Self Publishing is coming to Xbox One

I had a great chat with Marc Whitten about self publishing and Xbox One. I’ve got him scheduled to come on the podcast next week update us on Xbox One, but in the meantime he wanted me to share some great news with you about the upcoming Xbox One Self Publishing program that we’ve been working on for some time.

Marc had this to say:

Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We’ll have more details on the program and the timeline at Gamescom in August.

So….now you know one of the reasons I am looking forward to GamesCom.

  • Liquidfx Xboxdude

    hmmm. sounds cool.

  • Alex

Give me crazy Kinect games indie developers.

    • http://www.vincebullinger.com Vince Bullinger

I can only imagine what creative people with a lot of free time can achieve with a Kinect…

      • usrev

the pc kinect has some crazy stuff, google it. there is one where a guy DJs using kinects only, he links like 4 of them together or something.

      • beardyman3218

search for kinect trash can :)

    • beardyman3218

Im looking forward to indie kinect games, we didnt have many if any on 360 because the install base want there, devs know everyone who owns an xbox one has a kinect, mandatory kinect was a brilliant strategy, triple a games are now onboard and willing to develope for kienct, battlefield 4 is going to use kinect as well.

  • david_hoyland

Good news. Is it a full fat version though or sectioned off in the Apps part similar to XBLIG?

Also don’t go dropping the Kinect at some stage as has been rumoured.

If you do, you and I don’t do business again. Not for shoelaces or a stick of gum.

    • Machaira

It’s already been stated that all games, pro and indie, would be lumped together. I assume this still holds true.

  • Jason Voorhees

Excellent news Major! We always knew you had some kind of app store in the works where everybody could just publishe like on Windows (Phone) 8. It was heavily hinted at at the Build conference.

  • http://twitter.com/xbudz Xbudz

I’m looking forward to the other surprises.
    Crackdown is one, right?

  • Senses Failed

AKA everyone moaned about indie stuff and praised the ps4, so once again we buckled

  • http://twitter.com/xbudz Xbudz

I don’t mind all of the reactionary changes to Xbox One.
Microsoft should include 1 year of Xbox LIVE with new consoles instead of a price drop.
That would level the playing field with PS4, since PS+ is pretty much a required purchase.

    • xxtray90xx

I think it does with the day one edition

      • Black Mamba

        Link?

      • Black Mamba

        How come you deleted it?

        • xxtray90xx

          Its should be showing

          • Black Mamba

Just tell me the name of the website and ill find it.

  • Sledg

Great news! The fact that you can use your console as a dev kit is amazing. And if the turnaround time for certification is 14 days then that’s great news as well.

  • http://twitter.com/xbudz Xbudz

The Dev Kit functionality won’t be ready at launch.
It would have been nice if it was.

  • consumedesign

Now dump the Kinect and drop it by $100 please.

    • Sledg

      *shakes head in disbelief*

      Apparently, this never gets old!

    • Mik3t

Indie game + kinect could be some of the most interesting output from this announcement

You usually find the most interesting innovation from small independent teams

    • Mr XBob

You literally have no clue. Go and get a PS4, you obviously have no idea why Kinect is an integral part of the system.

      • Ryan

        like yourself

        • Mr XBob

I see you’ve posted this comment a few times. I’m not interested in your fanboy wars – go somewhere else. We’re gamers who enjoy the new ideas Kinect can bring.

As stated: don’t like it? Don’t buy it. Or buy it and don’t buy Kinect games. Simple choices, stop making a drama out of it :)

          • consumedesign

Have Kinect now… barely use and don’t really care for it. Kids like it somewhat but it doesn’t track too well for them. I don’t want it again and/or be forced into buying one (let alone connected/on full time, turn mine off when not using).

          • Mr XBob

Pro tip: don’t buy an Xbox One, or don’t use Kinect games.

Despite it being on a removable cable, it is part of the Xbox One hardware. The cable is merely so you can place it where it can see (it would be impossible to have it built-into the actual console box, since most people have them low under their TV or hidden in a cabinet).

It’s a major addition to the OS and is there for all developers to use. Forget what you know about Kinect on 360. That was an accessory that 99% of developers/publishers didn’t care to use properly because they didn’t know what part of their audience would have it. So we got spammed with cheap and easy dancing games or sports collections.

Being a full part of the OS, being included with every single console, being far more accurate, it will be used in some brilliant ways. People need to relax and give it a chance.

    • Bibo

If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. No one is holding a gun to your head. Whatever you do there’s always someone that’s going to whine.

      • Ryan

        like you

        • Bibo

          Hardly

  • Warablo

    Guys, I love the change.

  • Joshua Guss

When we’re make a voice message on XBOX
ONE, can y’all give us more than 15 seconds to say what we gotta say? When you’re giving someone a voice
message on a telephone, 70% of the time it’s more than 15 seconds. That’s crazy
thinking of what you gonna say and racing with a clock.

    • Does Not Equal

I don’t think that voice messages count as self-publishing.

  • fede4488

Sony Playstation, setting trends since 1994…

    • roozbeh

i believe this was meant for n4g

  • Kieran

If Microsoft reduced the price somehow of XB1 or offered a years gold and a new headset? I would seriously consider buying an XB1.

PS4 is good for the price i would need to see something back from Microsoft to remain an X box live user.

Well done, Microsoft by allowing indies to self publish. You are eroding the distrust some had of you!

    • xxtray90xx

Once again you are going to spend 500+ at the ps4 launch anyway jesus christ and if 500 is too much if a asking price than 400 should be a little bit out of your price range still youre worrying about the wrong stuff and who actually uses the regular headset anymore

      • Jordan Vasquez

Yes but at $500 he will have around 3 games ready to be played on PS4. Your argument is flawed. And maybe he doesn’t care about kinect, so why pay an extra $100? I’m certainly not.

