Using Snap with Xbox One

A closer look at using Snap with Xbox One

Xbox One By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • Mik3t

    great feature

  • John T Greene

cant wait to use it myself

  • Ivanx360xpira

very, very nice! Can I snap the guide, in the case I want to change TV channel while playing a game??

  • consumedesign

Blah… I don’t need all these things, just bring good games and lower console prices.

    • evilfangs .

A game console built just about games will never last in this day and age.

You can buy £5 phones which only phone and text yet you get idiots spending £500+ on phones just because it has apps / camera etc.

A TV isn’t just a TV anymore, and a PC isn’t just about doing office work.

I’m sure most of us would only want a gaming machine but it wouldn’t last.

      • Jorge Garza

Is not stupid to buy a $500+ USD phone if you can afford it.

If you have to stop eating in order to save some money to get a $500+ USD phone, then it is stupid.

    • Michael Booth

well I for one Love everything I’ve seen with the Xbox One I will hook up my direct Tv box and all dat. also saves a hdmi slot in my tv sense I only have 2

  • Michael Booth

I wouldn’t doubt it as long as the game has the feature to do it.

  • xbox_gamer

Traded in one of my xboxs, one of my ps3 and some games, And got PS4 free at game stop , also used my gamestop point and extra 50 % for trade in systems

    • xbox_gamer

I’m still getting xbox one but I’ll Wait until next spring

    • evilfangs .

Sorry to be pedantic but you didn’t get PS4 for free if you traded in a Xbox 360, PS3 and some games.

      • xbox_gamer

Ok I didn’t pay for it with cash, Oh and traded some 3ds games too. It’s not like Game stop doesn’t rip you off, I know

  • F.Witzer

I’m already sold.. just start shipping! :-)

  • Mitchell Hall

Awesome. Stop teasing us!!!lol can’t wait to get mine in 10 freaking days!!!!!!

  • WARLORD

The snap looked cool and all, but I could not help but notice how the game he was playing looked like cr@p. I hop that’s a demo or something and not the real game..

  • nicholas laney

Is it that digital foundry report true where it has DR3 as 720p and sub 30 fps. Hitting as low as 10 on the machine?! That’s not next Gen I dont care how many zombies are on screen

    • evilfangs .

Seen plenty of game plays of DR3 and it doesn’t look like it drops fps.

In the earlier gamescom builds yea it did during times when you was mowing down hundreds of zombies at a time but that wasn’t the final build of the game.

Digital Foundry is also the site that can’t even do a comparison video correctly. So take it as you like.

      • nicholas laney

I hope so but it is a brand new article with the retail copy. They have a machine on it that counts frames and textures. Just trying to figure this out. I cant link the article here of course

        • nicholas laney

also there were no zombies in the room when it happened

    • EldritchWarlord

I played DR3 at an Area One event and did not notice any low framerate. This was with literally hundreds of zombies on-screen.
Based on this experience I would be very skeptical of that digital foundry report.

    • Jason

I must be one of the luckiest people in the gaming community. I just cannot spot the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps. Even watching the digital foundry video I couldn’t tell what the difference was when the counter dipped. I really tried looking for something. I must’ve watched the video 10 times.
10 fps should have looked real bad and choppy but everything on the screen was smooth.
At this point in time I do have to express some concern that both consoles seem to be unable to take things to another level, but hopefully that is just because developers need more time with the hardware.

      • Dylan

Have you ever played GTA IV or really any Rockstar game? If so, have you noticed how smooth the game is in your house (especially in IV), and then you walk outside and suddenly it isn’t smooth and is much jumpier?

Well that’s because the game can’t handle a fast frame rate with so many things in the environment. It is VERY noticeable. That’s one of the reasons COD has been so successful, it just plays better than most FPS’s out there, very smooth at 60fps.

I’d compare it to playing an online game with a bad connection, it’s like a lag.
Comparison videos are mostly BS on a scrunched computer monitor by the way, wouldn’t put much stock into them.

        • Jason

Yes, I have seen frame rates drop so low that everything is choppy, but what I am referring to is 30 fps and 60 fps. I literally cannot tell the difference. I have never played a game and thought to myself that the framerate is horrible unless it bogs down so much that there is actual stuttering.

  • Charles Walton III

I think this snap feature and being able to switch between apps very fast are two really great features of the new Xbox One. I am so excited for the system. Can’t wait. Just days away. And of course the games…Forza 5 and also can’t wait for Halo!!

  • Elan Gabriel

Major, the snaps looks cool and useful, which is good.

Could you post a video/write a blog post regarding the Blu-Ray playback capabilities of the Xbox 1 ?

    - Can we “snap” blu-ray discs as we can TV ?
    - Is it region locked for movies ? If so, is it based on your account region ? Machine region ?
    - Will 3D by supported in the future with a patch ?
    - Does it Bitstream HD audio ?

    And a a streamer ? Can it play MKVs ? Multi-Audio tracks files ?

The X1 is a great all in one machine, and I would like it to also replace my Blu-Ray player/Streamer, but I couldn’t find anything about the Xbox 1 as a movie player/BD Player.

    Thanks!

    • Death Dealer

      Yes
Yes, machine region. Region free is only for games.
      Yes
      Don’t know
Streamer? Do you mean streaming media content to other devices? Then yes.
      MKV…No unfortunately not (yet)
No, at least not that I have seen yet…

      • Elan Gabriel

        Thanks! You do know a lot… :)

I mean “pulling” movies from the NAS/Home Server using the Xbox 1, and playing them back (and not “Play to” the Xbox). I can do this with the 360, but its System Video Player can’t play modern codecs and is very limited in functionality.

