Minecraft finally dethroned by….Terraria, now THAT is comedy :)
(not that it’s a bad thing, mix Minecraft with proper RPG elements and you get terraria)

        Can’t anyone ban this idiot?

        • BigBernard

          Why?

  • http://twitter.com/HotDanceTrax Alex

Minecraft still #2 on the list, Terraria no where to be found

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

price didn’t help it, it was $2 on steam the release date on xbox for $15 and it isn’t like you need a high end computer for it. does have number 1 in sales for arcade games.

      • jlh

Terraria sold almost 128,000 in seven days which is HUGE for XBLA. The price didn’t hurt it at all and being on sale on Steam didn’t hurt it either. People are buying the game in droves because it’s like a more developed Minecraft but we’ll have to wait to see if it has the same staying power as Minecraft. Unfortunately it was the game released in March that did big numbers. I think April will be better though because of the Punchcard promotion.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

to say the price didn’t hurt it is ridiculous I’d like to see the steam numbers compared to the xbox and PS3 numbers. iirc minecraft sold over a million day 1 on xbox btw.

          • jlh

If people felt there was a problem with the price it wouldn’t have done 128,000 in a week. That is by far bigger than any recent XBLA game outside of Minecraft which is just a monster. And if Steam sales were hurting it then it would also not have done 128,000 in a week.

Steam/PC has very little impact on what sells on XBLA. The overlap maybe great on internet message boards but not in real life.

And for the sake of comparison the next highest debut game on XBLA was Giana Sisters which did a grand total of 2,500. So please don’t try to downplay how great Terraria’s numbers are for this month. We’ll all have to see what happens going forward but for this month it knocked it out of the park.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

actually when a lot of people saw how much cheaper it was on steam they didn’t get it on xbox or ps3 it’s just how it is, you can deny it all you want but it’s a fact. terraria is a very popular game so only selling 128k shows it.

          • jlh

That’s not true, just because you personally believe something does not make it a fact. You need to stop assuming that what is said on internet message boards = real life. It’s been shown time and again that the “lots of people” on gaming message boards are really just a very vocal minority of gamers.

Think about the circumstances of Terraria’s release on consoles. The game has been available for almost two years on the pc and has been featured in Steam sales in the past. It sold over 2 million copies on the pc before it was ever ported to a console and even with those numbers and even with the number of sales and bundles that it has been a part of on the pc it still sold 128,000 copies on XBLA in a week.

Do you realize that in all of last year that the number of new titles that sold more than 128,000 copies the entire year was less than 20? When you say that 128k in a week on XBLA is a bad number you show just how ignorant you are about what is actually happening in the game industry. The numbers for Terraria are fantastic and hopefully it will continue to sell well after it’s debut week.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

it sold 2million on PC, sorta like minecraft did, but when minecraft game to xbox it sold what, a million copies week 1? something like that im not looking up the numbers again.

          • jlh

You’re wrong again. Minecraft has sold over 10 million copies on the PC plus another 5 million on mobile. It is a cultural phenomenon which is played by everyone from little kids to grandmas so to compare Terraria a game which most folks would call a Minecraft clone to the original in game sales is yet again more ridiculousness on your part.

Minecraft is a sales monster on every platform and a console exclusive to boot, it sold 1.1 million in its first week so in your mind every other game that comes to XBLA and doesn’t do those numbers has performed poorly? Terraria is a great game but it is nowhere near as well known nor as highly anticipated as Minecraft and a 128,000 is outstanding for the first week.

Also just so you know two years ago when Terraria was released “exclusively” on the PC it sold 200,000 in it’s first week at the same price point and was considered a great success. So two years later (!)it shows up on multiple consoles and does similar numbers but you think it’s a disappointment. It’s very interesting to me that the man who compiles the XBLA sales stats praises Terraria’s numbers and actual XBLA developer praise Terraria’s numbers but a guy whose only claim to fame is hanging out on Major’s blog says those numbers aren’t good.

          • Boss Saucier

Very good points, jlh! Somebody needs to get Curtis some cream for that burn. That troll got told.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

not burned at all he is delusional if he thinks terraria wouldn’t have sold a lot more if it was cheaper on consoles or at least the same price everywhere, yea it sold 200k on pc when it launched, then it sold more, and more, and more through word of mouth, lots of people wanted terraria and been waiting for the port to consoles, but then steam comes in on launch day and says “lol lets sell at $2 instead of $15″ who in their right mind would buy that. sales should have been above 300k easy on both platforms, but please. continue to tell me how someone would say “oh the product is more expensive here but the same thing? better buy the more expensive one”

          • jlh

Who are”lots of people”? Who are the analysts who said that Terraria would sale 300,000 copies in the first week on BOTH XBLA and PSN? Post the links where anyone with any amount of credibility said that Terraria would move 600k copies on consoles in the first week.