        • xxtray90xx

          Plus a subscription to ps+ n 3 games I hardly doubted 1 game plus a subscription is easly 500

          • Jordan Vasquez

Free to play games bro, and good ones, with no PS+ required for said games. Get your facts straight before spouting lies.

And why does it matter? You have to pay for XBL gold which costs more! So what’s your point? Your argument is still, very flawed.

          • xxtray90xx

Dude not all of your free to plays will be online n ready to play on launch

          • Jordan Vasquez

Ok, which is why I said around 3. Someone could buy a game off the Store. Why does it matter, you still are missing my point.
You have a whole $100 more to play with… Xbox One does not. You have not supported your case at all.

          • xxtray90xx

Yeah lmao youre right have fun with your 1 game 1 free play game n your 30 dollas u have left over from knack lol

          • Jordan Vasquez

Yet again, you failed to prove your point. Why I even bother trying to debate with fanboys is beyond me.

          • xxtray90xx

Lmao of course I’m thefan boy here who clearly Is on a website for the console he support n yet a sony guy is here trying to say I’m a fanboy on a xbox site? Isnt there a sony site with all the “great”things the ps4 is doing out there somewhere?

          • Jordan Vasquez

I’m not a fanboy, I own 2 Xbox 360′s for Christ’s sake. I am merely citing facts, which you can’t seem to take. Why should I go on a Sony site, so I can piss and moan about their PSN network or about how basic things such as updating the system sucks? Oh wait, I DO THAT TOO! How about you open up your mind to the options that you have, and actually make an informed decision. I know, that must be strange to do, but its ok, you don’t have to be scared, a lot of intelligent people do it all the time!

          • xxtray90xx

Lol you seem a bit upset sir may I give u a hug?

          • Jordan Vasquez

I’m not upset at all, just trying to convince another fellow human being to use their brain. :-)

          • usrev

planetside 2 will be which is the best free title. and planetside 2 is pretty awesome.

      • Kieran

How will i be paying 500 at Launch for a PS4. iT ONLY 399 Euros. The XB1 IS 499.

Thats a saving of 100 Euros on a console that will do much the same thing as the other one.

You can’t ignore price. You are not just buying the console by itself. You have to buy games, maybe a new headset and maybe more live if it runs out!

        • xxtray90xx

          1 game 60+ psn+ 50

          • Kieran

            There is a saving of 100 picking a PS4 over XB1

I could buy a PS4+ PSN+ A GAME and it would be only 500 Euros. What i would pay now for XB1 on its own!

          • xxtray90xx

I’m saying your going to pay 500+ anyway it goes so stop bringin up the price

          • Kieran

But i get more by buying a PS4 Not sure what point your trying to make?

          • Jordan Vasquez

I’m saying the same exact thing and he hasn’t proven his point to me either…

          • beardyman3218

You save £100 but are gaining nothing other than a ps3 with better graphics, it has nothing that puts it ahead of its time like xbox one, you will be happy with ps4 at first but then xbox will continually be adding new features, doesnt bother me though as il be getting both at some point, but ps4 will only be for the exclusives.

          • usrev

            but, 1 game $60, XBL $60.

        • Machaira

Show me built-in Kinect functionality on a PS4 and you would be correct.

  • Swat

    Hardly an “industry first”

    • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

I was trying to think of who else has done it…and came up empty.

So, what other retail console can also be used as a dev kit?

      • Bibo

I love ya Major, but the Ouya already does it.. Obviously not up to par with next gen. Still, a great feature, thank you for including it!

        • xxtray90xx

          Lol ouya

          • Bibo

lol like I said, obviously not up to par with next gen, but it’s still a retail console that has this option. Its capabilities isn’t really the question here, its more along the lines of features. It has this feature, regardless of how powerful it is. Next gen wise, Xbox one will be the only one, but industry wise, it’s not the first.

        • CosmosIsKool

Can Ouya really be considered as competing in the same space as Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft? I don’t really think so.

        • Alex

OUYA is not a real thing

        • Morris ヅ

          behave lol

        • Jordan Vasquez

Idk why anyone hasn’t said this, but STEAM. Even if it isn’t a console, everyone has a computer…

        • Sledg

I don’t think some of you really understand what he means by his statement. Just wait to GamesCon and you’ll hopefully understand it more.

Ouya never needed a dev kit and can’t even compete on the same playing field.

Steam (PC games) umm yeah. I don’t even know how that is on this list.

PS4, no. It still requires a dev kit.

XBox 360, not even close to the same.

          • Bibo

As I said below, it doesn’t matter if it can compete or not. What it comes down to is feature. This feature is already available on a retail console. Ouya IS a dev kit, same as the xbox one. I simply answered his question. We’re not talking about console horsepower or competing. It’s like saying ‘well the xbox 360 is the only console that has games on a DVD. ps2/wii/whatever else doesn’t count because it can’t compete’.

          • Sledg

Look, wait till GamesCon and see what they announce and talk about. Publishing a game to a console is alot different than not requiring a separate dev kit.

          • Bibo

I understand that, and I just answered his question. There’s other retail consoles out there that are dev kits as well, and can self publish. I’m happy about the news, don’t get me wrong.

          • beardyman3218

But who has an ouya? if i want to play sonic il play on either my xbox or my phone.

      • RedDiamond70

Sorry Major but the devs can self publish on PS4 :)

        • Kieran

He said dev kit in his post. Hes referring to something other than self publishing.

