3D Render of Xbox One

Totally unofficial, but very cool.

May not work on mobile or older browsers

Xbox One By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • http://twitter.com/Mikthomson Michael Thomson

Cool. Sort of works on wp8

  • ElektroDragon

My god, Kinect 2 is HUGE. I’m totally getting this DVR wannabe that still requires a cable company DVR now!

    • Does Not Equal

If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Either way, please stop whining about it.

      • JoeGrahamcracker

        Stop whining about people whining.

        • Does Not Equal

          Mine was a plea.

    • kingcrusher

It’s not so much whining about it, but the constant lame negative comments on EVERY post. Just relax, we’ve said our piece. You can get in your opinion without blasting. I think by now MS realizes that if they don’t fix the issues they will lose out on our money. Let’s just relax now and see what they do, but just be prepared to follow through if they don’t make it right.

But you gotta admit, the render thing is cool being able to look at it from all angles and stuff.

      • ElektroDragon

But I wasn’t even complaining about the used game angle here.

    • Kevin Corcoran

Dont forget that you, and your friends aren’t the only ‘types’ of consumers out there. this system is made for a wide audience.

Don’t bash a console. Its like comparing a Nissan Leaf to a Muscle car, and you constantly complaining that the Leaf doesn’t have enough strength in it. it makes you look like a child with no common sense. Buy a gaming PC

      • ElektroDragon

I already have a gaming PC.

  • kingcrusher

Ok, that is way cool. I like being able to look at it like that and play with it. I really hope they fix the things that will prevent me from buying it (as in, used games, and needing to “ping” home).

Very cool. I like the controller, they didn’t go far from what was already the best controller out there. And the box actually looks good as well.

    Here’s to hoping :-)

    • Dennis Fluttershy

Yes, the Xbox 360 is the best controller every to be released. Comfortable to hold for prolonged time, easy to use (PS3 hurts my thumb when using the sticks, the triggers are stupid, and for Wii/Wii U, the controllers are a joke as hardcore gamers, right?).
The Xbox One’s new 2 buttons are still Back/Start but named View/Menu, because that’s what they are now, and “Back” was misleading. Still buttons for the game, (all this according to rumours). Ruble triggers, is a nice feature too. A smaller dead zone for the sticks, that was my biggest complain about the 360 controller.

      • Alex_Atkin_UK

The only thing wrong with the Wii U controller is its just not ergonomic enough and not having analog triggers. Its perfectly workable however and still more comfortable than the PS3 controller IMO.

But yes, the One controller looks like its the excellent 360 controller with the few issues it had fixed. Moving the guide button away from start/select, moving the battery bay so it doesn’t cramp your fingers and fixing the god awful D-pad. Its just a shame so many other things about One don’t have me sold.

  • Steve

Looks cool and works on my Lumia 920…
Now make me want to buy it again!

  • Dylan

Not a fan of the current direction of the Xbox One, but I gotta admit this is pretty cool. Someone spent a good amount of time rendering it.

    • Morgon Britton

This is very nice. Also the current direction of the One I think is turning. They are allowing Indie games on the one. And major said in his twitter that they are working on clearing all this mess up. If you go to his twitter you can find it.

      • Palindrome 101

Clear this mess up as in how to spin it. What I find as nasty as the X1 hidden ‘features’ is how slippery M$ is in dodging the questions. When asked about sharing a game M$ responds ‘of course, with a minor fee’, that fee being the full purchase price, double talk for absolutely no sharing. They could have made a game usable in only one location at a time, just like your profile can only be used in one location at a time, but that is not what they want. Asked again about sharing games, and M$ answers ‘of course you can buy used games from a retailer’, completely dodging the question. Even the used game bone they pretend to be throwing you is meant to cover the fact that the used game will only work from a M$ controlled retailer. Now I don’t need used games, I can wait the years it takes for a game to become reasonable in price, assuming M$ allows prices to drop in time as they do now. Look at Games on Demand prices for a peek into the future when M$ controls everything. But since I rarely buy a game I have not played, I would be buying very few games, and would never become familiar with a new franchise. Other than the Bioshock demo, every demo I have ever played has convinced me not to buy the game. Sometimes, as with The Darkness 2, the game turns out to be excellent, not the impression I got from the demo. Fortunately there are game play videos on YouTube. But the deal breaker for me is the internet requirement, and M$ is not going to give that up. The X1 is the culmination of what they have been slipping into the 360 for years and their goal since before the original XBox. Everything M$ wants the X1 to be is everything I don’t want it to be, and that is OK. Since I found out that M$ won’t be dropping the 360 the way they dropped the original XBox, I know I will still have a game console for years to come. The X1 is what it is, but hopefully, with enough noise, Sony will not follow M$ and the PS4 will be a game console with features I enjoy instead of features I don’t want that are forced on me. Making some X1 noise is also a public service to protect those uninformed who are dumbfounded when they hear of the hidden ‘features’ M$ is trying to slip by them.

        • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

I am tracking down answers…once I do, I will be posting. That’s all I can say now, but we ARE listening.

          • Alex_Atkin_UK

Good to know. Its just annoying to be told “its the same as before” when in fact if it functions like XBLA games “you have to be signed in for friends to play on their console” then its NOT the same as before.

360 disc: You can lend a game to a friend and still play at home.

One: You can’t play a game at home while lending to a friend because your profile has to be signed in there.

Plus if its like 360 you end up with some games unlocking achievements on your profile even though you weren’t playing, annoying.

          • Palindrome 101

You had a system on the 360 that worked. Games on Demand for people who didn’t want to use a game disc, and a game disc for people who wanted to feel like they owned something. A game disc is forever, unlike Xbox Live, hard drives, the first XBox I put the game disc in, and my access to broadband internet. Pursuing their vision of digital only distribution of games, Microsoft has broken that system with the mandatory game install, making the game disc a problem that needs to be controlled. The solution is not to make the hardware & software functional only with Big Brothers permission. The solution is to fix what you broke. You buy a disc, you use a disc, otherwise use Games on Demand.

