Official Statement on what was said yesterday

I wanted to give you the official Microsoft Statement regarding some comments you may have seen yesterday::

"We apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers.  We are very sorry if this offended anyone, however we have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter."

As frequent readers of my blog know, the moment we have news about our products I will be sharing all the details I can.

A week ago, someone was concerned about the future compatibility with XBLA games so he could still play them in the future in the new XBOX. If it will require you to always be connected to the internet as we know it today, what will happen when change to another communications system. It’s happened in the past, you cannot use an analog TV in the US, old cell phone standard-compliant mobiles can´t be use today to call someone. In the case of Video games, I can’t connect my Dreamcast because ther are no servers and no dial-up connections and I can’t get in XBOX Live on my original XBOX games because XBL360 is incompatible and the original is offline, but at least, I can’t still play all of my games of both consoles offline and with my 360, I will still be able to play my games offline when XBL360 is gone. Not only that, if my old consoles still work, my children will be able to play them all but they won’t be able to play the next XBOX even if they can find an untouched one.

What was said is said. The genie is out of the bottle, and until Microsoft speaks up to deny it,

getting ps4 for the games. You guys can keep ur kinect.

  • jlh

I have to agree with this statement. Right now Sony has all of the momentum because they have announced their next gen system. They can actually talk about their hardware, the games coming out for it, their online infrastructure and most importantly with the specs out there in the public space they have eliminated most of the big rumors and negative publicity that MS is receiving right now.

The long wait to announce by MS is what has fuelled all of the negativity popping up about the console. Every rumor that comes up they have to ignore because they can’t talk about it whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing it has to go unanswered because they still haven’t officially announced the system. So in the absence of facts gamers are doing what we do best: speculating, exagerating and raging out of control. MS need to announce the console this month before this negativity sweeps away all of the good favor they have gained throughout the lifespan of the 360.

  • O Mosqueda

I want every device to be “always usable”.

  • Sjpeckey

Bottom line, if rumors turn out to be true:

    1. Used 360’s will be at a premium as well as the used games.

    2. Microsofts will loose the console war from day one. Not even a subsidy will convince adults (the people that have the disposable income) to buy one.

    3. Sony will see more $ due to the mass exodus of xbox fans.

I can only hope this was some type of “testing the water” before final decisions are made.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

best thing sony could do is make a controller in the shape of the 360 controller, if they don’t a 3rd party i gonna be rich if they can do it.

    • http://twitter.com/boe2BE Boe2

Every single rumor was also a ps4 rumor at some point. Now that the Sony gave that preview, the next xbox is being singled out.
What sucks about this is that when MS does reveal their next console, the haters will never admit they were wrong. They will simply believe that microsoft changed their plans because some frothing idiots flamed every forum they could find.

      • Russell Gorall

The next Xbox has this as a foundation, they have proved that with silence.

Why would you trust anything they are saying? The fanboys will love MS for all the moves they make that have nothing to do with gaming.

