Announcing the Halo 4 War Games Pass

343 Industries has announced the ‘Halo 4’ War Games Pass.

Here are the details from the press release that just went out:

With the highly anticipated launch of “Halo 4” on Nov. 6 less than two weeks away, Microsoft and 343 Industries today unveiled that there will be more content to come in the months post-launch, and the “Halo 4” War Games Map Pass is your ticket to getting it all at a 15 percent discount. Stoking the excitement for launch, 343 Industries also premiered the gameplay launch trailer for “Halo 4, available now on Halo Waypoint.

Retailing for $24.99 USD² (2,000 Microsoft Points), the “Halo 4” War Games Map Pass confirms your access to three War Games map packs as they become available in December, February and April, and represents a savings of more than 15 percent versus purchasing the packs individually. In addition, Map Pass purchasers will receive two bonus in-game helmets, as well as a unique in-game emblem.

Exploring new worlds and wonders, all three Map Packs provide classic “Halo” combat and exciting ways to experience the new feature-set of “Halo” Infinity Multiplayer. Descriptions and tentative release dates are as follows:

Crimson Map Pack (December release timeframe)

Maps: Wreckage, Harvest, Shatter

Description: Witness the chaos of a clash of civilizations in Wreckage, with its blend of claustrophobic spaces and dangerous exposures and venture into the human colony environs of Harvest, and explore a human foray on an alien moon in Shatter.

Majestic Map Pack (February release timeframe)

Maps: Landfall, Monolith, Skyline

Description: Landfall’s emphasis is on infantry battles against a glittering ocean on a distant world, while Monolith exposes you to the naked vacuum of space – and the firepower of opposing teams, and Skyline’s distinctly industrial feel provides new challenges in somewhat familiar, but occasionally confined spaces.

Castle Map Pack (April release timeframe)

Maps: Daybreak, Outcast, Perdition

Description: Daybreak is set in a military facility against the backdrop of an idyllic mountain range, while Outcast plunges you into the warrens, canyons and arches of an alien edifice, and Perdition takes players into the heart of an urban sprawl, with tactical speed and situational awareness its key features.

Also included in the “Halo 4” War Games Map Pass are two unique in-game helmets (‘Scanner’ and ‘Strider’) that feature new geometry, and an exclusive in-game emblem (‘Falcon’). The “Halo 4” War Games Map Pass is included as part of the Halo 4 Limited Edition.

I kind of expected something like this was coming since I knew there were three map packs included with the Collector’s Edition.

I find it interesting that the news lists the price in dollars, which isn’t something I normally see in Xbox news from Microsoft. They normally stick to just Microsoft Points.

On one hand, it’s nice to have a single currency price for every region, but on the other hand, if they were to drop MS points, I’d probably start saving money, because they never adjusted MS Points here in Canada when our dollar became even with the US, so Marketplace items are still more expensive here than they should be.

      I think the schedule, the announcing of DLC before, or around launch, and season passes has more to do with the used games market.
      
      They know that, for most games, they have a short window of opportunity to get people to stay invested for the long haul, before they finish the game, and trade it in while it’s still worth something.
      
      So, they plan at least the first DLC to be out quickly, they announce it prior to launch, and they offer the season pass up front in hopes that it will convince people to keep the game long enough to see that new content (which they’ll be more likely to do if they have already pre-paid for it with the season pass… And they’ll be more likely to buy the season pass while they’re still really into the game up front, instead of a couple of weeks later when they’ve moved onto something else), instead of trading it in.

The last sentence is wrong I believe. 343i said that the map pass in the LE was different than the one available on the marketplace. The LE one didn’t include helmets or an emblem. Plus I don’t think the Halo 4 console ever included the map pass.

didn’t ign do an unboxing of halo 4 console? all that came with it were the controllers and the console. no other contents were found. i’m pretty sure that the LE ($100) is the only one that comes with the pass.if the console bundle includes the pass i will be pretty angry ’cause that is giving to much to the buyer for $400.