Updates to the 360 have always been one step forward and one frustrating step backward. 360 owners would vent their complaints in the beta message boards, but nobody was listening. Since you are listening now, just a few other things. I have used Kinect, and may I say I really like the 360 controller, the one thing I would really miss if I were forced out of the Xbox camp, so let’s hope Kinect use is optional. Don’t hobble the Xbox One to Xbox Live the way you have with the 360 (timestamps, Indie games, Pins not allowed offline). Also allow the user to customize the dashboard, making it look like a game console by hiding everything Microsoft likes (TV, Music, Apps, advertisements, Kinect). I like wallpaper, let me see it, let me supply it. I know Microsoft is going to do what it wants, but just the suggestion that Microsoft is listening, wow, what a rush.

          • Timothy brown

See that`s all we want some straight answers hopefully all will be cleared up at e3 Then i can make an informed decision like a rational human being

  • Morgon Britton

By the looks of it, i will be able to use my X41′s on the One with the little plug in thing on the back.

    • Steve

I just spent $200 on the new Turtle Beach XP400, but they will be useless because the connection for the headsets dongle on the new controller will be different than the current controller.

      • Morgon Britton

Ah yes I didn’t even think about that. Well if i get a One and I go play 360 I still got my headset (:

        • barry3218

i think turtle beach may make an adapter also i think turtle beach and MS have signed a deal aswell so the standard headsets for xbox will be produced by turtle beach which should mean better build quality

          • Morgon Britton

            This would also be good.

  • MrRadiolips

I Wish they had a 3D rendering of just the controller because i will probably end up buying one for my new gaming PC.

    • Morgon Britton

I thought you could only used corded controllers for PC games?

      • MrRadiolips

No you can purchase wireless gaming recievers that work with 360 controllers. So im assuming they will do the same for this one.

        • Morgon Britton

Oh yeah then probably. I never heard of the receiver but I’m interested in one now.

      • boe2

Given the popularity of the current 360 PC controller (it’s guide button makes it awesome in Steam Big Picture mode), I’m pretty sure they’ll provide either a wired controller for pc or a wireless receiver for this new controller.

    • Dennis Fluttershy

You can use the middle mouse button to move and scroll to zoom to get a better view of the controller.
Press the walking man to enter “first person” or “flying mode” and use WASD to fly the camera, and mouse to aim.

      • Kevin Corcoran

        thx

    • Kevin Corcoran

same here. i will be buying the controller for my gaming rig before i even buy the console itself.
      g660ti corei7

      • MrRadiolips

2 Radeon 7950 i5 3570k. Glad to see people who actually game not just buy a console because it says xbox. Not getting Ps4 either this gen.

        • Kevin Corcoran

thats a great CPU. i went with the comparible i7 that has a slight boost in encoding video. ya gaming PC rig is where it’s at. What controller do you use currently?

          • MrRadiolips

Ive got a thrustmaster GPX lightback black. Im very proud of this system thanks!

        • Kevin Corcoran

i see the pic. Always an exciting time getting things put together for the first time. I notice there is one box for the video card there, did you purchase the second one later on? And were you happy with the jump in performance for the price of the card? im contemplating another 660 ti, or just grabbing the gtx780 and dualing those, in 6months time when the price goes down.

          • MrRadiolips

Yeah purchased the 2nd card about a month ago and added another 8gb of ram. FPS got way better on everything and could finally play Crysis 3 on ultra at 60fps. Yeah those new 780′s look and perform amazingly. Im an AMD guy so down the road i might get a couple 7990′s.

      • MrRadiolips

Followed you on twitter from Sourcecustomcomputers. Dont worry not going to try to sell you anything just thought you were a cool dude. Havent updated my website in a while so dont judge. :)

  • avi

    cool render!

  • H0RIZ0N

Cool but I still don’t like the design on the xbox one.

    • lethargicj

You don’t like giant ugly black blocks?

      • Does Not Equal

Yeah, the PS2 was pretty ugly.

        • slasaru

Ps3 super slim is worst consol design ever

          • tr1gger

            Hahaha. 100% agree.

          • http://www.facebook.com/adamdjt Adam Daniel John Thompson

If a console is ugly or beautiful to look at doesn’t really matter. If you spend your time looking at the console, then you are kinda missing the point.

      • JoeGrahamcracker

The design was inspired by Minecraft.

  • BigBernard

Looks horrible no matter what angle.

  • DEUTSCH TEAM

In my opinion, the Xbox One is the most beautiful console of all time. But it should be the width of 42cm (standard rack). Would match perfectly with my equipment from B&O, Philips and Classè. Beautiful design, BEAUTIFUL!!!

    • safdf

      Is that sarcasm?

      • DEUTSCH TEAM

No, its not sarcasm. The visual of XBOX ONE is simply BEAUTIFUL (in my opinion).

  • barry3218

Thanks, whoever done this i havent seen the rear ports before, i like this design its kinda retro looking and gotta say the vent being half of the box is most welcome indeed more air getting pushed out the system = less chance of overheating.

  • Bush O Connor

stupid question time… but is the kinect wireless? it looks to be in every picture

    • barry3218

i think it connects to that port on the left-hand side.

      • Bush O Connor

yeah it looks like it has 2 connections on the same adaptor.

      • BoA Wrath

The port on the left hand side is one of the 3 USB3 connections on the console. No the kinect is not wireless and will connect at the rear on the right of the 2 other USB3 connections 3rd one from the end.

        • barry3218

ah, cool , thanks for that info so is it the obscure looking port on the back , i never had kinect1 so i dont know what the connector looks like.

          • BoA Wrath

I’d put money on it. Not much mind as I wont have much left after buying one of these :)

    • Jaffa Cake King

If it were wireless people would just put it in a cupboard and forget about it.

  • JoeGrahamcracker

My windows 98 can’t handle this, but one question; Will the controller be compatible with the 360? This is seriously looking like the greatest controller of all time.

    • shinji

Will the controller be compatible with Windows?

      • Bush O Connor

it will for an extra $50,

        • Riddick Snipes

          Ur comment is golden!

      • safdf

In Soviet Union, the XBOX controls you.

Sorry, did I say Soviet, i meant American.

      • Volitar Prime

I would like to know this too. Also if it will work with a XB360.

