New Xbox 360 dashboard update starts rolling out today

Many of you have been involved in the 2012 Xbox LIVE Update Public Beta and have been busy getting an early look at the latest Xbox LIVE features. Today we’re starting to roll out the official release of the update to Xbox LIVE subscribers around the world. To ensure a stable release, this will be a gradual deployment across subscribers and regions over the course of the next week. Our initial deployment will reach approximately three million consoles worldwide, with additional users being updated over the course of a couple weeks. Don’t panic if you don’t see an immediate update, just keep checking back in.

In this update, you will see the following features.

  • Refreshed Xbox 360 Dashboard. We’ve updated the UI with a few things, including an updated layout with more tiles, a combined TV & Movies channel and, in the US, a Sports destination.
  • Internet Explorer for Xbox. With Internet Explorer on Xbox, you can easily find and view internet content on the biggest screen in the house, including HTML5 videos.
  • Recommendations and Ratings. Recommendations will allow you to discover new favorites, generated based on a number of variables including the content you previously viewed, what your friends are consuming and what is most relevant and popular with our Xbox community. You can now rate content yourself and also see Rotten Tomatoes ratings.
  • Pinning. Pinning lets you personalize the dashboard by saving your favorite movies, TV shows, games, music, videos and websites right to the home screen. It’s as easy as opening an app or a favorite movie and clicking “pin.”
  • Xbox Video. Formerly called Zune Video Marketplace, Xbox Video offers hundreds of thousands of TV shows and movies for buying or renting in instant HD streaming.
  • Recent. Previously called Quick Play, the Recent view gives you a list of movies, games, apps or other types of content that you most recently accessed on the console.
  • Enhanced Search. The last Xbox LIVE update brought Bing voice search to Xbox so you could use voice to search for movies, TV shows, actors, directors and artists. This year we added genre search to the list, so now you can search for action, comedy, romance, drama or sci-fi. Bing voice search now includes results for video across the Web, including YouTube.
  • International Expansion of Voice Search. We’ve expanded our Kinect voice search capabilities to 9 new countries – Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Ireland.

What about Xbox SmartGlass? That’s coming too, but not until Windows 8 launches on October 26th. When the Xbox SmartGlass app launches on tablets, PCs and smartphones, it will include key foundational experiences for interacting with your Xbox 360, such as dashboard and app navigation and Internet Explorer control, like text input, scrolling and pinch and zoom.

Yesterday, we shared all the details about Xbox Music, our brand new digital music service. Xbox Music begins rolling out today on Xbox 360, it will launch with free streaming on all Windows 8 PCs and tablets on October 26th and Windows Phone 8 as devices arrive in market. Xbox Music combines all the different ways people love to enjoy music, creating the ultimate all-in-one music service.

For all the details on Xbox Music, check out the Microsoft News Center.

The 2012 Xbox LIVE update is beginning its rollout today and we expect all Xbox LIVE subscribers to have access to the update in the coming days.

Nice one MS, it bricked my friends Xbox. “Disc read error”. Does your team actually test these things?

    • Jordan Mcdonald

yer i got that too, try ejecting the tray in n out while the error msg is displayed…
sometimes it thinks the tray is ejected when its not…

    • Lee Rayson

Could be worse, could be your xbox

    i never got the update………….

  • MrRadiolips

Instead of assuming that im “A die hard Valve-fan” ill let you know i have only recently been using steam for about a week now. Ive been using consoles since i was 4 and now im 34. I consider myself more of a die hard console fan. So who is eating their words now?

  • Xenokai

If you have issues connecting to live after the update be sure to disable the Play-To feature, its been known to cause connection issues.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nickinoshkosh Nick Jones

The biggest thing I’m hoping for is speed improvement. I really hate the long load times for the “quick play” section after the console is booted or taken back to the dashboard.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=554325079 Aaron Seddon

i’m not arsed about how it looks i just want it to load quicker, my 360 HDD has 100gb spare and still take a good 2 minutes to load up to the dashboard and allow me to look at my installed games!!!!

  • Josh Baxter

i still havent gotten the new update, whats up with that?

    • GERMIN4T0R

      Consider yourself lucky then.

