    Picking up a PS3 this week and test driving the online. I’ve been a subscriber since day 1 (paid into the beta testing for Canada) and after more than 10 years, few perks, lots of paywalls and not getting a bone thrown my way for being a 10 year subscriber, I’m taking the plunge on Playstation (and I was never a fan of PS/PS2). If the experience is close enough, this may be the last year I’m a gold subscriber. Its hard to believe (even for me).

        that was maybe the case a while back, but now it has improved a lot. Never had the problems youre describing there, never heard somebody with that kind of desciption. its more bordeline fanboyish than anything real.

        i have a PS3 and ive been playing a lot on it. next gen im going with PS4 (or steambox, lets see how that pans out), mainly because there are no xbox exclusives i care about (halo/fable/forza/gears), and the online doesnt cost me the price of 1 game, and i dont have to pay to browse the web and install a custom wallpaper.

        if a lot of people jump ship the next gen, microsoft is the only one to blame. they started this gen really well (i went xbox), but this final stretch is just bordeline pathetic. Hope that steve ballmer gets fired asap, the guy is ruining th company ive known for 20 years

        ps: hope to see REZ HD in a deal again, someday ;-)

            Don’t worry about what they say ungeheier, if you heard my PS3 horror story, these people who love patting Sony on the back would say the same things about me. What people don’t understand is that it’s totally natural to come off as pissed and biased when a certain console and service has failed to meet our expectations like PSN, PSN+, and the PS3 has disappointed me.
            While there are many things about the 360 and live I don’t like, it doesn’t even compare to the multitude of cons the ps3 provides.

            7. Horrible system sofware and file system that freezes up the console on the slightest whim.

            8. Gimped multiplats nearly 80% of the time
            9. Lack of 3rd party multiplats, where is left for dead and many other 3rd party games that PS3 doesnt get.

            1 is true and is one of the biggest complaints by ps3 users, most games do have demos though

            Timed DLC matters and wheter you admit it or not, It’s still a con to gaming on the PS3.

I suggest getting some corrective contact lenses because I rent multiplats for both systems all the time, the last one being Sleeping dogs. All you need to do is switch your hdmi input on your tv from your ps3 to 360 to find out.
            It isn’t just Left4Dead that you guys don’t have access too, there are more… atleast a half dozen that really isn’t worth my time to look up.
            Skyrim says hello wasn’t meant to be a point and you know it! :) Point is, Sony fucked themselves with Cell and developers just don’t want to take the time to optimise anything on your console of choice and rightfully so since it is a FACT that 3rd party multiplats sell better on 360.. Not to mention look and perform better too.

            the difference between most ps3 and 360 games is minor graphical differences that you couldn’t see unless you had a side by side comparison.

            and it isn’t just left for dead? the 360 exclusive list of good titles is very small I think the witcher 2 was the last remotely good 3rd party exclusive title, and honestly the devs said they wanted to make it for ps3 as well but couldn’t put the man hours into it and picked xbox since its more like pc. yea cell was a bad choice but here is one for you, since they wont be using cell again, and more people buy PS over xbox now, next gen it stands for PS to have the better 3rd party as well…

But all my friends actually think its a great service, and are happy with it, and has proven to be a system seeler among them. for the price of Live Gold, they get free games during the sub period. So no, its really just your opinion among millions of others.

            fact is, sony is about to overtake the xbox in total worldwide sales, so all isnt so bad as youre making it. unless youre so selfcentred and think that the world revolves around you. but then again, your username clearly shows that, no matter what, you just dont care about facts and othet peoples opinions, so i wont bother anymore

            I thought Sony already took MS in worldwide sales? Eitherway, I won’t believe it untill VGchartz says so. It is entirely possible though as the two are literally neck and neck! :) Personally I love all consoles and this is the first generation where I have ever felt the need to bash one. My gaming goes way back to the Oddysee 2 system as well.