Also I need to correct a mistake I made in my last post. Terraria launched on pc in 2011 at $10 not $15 which is $5.00 cheaper than the console versions and yet the console versions of a 2 year old port did similar first week numbers to the pc. Not to mention that all of those “lots of people” had 6 times to buy Terraria for $2.50 in various Steam sales from the time it launched in 2011 until the time it launched on XBLA/PSN. If they were so swayed by a $2.50 price tag on Steam to not buy it on XBLA they could have done that at any of the other six Steam sales where Terraria’s price was dropped. But of course that didn’t happen because these “lots of people” you keep talking about don’t exist; these are just the imaginary people that you bring up in every post where you spew negativity about every aspect of the Xbox to try to bolster your bogus arguments.

          • Z4M0

…please someone give that guy (curt) a free copy already, cause looks like what he/she’s asking for. I wish I made that “poor” numbers out of something I started 2 years ago… you (jlh) should stop replying, as the conversation came to a dead end alley.

Even I with such monstrous backlog will be most likely getting terraria next week… people also forgets when saying the game came out 2 years ago that: A- This version has (redone) a propper tutorial (one of the major issues) B- It has three times the bosses the OG had.

Also I think console implementation of its controls has been done nicely, and finding games/people to play with will be far easyer on console. If those aren’t enough bonusus to pay for, I dunno what would be.

            BTW, good points jlh

        • Z4M0

Well, I know several people buying it instead of waiting for its sale cause the get back 800 msp rewards promo… I’m also wondering how will it do in the long term.

          • jlh

It should do really well in April because just like you said the rewards promo will get more people to buy. But this is such a huge month for XBLA I hope it doesn’t get lost with all the other big games releasing this month. I’m sure Battle Block will do great, Motocross Madness should do well this week and next week is going to be crazy with both Sacred Citadel and God Mode launching on the 17th & 19th respectively.

    • http://twitter.com/ChicoEdge Chico Edge

Terraria was the #1 Arcade game last week.

  • Russell Gorall

    Gears Judgment at number 8?

After all that effing hype and dashboard ads?

And MW3 is beating Halo 4?

    And Always Online?

Must be weird to have Steve Ballmer as CEO, huh?

    #dealwithit

    • slasaru

Halo is not a new game anymore
But for Gears it is indicative, I do not want to pay for MP only game the full price, and many gamers feel the same

      • melo7

And mw3 is a new game?

        • slasaru

          No, it is not
          Mw3 is sort of classic
COD lemmings should not be counted as gamers may be

      • Russell Gorall

So, the only reason to get the newest Gears is MP?

Skyrim is nearly beating it. Do you get the point?

This was a title that was hyped by Microsoft to high hell, and it has literally been DOA. Kind of funny?

        • slasaru

I am not saying this is the only reason, i am saying that i personally did not buy it because it is only a MP project. And many other gamers did not buy. And we could have bought and spent some time in MP after enjoying the first class single player campaign which this game does not have

But i completely agree with you about hype, the reason is this is the way americans acustomed to buy games. Let MS spent more money on hype than creating new games. They will see some day this is a dead end and fire a buhcn of creative directors

    • http://twitter.com/MKTheory John Doe

Anybody who was aware during Judgment’s development will know that the game is bare bones compared to Gears of War 3.
The pathetic part is that all of the coding that makes up the game types from Gears 3 is still in there.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

Lol won’t be surprised if gears judgement is off the list entirely next week.

  • http://www.facebook.com/573v35m17h Steve Smith

    lol at Halo 4 lol

  • fantomena

Can’t wait to get the Xbox 720. Gonna just #deailwithit when my connection is down.

  • Agusia

Seriously… who keeps buying Real Steel?
Every week it’s in the list… but this game is so bad! :-/

    • http://profiles.google.com/harrypottersdaddy Harry Potter

I’ve seen it on the list numerous times. Now I’m tempted to download it just to see how bad the game is.

      • http://twitter.com/MKTheory John Doe

or you could be smart and play the trial first.

    • Socal71

      Hugh Jackman?

      • Z4M0

LMAO, you might be right… or the game actually may be worth the money. Dunno.

  • Lee D

Very pleased that Halo 4 has dropped down to fifth and frankly I’m surprised it isn’t even lower. If this isn’t sending a message to 343i that they’re ruining the franchise’s brilliant, classic multiplayer component then nothing will. They need to learn to be humble and undo the mess they are making.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

halo 4 was the first halo game I traded in the week I got it( aside ODST which is still the worst halo game ever made) I can’t believe people still play it. I felt grateful I got $40 in store credit.