  • Mark

I am deeply offended the new update is out BAN pirates but nobody wants to give. Each pirate on Xbox Live should be completely banned. It would have time to start banning people who play burned games online.

Otherwise, this is a very nice new DB even I would have liked some support Flash Player, or at least a plugin for IE that that they can view any website easily. By IE might be the ability to download pictures and video and audio files.

When I go through IE on youtube so not all videos can be played, it would be good to add the opportunity to work in multiple windows at once and not just one.

  • THizzle7XU

When I’m paying for the service just to connect to your servers (Xbox Gold), the non-game related ads that need to download and have sound that can’t be turned off when you scroll past them are bull sh*t.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DiosaIsyutaru Luna Azul

Hi major nelson, im from mexico but i still dont have the new dashboard, why is this???? several friends from mexico too, have it, why i dont?

So….what colour is the sky in your ripoff world?

    • http://twitter.com/Textstudios Text studios

WTF? im on xbox not ps3 u dumbass

  • http://twitter.com/SwimsuitHakufu Gavin Sherlock

I stil have not been prompted for the update, still.

  • http://www.facebook.com/WarlockUK Paul Brown

Is xbox live still enforcing Gold for people to access Netflix and other services they already pay for, via non-microsoft servers? That still seems a bit criminal tbh, to charge just to access a service.

Screw it, charge me a one-off fee for a proper xbmc that can do it all free.

    • Jordan Mcdonald

yer i want an ouya too…

  • Will

Still not got the update.. I just don’t understand the slow rollout. It’s one of the weirdest business decisions I’ve ever seen. I don’t know if it’s meant to be for saving server costs or what but ultimately it’s just strange. If Apple can release iOS 6 to 100s of millions of iPhones and iPads around the world at the same time, why is a couple of meg update taking 3 weeks to roll out. Just test it properly and put it out there. It’s made even worse by the fact MS are releasing their supposed big new Xbox Music service packaged with it, and although I doubt it’s going to take off, there are loads of people that regardless can’t access it.

If the suits keep dictating MS’ trajectory the future for it is going to be bleak. Right now all the 360 has to compete with is the PS3.. the Wii is just too old now and not really considerable as a full platform anymore. Next-Gen there’s going to be the WiiU, Ouya, PS4 and maybe another runner in the race, maybe in like 5 years time an Apple console even (maybe), yet MS seems to constantly constantly ignore it’s actual user base. I think it would be safe to say 99.9% of people do not like the ads. In the same way that if Windows 7 had unremovable ads on the desktop it would annoy users worldwide as well. If you go to the game marketplace then hell yeah, sure, tell me what games have just come out and what’s on special offer, but why are we being advertised loads of random stuff all over? Cars, broadband, beer, hair products.. it’s getting stupid and all of MS’ problems come purely down to one thing. The people who’s primary job is all about the money are the ones at the top dictating the decisions, and they aren’t the thinkers, they aren’t designers and they will snap at short term revenue because they can’t see the importance of creating a clear platform that will actually last.

I have hope for Xbox and it’s my chosen console but.. next-gen.. all it’s going to take is one company with a clear vision for a console that has a solid OS not puddled with ads and a genuine UI, along with some real insight and love for games and there’s going to be a lot of people jumping ship.

why havent i got the new dashnbard update im a gold member!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/richard.j.martin.313 Richard James Frank Martin

wow i can now use internet explorer (if you pay for liveGOLD) which i could do on my ps3 for free without a psn account of any kind… just another reason my xbox collects dust on the shelf… wow did you ruin xbox microsoft, its supposed to be a hardcore gaming console not some petty (look at me say movie and game names aloud to get to them) media center. :( love having my ps3 and the xbox but in the last 3 years i have seen no reason to even turn my xbox on anymore. :/

    • http://twitter.com/SwimsuitHakufu Gavin Sherlock

For real, the 360 is losing its edge as time goes on for me. I also like that I’m able to use my SSD on my ps3.

