A few Xbox One’s have appeared in the wild

Due to a retail partner’s system issue, a very small number of Xbox One consoles were shipped to consumers before the 11/22 street date.  We’re pleased to see the initial response to Xbox One has been so positive, but given we are still putting the finishing touches on our games, UI and online services, as well as confidential partner and media agreements, these consoles units will be restricted from connecting to Xbox Live until closer to our launch date.

We love that @Moonlightswami is excited about Xbox One and we can’t wait for him to enjoy it closer to launch.

Xbox One By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • Jeramy

You should have left it open for them. It’s not their fault they got it early.

    • evilfangs .

It’s the retailers fault but it’s also not Microsoft’s fault, the product isn’t ready it’s still being worked on to fix bugs and make sure everything is online.

      • Jeramy

True, but I know that I would be upset, lol. I’m sure it’s really cool!

    • Seth Parmer

They know the street date… They could’ve waited.

      • EldritchWarlord

I wouldn’t, though I think I’d probably wait on connecting to Xbox LIVE.

  • GmailIsDown

i thought you perma banned their gametags as well

    • Dylan

      Temporary console ban.

      • Ash2X

…which isn´t exactly something I whould call a “ban” since the Network isn´t fully up yet.

  • Nathanzz

    A wild Xbox One appeared!
    Micrusoftys uses temp-ban.
    It’s super effective!

    • GmailIsDown

this reminds me that i need to play more pokemon x/y

    • xPutNameHerex

Give this man an early Xbox One!

  • fastharryDOTcom

is it true that it is a 720 line agreement?

    • Riddick Snipes

      Wow.dude.wow.

    • fastharryDOTcom

c’mon guys…all those downvotes, LOL?….I was having some fun!..I could have gone with something else, maybe this….

Well, at least Ms’s agreement is only 720 lines…I heard the Sony agreement is 1080 lines if it happens…

BTW, I have the first order for a ONE at Gamestop….picking it up at Midnight launch..funded by my Craigs List sale of a pre order PS4 I am selling today…

  • Riddick Snipes

I rented ghosts for my 360 and have been playing it for 2 days and I gotta say it looks awesome. Its still cod which u love and I definitely have had more than one feeling of ‘ damn this game could not look better’ moments. I’m really curious bout the ones ghosts and can’t wait for reviews. Cod haters need not reply. Does anyone know the resolution of cod games in the 360. I think Its 600p but I could b wrong.

    • ryder4life22187

I think it pulled up as 720p when i played it if im not mistaken

      • Riddick Snipes

I’m pretty sure I’ve read in the past that they r around 600p or 540p to keep the 60fps. Its then upscaled to 720p. I’m just not sure if this applies to ghosts. It looks at least as good if not better than previous cods. I have a 1080p TV and my 360 is set to 1080p. So as far as I know if its in say 600p for example, the 360 will upscale it to 720p and then output upscale again to send to my TV. Or maybe its just goes straight from 600p to 1080p. There r jaggies here and there but mostly the game looks like its as sharp as blurays I use with my ps3..Maybe

        • Lucas Sanches Cestari

my tv is full HD… but i still can’t see the difference between 720p and 540p… am i blind??? ‘-’

          • Riddick Snipes

I think that the 360 is just great at upscaling.

          • xbox_gamer

And if you change it to 720p to 1080p you won’t see that much difference either. What does matter is your refresh rate. If your tv is 60 hertz,120, 240, 600 etc .etc.

    • Does Not Equal

Did you get an Xbox One early?

    • beardyman3218

Yes every cod since mw2 has been 600p on 360 and ps3.

  • Fon462

I am sure this is all because on NDA in place. Pat least they made it right.

    • JuanCabrera

He hardly goes on Facebook! I think he would value a reddit upvote a whole lot more.

  • http://www.craveonline.com/ Jonathan Leack

Good handling of the situation. It’s unfortunate that it was blown so out of proportion by gamers, but that’s the nature of the business.

I can’t wait for my next-gen consoles to arrive!

  • Christine Ck Katherine O’hara

any idea which retailers rushed the nda?

    • MacPh1sto

Looks like it was Target who mailed out around 150 XB1s as soon as they hit a distribution center.

  • Christine Ck Katherine O’hara

hmmm mayyyybbe in va? oh well if not a 2 week wait ain’t too bad

  • HGamer

So you will unban him on launch date?

