Xbox LIVE Summer of Arcade titles

Summer of Arcade returns for what promises to be another exciting year of great games on Xbox Live.  It doesn’t matter what kind of games you like, we’ve got a diverse line-up of games with something for everyone including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows from Activision, Flashback by Ubisoft, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons by 505 Games, and Charlie Murder from Microsoft Studios.  Summer of Arcade kicks off August 7th.

Arcade, Marketplace By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • Boss

Bring out a Xbox One without the Kinect for $299

    • Gus

      someone give him a cookie

    • JuanCabrera

And have an offline mode. We don’t mind getting up to change discs!

    • Bledderblabla

The only thing holding me back from buying a Xbox isn’t the price, but the manditory Kinect. It’s such a scary anti-privacy device.
I’m a Sony guy. I had the PS1, PS2 and PS3. But I would ignore the PS4 for an Xbox One WITH OUT the Kinect. I really like the exclusives Microsoft has. But with the Kinect I’m just going to buy a PS4. And I’ll just hope Microsoft will get their senses back and release an Xbox One Slim somewhere in the future WITH OUT the Kinect.

  • Jorge Garza

    Nothing special.

  • Hector Rubio

What happened to the sunny day sale?

    • Bennijin

      It rained.

  • Ivanx360xpira

will be nice to revisit flashback, last time I played it I was 12…a long time ago…

    • Socal71

Yeah, that’s the only one that looked good to me. Definitely getting that one, hopefully it’s first.

  • EDfromRED

    Not one game I want

  • Smitty three-tone

Flashback! Sweet! Will definitely get this one (for Wii U if available on it). Have fond memories of that game!

  • tabicat

What’s the point of buying these games if they’re not going to work on an Xbox One? Oh that’s right, I’m not going to buy an Xbox One.

    • Does Not Equal

      Then why did you bother?

  • Gus

you guys are better off playing State of Decay… such an awesome game from awesome, accessible and honest developers!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Natetendo83 Nate Brown

I pains me to say it but after years of supporting the Xbox brand I am officially jumping out. Sony won my business last night on the simple fact that they are respecting the Right of First Sale. If I buy it, it’s mine. Until you return to that model and ditch your daily check ins I cannot support your console out of principle.

    • jlh

That’s great but what does it have to do with Summer of Arcade?

      • http://www.facebook.com/Natetendo83 Nate Brown

This is the last summer I’ll have a console that is applicable to such a thing?

  • slider2nl

not going to buy any of those keep my money in my pocket for the PS4

    • マリオ

I have to buy something at some point. I still have MSP.

      • Chris Grub

        Just save it for GTAV.

  • マリオ

This is as weak as the current deal of the week.

  • FoxHound R – Xbox One Day One

    Excited!

    • ElektroDragon

      Oh god, he’s back!

  • slider2nl

it will help if they bring backwards compatibility back to the xbox one drop the policies and continue as normal like the 360

    • Jorge Garza

Actually, I think I could deal with the DRM bs if they include backwards compatibility…

      • Ivanx360xpira

they could also provide a code to allow you to play offline, you buy the original game and it comes with a code…I mean there´s a lot of thing they could do…

        • Jedi Dna

No it won’t! Any code needs a server to authenticate it, otherwise its useless… MS should do like Sony! Should Hear and respect its customers making the disc itself to be one and only key to the game!

          • Ivanx360xpira

I agree…but I just looking for alternatives, once probably they won´t change anything…

          • Jorge Garza

            Yeah, but just ONCE.

        • Chuck

And then what? You give the game away to a friend so you can play offline while they get a free game. XboxOne does not use the game disc at all after the install. Not even for a ‘do you really own it’ check.

      • Chuck

I could deal with DRM if it didn’t mean that I would have to repeatadly by the same game for different consoles. I like to own multiple consoles so I can be playing one game while somebody else is playing something else in a different room. If they give me multiple licenses maybe this problem goes away.

        • jlh

You can do that because you have a shared game library. You can play on your main console while someone else plays on their account on another console from the same game library.

  • DarthBurrito

Larry, I don’t think you’re getting anyone excited about a summer sale right now.

    • Bennijin

It’s not even a sale, it’s Summer of Overprice.

    • Chuck

      He’s just doing his job.