        • Machaira

Even though the point wasn’t about self-publishing, show me where I can sign up to be a PS4 developer and use a retail unit. I’ve been looking and haven’t found anything. Sony (and MS) is still talking but I haven’t seen concrete proof that any indie dev will be able to get on a next-gen console.

          • RedDiamond70

Google PS4 self publishing the info is there. I don’t know how you go about actually doing it. But it has been confirmed.

        • http://oscarolim.com Oscar Olim

How much is a PS4 dev kit? xbox is £500.

      • Machaira

        the Xbox 360 ;)

      • Morris ヅ

industry’s first xbox one only ‘ONE’ i can think of lol

      • beardyman3218

This is great news indeed, i might start learning to code, i have always shown an interest in it, i was beginning to learn in xna then it was scrapped can you say what it will be using, e.g. unity?

      • Death Dealer

Xbox 360 right until XNA was cancelled. ;)

  • Milan

Don’t Tell Me That This Was The Biggest Announcement For Gamescom; I hope there will be even more bigger announcements…….Ummmm……….Crackdown?…………Left 4 Dead?

    • Kieran

Next gen Gears of War! If it was announced i probably would ignore price and buy the Xb1

      • Milan

Though it must be much better than the last GOW Judgement.

        • Kieran

Gow Judgement was an experiment, but it failed miserably. Even Epic admitted as much. The lack of content was its biggest failure.

I love to see gears of war next gen. I think it will sell well if done right and given the attention it deserves.

          • Jason Voorhees

Correct. The thing is, I really like the campaign and the new star system which gives an extra level of immersion. beating the final boss on insane solo cost me a controller :D.
But the way the multiplayer changed was just too radical and not properly balanced. Especially leaving out horde left a sour taste in the mouths of the GoW community. The new modes should have been an addition and not a replacement. Then the game would have done a lot better.

    • Quanicus

      Release Date

      • Milan

true but really thats a small announcement as we already know the month of release.

  • Mark Thompson

Well, it is certainly another big step in the right direction imho. As someone who basically just buys every console out there plus keeps a decent gaming PC, I’m quite sad that I won’t be getting the Xbox One, at least while there are so many privacy concerns regarding Kinect and this whole NSA/FBI prism issue along with concerns over targeted advertising and the data captured by kinect and how it is then used for commercial / marketing purposes.

Keep going MS, you’re on the right track I feel, If only you can do something about that damn kinect for those people, like myself, who really, really do not like it. Heck, if I could be given the option to really and truthfully turn Kinect off, opt out of advertsing, and given some kind of reassurance I could believe about my privacy then that could be the difference between getting one or not.

    • Kieran

If you have nothing to hide why worry about Kinect? I am sure there will be options for you to opt out of marketing and advertising stuff.

Surely when your TV is off you can’t be watched still?

      • Jordan Vasquez

Because not everyone wants to be spied on, even if they don’t have anything to hide…

        • Kieran

If you can’t be spied on when the TV is off. I’m fine with that. I don’t really care. Now if its still watching you while your TV is off thats kind of creepy lol

          • Jordan Vasquez

Why are you fine with being spied on period?

          • Kieran

Don’t you need Kinect for the Voice commands, Web camera interface and Skype. Its not something Microsoft can easily remove.

When i am playing games online i don’t really care if Kinect is looking at me. I’ve nothing to hide. When i am offline not gaming i would have a problem with a device that never turns off and still is recording me! Thats just my personally opinion.

          • Jordan Vasquez

First of all, what makes you NEED to do any of that? Last time I checked, I don’t need Voice commands, a web camera, or Skype to play Halo…

Fine, you are entitled to your opinion, but many people, including myself, don’t want to be spied on, period, especially with something like the Kinect. The fact that Microsoft is shoving it down your throat whether you like it or not is the problem.

          • Morris ヅ

when i switch my console off im unpluging it , its that simple

          • Black Mamba

You already being spied on anyways. Unplug it after you finish playing if you’re really that worried.

          • Jordan Vasquez

Yes you are right, I am already being spied on, but not by a camera and microphone in my living room.

I don’t want Kinect, at all. I have zero interest in anything the Kinect provides. I thought it was gimmicky before, I think its creepy now.

          • Black Mamba

            ……then don’t get the Xbox one…….

          • Jordan Vasquez

            Oh don’t worry, I’m not.

Just merely voicing my opinion as a current 360 owner.

          • Black Mamba

            Alright

          • Mark Thompson

It’s more than just the spying thing though, although Microsoft seem to have a lot to answer for in that regards, makes me very mad as a European citizen to see Microsoft so eager to handover access to my Hotmail, Skydrive, Skype calls etc, but that’s another issue.

Back to Kinect, the other issue is the use of Kinect for advertising, I’ve seen the articles about how the new Xbox One is made with advertising in mind and how Kinect is core to that, well, if I’m spending upwards of £1000 on an Xbox One on launch day, maybe I don’t want it sat there watching what brand of Cola I drink and then hitting me with “New Mango Coke” ads every 2 seconds.

I think if MS genuinely understand the privacy concerns that a mandatory Kinect bring, yet remain convinced that the benefits of the technology are worth it, then why not show that faith in their system by allowing customers to choose for themselves, all it takes is a couple of dash settings:

            1). Kinect is: On/Off.

2). Allow data usage for advertising purposes: Yes/No

            3). Display dashboard ads: Yes/No.

We keep hearing mysterious rumours that Kinect can be “turned off” or “paused”, but they need to come out and explain this in simple yet detailed terms, because right now they can announce all the other great features they want, such as this new direction on indies and homebrew development, it doesn’t remove the concerns some have over privacy.

          • Jordan Vasquez

It can be turned off…But then the problem is, why pay for something you won’t be using at all?