    • Riddick Snipes

      Did u say windows 98?

      • JoeGrahamcracker

I was joking, but wouldn’t that be awesome if that was still the OS I used? I’m actually not far off using XP LOL

  • Ken

24/7 always on Kinect. Even when the console is off. Sorry microshaft, but you are not gonna be spying on me. PS4 is WHAT the gamers want. MORE focus on games. And not MORE focus on junk nobody will ever use.

    • Kevin Corcoran

thats just your opinion. stop trolling. “MORE focus on junk nobody will ever use”. Do you reallly think that microsoft would just make new features that nobody will use? Use your common sense before you start typing.

They;ve done their market research. These new features that you are seeing are BECAUSE there are many people asking for it.

      • Jaffa Cake King

I’ve lost count of how many people I’ve seen asking for Kinect to be forced into their living rooms. Show me this market research you speak of. One thing’s for sure they’ll be doing plenty of market research once they get that Orwellian device into your house.

Are people really asking for mandatory Kinect, used game fees and 24hr server hand shakes? Are these the things that have been missing from gaming all of these years?

I think you’re the one who needs to use common sense instead of just bending over and saying “Yes please Microsoft”.

        • Kevin Corcoran

          then dont buy it.

          • JoeGrahamcracker

Ooh good one. The point is there are a bunch of people who want to buy it, but Microsoft are giving people reasons to not buy the damn thing.

          • Jaffa Cake King

I’m not. Not in its current form anyway.

        • Jaffa Cake King

How can you down vote me saying DRM is a bad thing? You crazy people, you deserve all they throw at you.

      • http://www.facebook.com/adamdjt Adam Daniel John Thompson

Yes, I see many people asking for the ability to pay more money to watch TV on their TV, when they can do it already for no extra cost, and without requiring massive CPU caches to switch to TV half a second quicker than they could before.

MS are trying to predict the way of the future – if they hit it right, they will make more bucketloads, but if they are wrong, then they won’t make anywhere near as much.

      • BigBernard

“stop trolling” – Stop apologizing first.

      • Volitar Prime

For the cost of the new Kinect, the HDMI in, and these other non-gaming features we could have had more RAM, a faster CPU, and a more capable GPU.

  • barry3218

did anyone else go through the console render to see if there was any hardware inside, or was it just me ? hehe

  • Darin

Man, look at all that ads space they could use. Everyone is TV, TV, TV. I want to know about the ads. More then the 360? Bigger ads space? TV guide ads? Ads before installing a game?

    • Volitar Prime

Targed ads generated by the XBOne overlaid on whatever TV show you are watching.

      • Timothy brown

        Don`t joke about that lol

  • b knight

Cool! Now how about a 3D rendering of the policy for it?

    • DerpieDutch

You can have mine, but you have to pay a fee.

      • b knight

I will pay top dollar for the policy!

        • http://www.facebook.com/adamdjt Adam Daniel John Thompson

Even though you will never read it.

          • safdf

What we will never read is your name, I can’t see where it begins and where it ends. You sure you didn’t forget any other of your names?

  • barry3218

you do realise you dont have to watch tv on it, we all know it gonna play games otherwise it wouldnt be branded xbox, it would be cool if you get stuck on a game such as silent hill(damn some of them puzzles are hard) you can bring up a youtube guide to help you through it. and its “xbox on” if you shout power on your gonna be dissapointed

    • disqus_iqKPdhv16l

That’s the point tho, I wont be watching satellite on it because it’s a “useless feature” and that’s right it was “xbox on”, my bad.

      • barry3218

the only thing im worried about xbox one is that multiplayer games like battlefield or cod will incorporate video chat which we all know will end up like chat roulette. as long as i can turn off skype video chat then im getting this console.

        • safdf

User: XBOX On, Game Call of Duty, please.
Kinect: “I’m afraid I can let you do that. You haven’t watched your HBO today.”

          • http://www.facebook.com/adamdjt Adam Daniel John Thompson

“I’m sorry, Kinect detects someone under the age of 15 in the room, the game will not start.”

          • safdf

Safety for the cost of your privacy and liberties, I like that. NOT!

          • ReadTheArticlePlz

Actually this is the first thing that sounds positive to me. If I can play an evening of Halo without some 12 year old raging about how much the rest of his team sucks and all the things he did to our moms last night it would be nice. In reality though, let the parents decide if it’s right for the player not the console.

        • disqus_iqKPdhv16l

yup, wouldn’t want to play games with video’s popping up of people with their thang thang out.

          • barry3218

hahaha brings a whole new meaning to the word obtrusive.
wont just be notifications getting in the way. like i say though if you can turn skype video chat off its all good.

    • http://www.facebook.com/adamdjt Adam Daniel John Thompson

But I have to pay extra to be able to do so. All that cache being wasted on it, as well as paying for a Kinect I don’t want. If I’m stuick, I just go to gamefaq’s on my phone. If I’m playing my Wii U, I go to Miiverse and ask, or check websites or youtube via its browser, then go back to my game. Or, I just sit at my PC which is in the loungeroom, and look things up there, or even just use the laptop.. I have so many options already that I don’t need a console that will be $200 more than it should be just for another option to do things I already can do without buying it.

      • barry3218

what do you mean about pay extra, youtube is free, and why go to your pc when there is a browser on the console, as for the £200 more than it should i highly doubt that. if kinect is mandatory they will charge a small amount for it or it will be included in the price of the bundle in which case it will still be cheap for what you are getting, most uk retailers are guessing £400

    • Jaffa Cake King

Personally I’d rather use my tablet or laptop to find help instead of using up space on my TV screen.

      • barry3218

then thats entirely upto you, you dont have to use this feature.

        • safdf

I only hope there will be more game-related features other than install game.

        • Jaffa Cake King

I know i don’t have to use that feature. That’s why i said I’d rather use my tablet or laptop.

  • jlh

This looks very, very cool. And that controller is seriously a work of art. I need that thing right now especially since the dpad is supposedly fixed. Great job to whoever put this together.

    • Volitar Prime

If the controller works on the XB360 and PC then I will definitely get one even if I never get an XBOne.