  • Jorge Garza

Even if MS drop their DRM policies, they already treated us like criminals…

    • slider2nl

      true

    • Ivanx360xpira

this is so true…the’re supposing everyone practices piracy…sad

    • Guest

Just leave it for GTAV DLC.

    • Chuck

I really don’t think DRM is going anywhere. The console is built to multitask (search in one game while playing another, etc.) the only way you can do that is if the games are run from the harddrive without a disc in the drive check, ala 360. So to make sure people aren’t just installing the games and then giving them to a friend so they can both play it at the same time they needed some type of DRM.

Now maybe the whole idea was crappy from the start, but I see how they arrived at it. Doesn’t mean I like it.

      • BostonSup

That makes sense. They could change the software to force the game to be in the drive in order to play (like how it is in the Xbox360). That is the only fix that they could do. But then again, they would probably have to remove features. They screwed up on this. They should have said what you just said or keep it status quo. Now they either look greedy or they remove features… they put themselves between a rock and a hard place.

      • Jorge Garza

        I never heard that…

I think you can’t load 2 games at the same time and switch between the two, I think that’s only available for 1 game + apps.

        • jlh

They showed it off at the conference and it was very cool. The lady (sorry forgot her name) was playing Ryse while the system was searching for a KI match. When an opponent was found it switched instantly to KI. Being able to jump in and out of games like that is fantastic. They probably should have shown more of it but the community gets so impatient when they try to show cool tech stuff.

          • Jorge Garza

            Totally right, thank you.

  • silentazure

Its the summer of games that wont work on the new console coming out in November. Yay!

    • Bennijin

I thought we weren’t buying that,

  • Boss

Why not bring Sales like Steam every weekend?

    • Gus

      because Microsoft… or Micro$oft…

      • Does Not Equal

        What an original joke!

  • DudBug

    Can’t wait for Flashback!

Sorry for hijacking this thread, though, but I don’t know where else to ask this question: are the prices of Xbox One and PS4 games going to be the same?

If they are, then this makes a mockery oh what Microsoft has been doing and is one final kick in the teeth for the consumers. Shouldn’t game developers be getting more per sale per Xbox One game because of the anti-piracy and used game restrictions? Let us assume that Xbox One and PS4 games require an equal amount of time and money to develop, but the developers earn more for each of their Xbox One games sold, so why then should Xbox One gamers have to pay the same price? It’s blatantly unfair.

If the response to this argument is that the developers don’t make more per game on the Xbox One then why on earth have these measures been introduced? The only argument for these measures (i.e. combatting piracy and second-hand sales) is the very same argument that justifies lower game prices for the Xbox One.

    • Socal71

Microsoft has already stated that they do not get these fees. It’s up to the developer to charge them and it’s not mandatory. So how would that effect prices? Wholesale is about $30 – $35 a game and the rest is made up at retail.

      • DudBug

Ok, maybe I have misunderstood things but I was under the impressions that the new measures would cut down on the number of second-hand sales and that the reason for this was, presumably, so that more brand new games would be bought and don’t Microsoft and the publishers profit from this? If Microsoft has introduced this for the sake of the publishers then shouldn’t they be fighting our corner so that the extra income which these measures are designed to generate (otherwise, why bother with them?) gets passed on to us?

        • Socal71

Because of Steam, I actually believe Microsoft when they say this came about from working ‘with’ developers. Meaning developers wanted this on consoles too. Sony is only hurting themselves by caving to gamers that will gladly hack their console and not pay for anything. I don’t expect prices to come down, but we should expect bigger and better sales on older titles. I like Steam, but if they didn’t have those sales, they would nothing. Where consoles have had no problem selling games at $59.99.

    • Gus

i haven’t seen any hint of information that confirms or denies the prices of next gen games. from a business perspective, it does not make any sense to have multiplatform games with different prices on consoles. therefore exclusives should also have the same price tag in my honest opinion, so all new games will cost the same.

    • Druid’s Nectar

I think you’ll find a game is developed for a particular platform, and that is where the longest amount of development time is spent. Once complete, or almost complete, the game is just ported to the other platforms, this doesn’t take anywhere near as long to do as the initial development (where the real work is).