      • Russell Gorall

Forty bucks is gracious, even in store credit.

      • Paul B

I wish I did the same as you. Stopped playing after one week, played a total of 24 hours, never played it again. Waited forever on a redeeming patch, but that never came, and now I’m stuck with Halo 4, Lucky to get $5 for it now.

        • http://www.facebook.com/573v35m17h Steve Smith

I traded it in a week ago and got $38 for it, The guy at GameStop couldn’t believe the amount of people trading it back in. I hope 343 learns from their mistakes.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

this info is good, i know a friend who still has it, he keeps saying he wants to get through it on legendary but everyone I know who has it other than him traded it in already XD

    • bioadam

Not pleased. This is a sad day for Halo, an embarrassing day for 343 Industries, and a scary day for Microsoft. Halo is an Xbox exclusive that sells the console. If more players would rather play the console agnostic Call of Duty, how will Halo help Microsoft sell consoles?

      • Russell Gorall

Halo doesn’t sell anything at this point. Halo sells Halo to those who already bought the console. This has been fact since 2008.

Call of Duty is better, as far as multiplayer. They can’t even pay people who own Halo 4 to play it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

halo hasn’t been a powerhouse this gen. halo 3 didn’t live up to halo 1 or 2, halo reach wasn’t loved either. halo 1 remake was just halo reach again, so fail. ODST was meant to be a $20 expansion pack but for some reason they tried to sell it for $40. the old fans of halo have basically given up on the series ever being good again.

        • http://www.facebook.com/573v35m17h Steve Smith

I would gladly pay $100 for Halo 2 Anniversary (as long as they don’t do what they did for the Halo CE Anniversary and butcher it).

    • a fat mess

I just don’t understand why 343 decided to make Halo 4 more like a sequel to Reach, instead of Halo 3. I still enjoy playing Halo 4, but it hasn’t reached its full potential, and with 343, I’m unsure it ever will.

    • talexe

I’m still enjoying Halo. What are the main criticisms?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bush-O-Connor/555604190 Bush O Connor

this list looks rigged to me..

halo 4′s peak population nowadays is around the 40,000 mark.

battlefield 3 has a population of 40,000 right now on a sunday morning and should rise as the day goes along.

halo should have finished with reach.

      • Clare Kong

40k mark for matchmaking only. The population websites that you see do not count for forge, spartan ops or campaign numbers.

    • Boss Saucier

Being in the top 5 most played games is a great accomplishment. You must be very successful if you believe this isn’t. I am sure 343i is very happy with their millions of dollars and are not at all concerned with a few crybabies on the internet.

I think Halo 4 is a fine game and I still prefer it to any CoD game.

      • Gunnrs

*fanboy senses tingling* have you played any CoD games? i assure you, as someone who bought both my xbox’s specifically for halo, black ops 2 is far superior. You should try it. also, halo4 is 343i’s first halo game. they deserve the criticism so their next game (H5) will last us three years like halo 2+3. people still were buying halo 3 dlc in 2010 because of its success. i doubt in 2015 anyone will be playing halo4.

        • Boss Saucier

I have tried all of the CoD games. I just prefer science fiction to pseudo realistic war games. I don’t think war is cool in any way. That is my opinion.

Games are just games. If I get entertainment out of it, I will play it. If I don’t enjoy it, I don’t play it. There are more important issues in the world than whether or not a video game meets your strange expectations. 343i made a successful game and I am sure they will make many more. Get over it.

          • Gunnrs

neither cod or halo represent real war…i thought this was obvious. if you don’t like “real” war just avoid the campaign. i also disagree, with your logic about entertainment/games. we bought our 360s because of the games(halo being xbox’s biggest exclusive). you feel opinions of a product that’s #1 selling point is its unique multiplayer are some sort of entitlements. i don’t troll 343i…they are the future of halo for 10 years. i own every halo game. there are kids who bash a new cod and never even played it, blindly claiming it’s the same game.

          • Boss Saucier

CoD does represent real war. They use realistic weapons, vehicles and situations with human enemies.

Your writing skills are below what I am able to comprehend, therefore I can not debate the rest your statement.

            Happy gaming!

