PSA: Proof Up for Gamer Safety Week

Today marks the start to the second annual Gamer Safety Week. This year, Xbox and our partners in the Gamer Safety Alliance hope you’ll take some time to focus on “account safety and security in the online world.” You spend years building your online reputation. If someone you don’t know or trust gains access to your account, they can wipe out that reputation in no time at all. Don’t wait. Take a few minutes now to help ensure your accounts are protected.

If you haven’t already, start by adding security proofs like phone numbers, alternate email addresses, and security questions and answers to your accounts. If one of your accounts is vulnerable, your entire online identity may be at risk, so it’s important to add proofs to all your online accounts where available. Be sure to check your security information from time to time to make sure you have access to your proofs should you ever need them.

Taking simple steps like these can help prevent your online experience from turning into a headache if someone tries to hijack your accounts.

So this Gamer Safety Week take a moment and proof up.

I love the measures Xbox has taken for security. It’s so pathetic when I beat someone at Call of Duty and they threaten to hack my account.

99.999% of those people who actually will try to do anything just ddos you anyways.

      • QuixoticRocket

Because real hackers run a precompiled ddos application right?.. -sigh-

Note: I’m not claiming to be a hacker (I’m not. I wouldn’t really know where to start) but I certainly wouldn’t call myself one after running a ddos app either.

I do love the security of my Microsoft ID, it all runs through my cell number so without my phone you cant change any information without me getting texts telling me about it
    Thank you

“cell number” – pretending to be American now?

      • https://live.xbox.com/MyXbox/Profile?gamertag=DarkGin87 Lee Rayson (DarkGin87)

“cell number” is lingo I picked up from my girlfriend.

        • BigBernard

Online “girlfriend” who you’ve never met then? I see.

      • QuixoticRocket

Or South African… Or any of the numerous places that call it a cellphone and not a mobile.

        • Nate

What people say and how they say it changes even within the US, I call it a cell phone. Unless you meant to say cell number.

          • QuixoticRocket

I’m just pointing out that there are lots of places that call it a cellphone (or cell number) and not just USA. Using the term “cell number” isn’t indicative of pretending to be anything in particular. Personally I don’t like the term “mobile” even though I live in the UK. To me a mobile phone is a portable handset with the base plugged into the wall. But to each their own.

          • Nate

Alright I see what you’re saying

    • The Dukenator

Then you lose your phone and end up having to change the number used for the account.

      • https://live.xbox.com/MyXbox/Profile?gamertag=DarkGin87 Lee Rayson (DarkGin87)

I’ve had the same number with o2 since before they were o2 an never lost my phone but if I did I have 2trusted pcs an now the surface as a back up

        • The Dukenator

Just a side note, Sony doesn’t do this for PSN. Yes, they told me when I contacted them one day about something else.

          • https://live.xbox.com/MyXbox/Profile?gamertag=DarkGin87 Lee Rayson (DarkGin87)

Well I can understand why PSN doesn’t do it. Microsoft has built all this security around your e-mail/windows ID. I don’t know what it be like if you used a 3rd party e-mail.

          • The Dukenator

The email I use for the Windows ID is a Yahoo email. Yet, I had Hotmail for 10+ years, which I use less now.

          • https://live.xbox.com/MyXbox/Profile?gamertag=DarkGin87 Lee Rayson (DarkGin87)

With your yahoo do you get to have proofs? I stop using yahoo mail along time ago more spam than anything beside the closing most the best features of yahoo which why I stuck with Hotmail/windows live ID

          • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

I wouldn’t expect anything like this from such a bare bones and lax free service like PSN. Again just goes to show you get what you pay for with XBL.. :)

For Gamer Safety Week, I promise to keep my controller out of the hands of a minor, to make sure my controller isn’t loaded when I clean it, and to promise never to use my controller in anger, only for sport. (But if someone tries to break into my house, I will throw my controller at them as hard as I can. It’s my right to protect my property.)