Getting mixed messages now, we need some clarification. The additional items of 2 ingame helmets and emblem that comes with the Stand alone purchased War Games Pass, does this mean that the War Games Pass included in the LE version of the game also comes with these items as @halowaypoint has indicated otherwise

Also, up to now, the LE console has not come with the War Games Pass so has this now changed or is it a typo error and the console should have read LE version of game?

  yes….its called planning and lets be honest, we are talking map packs not full on Story driven or Expansion pack level DLC here, its not that much of a stretch to know they have planned out MP Map packs during the games development

  They plan this stuff in advance but only start working on it after the game has gone for certification. At that point they can’t add new code to the game (otherwise it requires recertification) so it becomes dlc. It _is_ added content and not stuff they already did for the game.
  But ultimately you vote with your $s. If you really hate this practice then don’t buy the game or the dlc to show how you won’t support it.

I wish the release dates were a little more spaced out. The 3rd pack’s gonna be out in April? So all the maps are going to be out in a 5 month period, whereas they could have stretched it a little bit and have the 3rd one out in May/June and the first one in January.

Oh well, now I have to split time between the first map pack and Aftermath (I think that’s the name) for BF3, which also comes out in December

Xbox Support on Twitter have replied to my question, they have not confirmed it as yet, but they believe that the pass in the LE game will be the same pass as on the Marketplace so we should get the items

Wouldn’t a good estimate for whether or not the LE Game and the Standalone pass are different as far as bonus content be to check the XBL Marketplace for the Pass? I don’t know if it is up yet but unboxing videos of the game have shown that the LE Game comes with XBL Marketplace code for the Map Pass. So if it’s a code it is usually either one of two things. One, there could be two different Map Passes on XBL. One that is 999999 MS Points and one that is 2000 (which I think is silly) OR there is just one. I’m sure there could be two and one is just hidden from the storefront but it’s doubtful to me that they would make them separate items. The code is likely just a voucher for the product that others will pay for separately. That’s the way other games have handled this model in the past.

I believe it is never a bright idea to announce this stuff early. While it is expected, I cancelled my Borderlands 2 preorder in the same situation. With that game I was right, I thought the game was pushing average DLC as a full game because you have to level up and do fetch quests up the arse. About as exciting as watching Felicia Day attempt to act or look attractive.

Not sure if I want Halo 4 after this. Why do they announce this before a game’s release? I know I am not alone.

  They announce it early in hopes that more people will buy the season pass at launch if they know exactly what is coming, and a rough idea of when. They make the season pass available right at launch, in hopes that people will buy into it while they’re still super excited about the game, thus deciding a couple of weeks later when they’ve moved onto something else not to sell the game back to a local retailer, because they know they’ve already paid for all of this extra content that they haven’t gotten yet.
  
  I’m doubtful that it works as designed on very many people, and there are certainly some, like yourself, that get turned off of the product by it, but that’s the idea behind it.

What I don’t get is, why make Capture the Flag an escort type of match? The most fun is doing varied attacks on the base, and have one guy sneak in and try and get away. Now, with promethean vision, and a waypoint on the flag carrier, it makes no sense!
Add in the fact that Cortana dies, Chief goes to Earth alone, Didact is alive and preparing the Forerunners for all-out war with humanity, this game is shaping up to be Call of Duty: Halo Edition.
Seriously, perks, killstreak/ordnance, killcams, no friendly fire, etc.

The whole locked on Disc argument bores me. You think that because its on the disc that you own it, but its not different then buying Rock band, because a song you really like is shown on the track list but you discover you have unlock it by playing the 30 songs before it…thats locked away content on the disc, but you dont see a campaign to change that?

There is a final retail version of the game you get access too, the rest is locked away to be unlocked later even its deemed as DLC so you just purchase an unlock code

I don’t believe this is correct. I believe the Map Pass that comes with the LE will NOT contain the bonus helmets that would come with the individual purchase of the Map Pass, but I could be wrong.