        Well, when you get a gamer profile the size of mine, especially if most of your arcade games are purchased on another family console, the 360 slows to a crawl. We’re talking minutes of spinning circles for just about ANYTHING to load. PS3 meanwhile is blazing fast.

          this happens me too, dashboard takes about a minute to load, try recovering a 20mb profile to another xbox it takes about an hour its slightly better since cloud but not by much.

            its is better now… but yeah, thats a major problem with the 360′s interface. but at last there’s the option to pin stuff :-P helps to sort the “want to play” from the other 99 arcade games

            the ps3 is faster, you can create playlists, doesnt have advertising splashed all over the place, and you can just upload your own wallpapers, instead of having to purchase them :-P …dont you love Micro$oft’s vision of a closed system?!?!?! :-S

            I had similar issues but only started when 360 used the advertisement dashboard. if i shift between the tabs too much the 360 just freezes…..

          PS3 is a lot faster for finding content your HDD than the Xbox 360. For whatever reason on the dashboard, if I open the guide menu it’ll take a few seconds just to load up the menu and then another 6-10 to open the friends list.

          of course its not like that. a lot of people around here say they own the PS3, but never actually even played on one… or did did, like ages ago at a friends house. but that doesnt stop them from saying they do own one, just to help them with their argument. i also have a PS3, and a lot of problems that were mentioned here is stuff from the begining of the PS3′s life-cycle… a bit like the 360´s RROD. people are still, to this day, talking about that “xbox issue”, even though it has been fixed

            The point is, RROD is old news and hasn’t been a widespread problem for years now. The PS3 is a very nice console but the original models didn’t go without their problems either. There was the yellow light of death that a few of my friends got.

        That’s the same reason I stopped using my PS3. I bought my PS3 before my Xbox 360 and it was my preferred console for a while. After a while the updates just get ridiculous and unless I’m using the console all the time then I’m going to have to spend hours on the console and then the games updating. Before the updates are finished I’m no longer interested in playing the game or using the console.

        If they actually improved updates then I’d consider going back to it despite finding the control pad far too small and inconvenient these days compared to the 360 pad. The PS3 has a lot of great exclusives, especially RPGs that I’d love to experience.

          Exactly, and in some cases the Download/Install process completely locks up your PS3 from being used. In the case that I stated above, it took HOURS for the whole process to finish. By the time it was done I was tired and had no desire to play the game I just purchased.

            castle crashers 140MB xbox 1min 31 seconds.
            castle crashers 155MB ps3 0min 52 seconds.

            the ps3 version did have to install after download which was quicker than the download itself.

            im actually shocked with this

            I would do the same so we can compare but I don’t have access to a PS3 at the moment. My results for download speeds between the two systems can range from PSN being 2 to 4x as slow depending on the time of day and the content.
            Anyhow If you do test it out, let us know the results! :)

            Sony’s servers aren’t very fast, at least that’s the experience I know many have in the UK. My Xbox 360 updates everything quickly and it’s pain free. My PC isn’t just as fast with updates but it’s much faster than PS3 updates, I can update many things at the same time and perform other tasks on my PC while it’s updating stuff.

            I do like the PS3 but my time is a little more limited these days and long updates aren’t enjoyable to wait on.

        you forgot the part where the reason it takes time to update games on ps3 is because sony allows games to be patched without charging them money to re-certify the game, so when xbox gets an update it’s usually not really a game patch (people don’t realize this)

        PS3 if you get an update, it’s an actual update, the download speeds on psn are slower than 360, but it’s not as bad as people make it out to be, I downloaded 2 things from both consoles at the same time and the 360 was about 30% faster at downloading files, which was the difference between about 10 minutes or xbox and 12 minutes for ps3… woop dee doo.

        the process of patching games takes about 5 minutes in total for ps3 depending on size usually it’s enough time to get a drink and come back. again it depends on the size of the files, I put in socom and had like 1 gb of patches which took about 15 mins, but then I started up little big planet 2 and got like 300mb and it took like 5.