        • Morris ヅ

          Dam right

  • Morris ヅ

why so much hate were ever you go on a xbox related topic jheeze , i would like to say to you MN and microsoft good job and 1 more thing at gamescom please alow free to play games be free with out gold and on 360 aswell it defeats the purpose of free to play.

    • Chris Grub

While I agree, I’m very skeptical. MS marketing team is very sneaky with their wording leading to mistrust among consumers. The recent Games for Gold announcement was a great example of that. Many got confused over what game actually would launch. The Christmas sales are another good example.

I like MS products for the most part but the marketing team is very misleading. Consumers are catching on, and when announcements such as this one arrive many take it with a grain of salt.

      • Morris ヅ

yh they need to sort that info marketing team out , i would fire them and hire some new people that does the job right

      • Jordan Vasquez

Well if there’s anyone to fire from Microsoft, Steve Ballmer is it.

EDIT: Sorry wrong person I am replying too haha.

        • Chris Grub

It’s okay – I think we can all agree there.

      • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

they never said halo was going to be the first release, neither assassin creed 2. I was disapointed with first free game, but i never though it was misleading. You are confusing expectation and actual fact

        • franubisfur

The issue is that both the official XboxSupport via Twitter and the OXM stated they were.

    • Silent_Killer01

Agree, it really hurts the developer when they can only make money on Gold members instead of all players. (ps4 has it)

      • Morris ヅ

thats what i dont get does microsoft and sony get any money at all when free 2 play games on there plat? if they do then microsoft should alow silver members to play to and giv them the stupid adverts lol

        • usrev

every Microsoft point sale has a portion go to sony or microsoft so yes.

buy a $15 arcade game and MS probably gets $2 out of it. free to play games would be the same, except instead of getting the money on the download they would get it if you buy something for that game. so basically, the same as dlc, MS probably makes about $2 per dlc.

the reason consoles can sell at a loss is because everything for them, every game, dlc, anything, gives a small % of the money to the platform holder.

lets say you make a retail game, you have to give about $6 per sale to MS. so if your game sells 1million copies, MS gets $6million out of it. but then you make some DLC, lets say 400,000 people buy your $10 dlc. I’d guess MS gets $1 for every 10 spent, so $400,000 goes into the MS coffers.

also worth noting that this is why free dlc is so rare, MS doesn’t like free dlc because they don’t make anything from it. Gears of war 2 and 3 map packs were supposed to be free, for example.

          • http://matejgottwald.wordpress.com/ Matěj Gottwald

But is it wrong? The platform holder must run its servers, maintain them, support them… It’s the same story with free to play. So why should they do it for free?
If you buy a TV, you must pay for electricity. Without it there is no TV. And I think the same analogy can be applied to Xbox Live as well.

          • Morris ヅ

yes but free to play is ‘FREE’ so you shouldnt have to pay to play a free game its that simple

          • Morris ヅ

true but they should speak to devs and pubs to try make stuff cheaper on there plat if you think about it the cheaper it is the more money you make but i understand what your saying tho

    • Jordan Vasquez

Yes I agree that free to play games shouldn’t require Gold, but Microsoft probably will make it a requirement. After all, they make you pay to watch Netflix and Hulu, which you’ve paid for already, on your console…

And I think a good amount of the hate is much deserved. Microsoft did this to themselves quite honestly. Its this hate that is forcing Microsoft into making these changes, so don’t be bothered by the hate, unless of course if it is unwarranted…

      • Morris ヅ

at 1st its cool but now the world is ‘changing’ as they say they should let siver members have all free stuff for free and streaming for silvers ect , plus stuff like mobile games coming to console and that why the f##ck is it so much more i would understand if we got alot of content to justify it but dame if its the same game then be same price as it is in app store or google play but if we get like exclusive content because its on our plat then thats fair to raise price abit they just need to sort all that out a digital games to make them cheaper make more sales…

        • Jordan Vasquez

Yeah I hear you man, but unfortunately its not going to happen. Publishers and retailers have way too much say when it comes to video game prices…

          • Morris ヅ

yes thats true but digital aint nothing to do with retail it should be up to Devs/Pubs and the Platform and if i was microsoft i would be have steam like sale more then steam lol to make going digital is cheaper and quicker plus let us pre order digitally as well.

P.S Major let your bosses know on these ideas and if you use them i expect some cash ;) lol

          • Jordan Vasquez

A lot of people buy games from retailers still. Microsoft and publishers wouldn’t be able to undercut retailers, as they would just say that they aren’t selling their game.

Microsoft and the publishers depend more on retailers than retailers depend on them.

Microsoft and publishers wouldn’t be able to set their own prices unless they became download only like Steam.

          • Morris ヅ

hmmm true but i reckon they could sell it cheaper then shops

          • Jason Voorhees

They probably could do more and more temporary deals to sway customers into going digital. Having the sharing benefits and cloud login system has already swayed me to go digital as I’ll be able to play my games on every Xbox One from my friends that way.
I agree with both of you. F2P games should be allowed for Silver members as should basic multiplayer be free.
Apps with additional subscriptions should also not be behind the Gold paywal.
Gold subscriptions should be about additional features and games.

          • Morris ヅ

plus the instant switching as well is cool i would go digital if we get digital pre order bonuses, the gold sub needs to be like or more than PS+ thats the only thing i like about PS+ for being a payed member you get very cool stuff

      • Jason Voorhees

Yes, some of the criticism is well deserved, but the hating like some do isn’t, especially with insults against the community that disagree and against Major Nelson. I’m glad that there are people like you that can prove otherwise and make a good discussion with constructive criticism.

  • Machaira

    Nope, not consoles.

