Netflix Update Readies “Hemlock Grove”

This week, the Xbox community will notice an app update for Netflix rolling out across all regions where the service is currently offered. This update will include performance improvements and a newly designed “Netflix Originals” landing page, offering viewers a look at the very latest in original programming from Netflix, including the highly anticipated “Hemlock Grove,” slated to launch April 19. “Hemlock Grove” comes from director Eli Roth (“Hostel”) and is a chilling supernatural series based on Brian McGreevy’s novel.

*Xbox LIVE Gold subscription and/or additional subscriptions/fees may be required and sold separately. Kinect functionality available with select Xbox LIVE content and varies by feature and country. For additional details and availability, see Xbox.com

No video party with friends? :(

    • http://twitter.com/cinemaparker Terrence Aybar

      That was always fun.

    • http://twitter.com/sastubblefield Scott Stubblefield

I too miss this. I thought there were plans to bring it back?

    • Avatar Roku

They should add that feature to Youtube, Amazon, and HBO Go too. I would love to watch video content with friends.

  • Alex M

Too bad the Netflix UI is still terrible on the Xbox. Why does an episode start playing as soon as I click on a show? I just want to browse through the episodes without one having to load up and start playing first.

this (and the fact that it is only 720p) is the reason i stopped using netflix on xbox. it would be like midnight, i’d leave it at the netflix menu and go get a drink and suddenly it would be playing a movie or show and it never failed to be loud and wake people up

the ps3 netflix app is everything i want in a netflix app, aside the video party thing they removed years ago.

    • http://twitter.com/Inaba_kun Inaba-kun

The auto play thing is absolutely maddening. Whoever thought that up, needs a good slap.

  • http://twitter.com/Zurgi serjio duarte

where is my update to add back the party option!

    • http://www.facebook.com/sid.meyers.7 Sid Meyers

As if it’s so difficult to startup an Xbox LIVE party and have everyone press play from the exact same location.

  • http://twitter.com/Hauz20 Gabriel House

Any specific info on these “performance improvements?” Thanks!

  • M.Spit

would be nice if they did something about the horrendously slow app. i can boot up my ps3, load netflix, pick an episode, and start watching typically before netflix on the xbox finishes the loading splash pages.

  • http://twitter.com/Alexpletives Alexisms

Still no playlist for UK’ers :-(

  • n11

How about an option to include a password in order to play restricted content? I know many families who have kids and obviously most kids/teens aren’t gonna abide by rules, so how about inputting a password of some sort in order to play 14+/18+ stuff?
Also, how about a feature where if I accidentally hit a button my controller because its sliding into my but, netflix doesn’t go crazy take me back to the menu, maybe a “confirm?” message to prevent this?

    • http://twitter.com/ciprodriguez ciprodriguez

how about a password for everything else too.

    • Rotmm

That “hit a button my controller because its sliding into my but” situation is just so annoying I agree it needs a “confirm?” message to try to prevent it.

However, even then a ‘but sliding button’ may confirm it without us really wanting to, so I think it needs a “are you sure?” message to prevent false confirms. And because it’s all too easy for a ‘controller my sliding’ to potentially erroneously record a positive for the “are you sure?” dialogue box, a further “no, I mean are you really certain about that?” message will go a long way to ensuring a smoother watching experience.
This is the kind of thing we need with all of our apps. Developers must get on the case right now!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1067473531 Jeremy Anderson

Bring back party view! I could’ve sworn that this was supposed to be added back into the SDK so that the app-developers could implement it.

  • http://twitter.com/ImRoadKill Ulrick Thamdrup

I would rather want Netflix to remove the region limitations and let everyone see all the movies and series regardless where they live. The time has come to remove these limitations so maybe Netflix can show the way :)

  • http://twitter.com/ciprodriguez ciprodriguez

Bottom.line guys is that Microsoft doesn’t develop these apps. you have to go to the respective parties to request fixes or addition of features. Example Revision 3 app was developed by Revision 3 and it took them awhile because they didn’t have a developer to code it.

    • InfernoShade

Stop making sense. You’ll mess up everyone’s reason to whine.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Isabell/1036013363 Curtis Isabell

will it finally be in 1080p?

    • GMAN73

Nope only content from Microsofts own service is in 1080p.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Lafitte/609265629 Jason Lafitte

Please tell me it will be quicker after this update, its painfully slow to navigate. And the content menus suck.

  • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

Hey netflix how about you address these issues?

    1. Bring back XBL party watching.
    2. Give us 1080P streaming like my Blu-ray player and my PS3 does.
    3. Get rid of the horrible auto play.. we should be able to preview information without the movie/show starting.
    4. Get rid of that horrible preview pic that enlarges to 16:9 when we hover over a tile.
    5. Start showing us the total number of titles in each section like you used to do back in 10! It sucks not knowing how many titles we have in our queue.