      welcome to playstation 3, as someone who only switched over in the last few years i’d like to direct you to some quality titles

      I am assuming you live in NA, if you live in EU it’s a bit different though but still awesome ( usually better actually)

      First off get PSN+, 1 year is $50, and a promotion going on gives you an extra 3 months as well. With PSN+ you will get some good games free, as well as actual sales. 2 of the free games you will want are infamous 2 and little big planet 2, but they are free so at the very least add them to your cart and “checkout” in the store so you can download them whenever you want I recommend you check back every Wednesday at least for new free titles once they are tied to your account a long as you remain a PSN+ member you can download and play these titles.

      saleswise there isn’t much going on ps3 this week, a few weeks ago you missed the little big planet karting for $10 deal ( it’s a full game). the PSN store update tuesday night in the NA region.

      some quality titles on PSN are
      Fat princess (if you buy off best buys website it’s $8) for $15, it’s a fun title, play the demo though

      Dust 514, a free FPS shooter/MMOG hybrid. it’s only in beta but free for everyone who downloads it.

      If you are a final fantasy fan many of the classic titles are on sale right now even if you are not a PSN+ member, FF7 for example is $5 as well as 8 and 9. $5 seems like a lot but the disk version of the game for ps1 goes for like $20 in places, make sure it says “ps3″ when you buy it as some title are for psp or psvita only.

      the MMO DC universe online is free for all on ps3, the file is very large though and takes forever to download and update. if you like MMOs though it isn’t bad

      For PSN+ members (i’m looking at what we got at this point in time in NA) guardians of middle earth, darksiders 1, retro city rampage, quantum conundrum, dungeon defenders, pay day the heist, infamous 2 and little big planet 2 are all free for PSN+ members. there are other titles a well but seriously you should get all those titles.

      the way PSN+ works confuses people, but it’s simple to explain. free titles are free as long as you are a member, so if you stop paying, you can’t use the free titles, but anything you bought with $ on sale or not you keep. people call it rentals, but how many games do you have that you play for more than a month? the sample you get with PSN+ is phenomenal I have hardly bought anything for ps3 since getting PSN+ since I just get new games every few weeks.

      Oh yea something else you might wanna check out is PSN home, think of it as 2nd life or sort alike the sims I guess, you make a dude and visit areas play mini games ect. it’s kinda dumb but it can pass by some time, most of the stuff in PSNhome is free to an extent usually it’s like facebook game style cash shop, but there are some good things to look at like game videos.

    Why can’t we get a mix of discounted DLC and Arcade games? XBL is packed with old arcade games that are really good and you never see them on sale, this goes for DLC content too.

    Its always the same recycling of content, there is nothing worth buying anymore here (which isn’t a good thing if I was you Microsoft).

      They really should just permanently discount the prices of the content that keeps going on sale and then pull out various titles and dlc, old and new alike from their huge library of XBLA and Games on Demand titles. While they’re at it, they should highlight a few good indie games each week.

      There’s some fantastic titles in the indie games marketplace that could really do with being placed in the spotlight every now and then instead of being lost in the crowd of terrible games.

        At this point I don’t even think they care what goes on sale or not.

        Like the whole of XBL it just seems like its losing its steam, were seeing less content being released which could tie in to the future release of the next generation of consoles.

        Why they keep charging the same price for content and games released 2, 4 and even 6 years ago just goes to show the new era of digital only is going to stink.

          PC digital has things much cheaper, it’s sad MS won’t even try to get similar prices. sadly i’m going to have to avoid the next xbox and get pc or the next playstation.

            Yep but things have a chance to change next gen. The PC pricing market is very competitive and if the next Xbox is taking the route of forcing installs and activation keys then they’ll be forced to go down a similar route of allowing retailers and other sites to sell their content since they’ll need companies to stock their console. Activation keys would also force retailers into reducing prices and having more sales to gain an edge on their competitors.