Now that the One, PS4 and PC are all running x86 chips, the porting of the games got somewhat easier than it used to be when there was x86, PPC and CEL to contend with. What this is likely to mean is that the developers will save a more time and money getting the game to the other platforms.

As far as piracy goes, if MS’s measures work out, then piracy will be reduced, and therefore developers will see sales on the One increase, in comparison to other platforms. This should in turn encourage them to develop more games and content for the One. On the other hand, you may find pirates are put off by MS’s measures, and cause an increase in sales in the PS4 (or PC), where it may be easier to pirate games.

  • O Mosqueda

I’m never too excited about these, last year for my tastes, only Trials Evolution was interesting but too expensive, I know everybody loved Minecraft but it’s not my type of game.
I was looking forward to see the Sunny Day Sale, but I guess is gonna be rainy instead.

  • CrunkE4

Microsoft it’s easy denounce that stupid used game rule and keep it like
last time. Denounce that constantly logging in. You also have a cheaper
xbox when you come out with a version that doesn’t have the kinect.
    EVERYONE PLEASE COPY AND PASTE.

    • O Mosqueda

Really dude, there’s still a thread raging on for that, and honestly, “COPY AND PASTE”, I’ve read better comments than yours in that thread I told you and they don’t type “COPY AND PASTE”.

    • Chuck

I don’t participate in chain letters.

  • DeviousScissors

Good to see MS taking decisive action and communicating with its playerbase on important topics in a timely and effective way, OH WAIT, never mind.

    • Chuck

They will probably be reeling for a week. I woudlnt’ expect a response until July it takes a whlie to get policies straight.

  • Bennijin

    Looks really boring.

  • Ivanx360xpira

I have a suggestion…why not to provide a code when you buy a game to allow you to play offline, the only thing you have to do is to enter into your account and activate it, you could do it from a lan house, I don´t known… anywhere that has internet…then you can travel and play it if the place you go doesnt have internet, or at home without internet…

    • Bennijin

      Shouldn’t even have to.

      • Ivanx360xpira

        agreed.

    • O Mosqueda

This is for 360, I play offline, in fact I can’t connect it right now. This is not the place for that, what’s done is done and the 360 isn’t yet. Let’s keep this thread clean, OK?

      • Ivanx360xpira

        ok man, take ease…just a suggestion…

    • Does Not Equal

I’m pretty sure the Summer of Arcade games can be played offline.

      • Ivanx360xpira

    • Chuck

There has been discussions of codes for active duty personnel. The problem ultimately comes down to the fact the XOne isn’t designed to run games from the disc at all (or even check the disc). The integrated strategy that allows you to be playing one game while be matchmaking in another game doesn’t allow it. So if they gave you a code what is to stop you from just giving the disc away and then your buddy gets the game for free, minus the offline code sure, but he still gets to play and the publishers are still out of money.

  • BostonSup

Is the sunny day sale (or whatever it is called) still on?

  • Dein Vater

HAHA microsoft is so hard raped, unbelievable.

    • O Mosqueda

And that has to do with Summer of Arcade for XBOX 360 because……..
(Please, go to the other +7000 comment thread instead)

  • Sean Mccoy

hey major why so quiet say something

    • O Mosqueda

Yeah, say something about Sunny Day, or has it indeed gone Rainy?

      • Andy

Very dull and rainy in Redmond I would guess.

        • ElektroDragon

Indeed, it is very dull and rainy here today. I’m 15 min north of Redmond.

          • Andy

Even the big man upstairs is getting a PS4 then?

          • Sean Mccoy

even the red man is too

          • Andy

            Thats never good. ;)

      • Sean Mccoy

come on major or people will call u a major chicken

        • BostonSup

Microsoft screwed up, not Major. He is not the enemy. State what you want about the company, but don’t take out MS’s horrid business plan on him.

    • ElektroDragon

Nothing will be said. It will beet kept quiet now and they will try to sell it to the masses based on ignorance.

    • BostonSup

I’m sure it is a busy week (E3), lots of anger towards him, even though he doesn’t decide things, and I am sure MS is retreating and figuring out how to fix their mistake (I doubt they expected Sony to exploit their horrible decisions like they did during their E3 conference).

I am sure he will respond to on-topic questions when he can.