    • Death Dealer

      Yes.

  • ElektroDragon

Well, they could always just cuddle in bed with it until launch day.

  • Anonymous

    Yeah sure a “mistake”.

  • beardyman3218

    Silly retailers.

  • Voreo Sabrae

Hey Major, question for you. These rumors of the xbox division being possibly sold off with the next CEO….if true, where would you like to see Xbox go? Like what company… I personally think *though very unlikely* it should go to Valve, Nintendo or Amazon… Valve really could use the support Xbox has, very bad…. waiting weeks for support is no fun XD…not to mention id love to see halo go PC

    • beardyman3218

Rumors are just that…rumors, its much more likely they are going to have xbox as a separate entity because it sells so well, that way people would have more shares in xbox without having to worry about windows doing well or not so well.

      • Voreo Sabrae

Still, if it came down to it, i think those 3 companies could use it. Imagine what Valve could do then, combine xbox live with the steam platform, as well as some IP’s ?

        • Nick Peck

It will never happen. none of those companies have the money to buy the division . it won’t be sold off, that’s some idiot investor thinking its a good idea because he might make a few more dollars lol. stocks would plummet and so would both brands.

Why build a shared ecosystem across devices to then sell it and change it all? won’t happen. it will just be some internal changes at most.

          • EldritchWarlord

It’s actually one of the candidates for CEO who said he would sell off Xbox.
I think he’s a moron though, he also said he’d like to see Microsoft Office on OS X, iOS, and Android (which it already is).

          • Death Dealer

Yeah, you’re right. It’s not going to happen as that would fragment everything MS has built up.

          • usrev

            this was discussed before.

nintendo could buy it but the investment they would have to put in is staggering. (AKA, all cash on hand, and get a long for more but with their credit they probably can)

apple could do it but, apple.

            amazon probably could..

it’s also entirely possible that if sold it will be parted out. game IPS and studios might be sold separately than assets and stuff. so maybe nintendo will buy Rare Ips back.

          • Voreo Sabrae

If anyone does i do hope its Amazon, they have the infrastructure. And then they sell Rare back to nintendo to make nintendo fans happy again hehe

      • usrev

it’s a bit more than a rumor, the CEO basically said if xbox doesn’t fit with MS (aka, profits are little or nothing) they will be selling off xbox (along with other stuff like bing)

xbox division won’t survive without MS’s bankroll for R&D so alone it won’t survive

    • Nathanzz

I think spinning the Xbox brand off as its own company would be tantamount to killing it. It probably could not survive without the larger Microsoft corporation behind it. I also doubt Playstation would survive without the power and money of Sony’s media empire behind it. The video game console landscape is littered with the corpses of standalone hardware developers who have died off or exited the field. Nintendo is the only one left standing, and even their legs are looking mighty shaky these days with the Wii U threatening to be a repeat of the GameCube failure.
Xbox would have to be snapped up by somebody who has a vested interest in the living room, a lot of cash on hand, and no compelling competitive product line. Intel could be a good match. Maybe Nvidia. Assuming either could stomach selling an AMD product until they develop a replacement console in house for the next-next-gen. Companies like Valve, Google, and Apple would probably just rather let Xbox die and then fight in the resulting market-share free-for-all to establish their own products and services.

      • Voreo Sabrae

Not to mention with apple it would be the iBox, and overpriced to hell even more

  • xbox_gamer

More bad pr. As Sony said if this happens they won’t block the system.

    • evilfangs .

The console isn’t ready yet, it more then likely still has bugs and other problems which won’t be fixed till the 22nd. Allowing people to see and play a in-complete console is bad PR, be or Sony or Microsoft.

Two weeks is a long time till launch, a lot of things can be fixed and changed.

      • xbox_gamer

Years in developement. Again if either system is not ready now then there are big problems ahead.

        • Nick Peck

You have no clue to how things work in the real world, obviously. the ps4 has a rather large day one update as well, as do many electronics these days. Hardware has to ship out at a precise time leaving them to tweak and then have to update the way they are doing it. stop hating for no reason and use some common sense (a very uncommon thing these days sadly, such poor parenting).

