night’s US Vice-Presidential debate that was carried on Xbox LIVE in the US.  There were well-over 800,000 individual responses to poll questions, and the level of engagement among Xbox LIVE users was extremely high, with over 30,000 responses to each of the questions posed

Here are some data points from last night’s polling data:

  • Biden won the debate with Xbox Swing Voters: 44.1% of undecided voters declared Biden the winner with 22.9% choosing Ryan.
  • Biden was overwhelmingly viewed by our swing voters as being more truthful, garnering the favor of 72.2% of undecided respondents.
  • An overwhelming 70.1% of undecided voters do not consider a candidate’s religion when deciding for whom to vote.
  • 53.7% of undecided voters felt that Biden is better prepared to step in as president compared to 21% for Ryan

Here is a more granular look at the results:

Support Who do you think is more truthful? Who won the debate tonight?
Joe Biden Paul Ryan Joe Biden Paul Ryan Not Sure
Strong Obama 48.8% 99.1% 0.9% 95.0% 1.2% 3.8%
Leaning Obama 4.5% 94.7% 5.3% 82.0% 5.0% 13.0%
Undecided 5.8% 72.2% 27.8% 44.1% 22.9% 32.9%
Leaning Romney 3.1% 18.8% 81.2% 16.7% 63.0% 20.4%

Strong Other 3.8% 72.9% 27.1% 52.6% 26.4% 21.1%

We are also pleased to announce two new Election 2012 coming later this week —BBC and Comedy Central—bringing relevant content to the election process including clips from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. These new additions join NBCNews.com, Rock the Vote, Face the Facts USA and YouGov in providing compelling content to Xbox LIVE users throughout the 2012 campaign

The next event will be on October 16th.

The survey was designed and analyzed by YouGov in conjunction with Xbox and Microsoft Research. These are preliminary results compiled the night of the debate.

This is somewhat curious to me, since every time I’ve done the Daily Poll on the console’s Xbox Live Dashboard, it seems as though Romney is strongly in the lead. Is this a different poll?

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/FPWAW5F5BB675LSGY4RYW66VLM Matty

Yes! This was DURING the debate. Protip: The word “during” is in the title :)

Plus conservatives are “stuffing” the poll anyways!!! That’s Weak Sauce! VOTE for Obama in the Election Poll, and on NOV. 6, to help get Obama reelected. This president has made me proud to be and American! :)

At least that gives some credibility back to the american population. Biden is far superior to Ryan, seen in an international context – More experienced, less of a gun-wielding nutcase. :)

    • ElektroDragon

Considering that if that arrogant, belittling, angry old man every had to meet with a Middle East leader he’d start WW3, I’d say you’re off your rocker. I can just see him interrupting and laughing at Putin or Ahmadenijad. Yeah, WW3.

  • Artune

Great to see that the XBL community is home to smart and intelligent people for the most part. I’ve been on XBL since 2002 and the community has improved vastly.

    • Avatar Roku

Have you ever had a conversation with anyone on Xbox Live while playing multiplayer? Now imagine those people voting. Your comment is very funny.

      • Artune

I have a conversation all the time on XBL everyday and while there are annoying kids all over, the majority of my time online is very mature

      • KENNETH B

Whats funny is your lack of self-awareness.

  • Smokex365

What I’d really enjoy is a debate without Live crapping out. Should have enough data for the teams capacity planning. Get really annoying having Live go down for 20 mins in the middle of the debate. Good thing there were other sources.

  • McWetty

Started out watching the debate on Xbox, but the server crashed 3 times so I just watched it on NBC. Free armor isn’t worth sitting through server errors. Cool data collection though.

  • fsdfg dsfds

    BS

  • http://www.facebook.com/synpanda Steve Haverda

Mainstream media now encompasses Xbox! Thanks MS for feeding us what view YOU want us to have!

  • jsgrill

LOL…wow are these some wildly BS numbers. All this proves is that an overwhelming number of Democrats/Liberals watched the debate through Xbox LIVE. Every other poll of the debate showed a virtual tie or with Ryan ahead.