    • xXgannicusXx

the left side is grey, not charcoal or a dark grey or black as some think. you can clearly see this during the reveal when they are sitting in a well lit room at one point having a conversation. its pretty ugly if you ask me. the controller is fine, but console design even looks more like a cable box than a gaming console. downvote me, idc, I just think it looks ugly, and if I’m going to have something for years, it’d be nice if it was aesthetically pleasing…why do they think so many of us bought face-plates for the white albatross.

      • Timothy brown

Exactly i mean it`s not as bad as the orginal xbox and face it that thing was fugly but still i thought these consoles were supposed to evolve not devolve

  • safdf

The most beautiful 3D model of a paperweight-to-be plastic box, kudos. I still like rocks though.

  • Rickard Olsson

Very cool and all, but where did the Xbox Live Activity posts go? Been missing for a while now…

    • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

Been busy. I am hoping to get one up next week before I head to E3.

      • barry3218

will E3 be streamed live on xbox live in the UK?

  • http://www.facebook.com/adamdjt Adam Daniel John Thompson

I don’t touch my console to turn it on – I just press the power button on the controller – the same controller I use to actually play games.

  • http://www.facebook.com/adamdjt Adam Daniel John Thompson

Hmm, I wonder what will happen if I plug a Wii U into the HDMI in?

    • Dennis Fluttershy

Not much, more than the Xbox One required to be on to show the Wii U. Still useful to use the Xbox One as a central hub if you don’t have one yet and only have one HDMI on your screen/TV.

      • safdf

Wii U connected to the ONE: sparks will fly.

Then you see some smoke, it’s fried, bon appetit.

    • Shenmue

It will eat it… Like Unicron eating a cybertronian moon.

  • Orlɛanž

    Can you spot any similarities?

    • barry3218

apart form it being rectangle. none TBH.

      • Orlɛanž

I just order my copy of COD: Ghost for Xbone

        • barry3218

some people have too much time on their hands.. pretty impressive though.

        • Jaffa Cake King

Your VHS game won’t fit in your Betamax console mate.

        • barry3218

even though i enjoy cod, i thought of something when i saw that image…. a 6 hour campaign would fit on that tape on long play hehe

    • Kevin Corcoran

      bwahahhahahah thats awesome!! beta max!

    • Rickard Olsson

Which is why the One is such an awesome looking machine!

    • safdf

That’s a fake, you only put the old Sony stickers in a XBO.

    • ElektroDragon

Hey! That’s the VCR I had in the mid 80s!

    • ReadTheArticlePlz

Eh.. I don’t see the concern here. I would rather my console blend in with everything else in my entertainment center. What is on the TV should be the focus, if I never notice the unit that is good. So many of you want this stand out console box that will cry out to be noticed. Why?

This quote below comes straight from Microsoft and is one of the few things they are doing with this console that I agree with:

“The console and Kinect sensor are liquid black so they melt into the background when being used, allowing the content on your TV to dominate the living room.”

A console that pulls my attention away from the TV itself is not something that interests me.

    • Does Not Equal

Let me get this straight: You’re bitching about the SHAPE of the console, right? Not its capabilities, not its specs, not its library, but the simple fact that it doesn’t LOOK like you think it should. Is that correct?

    • Morgon Britton

You do know they WANTED to give it a RETRO look to the system.

    • Volitar Prime

The look of the system is one of the few things that I really do like about it. It looks like it really belongs in an entertainment center/rack and not a toy.

  • ElektroDragon

It can use it with a DVR. The point is that Microsoft had a huge opportunity here to create a TiVO competitor and instead went with a cheap half-hearted approach even their focus is hell bent on TV.

    • fastharryDOTcom

how is it going to work with a DVR?…Is the one going to switch channels on the DVR?..It’s only a pass through, right?…So waht is gong to change the channels? the One or the DVR?

      • ElektroDragon

The Xbox One can switch channels on the external DVR connected to it using IR blaster technology. Just like the Wii U gamepad can switch channels on your DVR with the same tech. It’s been confirmed. So yes, passthrough + IR blaster for channel switching. What I wanted was an integrated TV tuner and cable card slot so I could GET RID of my DVR and save myself the $17 a month rental fee from my cable co.

        • fastharryDOTcom

I agree with that…But let me ask you since you seem to have good knowledge…Will the one have the DVR’s menu so I can schedule recordings using the one’s interface?

          • Alex_Atkin_UK

Unlikely, with it only simulating button presses on the remote there is no way the One can know what is actually happening on your DVR.

Its only really workable for simple things like turning on and off, changing channels, where the One can assume nothing interesting is going on with the DVR. That is why its kinda useless.

Not to mention I wonder how One is going to deal with Dolby Digital coming from the DVR needing to then be mixed into One audio. Will it decode the Dolby then output as PCM over HDMI? Anything else would either mean missing One audio or poor quality from the DVR due to re-compression.

          • fastharryDOTcom

I don’t know…this whole thing sounds like a half assed attempt…and I love my 360…but I am starting to feel like everyone else…If it is not a true TV box, and I cant use half it’s functions on one end and it’s a pain to record and use the DVR on the other..why pay all this money for a “just” gaming machine….rather look at the PS4 and get raw power for gaming…

          • Dylan

From my perspective, this really doesn’t make sense.
If you want to push into making it an all-in-one machine, and push for tv,
Make it replace your tv box! Make Xbox Live cover the cost of TV channels. That would be revolutionary. But they don’t want to piss off Comcast…

If you want to require internet for DRM, make the console its own wi-fi hotspot! But they don’t want to piss off Comcast again…

Instead, your room is going to be cluttered. Still gonna need that cable box, your Xbox 360, plus Xbox One, and internet modem. It doesn’t replace anything that is already there.
That’s a big head scratcher for me

  • Abraham Soto

With the bad press generated around the DRM, online verification and
the GPU, how MS will respond ?! The bad press generated around this
things on the last weeks are going to create a domino effect on
sales. I have been a happy Xbox user since 2002 but right now I am
thinking to switch… You got two Xtra month to create a good the
presentation, please do a better job in E3.. Bad press kill systems
    before they arrive.

