Audio of the Original Xbox dashboard

I found this in my audio archives, It is the sound of the original Xbox dashboard as you transitioned from one screen to another. This was taken from the master audio file.

I’ve posted photos of what the old dashboard looks like on my Flickr

Update: I have located the boot up sound of the original Xbox:

Or if you have the original Xbox like me you can switch it on and gaze at all it’s green glory. Plus play a few games that aren’t backwards compatible on the 360 as well if it takes your fancy.

Like MVP 2005. Still one of the best baseball games ever made

Panzer Dragoon Orta for me. There was a 360 backcompat glitch where the cutscene before Chapter 4 would crash the game and this was never fixed in the PAL version.

    nice

A free, classic theme based on the first Xbox’s dash would have been pretty cool.

    • The Dukenator

That would be nice. I think there are some Xbox Live is 5 themes still around today.

      • http://twitter.com/Navarin Bennijin

Yeah, when Xbox Originals launched a bunch of themes came out with it. They don’t work great on dashes since Blades, mind.

how about the voices in the background that sounded like aliens that was awesome

Let me see if I have that anywhere. Trivia: It was actually public domain audio from NASA transmissions from the Apollo days that we tweaked for that sound.

      • EvanTheGamer

        That’s AWESOME!

Hahaha that is pretty epic! NASA inside Xbox ^_^

        • http://twitter.com/Navarin Bennijin

And with the Curiosity landing it came full circle!

          • http://twitter.com/Renagade313 Corey R.

I was thinking after all that, that they were going to add a nasa channel app. That would be cool..

  • EvanTheGamer

I miss that sound. I really, really do.

  • The Dukenator

Some original xbox games will have a version of the dashboard in them.

  • Smokex365

New notification for my droid…I think yes!

I partically remember the sounds from the first xbox360 dashboard. When I was bored/waiting I would just spam the left and right shoulder buttons to go back and forth between the blades. The sound it made was strangely addictive.

While we are digging up old stuff, how about an Xbox live arcade release of Midtown Madness 3? I would love to be able to play hunter online again

Or ReVolt. Only released in the beta. Fun game.

I don’t see them being behind. If anything they are ahead at least in the US. They can’t buy out sony because most people who oversee mergers wouldn’t allow it. It would be anti-competitive and create a monopolistic situation that would stifle innovation. Last but not least (I’m not defending them here) they may charge whatever they want for the service. If you don’t like it then don’t pay for it. Go over to PS3 where it is still free while it lasts.

On that note Sony is toying with the idea of making the PS3 online pay only as well. If not on the PS3 then on the PS4 when it comes out. That’s why they have had PSN+ for so long. To test the waters and see how many would buy into it and it isn’t good for those that like the free option.

Tip of the day: Don’t pay full rate if you don’t have to. Pre-pay cards are on sale all the time. Find some place that is offering it below the normal rate and go that way. I’m paid to Jan 2014 and I never paid full price. Never paid more than $50 for a year. Heck at one point I paid $12 for a year.

I have 2 original xbox 360s sitting at work. Both with xenon revision boards (the first ones) and revived so that they boot again. They both still have the original pre-nxe dash style. I think the one was in a closet for quite a while as it may of died very early and no one though to send it in to get replaced since the original warranty was out and the 3 year warranty for RROD came later.

I still hear that sound regularly since I use my original Xbox as a DVD player for the bedroom. :)

  • Lee Rayson

For me it been a long time hearing this sound…anymore old stuff for us?

  • Mark

I loved my old Xbox and playing NFL 2K5, still the best NFL game ever. EA then got exclusive rights and put the kebash on that.

  • Isaac Quinonez

Do you have the sound of the original xbox booting up?

    • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

Just found it and posted it above

      • Isaac Quinonez

        Thank you sir. Much obliged.

      • http://twitter.com/Alimaggs Ali Maggs

Awesome :). Now, how about reissuing some of those massive controllers as part of the 10th anniversary too – they might still be the comfiest controller I ever used. Seriously.

  • http://twitter.com/Navarin Bennijin

Aww YES. Wouldn’t mind an “alternative” bootup screen hidden in a dash update, MS. Think like how the GameCube had alternative bootups if you held Z on one or four controllers.

  • Jacob

Hey Major Nelson put an ad on Xbox Live that makes your Xbox 360 dash like the old Xbox dash just to be fun and interactive once you press it load up the old Xbox start up video and then you can move around the old Xbox live dash

  • http://twitter.com/karlcramer Karl Cramer

You should send those files to the Windows Phone’s official Insider app so they can be easily shared as ringtones.