      • Chuck

It might be too late to fix DRM before release (and I’m not sure they or the publishers want them too) but they could back peddle on the price, come down by $100 would appease at least some of the fan base.

        • BostonSup

Public opinion went way down for them, but they could fix the DRM if it is just software/server implementation. The same can be said of the Kinect, if it isn’t hardware dependent then they could possibly remove the Kinect in the bundles and sell for $100 less.

None of it will be easy, but they have little choice right now. They dug themselves quite a hole.

          • O Mosqueda

Summer of Arcade and (possibly) Sunny Day in here. Please go to the other thread, over 7000 comments can’t be wrong, but they belong there.

          • BostonSup

Just responding back, on topic or not.

  • Andy

I guess its a plus point, get to use up my M$ points.

  • Sean Mccoy

new name for major nelson (major chicken nelson)

    • Andy

As much as I am up for a laugh at M$ expense, try and remember that Larry probably had zero say on the direction Xbox One was heading.
Its like that old saying “Dont shoot the messenger”

      • O Mosqueda

Indeed, I’m as angry as anyone, I don’t like those “policies” at all, but there’s a place and time for everything and this is not it. Major Nelson is just the messenger, not the developer nor the CEO.

        • E.Nich

In ancient times, the messenger was always killed if the message was not pleasant. But yeah, Major is not responsible for the direction MS is taking (at least I hope so), since he’s also a gamer.

  • http://twitter.com/LukasHeinzel Lukas Heinzel

I think ist Flashback, Brothers and Charlie Murder for me, so the 4th will be free anyway.

  • ElektroDragon

When will people get sick of games with badly animated art that a 5 year old could draw? I’m looking at you “Charlie Murder”.

    • O Mosqueda

If the game is fun, the art is the least important. DDII Wander of the Dragons had an average art but that didn’t save it. We got tired of games like Wander of the Dragons. About the game, let my try it first, or try it you first for that matter.

    • Chuck

When will people get tired of pretty games with terrible game play.

  • Jared

What is the Sunny Day Sales

  • Todd Wegman

I am not going to give Microsoft any more of my money… I will let my Xbox Live Gold account expire and I will support the PS4 and PS+. I didn’t have to think too hard to pre-order the PS4 from amazon. I hope Microsoft learns from their mistakes (I think Sony has proven that they learned from their past mistakes).

    • O Mosqueda

Supporting a machine you already have and has good games until is done for, won’t make you buy the next gen of the same family, I know I won’t.

    • Milton Jerez

      who cares? move on…

I´m always online… for me is OK

XBOX ONE let me to sell my games… a lend to My friend, all my family can play with my game… what is the problem?

  • BostonSup

Is this the sunny day sale?
    http:// marketplace.xbox. com/en-US/Promotion/Special-Sales

“Lots of great games are going on sale for a limited time. Pick up classics like Tomb Raider Underworld, Dungeon Siege III, Game of Thrones, Guardian of Middle-earth and many more at discounts of up to 50% off!”

Tomb Raider Underworld doesn’t appear on the last (or I don’t see it), which makes me think that there could be more games than is listed on that site.

    • O Mosqueda

I don’t have it in my region, is this gonna be worldwide? I hope they change them daily, today’s picks, if that is the page, were a little lame.

      • BostonSup

I changed it to the Canadian region and it was all the Tomb Raider XBLA game/DLCs. Now I don’t know if this sale is regional or if the specials are not updated yet, or if this is completely separate from the Sunny Day sale.

I wasn’t impressed with the sales either. I am going to wait to see if it is updated, and if not will buy the new Tomb Raider GonD and State of Decay instead.

      • ikari_paul

usually “Games on Demand” sales are only for the US market. the rest, well, is out of luck

        • O Mosqueda

They are in my region but are not announced at the page, I checked game by game and they match. Still “suckish”, the GoDs I rather have ‘em physically.

          • ikari_paul

will check it out then. i also prefer physycal copies, but for the right price, i might go digital. its all about the price (though i feel microsoft thinks that digital and physicial copies should be the same high price. the sooner they learn something with steam, the better)

    • Bennijin

Ew, most of those games suck.

  • Bush O Connor

the music in that video was torture, turtles looked good.

  • Louis AintnoHipster Britton

Not going to buy anymore XBLA games seeing how I will not be able to play them on the next system…Smooth move Xbox

    • Bennijin

The next system that we’re not buying?