    Xbox 720 wish list
    01) Backwards compatibility
In 2005, before taking the big leap from the PlayStation2 and Xbox generation to the so called “Next Generation” of consoles I realized one very important thing: this time around I would not have enough cash to afford both systems. That meant I would have to choose thoughtfully in which direction my future as a gamer would wind up, to the Microsoft side with Xbox 360 or to the Sony side with PlayStation 3. I started gathering the largest amount possible of information on both systems, on all of their key features, strengths, and weaknesses. Initially, I guess you could say I was biased with a strong die-hard fan feeling towards PlayStation 3 because 90% of my fondest game related memories actually come from PS1 or PS2 titles. From the day I came home with a frozen smile on my face and a PS2 in my hands, one of the key features I loved the most about the Sony system was that it came packed with the PS1 chipset inside its hardware. It not only could read PS2 games, and movie DVDs (which in the long run turned out to be a success), it also ran all PS1 games even adding some neat improvements too, like the option to turn on smooth textures or to double the disc speed for faster loading times. So, pondering on which next generation platform to choose from, I had high hopes for PS3. Sadly, in what felt to me almost like a cruel joke, the backwards compatibility feature which was initially announced for PS3 (making it compatible with PS2 games) was removed from the European version of the console unit (but not from the U.S.A. version). The European PS3 still supported PS1 games, but in order to cut down manufacturing costs the “Emotion Engine” PS2 chipset was completely removed from the console. On top of that, when it was finally released, PS3 had turned its back on another important aspect from the past: the rumble feedback function in its controller. The new controller would eventually have a full fledged rumble feature implemented once again after some years and rightfully obtain the name DualShock3, but on release day the controller felt light as a toy, it had no rumble feedback, and it was called Six Axis because it could read positioning and movement in all six axis directions (a pointless feature ignored by 99% of developers).
On the other side of the fence, Microsoft and their console called Xbox 360 oozed coolness from every corner. Through a free update on Xbox Live, Xbox 360 became backwards compatible with a long and growing list of Xbox1 games, displayed through HDTV output. Just like Sony, Microsoft was facing lawsuit from the company detaining the rights to the patent for the rumble feature used in both PS2 and Xbox1 controllers. However, unlike Sony, Microsoft opted to settle outside the court with the company and eventually even bought a percentage of the company’s stock share. Xbox 360 was finally released and from day one it came with a rumble controller which had a sturdy, smooth ergonomic feel to it. The unit itself had a slick, well thought design, which made it look good in vertical position (as well as horizontally). So the market was changing, as usual, because some key players were doing things right, and others were doing everything wrong. Another factor which was literally killing the Playstation3 launch was its price tag. PS3, was very, very expensive. Ken Kutaragi (the mind behind PS1 and PS2 and PS3) in his energetic ambition designed PS3 with a Blueray player as main disc drive which was unbearably heavy on manufacturing costs. Also, nobody in the world at that time even knew what a Bluray disc was, nor what it was for. On the other hand, Microsoft decided that the well established DVD format still had a lot to offer, and since it was cheap to manufacture it was perfectly suited for being the format of choice on Xbox 360. But they did not want to leave the Xbox community without their High Definition format so they partnered with Toshiba and released the HD DVD add-on player for Xbox 360. The format tanked after 18 months and both Toshiba and Microsoft completely pulled the plug off the HD DVD project. A few months later Microsoft started their High Definition Video On Demand service on Xbox Live offering movie rental in HD, in streaming or download including an option for downloading in the background, while playing a game, or after turning off the unit, while the console is asleep.
It had become perfectly clear to me that Xbox 360 was going to be the console of choice for years to come. Somehow Sony, the company that changed the business from being considered a children’s pastime to being the modern young adult’s lifestyle was now walking a different path, as if it had been struck by amnesia, struggling with no memory or awareness of what were in the first place those smart choices that contributed to attain the solid respect and success of the past. The company that introduced backwards compatibility betrayed loyal consumers and its own philosophy with the release of the European PS3 and after announcing PS4 is stabbing gamers in the back confirming that ther will be no hardware backwards compatibility at all on PS4.
So, because on the next Xbox I do want to be able to play my xbox1 games, my Xbox 360 games, my Xbox Live Indie games, my Xbox Live Arcade games, and my Xbox Live On Demand games, I wish for Microsoft to keep doing things right, I wish for them to be cautious not to make the same mistakes Sony has made, and to remain faithful to us gamers by supporting full hardware backwards compatibility on Xbox 720 (or whatever it will be called).

    • http://twitter.com/boe2BE Boe2

TLDR; “backwards compatibility is a very compelling feature”

I think both Sony and Microsoft would LOVE to offer BC on their next console, as it is a very strong selling point. Thing is, it has to be technically possible. PS3 has the cell, the 360 uses a powerpc. Have you ever used a powerpc emulator? It’s gruesome. (According to the pearpc documentation, it’s about 500 times slower than the real thing).

