How time-of-flight sensing works in Xbox One’s Kinect

Good read if you want to learn more about the technology behind the new Kinect

Kinect, Xbox One By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • roozbeh, again

    Some impressive tech in their.
    Props bamji

  • fastharryDOTcom

Comparing the tech in a ONE Kinect to Sony’s “innovation” is like comparing a Satellite to an Instamatic,,,

    • ungeheier

      Snapmatic.

      • fastharryDOTcom

        220..221…whatever works

    • GmailIsDown

      Sony does not innovate.

      and what is an Instamatic?

      • tigertomspill

        . a brand name for a pocket-size, fixed-focus, snapshot camera.

      • fastharryDOTcom

google is your friend….of course, you could always wait to use the kinect 2.0 voice search…

  • Gazza!!!

Cyrus Bamji has one of the best names ever…

  • bko

Maybe instead of constantly telling us how amazing this thing is, you could show us a few games that actually use it. All I’ve seen is yet another dancing game and some needless CG trailer for yet another sports compilation. Feels like 2009 all over again.

    • evilfangs .

Fighter Within is a fighting game made by Ubisoft. You should search for videos on that.

Kinect Sports Rivals from what I’ve seen is basically Wii sports.

      Just Dance 2014.
      Fantasia.

Those are the only Kinect games I’ve heard off.

      • bko

I watched the Fighter Within demo and it looked like another case of gestures crammed atop a so-so fighting game that doesn’t need them (and didn’t seem to register them terribly well) than something really revelatory. I guess that’s what I specifically want — a game that feels like an experience I couldn’t have without this thing. I don’t necessarily mind that it’s bundled with the system, but if we’re all on the hook for buying it, I just want to understand why I should be excited by it. So far it’s the same old potential, same old games and same old one-day-you’ll-see talk, and I’m getting serious Deja Vu after getting suckered by the first Kinect three years ago.

        • roozbeh, again

D4 and prohect spark are probably the best examples right now

      • arrow2010

Don’t forget that many other games will integrate Kinect commands to enhance the experience. That doesn’t make them “kinect games”.

        • bko

That’s fine, but nothing a headset shouldn’t be able to accomplish (and accomplish much better than barking a command across the room). I understand lots of games will use Kinect — what I’m looking for are games that cannot exist without it.

        • evilfangs .

Yeah true, but I’m doing actually that in GTA online. ( shouting into my turtle beach headset to make the cashier give me the money faster )

You don’t need the Kinect for in game commands. Any headset will do.

    • roozbeh, again

D4, BF4, fifa 14, project spark and a few others

  • Ivanx360xpira

great tech behind this sensor. Kudos to people involved in such development.

By the way, Major, I have a question about voice control. “Xbox on” will not work initially in some region, this includes Brasil, where I live. If I change the language of my console to english (don’t know if it is gonna be possible, but it´s on 360) this voice command will work?

    Thanks!

    • GmailIsDown

you will probably get your console and gametag perma banned, as a number of people have already been banned for accessing out of region content last week, despite that Xbox Support explicitly said it was ok.

      • roozbeh, again

        No, he won’t.

        • GmailIsDown

have you listened the podcast of Stallion83 yet?

      • Ivanx360xpira

are nuts? now change the language of the console is illegal?????not talking about account change, but change console settings!!

        • roozbeh, again

If and this is a big if, your billing info is authentic you are okay. If not you best fix it now

          • Ivanx360xpira

it´s authentic I traveled us to work sometimes, where I bought my console btw. Thanks!

        • GmailIsDown

they can ban you for “Utilizing fraudulent methods in order to obtain region-specific marketplace content or circumvent regional pricing”, “Illegitimate acquisition of marketplace content”, etc. those are exact reasons posted by XBLPET on the offical forum

          http://forums xbox com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/2366.aspx

  • Xboner2013

This just need to give it up. It’s so great they dropped it for their Kinect only title Ryse. Sorry MS, you need to focus on things that actually have a useful purpose.

    • Sledg

You don’t like it but others do. Do you feel better now?

      • Xboner2013

There is nothing for me to feel either way… I get a kick at looking at this epic disaster though.