  • http://www.facebook.com/richard.j.martin.313 Richard James Frank Martin

actually i own both consoles and in the past xbox has went down WAY more times then the ps3’s network and even our month down from hackers is still no comparison to a few times that xbox live was down for months… but psn was only hacked because sony took a man to court who made a HACK so you can download games from the psn for FREE and anything else you wanna do where on xbox even if theres hackers they dont do anything because (they have it under control) but right now someone could be seeing your credit card info and anything else they can get their hands on and selling to other hackers… just waiting for the time to start racking up your visa

  • http://www.facebook.com/richard.j.martin.313 Richard James Frank Martin

lmfao your funny i just downloaded JUST CAUSE 2 free for ps+ members which was almost 5gb in 25mins or less…. ive used xbox live while hardwired and its just a mess. plus everything cost money money and guess what more money for the same stuff on the ps3 but in my case on the ps3 its free and i NEVER get glitches unless the host leaves a game or my wifi signal is kinda low. xbox live is not worth the money at all. trust me i have wasted lots on it.

I’m frustrated. As part of the beta, I know that pinning to the homescreen was the NUMBER ONE complaint and feedback – but nobody from MS seems to care, or even acknowledge that this is what people want “Pinning. Pinning lets you
personalize the dashboard by saving your favorite movies, TV shows,
games, music, videos and websites right to the home screen” NOPE. It lets you drill down to the pin screen, which might as well be your recent items screen that we use anyway.
As it stands, NOBODY navigates through the UI. The entire dashboard may as well be the recent items list. Blown opportunity. It’s frustrating to be in a beta where feedback is ignored wholesale. What’s the point?

If you bought an Xbox in the early days you paid around 400$
now on amazon or ebay you can get a 1 year card of Gold Live membership for about $40 to $45 dollars are you all that dirt poor you can afford 65$ dollar games but not a $40 membership card. Stop whining and go see the PS3 network experience, which will send you RUNNING back to the 360 to see how the online experience is properly done.

Now that I know weather you have to have GOLD for the browser, which is total BS imo, I think Ima switch to using a PS3 for Multiplats, and just use the box for exclusives and bethesda games, which are mostly all 1 player. Like I’ve come to the point where I’ma stop defending Xbox Live. The fact that you have Live Gold should eleminate all Adverts. Everytime I turn on my Xbox thers ads on every page, Like damn. And then on top of that I have to pay to use Netflix, Youtube, Facebook, or even just a simple internet browser. Microsoft, I’ve been a fan of the Xbox sice I was 8 years old (a decade ago), and I loved it when it was solely a gaming console and not much else. I sadly never got to experience the original xbox Live (due to it being $50 a year, and high speed internet was expensive back then). I saw a video of it the last day it was up, and it was such BEAUTIFUL sight. No effing adds. No facebook. No web browser. None of that extra BS that you try to sucker me into paying for today. All there was was 3 tabs, Account, Marketplace, and Friends. Why cant you go back to that and make it cheaper? I’m fine with paying for a secure connection to millions of other games to womp on that a$$, but all the other stuff should be free to use. It’s a shame. It’s a DAMN shame. :'(

    • Lee Rayson

try testing your network connection it may force the update

  • Lee Rayson

IE uses HTML5 no need for flash

  • Miles

Yeah, I got the update. Ugh.. just keeps getting worse and worse. Slower roll-out, MORE of those crappy tiles (ugh!)–meaning even SMALLER artwork for games, a half-working implementation of Internet Explorer, pinning (which doesn’t seem to work on a bunch of things like the video player app–what’s the point then?), a long much-needed rebranding of Zune video and Zune music to Xbox Video and Xbox Music (both of which aren’t free on XBox but will be free to Windows 8 users–why bother using the name Xbox then?)… all this AND it sometimes takes up to two minutes to start up (spinning circles at boot-up… and the forums seem to agree that lots of people are seeing this too) and to top it ALL off… I still gets ads on the Xbox’s interface despite the fact that I’m paying yearly fees to use XBOX Live. Are you kidding me? It feels worse with every update, instead of better.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gajdadk Andreas Gajda Kristensen

HI, no update in Denmark. When is it coming?

  • Steven Hogg

Well it is now 12:25 on October 22nd 2012 here in the U.K and I STILL DO NOT have this update.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jamie.t.ashton.9 Jamie Thfc Ashton

Don’t worry mate I ain’t got it either… We wil all have it before the 26th so I’m not to worried… Pissed off though as I’m do impatient!!! Can’t wait to use smartglass!!!