Now, We can still hope MS finds a solution for this problem though, having your entire xbla library available on day 1 would be a commercial wet dream after all :)

    • Russell Gorall

Wow. You wrote so much so wrong. How long did that take you?

  • lahcoe

Well done, M$. You had an opportunity put an end to this damaging rumor once and for all, and you blew it! *slow handclap*

The PS4 is NOT crippled by an always-on requirement, so until you issue a categorical denial, this rumor will keep hurting your next console’s image and make Sony’s offering more appealing.

I have to say, I’ve never owned a Sony console and made the upgrade to 360 from the original Xbox. However, the PS4 (and Sony as a company) is looking increasingly attractive, especially when one considers the PS3’s free online, exclusive titles, superior offers and discounts, and (this is a big one) LACK OF ADVERTISING! Seriously, the dash is a mess with all your annoying ads. I bought an Xbox, not a Gizmondo!

Anyway, my advice to you is this: offer backwards compatibility and confirm it before the PS4 releases this year. That’s the one chance you have of making Xbox gamers wait for your next console, instead of just buying Sony’s.

    • http://twitter.com/HGamer Hardcore_gamer

Nothing is crippled you troll now please do us all a favor and say bye bye

        h0m0 moron.

  • Test_Subject Theta

We have a 50 year old man as an ambassador. Of course Microsoft isn’t worried about how it presents itself.

  • TBC

Ignoring the always on controversy, how about the giant slam against cities that aren’t large metropolitan areas. “Why would I want to live there?” Maybe Microsoft should think about people whose locales have fewer than a million inhabitants.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bush-O-Connor/555604190 Bush O Connor

i had to google to find what all the fuss was about, when i read that tweet. “Why would i live there?” and thought what a bell end.

maybe he’ll be the new head of EA :)

  • Socal71

I miss the old days when people actually kept their personal opinions to themselves. Like his matters anyway. Regardless, in a few weeks we will learn all there is to know about the next xBox and until then, rumors are just rumors. No company no matter who it is will comment on rumors until they are ready for a press release, that is just how it’s done in any industry.

    • H0RIZ0N

It’s bad to keep personal opinion to yourself.

  • PierreJD

Mandatory Kinect, mandatory online connection and no used or rented games playable on the system. If these RUMOURS are true, Sony can start lounging and lighting up the cigars because they have will have been gifted a huge advantage.

    • Trent

wow, you know a lot of information about the next xbox. do you work for Microsoft?

      • PierreJD

Oh no, I forgot to say these things are rumours in big capital letters. Hang on, no wait…

        • Trent

if you know they are rumors why spread them. duh

          • PierreJD

You’re right, let’s not talk about any rumours or speculation for next generation systems! The rumours are coming from sources with pretty good track records of being reliable. Edge online was where the 8GB in PS4 was revealed before the official reveal took place. It’s also one of the places where those next Xbox rumours came from.

Not all rumours come from Kotaku, thankfully. Not all rumours turn out to be untrue either. The Durango doesn’t officially exist except we know it does because of rumours from devs and the media. Perhaps I shouldn’t spread that either. Actually, forget I said Durango, it’s for the best.

The problem is that their “Creative Director” displays an utter lack of concern for what their target consumer base wants. Someone like that has no business being their creative director and should immediately be fired unless Microsoft wants to lose all our purchases and support. I don’t care that the console may not actually require an always-on connection. His arrogance and sense of superiority mark him as unfit for his position. If they do not make an announcement that he has been dismissed or at least demoted I will do all that I can to make sure every gamer I know buys a PS4, and I have always been an Xbox gamer until this point.

This story is everywhere,it is obvious that guy does not know how to use his internet.