          • Gunnrs

“CoD does represent real war.” This list is about live activity which is mostly based on multiplayer. Black Ops 2 multiplayer is treated as a sport like chess with focus on tactics+score, cod players do not treat it as real war. “They use realistic weapons, vehicles” It has no vehicles in its multiplayer which only strengthens my point that you haven’t played it. “situations with human enemies” so does halo-_-

          • Boss Saucier

This list is about the number of unique users who played the game while connected to Xbox Live. It has nothing to do with specific modes of play (eg. multiplayer).

Black Ops 2 is a video game like any other and not a sport. Obviously “players don’t treat is as real war”, it is just a game, but it is styled as a war simulation game. I have played it, so your point is not a point at all.

In Halo, the enemies are aliens and it is not realistic in any way. All of the human characters are your allies.

            Checkmate.

        • http://twitter.com/MKTheory John Doe

Stopped playing Call of Duty at Black Ops.
I hate the series online due to it’s constant campers.
And Treyarch never learns to fix infinite enemy respawns in campaign, at least Infinity Ward tried once.
You mention Halo 3 and DLCs, which is funny because you practically need them in order to really play online. Standard wise, it offers a very small amount of game types which was not enough for me to stick around after story completion. By the end of it all, I bought a $10 campaign mode game.
I don’t understand your logic how Halo 4 will be dead in two years when Halo Reach is still going strong after three when both games are practically the same, except Halo 4 has custom weapon loadouts and drop ordinance in multiplayer. More to add, a better version of Fire Fight. And for those who care for that sort of thing, graphically superior.

  • Clare Kong

People Can Fly really needs to open their eyes to the failure that is Gears of War: Judgement.

    • https://live.xbox.com/MyXbox/Profile?gamertag=DarkGin87 Lee Rayson (DarkGin87)

      How is it a Failure?

      • Clare Kong

The fact that there were so many ads and hype for Judgement but it debuts at #8. I’m sorry, to me, that’s not a good sign unless they can do something about the MP.

        • slasaru

I think they were making what were told, that’s the story

      • melo7

no one likes it and look where it debuted.

        • https://live.xbox.com/MyXbox/Profile?gamertag=DarkGin87 Lee Rayson (DarkGin87)

WRONG!! I liked it so your no one theory is out the window

      • Russell Gorall

You have seen the Live charts?

It is only slightly above Skyrim, and Gears was outdone by two… and nearly three… COD games.

I mean, this fanboyism can be funny to a point, Lee.

        • slasaru

By the way – what sort of live activity is there in Skyrim – a multiplayer? If it’s just collecting statistics, than cannot be compared

          • RockMSockMNY

“Xbox Live Activity” measures the games being played *while the user is signed in to xbox live* – it isn’t an indicator of multiplayer activity only. Since an xbox live connection is obviously required to play multiplayer, games with multiplayer tend to make up the bulk of the top 20.

  • jsgrill

How is Terraria ahead of Minecraft on the XBLA list but no where to be found on the overall list of top Xbox LIVE titles?

      #dealwithit

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

because minecraft was the number 1bought arcade game since it launched pretty much and terriria came out like a week ago.

      • jsgrill

Well, duh. But this is supposed to be activity based on the week of April 1, not lifetime sales.

If Terraria was the most played XBLA title during that week and Minecraft was #2 and shows up on the overall XBL list…shouldn’t Terraria be on the overall XBL list as well?

I’m not a fanboy either way. I’m just pointing out what looks to be a discrepancy.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

the top section is unique users played, the next section where terraria wins is sales for the week.

lets say minecraft sold 1million copies when it launched , which was like march 2012 and sold 20,000 units every week until now. terraria sells 1million units when it launches which was last week.
even though terraria sold more this week, the lifetime sales, and thus users of minecraft vastly outnumber the terraria users. not to mention there was an update recently for minecraft which has new content so many people might have checked that out.

  • Russell Gorall

Halo 4 Owned By Many… you get the picture.

With Halo, Gears and the last Forza doing what they are doing, I hope Microsoft adds a Sim City and Diablo 3 theme to their next Xbox launch. Along with faulty hardware.

  • http://twitter.com/deathspankd deathspankd

halo 4 is a great single and co-op game as well as gears but I don’t play either online because they both suck. people that think gears was overhyped may be right but this list isn’t accurate by any standards it could very well be higher or lower if everyone playing xbox was taken into account instead of “unique users” this list is very basic to say the least

  • Russell Gorall

Look at Bioshock Infinite, 13th place on the top live list. What a crappy game that must be. Now GoW and Halo 4, THERE are some quality titles, 8th and 4th place.

Wow Halo and Gears….You know you’re a dead horse when you start to copy Call of Duty. On another note it would be nice to have a most played arcade title list :)

…it does have an arcade list

      • Clattus

Referring to activity of arcade not full games purchased.