  • Joseph Statham

Will an XNA membership be required to debug on an Xbox One?

    • Jason Voorhees

It will very likely be an XNA like App Store membership, yes. That will unlock your Xbox One for pre-published development content.

  • LarZen

This is great news and a good path for the Xbox brand. Great times ahead for everyone who likes games!

  • The Yankee

First and for most that’s great news. Second, It’s getting really old hearing all these cry babies about the price and what Microsoft shold do for “me” from a free year of live to a free headset. WTH are you guys smoking? Like Microsoft owes you guys anything…last I check buying a 360..Xbox one…ps3 or ps4 is a choice not forced upon anyone. If you don’t like what ANY company is doing don’t support them period!!! Stop the whiny pitty party already…oh and btw IM A GAMER not a fanboy…I already reserved and paid for BOTH systems.

    • Morris ヅ

      Amen

    • usrev

if the competition is offering something better it’s the job of the other company to compete. the reason XBL is a joke is because PSN+ offers so much more. it has nothing to do with “entitlement” beyond simple competition between corporations.

      • roozbeh

well thats your opinion. ps plus does offer more games but the security is a joke

        • usrev

false but ok for fanboyism right

          • roozbeh

well im a guy who bought the freaking ps3 at launch and kept against all the problems until the freaking black out. yeah now that i think of i was a hardcore ps fanboy.
ps plus is great and all but the security is a freaking joke. the servers are always laggy. and me being a guy who likes online shooters must say,psn sucks a$$ in comparison to xbl.
free games are just not worth it for me.

      • http://matejgottwald.wordpress.com/ Matěj Gottwald

What I don’t like about PS+ is that the games you ger for “free” are not yours, only “rented” for as long as you have PS+ subscription. It is also the reason I prefer Xbox Live Gold – it is a little more expensive, you usually don’t get “free” games (I don’t think the current “Games with Gold” will last any longer), only discounts, but what you buy is yours. No matter you change or cancel your subscription or go offline.

        • usrev

what you buys is yours on psn…. your argument is ridiculous. PSN+ is the same thing as xbox live except they throw free games at you like candy that you can use as long as you are PSN+. if I buy a game on psn it’s mine, even if it was on sale for psn+.

      • Karl Cramer

Try PSN network speeds. Now imagine them handling all those PS4s.

        • usrev

I’ll take they have upgraded the network infrastructure for 500 alex.

      • InfernoShade

When I read posts like this it shows not only a lack of business sense but simply a lack of common sense.

The are inherently in competition. That does not mean they have to offer the same things. Does DnD off the same exact thing as Starbucks? No. You don’t understand business.

        • usrev

wrong. first off you completely show you have no idea what you are talking about. starbucks offers coffee and breakfast snacks, guess what DnD offers. the same thing or similar. that’s the point.

the difference between XBL and PSN+ is like if there were 2 groccery stores, one (the xbox store) had more registers but much less products (exclusives) you also had to pay a membership fee.

the psn store had less registers but has many more products, and you can sign up for a membership plan in which they would randomly give you a free product every week. the membership is optional. you also get discounts on some items

the stores are next to each other.

with a straight face, no one could tell me they would pick the Xbox grocery store.

          • InfernoShade

Umm, wow I know exactly what I’m talking about. :)

I’m fine with you having a preference. If you like something better that’s ok with me. But you missed the point.

To be in competition businesses don’t have to give consumers the exact offers or deals. If DnD gives you a free coffee with your sandwich, Starbucks doesn’t have to do that. They can give you a discounted pastry with a coffee. See it’s different. Some people like the discount others the free offer, or even deep some people may like that one offers a desert. See? Different, but definitely in competition. Please open your mind. :)

    • James Jiao

Absolutely agree with you. Typical example of a first-world problem…

  • ZappyKins

This is so awesome news! I don’t know how many people it will effect, but nice to know we can use a resource we already have in a new way. Now if we could skip the extra Kinect 2.0 Development Kit for Windows, and use the one for our Xbox One, that would be doubly great.

  • Blank3k

Great news & A good move.

I can’t think of any more features/policy’s the competition has which the Xbox One hasn’t one upped now. (With the exception of local resources)

    • usrev

for policy i’d say PSN+. the free titles are still going to be pretty good.

but other than that this gen seems like it will be a fight for who has the best games.

      • Nick Peck

I will admit that psn+ is worth the moeny, even if you don’t get to keep the games (the free ones). However, I’m very excited for the XBL changes that we know about and can’t wait to see what else they have to tell us.

From what it sounds like, XBL for the XBO has a lot of great changes in store for us. Just tell us now, I hate waiting :D

  • kftgr

Every XB1 will function as a development kit? That’s awesome. As XNA is gone, what’s the preferred language and environment?

    • Nick Peck

I’m sure they will talk about it when they announce it at gamescom. I’m not big into indies but I’d like to know this info as well just for the heck of it. It’s a great idea and will help save everyone a lot of money software and hardware wise.

    • NBA Kirkland

Programming with just a controller is rough. But add a chat pad and you are good to go!

    • boe2

For the hobbyists there is Unity as the XNA replacement. They have announced Xbox One support, fully endorsed by Microsoft.

      • kftgr

        Isn’t Unity $1,500?

        • boe2

It has a free edition as well. I don’t know if they plan to include X1 support in the free edition, but Microsoft better takes care of this.

  • ElektroDragon

Hmm… now that the evil EA overlord is gone, things seem to be going back to the visionary Allard/Bach days. XNA/Indie games was very restrictive and not well managed. If this can be improved upon like this article suggests, then WOW, sign me up!