In otherwords, just use the same app that my PS3, BD player and television does. The only advantage the XBL app has over the standard version of the app that every other console and settop box uses is the fact that we can see more titles on the screen at once, that’s it. When you consider the fact that we pay on top of the netflix fee, we should be getting 1080P streaming by default.

    • ElektroDragon

No, AutoPlay is GREAT! Keep it in! I need it to keep my 2 year old entertained! But agree that the PS3 has the best Netflix app.

      • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

Haha! Yeah, I guess I wasn’t thinking about the children! :) My bad!

      • http://twitter.com/chuckiej Chuck Jacobson

I interpreted that as “Don’t make me start playing a show to find out more information about it”.

        • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

That’s exactly what I meant and I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about as well.

    • rkm80

Number 4 in your list is my biggest complaint. So very irritating.

      • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

        Indeed.

  • theConstruct

Disable auto play and match the system settings. Having to take it off of 5.1 EVERY SINGLE TIME is ridiculous. If I had the money to blow on a Roku I would never launch the 360 Netflix app again.

    • ElektroDragon

Wait for the new Intel TV box, should be amazing.

  • KEVIN

what i do not like is i got to log in all the time

    • Trevor Huston

I’ve never had to log in separately to NetFlix (after the initial setup). You need to look at your Live account and maybe network.

  • http://twitter.com/korahn Eric Starr

lol, Eli Roth – he’s the Uwe Boll of the Western World.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/BeeDizz BeeDizz

It says something about it when I’ve watched more Netflix on my Vita than my 360.

Major Nelson….its time to announce the new xbox. There are to many rumors, haters, and speculators that want to see the xbox fail! Alot of people are jumping ship becuase of what they are hearing. Not me tho…i really dont care wat playstation does..im hear to stay!! Xbox forever!

Once i started playing the xbox…the playstation controller just stop dong it for me. Controller to small and dosent feel right!! You gotta have some girl hands to operate it. But anyway, i really think that May 21 is to long of a wait for some people if that date is accurate. a 1 minute teaser is all you need to stay relevant!!!!!! because playstation can release any day now becuase people kno wat they got to offer, and that will digg into you guys sale!!! u get me!!! So tell the guy that responded about his employee on twitter to respond to this message Major Nelson. Peace

    • Nick Peck

People can’t jump ship to something that isn’t out yet. Most of the blowhards that are saying they will goto ps4 are the same people that rip on the CoD games, yet they own, play and buy every game that comes out in the series.

Once all the facts come out people will shut up and stop sounding as stupid as they do now. It’s getting closer so we just have to wait a bit longer. As for Netflix, if that new show is anywhere near good as house of cards I’m game 100%.

  • http://twitter.com/Inaba_kun Inaba-kun

I use Netflix mostly on my PS3 now. The combination of the far superior UI, and the 1080p ‘Super HD’ (7mbit) streaming makes it a much better experience. It’s too bad Microsoft have limited Netflix (and every other streaming service except their own Xbox Video) to only 720p.

unblock the dns trick for netflix that you guys put in with the last update. its not worth having netflix if its not on the american dns servers. its full of rubbish films and tv shows here. bargin bin fillers at best.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=661937737 Chris Church

Can’t we just get an A-Z option. I hate the way that these video apps always put things into categories and then give you a search option. How about just and A-Z list split into TV Series or Movies that I can just go through!

  • http://www.facebook.com/gavin.greenwalt Gavin Greenwalt

Will it remove that awful “Are you a 6 year old and want to watch Barney?” screen?

  • http://twitter.com/kjordan_29 Kurt Jordan

Is anyone else having issues when watching an HD TV show, but it won’t go full screen? It continues to play in 4:3, in HD quality. Weird huh?

  • http://www.facebook.com/macy.slator Macy Slator

Oh man I’m so exci….Oh wait, I don’t have live anymore, so I can’t access netflix. Should be reworded to say “Xbox Live Subscriber Community”.

  • Trevor Huston

Anybody have Subtitles / Captions on for every show? I have to turn them off everytime a show starts. Where is the ‘Disable by default’ setting??

    • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

The default setting is off. You simply hit down on the dpad and scroll over to the audio/subtitles tile and enable/disable it there. It remembers what your last setting was whether you have them on or off by default. I’ve never had this problem.

      • http://twitter.com/legalizeadulthd Richard Thomson

Sorry, but the same thing is happening to me now that I have this update. It isn’t any faster than before, but now I have to turn off subtitles every time I launch the app and every time I watch 5.1 content, I have to turn off 5.1. Why can’t this player remember my settings? Why should I have to keep turning off subtitles and 5.1? This thing gets worse and worse with every release they’ve put out since the “UI overhaul”.

        • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

I just confirmed this again. I just started netflix and it always remembers whether I had the subtitles set off or on. I really don’t know what to tell you but It works correctly for me. Have you tried clearing your cache and redownloading the app?

  • http://twitter.com/legalizeadulthd Richard Thomson

Yes, I see this with the update.