      • silentazure

Why spend more money on XBL when going Sony next generation?

        • Bennijin

          Got points left over.

        • Milton Jerez

why spend more time on Majornelson site… plz, move on…

we want to spend time in all relative to XBOX

    • E.Nich

I don’t understand that reasoning. You can play it in x360, since it’s a game for the x360. You should enjoy the games that come out if you like them, without thinking of next-gens or such things, after all, those are games for the current gen.
I won’t buy a X1, so I don’t care about b/c anymore. That said, if X1 had: b/c, no such abusing DRM, no always connect AND no kinect, I’d buy one… eventually.

    • TheDahaka

Fair enough. I will still support 360…only less. It is a good product, which ufortunately cant be said for xbox one

      • Nathan O

It is not out yet, it is impossible to judge how good of a product it will be.

    • Milton Jerez

so what? go ahead… move your *** plz…

    • GmailIsDown

If I remember correctly, MS said there would be hundreds of Xbox 360 games rolling out in the next couple of years. There is a new revision of Xbox 360 console out yesterday.

    • Nathan O

Just planning on chucking your 360 away?

  • Liquidfx Xboxdude

hey has anyone seen that app where m$ has free xbox 360 games listed? lol lol lol it is literally 6 and the are either old or suck bad. what the heck is going on with M$? did they just stop caring about the xbox name in general? sad times. luckily there is ps4 in the near future. yay!

    • Volitar Prime

Well you can get Fable III for free right now. That’s a pretty good game.

      • JoeGrahamcracker

Fable 3 sucks. Fable 2 is what they should be giving away to let people know who are new to Fable that it hasn’t always sucked.

    • roozbeh

i agree about this month but im waitin till august

  • ryder4life22187

looks like the worst summer of arcade so far. only game i sorta want to try out was turtles they should have added ducktales in there cuz thats an instant buy for me.

  • TheDahaka

    Flashback is a masterpiece.

  • jlh

I’ve been waiting for Charlie Murder for so long. I didn’t think that game would ever come out. I’ll probably pick up all four though I’m little unsure about the Turtles.

    • E.Nich

Yeah, I know what you mean, I have to demo the TMNT to see if it’s funny to play it or not.

  • E.Nich

Flashback and TMNT: Out of the Shadows look interesting, maybe I’ll buy them.

  • Daryl Aiken

    Good games this summer.

  • Shamar Henry

Gamers Without Internet Can Stick With Xbox 360, Says Microsoft. Google

    • kingcrusher

Insane I tell ya. Talk about disrespect and stupidity. No respect, no respect. And they wonder why everyone’s up in arms about their new console? LOL

      • eAbyss

Yeah, they basically said that if you don’t have internet you can go f*** yourself.

  • 4l3x T0rr3s

Flashback! :D I loved that game

  • O Mosqueda

Sunny Day Sales are not gonna happen, are they?
Is it really “Tons of Games on Sale”?

    • O Mosqueda

One more day and still nothing about this Sunny Day Sale, if it really is “Tons of Games on Sale”, no wonder they haven’t say anything.

  • Sean Mccoy

lets all call their call center seems like they cant hear us here so lets all get together and flood their call center with calls 24/7…..

    • kingcrusher

And say what? “Just checking in!” LOL

      • neohemp

I’m sure these Filipino people that take calls for 4 grand a year are super concerned about you not liking the Xbox One

      • O Mosqueda

I wish that as much as they are complaining for something they can’t yet buy, they complain about that bad imitation of Big Brother which only merit he has and made him the president is the color of his skin.

  • QuixoticRocket

Don’t throw away your xbox 360. There’s no rule that you can’t have both consoles. I plan on keeping the 360 for quite a while.

  • Nathan O

They will never ditch the kinect but you will end up wanting one after the first year of the X1′s release.

  • http://about.me/chuck.yoder Chuck Yoder

How in the world could you create a new Xbox 360 model and cheap out by not putting an optical audio out like was in the Slim model?

  • Nathan O

Don’t know about that, I saw a lot of MS exclusives and new IP’s at E3.

  • Liquidfx Xboxdude

wiiu was not $499. lol not even close. it was $299 to $350