  • usrev

glad MS came to their senses on this issue. slowly but surely it looks like this gen is going to be a fight about games… if MS gets some good exclusives it should be a good fight.

    • Karl Cramer

You might’ve missed the news. There’s this little title coming out called Titanfall. Also, see Dead Rising 3, Forza, LocoCycle, Killer Instinct, Halo 5, etc.

    • Nick Peck

They have been changing their XBL policies since early this year and this was part of the plan, but they didn’t get to it until now. A lot of changes which is good. MS has many great exclusives with a bunch of new ones on the way, the best part being they all look fantastic!

    • boe2

Every gen is about games. It’s the fanboys that try to make it about specs :)

  • saxwriter1

Why is everyone reacting like this just happened. They already mentioned this was coming back at E3. Oh I forgot, people on the net live in their own bubbles when it comes to info. if its not spoon fed to you, its news when it is.

    • Sledg

I think people get excited for news of new news coming :) And yes, this was mentioned at E3 but once people got “DRM” in their head they didn’t hear anything else. Not to mention most “news” sites couldn’t get past that thought either.

I’m sure this has been in the works for a while because this is something you can’t code overnight. It’ll be interesting to hear more details about this at GamesCon. I hope they have some streaming going on so we can watch

      • saxwriter1

        indeed

    • Adam

They backflipped for E3 – this is another backflip, as this one confirms you can self-publish, as the E3 annoucnement was about free dev kits etc, but no self-publishing.
MS are still last in indy publishing, but not as far behind as they were before this.
edit: and apparently being able to use the Xbox One to develop is new, but also pointless – if you don’t have a PC, then you shouldn’t bother.

      • Nick Peck

Man, no clue but enjoy :D

    • Jason Voorhees

Microsoft already hinted at these features coming for some time, correct. Yet MS was NOT clear about them. That is why people consider this a 180, when it really isn’t, the system just wasn’t finalized. Bad communication is what isn’t doing MS any favors.

  • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

finally some farting game on xbox one

  • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

if you worry that much about a game enhancement device, i strongly suggest to not use the internet, not use any phone that have a GPS and / or camera and avoid place that have security camera. And don’t play watch dog as it can turn you even more paranoid.

  • tenbob1972

hopefully now Phil Fish will bring Fez 2 to xbox .lol

    • mightywombat

He’ll probably complain about the publishing fee and act as if he was caught completely off guard, and then find some way to screw over those who bought his game.

      • Jason Voorhees

Well, if he can’t afford $99 (the current dev center price per year) after Fez, then I don’t know what else to say…
To be fair though in his defense, he said he will now finally patch the original Fez.

    • roozbeh

he will probably say its retroactive. Jonathan blow might say its completely fake

      • Jason Voorhees

        I wouldn’t be surprised…

        • roozbeh

he actually isnt fully convinced yet. on his twitter page he says now that microsofts contracts suck.
          no pleasing these people

          • Bennijin

            Jonathan blows.

          • roozbeh

            lol

          • Nick Peck

I think so, didn’t like his game either and after seeing his new game I have zero interest in it so I could care less. I have read a lot about him and that dude is an oddball, but to each his own lol.

I’m sure it will find it’s way over as the almighty dollar will eventually get the better of him.

          • Bennijin

I’ll reserve judgement until it’s out but The Witness looks like a bad Myst.

          • Death Dealer

Same BS from Brian Provinciano. Bunch of hypocrites in bed with Sony and I hope their next titles bomb hard.

          • roozbeh

            brian provinciano. lol
like he ever made a good game

          • roozbeh

yeah like brian provinciano was really succesful.
            /sarcasm/
hopefully more things like minecraft and state of decay will be around

    • tenbob1972

since my last post Phil Fish has said there not going to be Fez 2 as he is getting out of the games business.

  • MrRadiolips

Old news with twisted explanation. So its new again.

    • Jason Voorhees

      :)

  • Mangel

    • Jason Voorhees

You hav to forgive me, my Spanish isn’t up to snuff. Yes, you are correct, every Xbox One will be able to become a dev kit. They will not have the additional RAM that the full on development kits have, but they will share the same functionality and give access to the dev center environment and app store.

      • Mangel

i understand you (my writing is the problem), thanks for the info ;) .

  • roozbeh

julie has a positive effect yet again.
take that mr lanning. who should be fired now?

    • Jason Voorhees

To be fair, this was in the planning for quite some time, but I’m grateful it is now finally being announced with a clear press release.

      • roozbeh

you know i like xbox but this was about goddamn time. people complaining terribly about it. but now that its happened i would like to see what trolls will complain about now

        • Jason Voorhees

You can’t please everyone, somewhere, someone will complain.

          • roozbeh

            exactly

          • Nick Peck

            Exactly :)

    • Nick Peck

Lanning hasn’t been relevant since forever. I personally never cared for him or his games but that’s just me :D

      • roozbeh

        same here

  • Dean Rosolen

Is this also going to be backported to XBLA on 360? I know of at least one development studio that has had massive issues with publishing requirements on XBLA. If self publishing is going to be on XBLA on 360 as well, it’d be good news for that developer as they don’t have to deal with a publisher that can go bankrupt at any time.

    • Jason Voorhees

It could, but the Xbox 360 isn’t adapted to the WinRT environment at the moment. It would actually need quite a radical OS change to implement, but in theory it could be done. If enough people demand it (they have almost 80 million Xbox 360s sold), I’m sure MS would try and implement it to replace XNA (and remove some other broken systems, like rep, to make room for it ;) ).

      • Dean Rosolen

I was more referring to the policy around self publishing on XBLA for 360 rather than the dev kit stuff in the Xbox One.