    • safdf

“Please Microsoft make me your b**tch, please, don’t leave me, please, please, please”
No wonder they do whatever they want with us.

  • Dennis Crosby

its funny how some many people are say so much negative things about but will eventually buy it anyw

    • Steve

I was an iPhone user from day one also, they decided that they knew more about what the consumer wanted… So I as well as millions dropped them like a bad habit. Guess who isn’t number one anymore. Xbox is no different.

    • safdf

I will buy it because is the right thing to do for MS, since I bought their stuff and paid to buy their stuff all these years, I’m the one that owes them, so I must bow before them.

    • ElektroDragon

I would have bought it anyway if it actually replaced my DVR. It can’t, and it’s not focusing on games nor as powerful at games as PS4, so I have no reason to buy it at all.

      • BostonSup

I rather a dedicated gaming system too.

As for power though, they are about equal. The only thing PS4 might have a very slight edge is faster memory (DDR3 vs DDR5) and possibly less memory usage for the OS. Other than that, all is about the same in terms of power.

        • Volitar Prime

I’m actually disappointed with the specs of the XBOne and PS4 and the fact that they are almost the same. MS missed a big opportunity. For thr price of the new Kinect and TV features we could have had more RAM, a faster CPU, and/or a more capable GPU thus making the XBOne the hands down better system.

          • BostonSup

Agreed. Kinect shouldn’t have been forced bundled with the core system (and shouldn’t be forced connected). You are probably looking at an added $50-$100 per system that could have gone towards added internals.

Kinect should just stayed an add-on, but MS is trying for the blunt force strategy (much like Windows 8)… which will hurt their sales on the XB1 and their next one after that (even if they clean house and hired better heads).

Few people will pick up XB1 over the similarly spec’d PS4 because of Kinect, Kinect exclusives, and of course MS’s love of fees. I think MS won’t be looking at huge success again until the generation after next.

          • ZappyKins

Yes! I agree – I was hoping for a little more power. But they are so close that it will not matter too much. Still, it’s annoying they didn’t just make it a little stronger GPU. But DirectX usually does a much better job than OpenGL. Will know more soon (E3).

        • ElektroDragon

It is not true, Xbox One also has 1/3rd the GPU (graphics chip) power due to 1/3rd less shaders, see the AnandTech article and educate yourself.

          • CXK

The PS4 doesnt have the power of the cloud to back it up. Microsoft will and does a far better job at operating their service. PSN is down frequently for maintenance, and lets not forget the hacks. The architecture panel that Major was a part of talked about how the One can rely on the cloud for additional processing.

          • ElektroDragon

Pffft… power of the cloud… whatever.. Marketing mumbo jumbo. It has something better: Gaikai, for backwards compatibility via streaming. As if Sony doesn’t have their own cloud. Please. Sony does cloud saves better, and did them first.

      • Shenmue

“nor as powerful at games as PS4″
        …really?

        …….this?

        ……….again?!!

        • ElektroDragon

          Really. AnandTech article proves it.

        • CXK

TEH POWAH OF TEH PS4!! Here we go again. We saw what all that power brought this generation. Annoyances to developers and gamers.

      • mightywombat

How isn’t it focusing on games? It’s an Xbox. They didn’t show off games because everyone knows that it will play games, but in the short one hour press conference they had, they wanted to show off more features than just more RAM and GPU power. In addition, E3 was only 3 weeks away at that point, so not focusing on games wasn’t a bad move, but people really didn’t understand what they were going for in the press conference (ie. hardware). I liked it more than the PS4 press conference, where Media Molecule talked about how they disliked move and then said they are working on something for like 20 minutes (without actually announcing anything).

  • safdf

Sure, Steam work on downloads and DRM, so does PSN, XBLA and WiiWare, but you don’t go buy a disc full price for those games, I mean, I don’t care about DRM in digital media, but if I buy a physical thing, something that’s in my hands and paid full price for it, why do I have to ask or pay for permission to use it?

  • safdf

It’s a useless feature, you buy consoles to play games on your TV, not watch TV on your TV.

  • ElektroDragon

YES, I know, I HAD A BETAMAX VCR in the MID-80s! Sheesh.

    • Marcus Roof

really? and what early version of AnandTech say about it buddy? did they hate it too?

      • ElektroDragon

Yes, really. I am 36, and when my father first decided to buy a VCR around 1983, he bought a Betamax player, because at the time, NO ONE KNEW that VHS would win. Around 1986, we had to switch to VHS. HENCE, I had a Betamax VCR in the 80s.

        • Marcus Roof

note, all my questions were rhetorical of course…

        • barry3218

was it like hd dvd vs blu-ray (80′s style), with added mullet.

  • http://twitter.com/ENich1 E.Nich

Seems that it doesn’t work with ie9 (can’t see the render). Or I’m doing something wrong?

  • Morgon Britton

Here is the posts from Major on his Twitter and they are listening to what we have to say and they have good answers to give us once he rounds up all of them. Once again they are LISTENING to us. here is the twitter page for those of you who want to look.

  • barry3218

AN update from Major Nelson for anyone interested ” I am working on rounding up answers, and they look pretty good. Once I have them all I’ll make a post. And yes, we are listening.”

    • Morgon Britton

Yes I read this too it was on his twitter.

    • ReadTheArticlePlz

Yea can’t wait for it. Good or bad at least having one set of defined
policies will let us know where MS stands and allow us to make our
buying decision based on facts other than rumors.

      • barry3218

exactly, it would be nice to have these questions clarified.

        • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

          Working on getting answers!

          • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

            Thank you Major, please do!

          • barry3218

thanks major, enjoy watching your shows on xbox over the past few years, we dont see you much though on the UK xbox live :-(

          • ReadTheArticlePlz

I don’t think its anywhere anymore. After that last major dashboard revision all the “shows” seemed to disappear. There used to be a whole section on the dashboard with the majors minute, kinect show, one with two British guys, etc.. and after that last major revision they were gone and I never saw them again. Do they even still make the shows?

          • barry3218

That was it. majors minute i couldnt think of the show, thanks. Theres a cool one called outsidexbox they also have a website andy farrant one of the “two british guys” is also on there. its a good show very informative and funny, they tried to bake the portal cake the other week didnt quite look like it :-).