    • http://www.allthatgamingstuff.com/ JasonGW

The story being “everywhere” doesn’t mean everyone will see it, nor remember it long term. In January 2012, president Obama, with a tiny minority of democrats and Republicans in Congress, passed legislation authorizing the us government to kill Americans without trial or even charges if they met certain criteria. That was a fact, easily verifiable, and this is, so far, just a rumor. How many people even realize what changed in their rights–a genuinely IMPORTANT issue? Not many. No, the only way this will become common knowledge is if it’s true and is highly publicized by Microsoft and/or its competitors (and if it is, it should be, because it’ll be a cudgel for Sony and Nintendo)

      • http://twitter.com/roji556 Roji556

Actually that legislation was a rumor that was easily dismissed by facts.

What is it with you crazy anti-government people?

Anyways, Adam Orth is pretty pro at giving Sony business. Maybe Sony should give him a salary.

  • DemonRoach

    Morons.

  • Julian

“his personal views do not reflect the customer-centric approach” … hmmm, but maybe the “customer-centric approach (not) we take to our products” reflects his personal views. Duh … in spite of “corporate personhood”, the actions of the corporation do in fact reflect the attitudes and views of the management, since that is what shapes the corporate actions.

  • doktorkraesch

I understand that the “always-on DRM” idea is not an official Microsoft
position yet, but rest assured that I will not spend my hard-earned cash
on a product crippled by such a DRM mechanism. Even if Microsoft’s
servers work all of the time, and I assume they do, my ISP’s and/or my
own Network equipment is much less robust. I would hate to have a single player game interrupted because of network issues.
This is the exact same reason I won’t buy EA’s current Sim City. Stop
this madness before it’s too late! Us consumers do not want this.

    • http://twitter.com/Cueil Daniel Lawson

There isn’t a single console on the market that doesn’t cripple itself with DRM… you people are seriously ignorant

      • doktorkraesch

I have no problem with DRM. It’s the always online DRM that’s troublesome and should not be implemented. And that’s not commonplace at all. No console has something like that in use right now.

      • Russell Gorall

Being a economics-minded consumer is ignorant?

No console has always on or bust. Save that for Steam.

  • http://twitter.com/admiralcw Chris Westerman

I was offended by the comments and feel this apology is not appropriate. Maybe this employee does not need to be an employee anymore. Then he can deal with it!

As for always online. My kids have profiles and play games but do not have live accounts. This will definitley change my view of buying a new console. I am not going to put down that much money for something that limits me by having to be online. i don’t even use used games and hope this rumor is not true.

  • http://www.facebook.com/UrzuSix Paul Rolland

Just shows how out of touch and egotistic people over there have become, I used to love my 360 back when it was exciting with new IP’s and ideas, also love the fact they tried getting different genes on the console, like the early jrpg’s but now all it is is the same fps series. Sony really have made the PS product so much better in terms of value and innovation.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nickolas-Hemp/100001395192658 Nickolas Hemp

All of what was said on Twitter the other day must be true as far as I can tell. This would of been a great time to just kill/discredit this rumor once and for all if their not true. I mean if MS next gen system really does NOT require always on internet why the hell wouldn’t M$ just come out and say so now when everyone is watching? I for one will not buy the M$ nexgen system if these rumors are true!

  • http://twitter.com/AlberichMX Memo B.

Well, hope you can sell the next thing in my country and the rest of LatinAmerica. Because your employee is making us to think in Sony again :P

  • Russell Gorall

While MS may change their gameplan… their gameplan WAS to have the always on for a while now.

If they decide to follow Sony’s example even more at this point, it isn’t going to help their fractured relationship with developers and the consumers that made them profits early in the 360 life cycle. And, they are just again trying to follow Sony.

They have the mindset of Sony circa 2005-2006. Not good.

  • Russell Gorall

As someone who spends thousands on games and buys every system in a generation, Microsoft really better step up their game if they want a penny of my money. A system being always online so you can thward piracy is inconvient for me and frankly not my problem. Cant wait to reserve my PS4.

  • http://capnswing.tumblr.com/ Christopher Swing

Translation: “Well, we were planning on always-on, and kind of still are, we’ll just see how this rage plays out over time first.”