        • Guest

Funny you are upvoting yourself with your own alternate accounts that you admitted to some time ago. Pretty pathetic!

          • Xboner2013

Funny I don’t have another account… pretty pathetic that you just make stuff up because you don’t like the Truth. Good luck.

        • arrow2010

I guess people don’t want to hear hard truths. I think the bigger question is – where is Microsoft dominating in consumer mindshare?

          Beuller? Beuller? Beuller?

    • MaximMillion

Project Spark reportedly allows Kinect to motion capture animations you can implement into your own game designs.

That is one awesome feature I intend to use. A LOT.

  • HGamer

Major, can we talk about games?

Like, MIghty No. 9 (from Rockman creator) and Shantae Half Genie Hero (from Wayforward) confirmed for X1.

    • Death Dealer

Yeah, I pledged to both of those and I can’t wait. But it’ll be a while before we see them though.

  • GmailIsDown

i was so excited about the new Kinect until i read the kotaku article http://kotakucom/why-im-a-little-bit-worried-about-kinect-1381738496

it does not seem to offer any significant improvement over Kinect 1.0

  • infinitecognizance

Do people really care about this thing? It’s the one thing that has me really annoyed about Xbox One (XBone is easier sorry, but I won’t do it) I can change channels and turn my tv on by myself. I have yet to see it make any difference in a game that betters the experience. When I bought my latest 360 it came with a Kinect and I soon realized how useless it really was for gaming. I tried selling it to a pawn shop and I didn’t even get an offer for it. Not even $5. These things were still $150 new and I couldn’t get $5 for it? Let people decide if they want one or not. I’m not getting ripped off again.

    • roozbeh, again

I could give you a few examples but if you cared you probably knew them by now

    • GmailIsDown

i’ll take a Kinect from you for $5 at any day.

Kinect does well for dancing and fitness games, but it is pretty much useless for anything else. i was hoping the Kinect 2.0 would be different.

      • infinitecognizance

I sold it on craigslist for 20 bucks lol That was all I could get. I agree it is good for those girly/kid games, but I just don’t want it. It’s like I go to a bar to get a beer, but the only way I can get it is to pay 10x the price because it comes with a mandatory pack of cigarettes.

    • Bush O Connor

same here, i dont want to pay for something i wont use. already bought the first Kinect and it never got used after the first day.

my remote and a joypad is all i need.

    • MaximMillion

Who goes to a pawn shop anymore?! LOL@FAIL!

  • Dennis Crosby

Honestly I was like most of you guys .the Kinect didn’t appeal to me at all until about a week ago we the announced the fitness app.that app is worth the extra hundred it self . You pretty much have a at home personal trainer for a year free. Just play a couple rounds of your favorite rage inducing game and you’ll be ready for a work out

    • Bush O Connor

you could use that $100 and get a 3 month membership to a gym or even buy a bike and cycle.
either way it should be an optional purchase choice.

      • Dennis Crosby

Yea but now that everyone will have a Kinect more devs will make games and other ways to use it

      • MaximMillion

Going to the gym requires travel, and if you want a trainer with that, it also requires an obnoxious and often arrogant individual yelling at you. Gyms also smell bad.

That all goes away if you have your own home workout routine, where you can exercise according to your own pace.

  • MrRadiolips

The kinect is nonsense in my opinion. Why not just have voice controls with a headset or intergrated mic on controller and keep the camera seperate for the people who want to use the XB one as a fitness and childrens gaming device.

    • Death Dealer

That’s the problem right there. If MS were to do that, that processing would fall entirely on the CPU (Kinect on the Xbox One has an additional processing system for such things) again like it does on the Xbox 360 and make games less great overall. I don’t think that would be a smart move with the competition having a theoretical performance advantage. Cutting the price (to the level of the PS4 or slightly higher) and still including the Kinect however, would. I fully expect pricedrops to occur next year because of lower than expected sales. We are in a recession and €500 is not for everyone anymore.
IF (it’s a BIG if) MS ever does drop the Kinect from a newer SKU, it won’t be soon, but they would be able to vastly undercut the PS4′s price if they did and turn the tide around.
However MS will (and I fully agree with this road) give developers the chance for quite a while to come up with good things on the Kinect before pulling such a stunt. If Kinect doesn’t pay off within a year and half or so, I guess we’ll start to see Kinect-less bundles. Before that? NOT a chance.

