Halo 4 Crimson Map Pack Adds Three New War Games Battlefields and New Game Type on Dec.10

Halo 4

The first of three Halo 4 map packs is coming Dec 10th for 800 points. Here are the details:

  • Wreckage: Wreckage is the manifestation of the chaos of war. A medium-sized, asymmetrical map great for accommodating a wide range of objective-based game modes including King of the Hill and Capture the Flag, it is a ravaged environment of crashed debris, where the surrounding destruction creates complex paths perfect for throwing off your opponents, or testing the limits of your Warthog. This devastated landscape provides plenty of cover, and tons of nooks and crannies are at your disposal while fighting for your turn to become King. Wreckage supports up to 16 players in Infinity Slayer and up to 12 players in a variety of other modes, including Capture the Flag, King of the Hill and Oddball.
  • Harvest: Harvest is a canon concept brought to life – the doomed agricultural planet where humans first made contact with the Covenant. A small to mid-size map, Harvest is ideal for Capture the Flag. Here, you’ll need to get creative to effectively use light vehicles which are limited to the exterior pathways and can’t get into the bases, making this map perfect for infantry firefights and face-to-face skirmishes. Snipers will also feel right at home; long sightlines are broken up by great cover and hiding spots. Harvest allows up to 12 players to face off in Capture the Flag, Infinity Slayer, King of the Hill, SWAT and Slayer Pro.
  • Shatter:  Shatter is themed around natural crystalline surfaces and the huge UNSC factories mining them. This large, symmetrical map is a playground for the Warthog and Mantis – its open pathways make it easy to get around, whether on foot or in vehicles. Shatter is a great fit for Dominion and the new game type Extraction. For some close-quarters face-time, escape the open landscape and duck into a mining facility, or slip through a doorway and hunt unsuspecting Spartans. This map has variety for different types of players. Shatter enables multiplayer mayhem for up to 16 players in Infinity Slayer and up to 12 players in other modes, such as Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Dominion and Extraction.

Available this December on Xbox LIVE for 800 Microsoft points, the Crimson Map Pack is the first of three upcoming “Halo 4” War Games add-ons, and will include eight all-new Achievements worth a total of 250 Gamerscore. Players who purchase the “Halo 4” War Games Map Pass* or “Halo 4” Limited Edition will receive access to all three map packs as they become available in December, February and April at a 15 percent savings versus purchasing them individually based on ESRP.

Crimson Map Pack owners will have exclusive access to a single premium playlist that will only feature the new maps and will be the only place players can enjoy unique 6 vs. 6 matchmaking experiences, the new game type “Extraction,” and a wide range of voting combinations for different maps and modes.

In addition to the Crimson Map Pack, 343 Industries today unveiled “Extraction,” a new game type that will be introduced to “Halo 4” online matchmaking day and date with the map pack on Dec. 10:

  • Extraction: Extraction is a 5 vs. 5 objective-based game type where opposing Spartan teams are tasked with extracting assets from various sites around the map. Once a team has found a site and is in position, they must plant their beacon and protect it from the opposing team while the extraction process occurs. If the defending team remains in control of the beacon, they receive one point, however if the opposing team overtakes the site before extraction is complete, the point goes to them. Once a site has been extracted, a new site becomes available. The first team to extract five points wins.

The question on everyone’s mind — how are these maps in regards to Forge?

    • yourselvs

By looking at the Flickr photos, it seems most of these (except the finite terrain) were built by forge.

  • Jake

I thought Extraction was included with the launch of Halo 4. I guess it’s “new” meaning that they’ll have playlists with that gametype in them now.

Advertising it as “new” is misleading…

    • this_is_my_humble_opinion

Tell me about it, I’ve been forging extraction maps and playing them for a while now… decent mode but I rather play classic territories which is quite simliar.

  • pastormatt

I really wish all of my map packs from Reach and Halo 3 were useful still. Would be cool if they could be transfered to Halo 4. Since I’ll only play Halo 4 for probably 6 months to a year it makes purchasing maps that won’t be useful in the future as a waste….

    • Chris Grub

By that logic buying Halo 4 was a waste too… you know since you’re only going to play it 6 months to a year and won’t believe that it’s useful in the future..

      • Curtis Isabell

halo 4 is useless already, it was boring the first week it came out, if it had all the maps from past halo games it wouldn’t be as boring.

        • Wei Yang

I never understood people who wanted old maps; I mean, they’ve already been recycled like 4 times. Just give me new maps please.

          • Adam Thompson

But even better than that is all new + all old maps.