If they weren’t planning always-on, it would be beyond stupid for them not to just say so and stop all the negative talk instantly, even if maybe it gave Sony ideas. So yeah, this statement is practically an admission.

  • Nick Peck

It doesn’t bother me one bit as I understand his frustration. I also agree, it is NO big deal at all. What devices does anyone here use that is NOT always connected? Tablets, cell phones, laptops, ipods ect….. they are always on (and don’t really shut down but go into standby mode). If you aren’t used to it, find another hobby.
I also don’t care what sony says, the ps4 will run the same as the next xbox with the “always on” moniker. The ball is in the dev’s court this time around and they are getting what they want which is fine by me. How many here game on pcs? How long has it been since you could sell / trade in your games? Yah, that’s what I thought.
Steam? yep, keeps a constant check on your software to authenticate. MS will do the same thing as steam so if you think every game wont work if your net goes down.. well, well I don’t know what to say lol.

    • http://www.facebook.com/skater.leif Leif Johnson

Don’t compare PC to consoles, It’s one of the perks of having a console to be able to trade/sell in your games.

pc gamers that boast about being superior make me laugh. i have a high end alienware laptop and it is just to play exclusives and play on the road. i have a love for consoles that started with my nintendo. those who brag about pc just don’t understand the love of video games.

lol my laptop is not always connected and neither is my tablet. you don’t know what you are talking about. the rest is just blah blah.

      • Nick Peck

Really, so how often do you turn your devices on and off? How much do you really do on a tablet that isn’t involved with the internet? Tablets are worthless without the internet.
I haven’t turned my cell phone off in like 2 years as I have no need to. blah blah yourself, you are more always on that you care to know obviously. Also, do you really turn your laptop off every nite, or just let it go into standby? I can’t remember the last time I shut mine off :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/ricardo.gebhardt.3 Ricardo Gebhardt

  • http://www.facebook.com/skater.leif Leif Johnson

Microsoft needs to really take into account the service members who buy the console, but do not have the convenience of having an internet connection due to being overseas, on a boat, deployed, etc. I pre ordered my 360 while I was on a Navy ship, no way I had internet access…this would be such a disappointment and horrible call for us loyal/military gamers.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=829045373 Richard Singleton

Let me introduce the Xbox720 Services Edition, only $199 more than the standard edition but DRM free…not too unlikely given MS history eh?

  • http://www.facebook.com/skater.leif Leif Johnson

Seriously make me president of xbox, all your problems would be solved in 10 minutes. No, online access would not be required. Yes, it would be backwards compatible. Finally, xbox live would be free! ::does Nixon pose::

Yes, the next xbox isn’t announced yet, i know that, but all this rumors, thats last face it, now a days rumors have been almost 90% true, they are just slapping microsoft face. But the real problem is not the rumors, i had the original xbox, then the xbox 360 because of those amazing exclusives, remember mass effect (when it was exclusive), lost odyssey (lost Mistwalker to Nintendo hein?) and the clean interface and the amazing and simply feature of just join a party chat? Now only have the join party chat, the interface is a mess, it takes forever to load the console, the exclusives? really? the route microsoft is taking already made me inclined to switch to Sony even without this rumors, i paid for a gold membership more than the US costumers and because i’m from europe and not UK, I don’t have jack of the features (oh sorry, I have a tons of useless apps), yes, I pay only to play online and party chat… facts that the new PS4 have fixed and probably free. The route Microsoft is taking is “we only care for our US costumers, screw the rest”, “hey, you paid to use online features, here, we give you adds, and more adds, enjoy :D” the only thing right now xbox as it his favor is the fantastic controller.

Before that dou—-ck make that statement i was 70% inclined to switch to PS4, now i’m 90% (i really doubt the next xbox will blew my mind, but maybe i’m 10% wrong), it was really offensive, I don’t live in a big city, sometimes (more than I would like to) my internet is down for 3 days, i wont buy a console that, if my internet is down I have a really expensive plastic paper weight. I know none of the microsoft responsible is gonna read this, and i never comment on this things, but, that was really offensive and it make me feels what the brand really thinks about its costumers, because lets face it, it’s not what the PR say to public that express the costumer point of view of a company, a company its made of his employes.