      • Guest

True. People can pathetically whine and whine all they want on here. It’s not going to happen soon if ever.

      • Xboner2013

DD, voice recognition does not required large processing which is why it’s put into phones and has been for years. Games existed on the Xbox 360 using voice recognition before the Kinect even existed.

      • MrRadiolips

Only the motion would require the processing. I have a family member who use voice controlls on her PC because she is blind and she has wireless headset.

    • Xboner2013

It’s not your opinion, it’s a fact, if you are talking about Kinect as the primary input device for anything other than a dance game, fitness apps, web cam clone game, kids game, etc. (in general).

The voice control only needs a cheap mic, as other games had it integrated before there was anything even called a Kinect.

      • Guest

        Upvoting yourself again? Poor pauper.

        • Xboner2013

Haven’t touched my votes… wishful thinking on your part.

          I know, ignore the Truth.

          • Guest

Comp Tech, Computer Technician, Volitar Prime, Arron Bansloten. They’re all you, we’ve seen you admit to it some time ago. Funny pathetic little troll.

          • Xboner2013

Ignore the Truth…. not my problem. When the Truth is too much to bare…human behavior is to attack the messenger… ole well, again not my problem.

          • Guest

Hahaha, poor pauper you are. Nothing but a no-life troll.

          • Xboner2013

Seems like you are trolling me… but you don’t want the Truth so just ignore this as well.

          • Guest

Your truth is only you trolling little head.

          • Xboner2013

Nice troll post. Thanks for proving my point. :)

        • infinitecognizance

          That was me “pauper”.

          • infinitecognizance

I guess all of these people must think I’m a “pauper” This blog is a joke, but at least it’s more entertaining than a kinect. “Pauper” uhhh…wut

          • Xboner2013

Some people don’t want the Truth… they have no problem being lied too. Not our problem though.

          • MaximMillion

If it’s not your problem, why do you seem so upset by the whole idea? You’re making it your problem with your insane ranting.

I’d say you’re exactly one of those who ‘don’t want the truth’ by the way you’re carrying on. You should be ashamed of yourself.

How old are you, may I ask?

      • MaximMillion

You’re a pimply loser with no life who masturbates over dodgey Internet porn too much. Is this a fact too, or just one’s opinion?

    • roozbeh, again

Motion mechanics are useful in some games.
The best example probably is D4 if you’re into those games.
Personally I like the fitness stuff because I’ve become a fat mess but MS have to sell the kinect a whole lot better if they want it to lift off

  • tigertomspill

I think Kinect is a way for Microsoft to expand their audience and most likely not going to applies to most of the hardcore gamer’s unless the developers can show features that are worth using. It will be a wait and see but for me that liked kinect last generation is very excited for the higher fidelity and better integration to the whole system.

  • infinitecognizance

    Kinect only appeals to paupers.

    • Guest

Like yourself. Because you can’t afford it.

      • infinitecognizance

I’m about to break you off something real proper you dirty pauper.

    • infinitecognizance

      Downvoting again? Poor pathetic paupers.

  • Death Dealer

Time to lock the comments down Major.

    • infinitecognizance

Aww isn’t that cute? Major’s little pauper. Don’t be a party pauper.

    • Guest

But you’re the death dealer lol What are you scared of? I’m just trying to amuse myself buddy.

      • Death Dealer

I’m not scared of anything. Cr*p like you and spammer Xboner2013 (or his many other aliases) are posting, should not be tolerated anymore.
You people show ZERO respect to MS, Major Nelson or the Xbox One and disrespect other commenters on here just as much.

        • Xboner2013

Of course… ignore the Truth, you fear the Truth. Instead of addressing anything I have ever written, you attack me in the hopes that the Truth disappears.

Good luck. I only post under one ID, sorry buddy.

          • Death Dealer

I see no truth in any of your mumblings on here and couldn’t care less wether you post with alt-nicks.
But I as well remember a conversation where you said you were the people Guest named. Trolling with “the entire internet” through proxies and if your were to be banned Major would need to ban the entire internet as well.