Biden acted buffoonish throughout and told a number of outright lies such as claiming he voted against the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. He approved both. And don’t even get me started on the Benghazi mess.

    • SkepticalBen

The numbers arent BS – this is a poll of people who watched over XBox Live. They make no claim of representing the general public.

      • Avatar Roku

I watched from the beginning on XBL and the poll questions never came up for me.

  • scarps51

How reliable are these numbers? How many people are simply hitting “A” just to get the poll off of their screen? There were no preliminary “test” questions to gauge the accuracy of responses. You do this by asking a few questions to which the answers are indisputable –you know… “facts”. For instance… Q: Who is the current President of the United States? Selection of answers: 1. George W. Bush; 2. Joe Biden; 3. Barack Obama.

Who do you have running these polls?

    • MacPh1sto

Since these people being polled are actually taking the time to sit down and watch the debate, I’d say they’re most likely not going to just try and skip past a poll question like it’s a pop-up ad.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ty.dipshit Ty Dipshit

Well one of the vote options for Obama on the first debate was placed in the middle of the 3 options and the % were not off by much, but i still wouldn’t take it seriously as a lot of the voters probably aren’t old enough to vote.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/6DRES67I4WX7UPOEHBF4FSJJGU Angelique S

You really think 16 year olds are running home from school to make sure they have the Xbox all ready to watch the debate?

        • http://www.facebook.com/ty.dipshit Ty Dipshit

Yeah, actually i do mostly because of the exclusive halo Armour promotion that they have been advertising every where on the xbox… and many 16 years old’s are mature enough to watch the debate, it would had made more sense if you had used a lower age for an example.

          • http://twitter.com/wdb1285 Dave Brown

And their teachers probably make them as a research paper or something

  • http://twitter.com/natragv Nathan Vernon

Religion should not be any part of this, because it’s a joke based on a fairy tale. We need people who believe in science and work to be made the leader of the country.

  • http://twitter.com/VectorVictor99 Matt

The numbers are anything but BS–if anything, they’re more statistically relevant than some of the other polling numbers, as they used leading questions to determine likely voters, how the viewer already leaned, and their views on various social, foreign, and religious issues.

Just because the numbers don’t support your myopic view, it doesn’t mean they’re wrong–it just means your candidate didn’t do well.

And I watched the whole thing from beginning to end without interruption. They did an excellent job last night broadcasting it. Kinda wish I would had watched the first debate on XBL instead of broadcast TV.

    • http://twitter.com/billelm3 Robert E

anything but BS? You should realize that childen, non US citizens and other non eligible and/or not registered voters can easily run the App and answer the XBL polling questions.
I’m sure there are also a lot of people who aren’t going to be voting that are running the app just for the Halo 4 Avatar Outfit reward.
In addition, nearly every polling question if NOT all of them starts out with Biden or Obama as the highighted answer. You literally have to manually scroll over and select; Ryan, Romney, Both, etc… otherwise it’s always YES for Biden or Obama.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=593268477 Derek Fors

yeah I noticed every time it was on Biden or Obama and hell I just hit the A button anyway most of the poll questions were pretty bland

  • ElektroDragon

Biden acted like a high school bully, arrogantly laughing and interrupting constantly. My only regret is that Ryan didn’t fight back by punching him in the face.

    • Avatar Roku

Seriously I have never wanted to punch a person in the face more. I couldn’t even pay close attention to anything anyone was saying because that laughing hyena could not shut up. The moderator actually allowed him to interrupt Ryan 82 times in 90 minutes.

      • Guest

It’s Town Hall style herp derp. That’s how they roll lol :P Ryan could have faught back….but didn’t. He’s WEAK SAUCE!!! lol

These 2 comments clearly shows who the real kids are here.

        Let me recap your comments:
        1. Criticize one side based on your perceived rules (not the actual rules of the debate), inferring that the party was outside of acting within ‘polite debate behavior’ (which, its not getting past anyone that so far all your comments only speak to behavior and not indicative of any actual political belief or opinions or facts)
        2. Call for physical violence

  • TangledThorns

So XBOX polled thirteen year olds?