          • barry3218

thanks i couldnt temember the name of his show, there is one on xbox live in uk dont know wether you can get it also its call outsidexbox they also have a website.

          • barry3218

Major Nelson could you please do a show on xbox live were you and don mattrick discuss what to expect form the future of xbox something like a weekly show like sentuamessage , i would love to see something like that.

          • ReadTheArticlePlz

Major, what happened to that update on Monday like you said? I noticed any mention of it has been deleted off your twitter feed and there was no update on Monday like you said you would do? We understand things happen and higher-ups don’t allow things to happen sometimes but at least tell us that instead of just deleting the mentions and hoping we forget.

  • Shawn Springer

I can still see the DRM and non existence of xbox 360 games..

  • Adam Kalina

If Kinect is required for the console to function, I’m not getting one. I’ve been an Xbox Live gold member for 8 years and have no problem canceling service and going to PS4 exclusively. I don’t want an HD camera that can see in the dark to spy on me and my family, even when the console is off.

    • mightywombat

Point it towards the wall, crazy idea, I know, but seems like it would solve a lot of your shouldn’t-be-problems.

      • Adam Kalina

The microphone is always on, listening. No matter if it’s pointed towards the wall or not. It’s a little creepy when you also factor in that the console needs to have internet access at least once in a 24 hour period to even function. It also just plain sucks that we’re forced to pay for additional hardware that we don’t want. I have no plans to ever use motion or voice controls. They sucked with the 1st gen Kinect and they’ll suck with the Xbox One.

        • mightywombat

How do you know motion and voice will suck with Xbox One? Have you used it? They worked alright enough for Kinect 1, and Kinect 2 seems to be a fully realized vision of what they originally wanted.

Also, having mandatory hardware lets developers have a common platform to develop for, which should result in even better games. Also, have you played any Kinect games? They are actually fun if you don’t let your core-ness get in the way.

Any do you really think they are going to be constantly recording audio or something? If they only sell 1 million consoles at launch, that would be 24,000,000 hours of audio produced a day. They are having it always-ready for convenience and to think outside the box.

          • Adam Kalina

I bought Kinect and played several games with it. After the initial gimmick feeling wears off, you begin to realize that none of these games are “Better with Kinect.”

The new Kinect may detect motion and voice better than the original but that won’t change the fact that they do nothing to actually enhance the gaming experience. Is speaking out a sentence in Mass Effect 3 better than pressing a button? Is performing any physical action in real life better than pressing a button? Is saying “Xbox On” really better than pressing a button?

As far as privacy is concerned, who’s to say the audio/ video data gathered by Kinect isn’t streaming to one of Microsoft’s servers?

          • ElishaFrench

Mass Effect 3 used Kinect well… I would rather say “Inara Singularity” than have to mess with the wheel menu. Like you, in the dialogue it didn’t help but I’m never going to fault a developer for giving you too many choices in how you play their game.

          • ElektroDragon

Worked well? More like worked only 66% of the time without having to repeat yourself, which was enough for me to stop using it after 2 hours.

          • ElishaFrench

Well your experience was different from mine. I only had to say it once for it to work.

          • CXK

I’m sure you can turn off sharing data with Microsoft. If not, I doubt they’re going through the trouble and spending the money to film your every move/statement and store it on servers. At the most its probably feedback to their servers in the form of text, like error reporting on PCs and Macs.

I dont know why everyone thinks they’re special enough to be filmed 24 hours a day and that there would be someone actually watching it. The NSA has servers listening to your phone calls, watching your moves online and probably knows where you go daily. Does anyone actually use that? Probably not, unless you’re looking to kill large groups of people.

          • Roberto Merino

“As far as privacy is concerned, who’s to say the audio/ video data gathered by Kinect isn’t streaming to one of Microsoft’s servers?”

You know it because Kinect is not gathering any audio or video, when the X1 is off, kinect will be in stand by mode, it is just waiting for a command similar to “Xbox On” nothing else, its camera is not activated and as it does not have any internal storage, it is not recording anything either.

        • barry3218

its always listening, but that doesnt mean its recording, its listening for the words xbox on that is all, its not going to be recording anything, the only time its sends anonymous data to improve speech recognition is if you OPT IN to that just as you can do on xbox360 theres an option that says OPT in or OUT of usage data. why has no one mentioned the fact that you use a headset online now the could be listening to you then, it because there not what makes you so important MS want to listen to your voice, they dont even want to speak to me on the phone(customer service line) so i highly doubt they will be listening in to me through kinect.

    • Does Not Equal

Okay, cool. I don’t think anyone will try to change your mind.

    • PSN_IS_GARBAGE

This is the one thing that I don’t see as a big deal.. probably the only thing. Personally I think you should be more concerned with the DRM restrictions more than anything else.

I’m not saying you are paranoid or anything because I don’t like the idea that it’s always on listening to you either but seriously I wouldn’t be doing or saying anything wrong in my bedroom expect for smoking a bowl late at night. If MS wants to watch me Medicate, they can knock themselves out.

Still though, It’s looking like I won’t be picking this thing up anyhow.

      • ryder4life22187

I always have my current kinect on 24/7 so it’s not a big deal. Just hopefully this time around they have it fixed. It’s so annoying that when i jump in a CoD match it says I have a microphone on even though I have the microphone on the kinect disabled for games.

      • Timothy brown

Yeah unless they do some serious backpedaling on that always on needs an internet connection once every 24 hours that and do away with that crazy drm

    • Ivanx360xpira

It´ll require a kinect to function, whats the big deal about it?every console will be sold with one kinect, and probably you will be able to turn it off/on whenever you want…I think people are overreacting about it beeing a spy machine, kind a conspiracy theory…people should be concerned about those F* drones watching people around the world not about a game console…

    • Marcus Roof

I already use a powerstrip that kills any phantom electronics. kinect won’t be able to spy on me, or less conspiratorially speaking, draw phantom power from me…

    • dbushik

It’s easy to mock people for conspiracy theory thinking and throw out “it’s not always on” but there are real issues here. Mainly, intrusive data mining for advertising purposes. Yes, you can turn it off, but not when you are using the box, even without any kinect functions. The thing is explicitly designed to look into your home and at you and take in data including biometrics to be used to sell you consumer products and services. No conspiracy there at all. That is part of what this device is designed to do.