          • Xboner2013

Of course, you closed your eyes. Just like all the kids were doing in 2010 when I told them they would not get any real games for that thing…. if you like fitness stuff, kids stuff or dance stuff… sure it will work for those… 95%+ of all other games this device was DOA a long time ago.

Now you can believe that or you don’t, now if you don’t just post us a video of this awesome game using this thing and we can settle this one and for all.

          • MaximMillion

Actually that’s all your own opinion; and, by he looks of this thread, you’re trying really hard to enforce it through an awful lot of trolling.
I have two X360s – one with Kinect, one without. I don’t use the Kinect anymore, but it used to be great to keep in shape (Boxing – a fun way to keep fit). Now days my girlfriend’s kid sister uses it for Kinect Sports and Seasame St, but no one else uses it. I play games on my other 360, and there’s more than enough games to keep me entertained.
Point is, just because you don’t like it, there are others that do. Yours isn’t the only opinion out there. It’s arrogant to assume you’re completely right in your argument. Kinect actually made money, unlike some other Wii ripoff motion devices available…

    • infinitecognizance

Snitch..I’m sure he could figure it out. You need to get your priorities straight.

      • Death Dealer

Wow, a snitch. That’s the best thing you could come up with? YOU need to get your priorities straight. No company or passtime hobby is important enough to troll a corporate employee’s (that doesn’t deserve this) website 24/7. It’s like your lives are completely meaningless and you people have nowhere else to go.

        • infinitecognizance

Sorry OFFICER. My priorities are fine. I’ve just got nothing to do today. You’re the one butthurt over a website.

          • Death Dealer

That’s it isn’t it. YOU consider this just a website. Showing your disrespect towards its owner and the company he works for. Very sad!

          • infinitecognizance

Hahaha.I actually like Major. You’re the one who came in here trying to lay down the law. I’ve been disrespected by Microsoft over and over again. Im already invested in the 360 and I’ve been disrespected by MS since info on XBox one has been available.

          • Death Dealer

Really? In what way? Please enlighten us without BS?
If you’re truly dissatisfied with MS’s practices, show us the post you made on the Xbox Forums about it, where this belongs.

          • infinitecognizance

Smh..scroll down. I’m not going to type you a novel. Also, you’re doing the same thing I’ve been doing. I usually don’t spam and only sometimes do I troll.

          • Death Dealer

So because YOU bought an Xbox 360 with a Kinect and tried to pawn the Kinect off with little result is something an MS employee should pay for by having his blog trollled on? Entitled much? Not living in the real world?

          • infinitecognizance

No, it was a bundle and i sold Tiger Woods 13 shortly after. That’s not the point. My original point was I’m not going to spend $100 extra on something that I don’t want and will not be able to get rid of because everyone will have one already if they buy an xbo.

          • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

kid fight is over now ? we can get back on topic maybe now ?

          • MaximMillion

            This fool (@infinitecognizance:disqus) wasn’t offended by MS; it’s talking out it’s @$$.
It’s merely a $0n¥ crony trying to sway public opinion before what it sees as ‘voting day.’ It obviously has no life, we should pity the poor thing.

          • MaximMillion

It’s a good thing when obnoxious types are called out, or ‘policed.’ Because you then proceed to expose yourselves as the fools you are when you get offended and carry on ranting for waaaay too long.

  • roozbeh, again

    WHAT HAS THIS THREAD BECOME?

    • roozbeh, again

      ‘Christian Bale voice’

      WAR

    • infinitecognizance

It’s my fault. Sorry..no sleep and too much coffee.

    • Guest

      A PauperStation fantard venting place.

  • arrow2010

I cancelled my Day One pre-order because of the Kotaku review on Kinect. apparently it’s still garbage. The guy had to say “Xbox Home” 4 times.

    • Xboner2013

I actually think that can be fixed. The problem is they want to continue to somehow claim or hint that this will ever be used as a real game input device, which it is and will never be capable of doing for 95% of the games.

Voice commands can be done without a Kinect as all that is needed is a mic… so that is a problem a problem with a limitation of the Kinect or other mic… it’s just software that is not as good as it could or should be.