            If the Steambox manages to improve their UI (the current big picture mode UI is really lackluster), gain some traction when it comes to media with a library of apps, movies and tv shows of their own then they could prove to be a serious competitor to Sony, MS and Nintendo in the living room. Depending on how well it does, it could force MS to rethink their pricing strategy next gen.

            If things don’t change, I’ll still be getting the next Xbox. As it is, I’m getting pretty invested in the Xbox ecosystem and I use the Kinect so much these days that it doesn’t feel right using a console without that functionality. Even just navigation is made easier for me as I have more options. Still I can see that won’t be enough for everyone and why people want to leave.

      I just wish people would look at the content steam and PSN+ members get compared to xbox. steam has amazing sales sometimes and PSN+ gets free games and great sales sometimes as well, steam is free and PSN+ is cheaper than a gold membership.

        Steam doesn’t intrest me in the slightest as I simply cannot stand PC gaming. To this very day, I havn’t even visited the GFWL or the official Steam website. What goes on with PC gaming is irrelevant to many of us here.
        As far as the Pathetic PSN+ service goes.. I’ve already compared that, and PSN+ offers little to no value to someone like me who is a collector who prefers physical media and doesn’t rent his games. LOL, what part of PSN being a lousy service don’t you understand eh? All the cons of using that console isn’t worth it being 100% free to me.

          why do you hate steam? it works well. plug an xbox controller into a pc buy gta complete edition for about 10 euro on sale, and you get the same if not a better experience than playing it on the 360. and its free to play online with a silver xbox profile.

            It’s not so much I hate steam as much as the fact I hate PC gaming. There are alot of reasons. A huge part of this stems from the fact that I didn’t even get my first PC till I was 26 in 2000 and to be honest other than becoming proficient with the internet, email, etc, to this day I still know nothing about specs and never cared to learn. The reason why this younger generation is so much into it is because I honestly feel they are born with a silver spoon in their mouths by having a PC by the age of 3.

            Not bashing on those that enjoy PC gaming but to me, it’s not a viable gaming platform. I prefer accessability, ease of use and I just don’t like the content on PC compared to consoles. It’s a personal preference really and nothing more. To each their own though, I’m just not part of that PC gaming generation is all.

        Not sure about you, but I never pay more that $35-40 for Xbl. PSN+ is decent, but when you stop paying, you no longer have the “free” games. It’s more like a rental service, however, it’s nice to at least DL and play free games.
        I still prefer XBL, and paying for it does not bother me one bit, but I really hope to see XBL do some stuff more like PSN+ / Steam in terms of deals and pricing soon or at least when the next xbox rolls out.

          why would you stop paying for a service that gives you so much? also yea XBL goes on sale but you never take sale prices into account you go with MSRP. the MSRP of PSN+ and xbox gold is $50 and $60 respectively.

          If gold membership gave similar content for free as psn+ then it wouldn’t be bad, but as it stands now, the free service of PSN is on par with xbox’s paid service and the paid service on ps3 is vastly superior to the paid service of xbox.

          That’s true about the rentals, but lately PSN+ has been pretty aggressive with their sales, and those you get to keep. Thing is, I’m always checking for the free games, and then while there I check for the sales. Where I used to buy everything cross platform on the 360, now I’ve started to pick up a few PS3 titles. It was hard for me to get into the ecosystem, but now that I’m there they are giving me reasons to stick around.

          Don’t get me wrong: I have a ton of XBLA titles and will probably get a few more, but definitely alot less than I used to. Should I ever get a PC under my TV as well, then there will be a 3rd option.

          So I suppose what I’m saying to MS is: be more aggressive with some of the old titles that aren’t moving, and do a better job featuring them: these titles will be new to alot of people. Then maybe people will rediscover XBLA and start keeping an eye on the newer stuff.