        • Death Dealer

Ah OK, it doesn’t change his answer much I guess. It could if MS were to enable this as a replacement for XNA. Don’t expect this anytime soon around the launch of the Xbox One though.

      • ElektroDragon

What does WinRT have to do with this? The Xbox One runs on x86 not ARM!

        • Death Dealer

You’re making the same mistake WinRT is not Windows RT. MS really screwed up on the naming there.

          • ElektroDragon

Holy cow, are you kidding me here? If someone like me who has been an IT Specialist on Windows since 1999 can’t get it right, what hope does anyone else have?

          • Death Dealer

            Good Sir, I sh*t U not.

  • roozbeh

ah get outta here. you ps fanboys are getting scared arent you?
day by day xbox is getting better and you folk feel threatened

  • MagicMarker007

This is awesome news. Indie games are the best, I hope to now see “The Witness” be released for the Xbox One

    • Bennijin

I imagine it will be, it’s only a timed exclusive. Saying that (and veering a little off topic) it seems more developers in general are releasing on either PS and Xbox, Xbox and PC, all three, PS only or PC only. Not even through monetary incentives, they’re just not releasing games solely for Xbox.

Even some franchises that have been on both consoles (Ace Combat, Tekken, BlazBlue) have become PS exclusives with their latest incarnations. Meanwhile Xbox 360 exclusives this year begin and end at Fable Anniversary.

      What’s up with that?

      • roozbeh

        ryse?
        dead rising 3?
        forza 5?

        • Bennijin

360 exclusives. They’ve really dried up and have been since Alan Wake came out in 2010, while from console launch onwards we were showered with them.

I don’t want to see history repeat itself. Or indeed this trend just go straight into next gen with titles that could be multiplatform but aren’t.

          • Nick Peck

While I agree there weren’t many as of late, but I think they were saving a lot of them for the XBO which would make sense. There is still a ton of great software coming for the 360 with a few exclusives thrown in.

It’s hard to have several of the same games in development for two systems when the focus is going to be shifting to the next gen console. I think they played it smart knowing that the 3rd party line up has been very strong this year.

          • roozbeh

yeah i agree there is a lack of exclusive for the 360 this year.
hopefully the xbox one will be different

  • http://matejgottwald.wordpress.com/ Matěj Gottwald

    Second that!

  • beardyman3218

I am so happy right now, this is the last bit of news i needed to cement my pre-order (i pre-orderd day one), the package is now complete. Happy gaming everyone.

  • beardyman3218

Is gamescom gonna be streamed live on xbox? I really want to watch it and not just read about it.

    • Morris ヅ

it should be its bigger then e3 so prob will

  • Mark Thompson

So are these the same Microsoft privacy policies that covered Hotmail, Skydrive and Skype ? And yet now we are reading about how Microsoft are handing data over to the NSA / FBI, heck the Xbox One comes with Skype and it seems the NSA have the ability to listen in on Skype calls, whats to say they can’t do that with Skype on Xbox One.

I also don’t buy into this argument that by simply forcing Kinect into peoples homes it will somehow open up the door and developers are going to deliver us a wonderful new world of Kinect gameplay. Why does it have to be forced on us in this way ? If the technology is as good as Microsoft claim, and if the developers actually make something good for once with it, then people will want to use it anyway. Forcing it down our throats is not the way, taking customers choice away is not the way. The way to do it is to make something so good that every gamer out this is rushing to plug in their Kinect in and play this title, something Microsoft and game developers failed to do with Kinect 1 imho.

    • Wayne Sebbens

More or less, they are the same (or similar) policies. Basically, Microsoft (just like any other company that provides communication services, including Sony) are sometimes obligated to comply with lawful demands from governments to turn over content for specific accounts, pursuant to a search warrant or court order. But that search warrant or court order is required, and they provide only the information demanded rather than providing free access to the entire account.
Read here http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_on_the_issues/archive/2013/07/16/responding-to-government-legal-demands-for-customer-data.aspx for information about that.

Regarding Kinect, the trouble is, it’s not simply a case of “make something good”. The issue is getting devs to want to develop for it, and if Kinect (or any other accessory) is optional (as it is on the 360), most devs won’t want to take the risk of spending time and resources on something that either won’t sell very well (because they’ve restricted the game to only those who own the accessory), or that most people won’t use (because the majority of their userbase don’t actually own that accessory). There are two really good examples from the N64 actually – the memory card (which a lot of games never made use of, because not many people actually bought them), and the RAM expansion pack (most of the games that actually used it could not be played without it).
Bundling the Kinect and requiring it to be connected to the Xbox One removes the uncertainty of whether or not users have it. The PS4 neither bundles nor requires the PSEye, and you will see that a lot of games will disregard it entirely for simply not being able to know whether it’s worth the risk of gamers actually owning it.

  • David Dodd

great news for all think it clears up issues stated at E3 pleased to see that MS are becoming clearer with previous statements and expanding on them. Looking forward to Gamescom next month ….. roll on November …… whats the date ? :)

    • http://www.majornelson.com Major Nelson

      November ____ ;)

      • Death Dealer

1st week…is my guess before the new CoD.

        • Nick Peck

If I had to guess, I’m thinking the same thing. Fingers are crossed for sure.

        • Morris ヅ

same day as cod with a bundle mayb??

      • Nick Peck

So Larry, there is usually number after the name of the month :D I can wait for you to update it, no biggie.

        I can’t wait any longer!!

        • roozbeh

          ‘I can’t wait any longer’
          thats me alright.

      • ungeheier

Does ____ mean that its a 1 that fell over? Maybe two 1′s? Nov 11th? Veterans day?

  • Lija del Siete

    Kinnect-less!!