I have no idea why someone would want to use this with their cable… .heck I already want to through my remote out the window let alone another device in the middle.

      • arrow2010

It’s reason enough to cancel. My biggest reason to have pre-ordered in the first place was using voice command to navigate the interface, snap apps together and so on. Seeing that Kinect 2 is the same rubbish as Kinect 1 is a dealbreaker.

        • Xboner2013

I am not trying to encourage you or discourage you. My only point is there are some things that can corrected and some things that can never work.

Voice commands is mostly a software limitation, which can be improved over time, if that is enough for you not to buy the system I have no problem with that…. I have no plans to buy one.

Trust me, I have yet to figure out what they are trying to do which is probably why one guy resigned.

        • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

that seems a pretty bad reason to buy a console in the first place. So know what, you have a choice to buy a console that will probably deliver the feature you want so much but may have some inconsistency at the beginning OR you can buy a console that doesnt have that feature and will never have it…

Of course, if you are in that “give me back the 100$ difference” group, then, you may think its a good reason.

I personally don’t make decision based on 1 opinion of a beta tester.

          • GmailIsDown

one big thing that differentiates xbox one from ps4 is the kinect. and microsoft made it a big selling point, so big that it has to let everyone have one, like it or not. ps4 has fewer games, but it has better hardware. and xbox one has superior technology.

now if this “superior technology” does not make kinect a lot better than the first generation one, it will be a deal breaker for some.

          • Xboner2013

            “superior”

I would say a step backwards, or going over tired ground.

    • roozbeh, again

Yep I saw that too, kinda worrying. Hopefully it will be fixed by the time it releases.

    • Sledg

I don’t know. I’ll give an opinion on it when I’m the one controlling it. 2 months is a long time in a dev cycle.

There’s so many factors on why it could have not responded well so it’s hard to take that review seriously. But hey, it’s your money so do what you want with it.

    • https://twitter.com/Ganon255 Ganon255

      Good for you. Nobody cares.

    • symbolset

Dear auntie, delete the killer select all.

  • arrow2010

An input method has to be 100% accurate or it’s garbage.

    • shinji

Then all input methods must be garbage by your definition.

      • ArrowSmith

Nope. My keyboard & mouse work 100% correct all the time. These input methods have been perfected over the last decades. I’m not saying Kinect might not get to 100%, but it will take many decades.

        • shinji

Well that wasn’t really my point but I guess I’ll be more precise. Input doesn’t have to be 100% for it to be well accepted. Voice recognition won’t ever be 100% but it is widely accepted. I notice it on many automated phone systems (as an example). Also touch input isn’t 100% either (though it doesn’t tend to error either) yet is widely accepted.

        • MaximMillion

          MULTIPLE ACCOUNT VOTE SPAMMER ALERT!

  • evilfangs .

Dam, go out for the day and come back to the whole blog in arguments. At least it’s a good read.

    • roozbeh, again

      *Damn

  • MaximMillion

    Well put :)
It’s progress, and we have to evolve past mere button pressing at some point!

  • GmailIsDown

or you can get a dropcam for $150, or a foscam for $70

  • MrRadiolips

    https://www leapmotion com/ such a better idea.

    • roozbeh, again

Kinda seems the same as kinect

    • Xboner2013

There are other devices like this.
1.) there are already PC touch screens, so
2.) those will be more accurate
3.) no physical contact gives you less immersion to the app or game ie no resistance

Why would someone buy this, a true artist is going to want a tablet or touch screen so they have pressure points. I think people watched the Minority Report too much with all these types of devices. A physical object ie a m/k or some types of controller are the best input devices. Touch screens are okay for content consumption, not so good at content creation.

Not even close enough to be accurate enough for most apps, much slower than a traditional input device and no connection to the virtual world ie touch. A waste of time for most people.

    • Guest

That’s complete junk as its FOV is as narrow as a needle.

      • MrRadiolips

Sorry that you wouldnt be able to dance with it.

  • Andy Wilding

Can kinect calculate the time of flight from my window to the ground?

    • Guest

Yes, when you follow it after it.