      Absolutely agree. I used to download everything on XBLA and the Indie channel to try them out, but now I find myself checking out other services like PSN and Steam more and more. I still prefer XBLA, but every sale seems the same, and the content is all getting stale. I’m almost nostalgic about “the good old days” now…

      Worst thing is, there are so many great old arcade games that time seems to have forgotten, and yet they never go on sale. Go Go Break Steady, Shred Nebula, many many others… A sale on some of these titles might help remind people to check out XBLA a bit more, and maybe they’ll find some of the other games they missed.

        I switched form the Xbox to Steam a few years ago and after about 2-3 years of it I found myself abandoning Steam and coming back to the Xbox 360 in December. There’s far more sales on Steam but if you’ve been there a while then you’ll notice that it has a similar problem to XBLA DOTW which is the same games tend to keep going on sale.

        With that said, there’s far more sale son PC but that blessing is also a curse since people tend to spend more, buying far more games than they’ll actually play leaving them with a huge backlog of games that they’ll for the most part not bother playing. It was a nice change of pace coming back to the Xbox as I felt I have to pick my purchases more carefully and it leads to me playing my games a lot more.

        It’s just a shame the DOTW sales are that bad these days that it’s not worth looking at most of the time. There’s arguments for both I suppose but XBLA deals are pretty lackluster as of late.

      Ive been waiting for original L4D DLC discounts for years now ever since Ive became a Gold Member again, and they never did it, so I caved and bought The Sacrifice last month and Crash Course last August. Its obvious that Microsoft doesnt care for the first Left 4 Dead game, its all about L4D2.
      By the way, dont get the Sacrifice unless you have friends to play it with, its ridiculously hard on Normal at the finale.

      When a “deal” equals the price it should have been in the first place, then something isn’t right. There are much too many DLC and XBLA games that are over priced. Not all, but more are than not. This must be fixed for the 720.

    I bought Zombie Driver HD because I already had all of the other games on sale. Also picked up Tempest for $3. Not a great sale this week but the sales on PSN this week aren’t much better. I’ll be getting Critter Crunch just to buy something but there is nothing else there appealing to me. Kind of a meh week all around.

    I’m disappointed in these sales this week…more of the same zombie-type content that we’ve seen before. Guess I’ll be saving my MS points…again.

    I sure would like to know how the marketing team decides what content to put on sale each week. @XboxSupport keeps telling us to post to the Suggestion forums, but I don’t know how much of our suggestions are actually read…much less acted on. Seems to me they would rather put out repeated sales and stuff that nobody is interested in. {sigh}

    I’ll be honest, I read the first line of your comment, then the first line of point 4…i scrolled through the rest without reading it. but I approve based on what i did read because that’s all that really needed to be said. if the rumors surrounding the next gen Xbox are true, MS has seriously misunderstood its customer base and may get a very rude awakening.

      Here the tl;dr version:
      1. It can’t be that hard to come up with good sales, Steam does it all the time.
      2. Games and DLC (from the small amount of research I did) sell better when they are permanently discounted (i.e. number of sales will basically triple if prices are cut in half).
      3. Games on demand should not be so expensive, the best way to compete with used games is to make the digital version cheaper than the used copy.
      4. $60 a year should be to pay for free games and good deals, not apps I can get for free on other consoles.

          Yeah, I don’t really care as much about 1 if they can get 2 and 3 right, but since they don’t know how to do 2 and 3 correctly, I have to include 1. (Having 1 is always going to be a nice bonus).

          Also, not sure if any of the deals team actually read this thread, but I am looking into picking up Yar’s Revenge and D&D: Daggerdale since they were among a list a good games that were permanently discounted, so props for that. Also, for those who have access to the sales and specials app, there are some good deals there, although the games have been discounted before (I got Limbo and Spelunky when they went on sale, Spelunky was on sale really recently).