          • xbox_gamer

You have no clue about me punk. I have a degree in electronics and Cisco networking. Before patches don’t tell me they can’t be ready. Just like games today day one patch. It’s about getting games out and systems out. no cares if they are ready. Before wiiu, Nintendo didn’t have to patch one game or system. why ? They make Games that work. Ps3 has had to patch almost every game and online patches since released. I don’t attack you But if you want to go down that road we can.

          • xbox_gamer

Also many Electronics don’t have patches. Do Tv’s, Dvr players, Sterios, Car digital systems, Etc, etc, No the electronics you mass smeared , you mean Game consoles And an update in normal use is not a patch. GTA 5 mess and others are called updates but it’s a Patch. A regular update may fix something but it’s usually just that an update, newer firmware , bios, clocking, etc . etc.

          • xbox_gamer

Your tag says it all, your the nitpick, meaning you complain about anything.
verb (used without object) 1. to be excessively concerned with or critical of inconsequential details.

I’m saying the truth , you just don’t like it.

          • Timothy Shilleto

tv’s and blu-ray players do have patches

          • xbox_gamer

no they have updates if they are smart firmware/bios and again thats all new .before it had to work and since everything is made over seas or is all asian components now none of it works right

          • Timothy Shilleto

            patches are updates
i can change that so pants by editing them making them short or soo on but shrugs

          • roozbeh, again

You don’t remember the 5 gig day one patch the Wii U had? I do, and it bricked my console

          • xbox_gamer

you dont read do you , I said before wiiu, Thats why people argue they don’t read

          • andrew salvat

anyway way the PS4 need I day one update ooooyea right they need to hide the DMR.

    • beardyman3218

They cannot risk the service being compromised due to a bug they can iron out before release. You wouldnt eat a pie if it wasnt finished cooking.

      • xbox_gamer

If the xbox is not ready yet as they shipping now to stores then there is a bigger problem

        • beardyman3218

Its not the console that isnt ready they are still chopping and changing stuff with xbox live, they cannot risk someone attempting to take advantage of the service whilst there is work still going on. They wouldnt find a game online anyway as theres only a few people with the console

    • Kieran

Sony console is releasing in 4 to 5 days. Microsoft don’t release 12 to 13 days. Sony, can’t do anything, as there release day in America, is almost here.

      • usrev

sony’s console is just ready for release, taco bell promotion gives out early ps4s, the console comes out this week, all the patches and stuff should be n place already, game servers will be coming online now or in the near future.

xbone doesn’t even come out for a week or 2. they aren’t ready for people yet so MS didn’t expect them to ship out.

    • Does Not Equal

Bad PR for the store who released the systems too early, maybe.

      • roozbeh, again

It was Target, you expect any better?

  • Kieran

He was 98 per cent positive about the XB1, he played that night. He had a slight issue with the XB1′s Game DVR been slightly choppy quality, but overall, i think his responses on Twitter eased lot of peoples fears about the console. He seems like a nice guy too, just by the way he responded to people asking him XB1 questions.

I also liked the way he put out the info, very detailed, not vague. Its good Microsoft will unban him commonsense prevailed in this situation.

    • beardyman3218

Couldnt agree more, if anything this as helped ms more than hindered.

  • roozbeh, again

    Off topic.

Major Nelson actually served in Iraq?

    • Death Dealer

      No.

      • roozbeh, again

        Thanks for clearing that up.

    • BigBernard

      Oh dear God…

      • roozbeh, again

Just a question, no need to cringe.

        • BigBernard

          Plenty of need.

          • roozbeh, again

Then cringe away my friend, cringe far far away.

  • xbox_gamer

From one Veteran(Army) to another, I honor you this coming Veterans Day. Peace to my old Fort where I worked and lived for 20 years . Ft. Hood. Tx, Killeen

    • Arcona

LOL Larry isn’t a vet. He just picked that name cause he thought it sounded cool.

      • GmailIsDown

i always thought he picked up this name from Major Nelson in
        I Dream of Jeannie

  • Timothy Shilleto

    unboxing videos are dumb anyway

  • roozbeh, again

    God Target, pull yourself together.

  • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

We also receive an XBOX one earlier in Montreal, a huge xbox one lol (the contest), can’t wait too see when the vent is going to unlock. For once, we get some love from MS in Montreal. Will there be any announcement on when the event is going to take place ?

    • GmailIsDown

what? set it up and start posting videos already!

      • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

lol, the event was pretty nice. I missed the live action, but i saw the pictures and videos. I don’t get the downvote, people just don’t get it anymore lol

  • Liquidfx Xboxdude

I think that having something awesome and not being able to play with it would be too much torture. it was a curse for this dude to get his xbox early unless ms hooks him up with some free stuff for actually helping out with some worries over the one. I think he deserves some goodies, not like you guys can’t afford to do that.

  • ikari_paul

yeah, read about what happened with Target, that they shipped like 150 X1′s to costumers (dont think it was unintentional; big companies dont behave like amateurs. this was intended PR, imo)

also read that M$’s initial reaction was “classic” m$ overreaction… but apparently M$ learned something from past PR fiascos, and now everything is OK. Its really not the gamers fault, but Target’s. But i guess its easier to punish the weakest link :P

    • usrev

It’s not as bad as people think.

if you worked at MS and saw suddenly a non-registered xbox one was online this early before launch you would assume it was stolen or a dev or something broke NDA.

I think they will be un banned by next tuesday

      • ikari_paul

yeah, its only fair. and he got a free trip to X1′s launch party

      • GmailIsDown

        why next Tuesday?

    • The Cthulhu

Stickin’ it to Microsoft wit da dolla sign yo!

    • Does Not Equal

Somewhere out there, 150 people in the costume industry are playing their early systems offline.

      • Alex_Atkin_UK

But the consoles don’t FUNCTION offline until they get the day-one firmware update from Xbox Live.

So that meant 150 people are actually staring at a useless brick.

        • Brian Skene

people got the day 1 update lol

          • Alex_Atkin_UK

Interesting, I wouldn’t expect it to be launched on the service.

I suppose it makes sense, Xbox employees must be running on it (or a release candidate of it) to ensure its working for launch.

I wonder if anyone else gets their early if the block applies period (it wont work) or only applies once the update has been applied?

        • Does Not Equal

          Whoosh! Right over your head.

  • Ricardo Rico

glad to see the response now official in this blog, shoutouts to NeoGaf btw

    • Guest

      NeoGAF can GTFO!

      • Nate Welles

What because they criticise MS? So what? You’d love the forum if they praised them.

  • Fred

You have a good point, but this is also an issue of ownership vs license. People who buy a console may own the hardware, but they license the games and use a service to play or go online. They can still use their console, but to take advantage of LIVE they have to abide by its terms and conditions.

So Xbox LIVE has a service, but they haven’t officially gone online with it yet for the Xbox One. So seems to me Microsoft has said “it will work the same time everyone else’s does”. Sounds fair to me.

  • Michael D. Harrison

At .002 cents per view without ad clicks I would say 1000 dolllars on the low end. It’s BS that they blocked the unboxing.

  • Dylan

It is true. It’s an abuse of the system.

The dude uses what little he makes on videos for his college tuition, which makes this even sadder.

    • Mostly_Angry

“what little he makes on videos for his college tuition”

Hmm, sounds like he had $500 to spend though…

  • ZEISMAN

    Good work!

  • Andy

Hmm… 500gb – (~20-45gb per game + mandatory install) = how many games on the drive at one time?

May put a lot of us off digital downloads if we’ve got to re-yank 43gb for NFL etc coz we haven’t played it in a while and we shifted it off the drive. Physical media still tradeable, plus this, means digital delivery suddenly looks a lot less appetising…

    • Guest

Are they still tradeable? I’ve just seen the PS terms of use being updated with a paragraph that specifically forbids the reselling of games. Hypocrisy at its finest.
The industry is going there as a whole.
External media support on the Xbox One is coming within a month and you won’t fill that HDD any time before that.

      • Andy

That’s if external media is even supported for storing downloaded content. I’d sure hope so, that would be useful.

Would laugh if Sony saying they supported trading just to flush MS into doing the same – and now they’re backtracking leaving MS doing it themselves. Top trolling from Sony if so… ;-)

      • WARLORD

Apparently the same restrictions exist for the PlayStation 3 and its own games, although Sony never actually enforced them, and I don’t think thy will start lol not after the press thy got at E3.

      • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

whats the eta on the ability to share digital game ?
i guess i can still play a game at a friend’s house with digital game, but i have to log in an dredownload the whole thing. that’s ok, but what is i want to give the game to a friend ?

    • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

they said in the past you got infinite space on cloud to store games you bought

      • Andy

Cloud-storage for games isn’t an issue – you don’t store the game
there. Game-saves, yeah probably. But the game itself, you just pull down again. Makes no sense to push 43gb of NFL *back* to the internet.

And this is all very well for those with uncapped – and FAST – broadband. I’ve moved to Fibre now with 80/20mb up/down. I wouldn’t even be able to contemplate it on normal, mainstream, ADSL2+…

        • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

you have a point, but the way they spoke about it was really like you can have an infinite amount of digital game available on your console. We didn’t had much info about it, wait and see. Maybe it’s just a “install the one you play and then if you run out of space, don’t worry erase it and redownload it again if you ever need to”

      • Volitar Prime

Space in the cloud means little when you are up against your ISP’s download cap.

        • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

if bandwidth is a problem to you, buy the disc and that’s it. Are you gonna blame MS for your poor ISP services ? I hate my ISP too, but just blame them.

On a constructive note, ask them what they charge for extra bandwidht. Mine ask 5$ for 20g if i exceed my 150g limit

      • Luis Antunes

I don’t know why they say “space on cloud to store games you bought”, that is a lie.
They have the games on their servers and you have a check on your account that says that you own the game, that is the reality.

      • slasaru

Whats the practical application of cloud installation? Can you imagine what internet speed is required to play from cloud? Not just stream games but play as from the hard drive

If only redownload, thats different. Looks like they provide one copy for all and it can be downloaded as now they download games on demand

So no cloud is needed for storing games, i think

        • DavidinCT

You still need to have the game installed on your console to play, So games from the cloud is only a great idea if it’s a game that you play all the time. Never mind a 40gb game could take hours depending on your connection speeds (I want to play a game NOW but, the download will take 2 hours, defeats the point ?)

Also, how about a year or 2 down the line when the game is no longer availabe ? MS pulls it from their servers and you can’t play the game you paid for if you removed it from your system or replaced it.

There will be a few games that I do digital downloads(like COD that I use MP all the time) on but, 90% of them will be disc based because of these facts.

Unless MS can say EVERY digital download game will be available till 5 years after the console is disco’ed, I wont do that…

  • Hugoku

PS4 Launches earlier? Get some Xboxes out earlier to create buzz. Well played MS.

    • Alex_Atkin_UK

Unlikely, as if you cannot connect to Xbox Live you cannot get the day-one firmware update that enables offline mode. If anything it would be more frustrating owning a useless brick for several weeks.

  • beardyman3218

Is there an option to automatically mute kinects mic whilst joining multiplayer games?

    • roozbeh, again

Just like the current one, I believe it can.

  • Luis Antunes

I don´t understand why they banned the consoles, it is not their fault to receive it earlier than the rest, they should let it enjoy the console because he payed for it.

    • Alex_Atkin_UK

They didn’t ban as such, they just blocked them from going on Xbox Live because right now its a controlled environment for testing readiness for launch and having 150 more people on there breaks that control.

The same way if I was launching a new website I would block all IPs except my own for testing as having random people dropping on there, seeing it broken, can have unexpected consequences and also gives a bad first experience. Its likely not all the servers are actually enabled right now, an extra 150 people could overload it.

  • Byyys

A few Xbox ones appeared in the wild, so what does Microsoft do. BAN THEM! hahaha!

Why didnt Microsoft put up a system message like “You need a day one update to
be able to enjoy the Xbox One to it’s fullest. That update will be
released on Nov 22. Come back and join us then”…just dont let the
xbox one download the update until the release date..banning them means they will return the product and hate Microsoft for it. more bad PR for Microsoft!

  • Shawn Springer

Imagine if the 24 hour connection DRM was still in effect.. He would of had a paper weight til the NOVEMBER 22nd launch.

  • MrRadiolips

    Forcing the cloud on us.

    • MrRadiolips

Good name for a band. lol

  • Guest

    GAF = for morons.

  • Andy Wilding

One of the reasons why I wont buy the console, yeah people say cloud storage or external drives (when supported) but that’s not going to help since the core operating system files are stored in the internal hard drive. its very doubtful that Ms would have a system restore function for a non user replacable drive.

  • Nathan

Microsoft has the worst marketing and communications group on the planet… Shameful!