Now, I myself don’t consider that of any advantage to the user, so I see it as needlessly intrusive. It’s at best an nuisance for me as a user and I get nothign in return other than targeted marketing, which I consider a double nuisance. It’s easy to mis-characterize that as paranoia…but then again MS holds patents that specifically detail their desire to use this kind of system to do what I’m talking about so…

  • ungeheier

    This Connection is Untrusted

  • Brian Cooperider

I want the job of sitting there listening and watching to the millions of audio and video segments being recorded around the clock….seriously, I think Microsoft has better things to do then to listen to reality recordings of millions of users and hoping to capture what? That’s too funny. I still want that job though.

    • Dylan

Yeah it would probably be used more in a data collection way more than a watchful eye. In an investors meeting a Microsoft employee said with Kinect they could advertise to you based on the way you looked and talked.

Couple that with a heartbeat sensor which gauges emotions, they can sell data to 3rd parties and test products and politicians, based on your nationality and age.
Also there’s a patent where Kinect could charge money based on whoever walked into the room. Doesn’t mean it’ll happen, but it is there.

      • ryder4life22187

that would be a weird thing. Imagine waking up every morning and watching tv on ur xbox one naked what are they going to advertise to you porn.

        • Dylan

          Hah!

      • Morgon Britton

Haha so if they notice I’m fat are they gonna advertise me Mcdonalds! haha I find this funn how they would do this. But I’m not giving up hope yet because Major has new information on Monday for us.

      • Steve

It wouldn’t be too hard for the kinect to look for visual cues, to see what your drinking or eating… Then advertise to you based on the products it recognizes or thinks you might like…

  • Ivanx360xpira

I don´t think it is that ugly, just kind of boxy. Hopefully there will be a slim version in the future…

  • http://raptr.com/unscleric/about UNSCleric

We need to know the policies regarding used games and Kinect. Until then, most people are going to be quite deaf to any marketing put out there.

  • Marcus Roof

there is so much hate RE DRM and no B/C that people are forgetting 1 very important thing. The damn thing might not even work! I for one just hope I can plug it in and get 75% of what is promised…I wonder if the default music player will even have a REW and FF (current one still doesn’t after 7 years). Now that it’ll have blu-ray, some people might use it even more. hope they at least learned that lesson and the damn thing doesn’t break.

    • Morgon Britton

They rushed with the 360 that is why it had so many problems. If you think it will have problems (i don’t think it will) then purchase warranty it is very helpful when things do go wrong.

  • TheDahaka

I think the console looks fine. Ive been hoping for a console that fits nicely with home theatre components since the 16-bit era. However, until all my concerns about the console are clarified I will not be buying. Here’s hoping Major Nelson’s monday update will give us some real answers…no PR spin please.

    • boe2

I hope they will actually motivate the decisions they made.

They want to go the Steam way, I get that (ok, I’m assuming it, but it makes the most sense), only the future can tell how that will turn out.

Adding an expensive (the current gen is still 100+ euros in our stores) kinect unit leaves me puzzled about their motivation behind it though. Even if you want to make kinect controls guaranteed available in all games, there is still the issue of people gaming in small or dark rooms (or right in front of a pc monitor).

      • InfernoShade

Dude, didn’t you read/watch? They fixed the dark and small room issues. There was a nice demo video.

        • ElektroDragon

Lot of good that will do existing Kinect games though.

  • ZappyKins

Interesting that the speakers seem completely isolated from the rest of Kinect – and it looks like Kinect has a giant exhaust fan on the back. And did anyone else notice it doesn’t seem to have an on/off or eject switch? Unless the new white X is the on/off. hmmm.

    • Does Not Equal

I figure it’ll be another touch-sensitive button. I kinda preferred a button that required actual pressure, though; it’s too easy to brush against the 360′s power button and shut it off.

      • Morgon Britton

The sensor is a better option because a button can get stuck or broken. And yes they are sensor buttons.

        • ReadTheArticlePlz

I wouldn’t say better. I’ve lost count of the number of times my cat has been on the entertainment center and turned my xbox off or opened the disk tray brushing past it. Its nice in that there is not spring or anything to get stuck or break but these sensor ones you don’t even have to touch to activate, you just have to be close.

          • Morgon Britton

That’s true. That is the most rage inducing thing that could happen haha.

    • RED360

Would be nice if it was optional.

    • barry3218

There is an eject button on the left side of the disc tray, but its not on the render. Think its touch sensitive like the 360.

  • John

Seriously…why only one USB port on the side? I use USB sticks to carry my profile around to my friends and they do the same. With this we will have a problem, even more when the battery of a controller runs out and we have to plug it into a USB port to charge. I hope those USB ports support (powered) hubs as your focus on external storage is not making this any easier.

    • barry3218

There is 2 on the back aswell

      • John

I know that. But having only one port accessible on the near front makes it a pain if you want to plug in USB accessories. Nobody wants to move their entire unit from their cabinet just to plug something in.

        • barry3218

this is why they think people want kinect because of lazy people who cant be bothered to plug a usb in. i use a usb on 360 and it works so you should be able to do it on xbox one

          • John

It’s not about being lazy, it’s about not wanting to disconnect your other cables in the process of doing this.

          • barry3218

sorry the last bit should have said i use a usb hub on 360 and it works so you should be able to do it on xbox one. if you want a hub amazon sells them really cheap.

          • soop2

            First World Problems

    • Volitar Prime

You might not be able to carry your profile around on a USB stick with the XBOne. Since a broadband connection is required you will just be able to log into your account from your friend’s system therefore there will be no need to use the USB stick.

Also, we don’t know yet if there is going to be any kind of play and charge kit for these new controllers. We’re not even sure what kind of batteries they use. I have read conflicting reports about them either having a built in non-replaceable rechargeable battery or just normal AAs like the current ones.