  • http://www.facebook.com/reiderator Reid Buyaky

0 for 2 in debates on XBox Live. First debate server disconnected after 20 minutes or so. VP debate I logged in 2 minutes to liftoff and it kicked me out at start. Trying to reconnect instantly gave “server unavailable, try again later” so I bailed and watched on cable TV.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/FPWAW5F5BB675LSGY4RYW66VLM Matty

      Same here

    • KENNETH B

I bailed, but don’t have cable, so just watched it on youtube.

  • KnoxSe7eN

Has the data for the first debate been released? I didn’t see it listed on here. If someone knows where to find it online please let me know. Thank you

    • pcedfeldt

Here’s what Scientific American said about the first debate (hope the link comes through):
      http://blogs.scientificamerica

      • Avatar Roku

They tried really hard to spin the data into something meaningful, but the first data proved that XBL polling data is garbage.

  • Superman64

    So basically your guy lost.

    • Riddick Snipes

Oh my,, there u go again. Never a comment to make, just idiotic replies. Hey superman 64 have ur balls dropped yet? If they actually have, go copulate yourself.

      • Superman64

A reply is a comment, genius. Why are you talking about my balls? Sorry to disappoint you, dude. I don’t swing that way.

they are asking people who sit on their a** all day playing XBOX and they aren’t working.

    • KENNETH B

…said the guy leaving comments on Major Nelson’s blog.

  • pcedfeldt

Really interesting data. Would love to see the same detailed data on the first debate. Saw some news stories re: the first debate that XBL users favored Romney. This makes sense. He won that one hands down. Last night Biden won, and the polling presented here reflects that.

    • Avatar Roku

The polling from the first debate had Obama the winner by an overwhelming majority. Microsoft tried to keep the results quiet because the data was so embarrassingly bad. This doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out, the XBL audience is extremely young and liberal. Like polling Comedy Central viewers, this data is absolutely worthless to anyone who takes politics seriously.

Last night Biden embarrassed himself very badly, and only impressed extreme liberals with his obnoxious undignififed behavior. Interrupting your opponent 82 times in a debate is not how you win a debate, laughing and smiling as they discussed nuclear war, record unemployment numbers, and people without health insurance. Biden’s demeanor was completely offensive to any fair minded person. Even pointing his finger and yelling at the debate moderator was completely undignified. Absolutely repugnant display. Not how you win an argument.

      • ElektroDragon

Extremely well said. This poll is like asking naive babies if they like candy (government handouts).

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/FPWAW5F5BB675LSGY4RYW66VLM Matty

Faux News viewer! I guess you got your talking points lol

  • Avatar Roku

I watched the debate on XBL and the poll questions never came up on my screen at any time. Is that because I’m a conservative?

  • Avatar Roku

It’s not surprising, XBL audience skews very young and includes a ton of unlikely voters.

  • redgehammer

I am 42, and The 360 was where I watched the debates. Thanks Microsoft for the compelling way to watch the debates.

Showing the lies and the Love the Xbox has for Obama disgusts me, as of 3 mins ago romney is much more preferred than Obama, as is ryan to. Also my minor daughter who has a minor account and is 10 is able to watch this debate and vote to, so the polls have 90 percewnt minors voting on things they dont understand, they just voting on Obama due to they think hes cool. First question i got during first debate, who would you rather play xbox live with, really i want someone to fix America not play games with me. and Major nelson you suck your an old decrepit man that is not cool please kill your self

    • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

” First question i got during first debate, who would you rather play xbox live with, really i want someone to fix America not play games with me.” if you want someone to fix America get off your sofa and stop playing games and go help fix it yourself
It people like you who give Americans a bad name

  • blindalmighty

I’m a conservative, but I thought the debate sucked. Ryan looked intimidated and Biden was smug. Both looked un(vice)presidential. I would call it a draw, but I’m right wing bias so I guess Biden won? Still I thought it was bad overall and I learned nothing. Romney’s performance was the best of the four so far and he still has my vote. It’s really between Romney or not voting for me so I’ll see what happens. Also, I watched it on TV, but only because I didn’t realize Xbox was hosting it.

Xbox Live = Microsoft which = MSNBC which = Democrats and Obama followers.