  • http://twitter.com/JTTHEGAME Jon Taylor

I am hopping the always on thing is not true.about the next xbox. i mean it goes without saying that if for any reason you are with out internet or your internet is playing up you want to be able to play your games console still. keep things how they are with the 360 ms. the internet is a big part of 360 but if anything goes wrong with the net you can still play your 360 no problem i would expect the same from the next xbox.

Even mandatory Kinect is going to put people off and turn them to Sony. You go to play a core game that does not use cr*p like Kinect, you have accidently unplugged Kinect and you then get a message pop up “please connect Kinect” LOL what a joke. MS are idiots.

Major we don’t want an only online console, me and my boddies are ready to go PS4 if you follow this road …….. Same if the NextBox is underpowered compared to PS4 ! Time to go back to hardcore gamer or the wake up will be difficult for teamxbox

I’ve a long time xbox fan and have been so since 2004.

This sort of thing is very, very insulting and does make me consider switching to PS4 or more likely the PC format – we gamers don’t want always on systems. A lot of people may not hear of this row, but they will hear about the always on requirement when they buy a new Xbox.

Please, reconsider this. It will be the death of Xbox – no other under the TV media service machine requires that it should always be online for a reason.

I was a 10 year live subscriber. I was offered a deal for 3 years of discounted live. My subscription was renewed at full price and when I called to work it out they basically called me a liar. I cancelled my live account. I filled out every survey they sent and basically said that they lost the loyal business of a 10 year customer over approximately 12 dollars. I was never contacted at all so I built myself a mid-range gaming PC. It was the best thing that I could have done. Higher quality games for much much cheaper and Steam features are pretty dang good.
I guess my point is that the people pulling the strings in the company have no relationship with the actual customers. Good luck getting through their protective layer of outsourced support. And good luck getting anybody there to give a damn. M$ is getting what they deserve and have been building up to for the last 5 years or so.

sorry nothing opinionated there, those are 10 of the big issues MS needs to address I’m sure you are one of the kids that think COD is the only game that matters with the occasional halo but sorry sony has beaten xbox at every turn the last 4 years.

Not Every turn in the last 4 years, to be honest my experiences with Xbox was amazing (in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) then it went down hill as I explained in previous comment, but yeah he probably is hoped in *The bandwagon* as they say just cos modern warfare 2 came out, and Cod (and gaming for that matter) has a spiral upsurge, but any true gamer would know around about the time i mentioned, its spiraling down, see hand me any game and ill play it to the end, not games these days most bore me.

I think Microsoft is going to be in for a rude awakening if the Always-Online rumors turn out to be true.

I just wanna say the following on the subject of always online connection knowing that it will have no impact on the final decision made regarding this topic on Microsoft’s part.

The internet connection at my home is extremely tenuous, often cutting in and out, sometimes going offline for sustained periods of time. It is the reality of where I live and unfortunately it will be some time before my ISP is able to provide a more stable connection at my home.

It is with this in mind that owning any device that requires a constant internet connection is unrealistic. I am simply not able to access the internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, meaning that any device that needs internet to function on any level would simply become nothing more then an over priced paper weight. I have been an Xbox customer for over a decade, I still own my original Xbox and am a regular user of my 360. I purchase games, both in store and off XBLA. But if the next generation Xbox requires a constant connection I will unfortunately be unable to continue giving my custom to Microsoft.

I hope that Microsoft takes situations like this into account when making this decision I would love to continue purchasing Xbox products, but If I am unable to use them then I have little choice.

What next eh you will need to be a Gold Subscription to play games.

Sucks because I truly enjoyed playing my xbox 360 far more than my PS3. Not sure how adjusting to the PS4 next gen will turn out, but I could care less about the next gen xbox now..