      • John

That was always possible on the Xbox 360 through profile recovery as well, but that takes a lot longer than just taking your profile on a USB stick with you and plugging it in, unless that has changed on the Xbox One and recovery is much faster.

They use 2AA (horzontally instead of vertically) or a custom battery pack from what I was told and there will be no play and charge because it will simply plug in with a mini-USB (on the top of the controller) to USB-A cable.

    • ElektroDragon

Because they only care about those who use this to watch TV.

    • Michael Burden

You know there are these things on the market called powered USB hubs, right?

      • John

Yeah…you know if a few spare ports would be there it would be more “ONE” right??? :D ;)

  • Alex_Atkin_UK

I think they made Kinect 2 this large purely so you wouldn’t have room to fit PS Eye 2 next to it. ;)

    • Volitar Prime

But somehow we are expected to put our original Kinect next to it.

    • Nexxd

The kinect 2 has a arm that comes out and punches the PS eye 2 straight off the telly. :)

  • Jaffa Cake King

Go check the prices of games on Steam and then check the prices for them on Games on Demand. I have over 200+ games on Steam and i don’t think i paid over £10 for any of them. Steam periodically have crazy sales which Xbox and PSN don’t even come close to.

As far as Kinect is concerned if you trust them then that’s fine. I do not. I don’t want it connected to the console and i don’t even want to buy it in the first place.

hello major nelson my name is dan .my screen name is dantheman1976 i been a loyal fan for the xbox for over 5 years. i have downloaded over $500.00 in the dlc and the games on demand even movies also it is ashame that i cant download to the xbox one everything that you all have described for the xbox one i can do on my computer like skype i dont see the kinect for the xbox one for the tv i dont watch tv that much i have netflix for that everything that you have described i am not interested in it at all the xbox 360 kinect is fine with me because i dont use it much i can understand that the games are not backwards compatable on the disc themselves but i paid good money on the all the arcade titles that i should own and have for myself on my systems because they dont play on anything else but my xbox 360 live profile because thay dont carry any disc it is through your server that i downloaded all that from so most likely i will go to get a ps4 instead of getting a xbox one console it has been a great 5 years while it lasted but everything that you all are doing is not right i have got the star wars console halo reach and i have the halo 4 console mw3 console and the mw2 console and the original xbox 360 console so i was a big fan of xbox 360 as you guys are saying that you all arent going to do anything about the new xbox 0ne so therefore all my money that i invested in is all gone and is wasted so in order for me to renew my xbox 360 account i dont think i will be renewing my xbox 360 account next year i dont care that if you all get the new call of duty maps first i spent $60.00 to download it and i spent $50.00 for the season map pass to download right there i spent $110.00 and you guys are doing this to me it is not right for all the consumers who downloaded the dlc stuff for the xbox 360 here is my screen name it is dantheman1976 thank you for your time i hope i hear from you soon your loyal customer for now dan

Not only did he type an entire paragraph without a single period, but he did it twice.

Im with Dan, My Screen name is BEN500, i may not have spent a lot of money on DLC, but i have spent some, i have a current balance of MS points that i will use for Skyrim DLC i think, this is a point to the fact that this game is along game, i have played it for over a year (on and off) and the DLC offers long term game play, all of which will be dead in the water come XBOX ONE unless i keep my 360. So here are the other issues i would like cleared up. is it true that games will carry unique IDS? So things like trading will be a hassle, borrowing a game off a mate, renting a game etc.. will all be either costly or impossible? if so thanks for removing social gaming but at least i can skype my mate and pretend to be in the same room. (if your thinking just DL my profile try living in a country with slower internet connection.
is it true it needs to be online 24/7?
one USB port.. ARE YOU KIDDING? there should be 4-6 at least?
no backwards compatibility OR even an offer to send you our disks and get a Digital copy that would work on the ONE.

The only thing i see that you have listened too from fans of the 360 is that you added a blu-ray drive. you seem to be removing the “gamer” from the games device. I love Halo and the 360, i have been a massive fanboy in this respect, i have been loyal to MS, (WIN8, Phone etc. i wanted a Surface too, but you let me down on HDD space)

I am still sitting on the fence with this, i dont know where to go with my next console or to even bother and return to PC gaming, at least then i will get games and not Skype-of-duty.

i guess its good though that we can pipe our TV through our new xbox one, we can say tv and get that channel, as the keynote guy said it takes away the need for the remote control.. until you need to change channel, volume, get info, use record functions etc.. but at least we can skype while watching tv, or use IE.

one of the biggest things about second screen research is that people use their second screen device while watching tv.. we use the tablets and phones for information, social networking and skype while watching TV.. this research as far as i read it, already makes the “snap-to” funtion of ONE redundant. But i guess its a nice feature from Win8..

All in all.. where do we go now, Xbox seem to have rattled the games cages but dont seem to have produced enough for non or lite gamers to out and spend $400 on an under the TV social-multimedia device, while overnight destroying the “second-hand” industry and preventing “gateway” gaming (eg, buying COD1 seconds hand, loving it and the pre-ordering COD2-6, based on the gateway drug model)

All this combined to me and from what i read around the net spells the same kind of sales reaction you had with surface. History shows there are only ever 2 games consoles holding the BIG titles at a time (NES-Master system, SNES-Megadrive, N64 PS1, PS2-XBOX, 360-PS3) other consoles in this time have fallen flat or not quite lived up to hype (Wii) so i fear this may spell the end of Xbox, as they seem to no longer be the Gamers console.

Good luck at E3 and with launch. i hope i am wrong.

“how does more features and more accessibility suddenly become something that sucks?! ”
Because it’s supposed to be a console, not a tablet of smartphone. And the accessibility requires you to allow an ever listening ear that has to connect to the net often. MS can say it’s safe, but who can be sure hackers won’t use it.

Im really excited about the feel of the controller. Just cant wait to try it out. As for the rest of the stuff going on, im just going to wait until after E3 when we have all the information to make my decision. I am hoping MS really pull it out of the bag.

    • kingcrusher

Totally agree. The controller actually is what has me excited. It’s not drastically different, but adds enough that it’s interesting. Can’t wait to get my grubby little paws on it.

100% agreement with the rest of what you said.