    • Jason Voorhees

I think, for an aspiring developer, having the Kinect there is one of the best things MS is doing.

      • Death Dealer

Go for it. That would probably be a hit around operating theatres, where you can’t touch anything.

      • Alex Tran

        Surgeon Simulator: Kinect Edition

        • Jason Voorhees

:D. I showed that to a colleague once (I got it on Steam) and he was appalled.

          Kinectrauma Center

      • roozbeh

creative vision for a medical doctor. nice idea.

      • Mr XBob

Add to this the news that Xbox One now lets you self-publish, it means Xbox One will be able to give us all the cool stuff PC users have been doing with Kinect 1 (but now even better with Kinect 2 and on our consoles)

    • David Dodd

its part of the machine !

    • baconcheeswhiz89

      point it at a wall.

      • roozbeh

and also plug the mic on it.

  • Karl Cramer

I’m cool with all of that except allowing self-published titles having access to achievements. That’s going to open the ecosystem up to abuse and make Gamerscore meaningless. Yes, negative commenters, there’s still people that care about achievements. Lots of them. This could be thing that kills the golden goose.

    • Jason Voorhees

Definitely, but I’m fairly sure that there will extra certification for indies that want to implement achievements. It’s the same way on Windows Phone right now.

      • Nick Peck

^This. Trust me they thought of everything that can happen and have a system in place to keep something like that from happening. I don’t really buy indie games anyways but we will see.

    • boe2

Self publishing does not mean that there is no curation. Games still have to be certified and approved by Microsoft.

  • Bennijin

If it’s anything like the XBLIG channel… meh.

  • Kieran

Gears of war 3 (from early 2011) should be the next free game for everyone to try out. You can get it on Amazon now for 12 Euros

Its still a popular game 15th on the x box live charts.

    • roozbeh

i would love that. but i highly doubt it

      • Kieran

I don’t see why not. Its only 14 Dollars in the United States for Gears 3. Assassins Creed 2 was about the same price.

Lot of people have never tried gears this would be a good way to boost the franchise.

    • Bennijin

Looking at the top LIVE titles it’s Judgement that should be free!

      • Kieran

Not going to happen since its newest gears title. It wasn’t as successful as gears 3 but that was down to the lack of content.

4 Maps for traditional multiplayer what a joke.

        • Bennijin

Oh I know it won’t, I’m just saying if any Gears game should be on Games with Gold it’s that one.

They could probably make a bit on DLC too.

    • Death Dealer

I bet MS could release some of their own more recent titles in the Games for Gold program.

    • WARLORD

Ya gears 3 would be cool but if thy do gears thy will probably do gears 1 or 2.

      • Kieran

Gears 1 is too old and gears 2 nay. Gears 3 is cheap enough now to offer it for free.

        • Machaira

“too old”?!? So a game stops being fun after some period of time? Seriously?!? :

  • Colin Powers

Great news. This was one of the things putting me off the console a bit. Hopefully, it’s not too late to win back any upset indie game devs.

    • Nick Peck

Money talks. They can say what they want but when they can make more $$ they will sell it everywhere that they can :D

I’m sure things will be fine.

    • Jason Voorhees

Indeed, you should see some of the hypocritical indies out there. Releasing one game with success and thinking their the big shots. Brian Provinciano takes the cake. NONE of the indie developers have the details on this program, yet some of them are already talking sh*t. Unbelievable.

      • roozbeh

man i hate that guy. his game was complete and utter sh!t.
        over hyped b@stard

  • baconcheeswhiz89

pretty awesome, too bad idk how to make games :(

    • Jan Václavík

Dont worry, neither do most indie devs…

      • Jason Voorhees

Instant rimshot! Man, I wish I could add sounds to this post.

        • Nick Peck

          ba-da-bum… :p

          • ungeheier

            pissshhhh

  • Quanicus

With all these changes, can we trust what we hear at GamesCom? I like the reversal but it seems Microsoft tells us their initial plan, and flip flops depending on what the competitor is doing (or not doing).

    • roozbeh

actually i consider this a good change, its not like all companies can swallow their pride and change their policies in a way that people will like.

    • Kieran

Microsoft is only changing policies. The xb1 will work the same way it always has.

For me the price is only thing stopping me from preordering the XB1 100 Euros extra i not sure i want to spend it. I can just buy a PS4 with two extra games for the same price as an XB1

  • Preston Christman

Now the Hard questions that I may have to wait for Gamecom for:

Sort of Limitations? Windows 8 Software Only? How much Ram do the Developers get to play with?

    • Sledg

Yes, we’ll have to wait for GamesCon. I hope they share enough info that doesn’t leave open questions. And hopefully they place the info on some web page with a rolling FAQ on there.

    • Jason Voorhees

It will be Windows Runtime (not Windows RT, like many are stating incorrectly on NeoGAF or VGChartz as that is Windows on ARM), you can bet on it, but that gives a programmer nearly limitless possibilities to use any native code.
Then it all falls to whether it’s for the app OS (3GB) or the games OS (5GB). but even if it were only for the app OS, it would be more than the WiiU or OUYA and a h*ll of a lot more than the Xbox 360, which already can produce spectacular games.
The Xbox One is going to be a nice all-round device.

      • HyperTallih

Windows Runtime is Windows RT. you mean Windows NT?

        • Jason Voorhees

NO, computer technician. WinRT is Windows Runtime. Windows RT is Windows on ARM. All Windows Operating Systems are based on the NT kernel.

        • boe2

Windows Runtime is the new replacement for the Win32 API that simplifies a lot of mundane tasks for developers. It’s managed code and a breeze to use in .NET.

Windows RT is the ARM version of windows 8.