      • pastormatt

It could be something like how Dance Central 2 played well with Dance Central 1. For a very small fee you could get all of the original tracks from your older game in the new, updated game. I understand that Halo 4 probably uses some different tech and was made for different abilities and weapons, but it makes me sad to think I spent $15 on maps for Halo Reach thinking it would be the end-all be-all Halo game. I’m not lead to buy maps for Halo since it will probably be replaced in a year or two. Same reason I don’t buy maps for COD games. Sure, if I sunk hundreds of hours into the game, then sure–I’d probably buy them. But as that’s not the case, I’ll just save my spare dollars for the next game to come out.

  • RJ Marchetti

isn’t extraction already in the playlist rotation? I could have sworn I’ve played that gametype before

  • Curtis Isabell

oh look, lets split the halo community with map packs again, so less and less people play in general. also $3.33 for 1 map is kinda absurd when making a good map only takes a small team a few days. it should be no more then $1 per map.

    • QuixoticRocket

It takes more than “a small team a few days”. Maybe to initially throw together a map. But to get the final art assets and to playtest and balance the map takes a while.
It’s not as simple as it sounds.

    • Bennijin

Map packs ruined Reach’s matchmaking. Or rather, 343’s inability to make sure people who bought the maps could regularly play on them in matchmaking ruined it.

There’s little opportunity to play the DLC maps in Reach because it would match you with players that didn’t own them. They better make sure that doesn’t happen again.

  • David Lešiga

What about Forge maps in Halo4? I have War Game passs, but i think, this game need more maps, because now with only 5 maps in playlist… but I still love Halo 4 <3 :D

    • Steve Melton

Seconded. The power of the updated Forge is impressive. The map templates to build from, however, were less so. I still like the maps, but we need one more that is a bit simpler geographically but has a bigger budget and variety of pieces.

  • Lee Rayson

    No screenshots Major ?

    • QuixoticRocket

he has a link to his flickr with screenshots and the link says “I’ve got screenshots posted on my Flickr” so… yeah

      • Lee Rayson

missed that part due to it being a link

  • Shane St Louis

I purchased limited edition, the ad on ebgames said the maps would be free, now larry says 15% off, is this a typo? cus I bought limited edition for the free mappacks not at 15% off…

    • QuixoticRocket

If I understand correctly: you get them free if you have the pass.
If you buy the pass then overall you will be saving 15% when compared to buying each pack individually.
Since you have the pass from the LE you’ll be getting them “free” (you’ve paid for it in the cost of the LE already.. kinda).
      Does that make sense?

      • Bennijin

Yep, War Games Pass is part of the Infinity Pack that came with the Limited Edition.

The War Games Pass is still listen on the marketplace though meaning it’s possible to own it twice, something Microsoft is in no hurry to address.

        • QuixoticRocket

Yeah. It’s still in the store so people can still buy it, but it should say “already own” when you browse to it and it should stop you from buying the included maps separately.
At least there’s a warning saying “you’ll be charged twice” but they could do a little more to safeguard it. I can see some people accidentally buying it twice.

          • Lee Rayson

They don’t need to safeguard it anymore, if you bought the limited edition you should know what the pass is you got with it and not make a mistake of buying another one, if people have done that they are a bit simple in the head because in the Description of the pass on the marketplace it says “Map Pass included with Halo 4 Limited Edition”

          • Bennijin

“a bit simple in the head”

            Or like twelve. Usually both.

          • QuixoticRocket

Yeah. This is primarily what I was thinking.
            Or drunk.
Mistakes happen. It’s not required to be user friendly but it’s a nice touch.

          • Lee Rayson

Good Point, either way they shouldn’t be playing Halo :P

        • Cam Blumreisinger

Well, in that case, how do I get the maps? Because it keeps telling me that I need to pay 2k microsoft points… And I got the LE.

          • Bennijin

Don’t buy that pass. When the maps come out you’ll be able to download them through the game menu as if you had the War Games pass, assuming you redeemed the Infinity pass. The one that gave you the Recruit PRIME skins and some emblems.

          • Jordan Sweigard

The 1st of the 3 Map Packs (Crimson) comes out on December 10th. Read the whole thing including the Title of the page.

    • Guest

Yeah me too! I swore they said “The first 3 map packs free” and I was like, hey! Bonus! Cause I wanted the map packs anyways. What is this %15 garbage?

  • Nathan Mallory

hi do you know how to vist other peoples maps on halo 4

  • Steven Cady

I thought that the limited edition gave you these map packs for free once they come out…which is one of the reasons I bought the flippin thing.