Hopefully they will add MKV support…

      • Jason

I searched for a list of video files that the XB1 can play and and I haven’t found anything yet. Is there some place you know to find out kinds it will play?

        • Death Dealer

Not yet, but it won’t be much different than the Xbox 360 I guess, except for higher supported bitrates.

      • GmailIsDown

PS3 is region free, both for games and for blu-ray discs. i ordered both PS4 and Xbox One and we’ll see if they are region free regarding to blu-ray discs.

        • Guest

Nope, PS3 plays region free Blu-Rays, it’s not a region free player.

    • http://www.stephenking.com/ FellowHuman

I hope they add 3D BluRay soon.

  • Stephen Collins

My question is: does the snap feature work with the HDMI passthrough? Meaning: if I plug my DVR’s HDMI into Xbox One and then Xbox One into the TV, then could I watch my DVR on snap?

    • Death Dealer

      Yes.

      • Elan Gabriel

Nice. So one could hook up the 360 to the HDMI in, snap it, and play two games at once :)

        • Death Dealer

          Theoretically yes.

        • Stephen Collins

LOL, exactly what I was thinking

          • Death Dealer

            :D

          • Elan Gabriel

            LOL, Great timing!

      • Stephen Collins

So, theoretically, I could plug my Xbox 360 into my Xbox One and then someone could play Xbox 360 at the same time as Xbox One (albeit on a tiny window)

        • Nathan O

in theory yes. Sucks you gotta swap controllers though. If MS was really thinking they’d let me plug in my 360 through the USB port and have my 360 running the game but XB1 translating the new controller to something the 360 understands

          • GmailIsDown

would be awesome if Xbox One could snap to a smartglass device, like Sony’s remoteplay. playing Xbox 360/Xbox One/PS3/PS4 games on my Windows tablet should be cool.

          • Nathan O

I have a feeling you are going to be pleasantly surprised in the near future

  • Vince

Major, what’s with these freaking emails that say our credit cards have expired for Xbox One pre-orders?

    • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

look like a scam a saw a few report of those. they probably expect you to clic a link to a fake MS site that will take your cc number.

it is technically impossible for a transaction to be accepted on a gateway if the information enter or the date was incorrect.

  • Samuel Herrera

Can’t wait to play Battlefield 4 while Skype chatting with my squad/friends in snap-mode! Greatness awaits one week after PS4 launch!

  • xbox_gamer

Can’t play with a xbox at retail as u can a ps4. so I bought ps4. still have 360 so who cares. Somethings wrong if you cant play it everywhere like the ps4 and wiiu and in days past any new system was playable weeks before release. This is a fail. The wiiu will sell more than xbox 1

    • Dylan

I doubt that, the Wii is outselling the Wii U! If the DRM was still around, I think there might have been a chance of that, but not anymore. The Xbox One will do well, and will most likely be in second worldwide.

I think I could sell more lemonade cups in my neighborhood than Wii U’s worldwide

    • GmailIsDown

Microsoft Stores have playable Xbox Ones available since last week.

    • Nathan O

doubt that and so do you

  • Guest

PS4 sales to hit 49 million sales by end of 2017, Xbox One at 38 million, says analyst firm IHS. PS4 will perform stronger than Xbox One in Europe, the UK and Japan, while Microsoft will continue its dominance in the US.

    • GmailIsDown

because PS4 is $100 cheaper! duh.

      • Shawn Springer

Actually its more powerful. Japanese, Uk and others are tech savvy people who want the absolute best. Native 1080p games on the PS4 will outperform the xbox 720p upscalling. Shouldn’t cloud computing make all xbox one games 1080p without upscalling ?? I am still super pissed about a lot of the games having to cut back because the system is boggled down.

        • Sam Yerushalmi

You guys have to get your info straight….not all PS4 games are 1080p…hence
           BF4 on ps4..

        • roozbeh, again

PC or the Steambox is going to win with that notion, not PS4

        • Guest

Wow, $0N¥ fan desperation at its finest.

  • Sam Yerushalmi

Larry, what about people with OTA antenna will there be support for that….or do you need an HDMI connection…(cable box). Please advise. Thanks.

    • GmailIsDown

      OTA won’t work i believe.

      • Michael Burden

It would if the receiver has a HDMI output, and there are a few available for a decent price. I’m planning on getting one to use with my Xbox One.

    • Brandon K

Look at the back of the Xbox one. It only has an hdmi in. No other way of inputting video(from a cable) so you need a cable box. Its 2013 time for an upgrade :)

      • Sam Yerushalmi

I did upgrade…new ota antenna has better picture than cable…its true hd….hd over cable is downgraded for bandwidth…also all my tvs are internet tvs….so all movies and cable shows I stream in hd all free…so I dont need cable and dont have to pay for it…so you stand corrected and you need to get with the times.

    • Michael Burden

I had found on Amazon a digital receiver that has HDMI output for about $45 which I plan on using with my Xbox One when it arrives. I initially looked it up to use with a 41″ monitor I was looking to get at work, then I thought why use it with my Xbox One. Hopefully the IR blaster on the Kinect will work with this and my projector so I can eliminate some remotes.

      • Sam Yerushalmi

Thanks…this is exactly what I will need….can you send me make and model….so I can look into buying one.

        • Michael Burden

The one I am looking at is a HomeWorx HW-150PVR. It can also record to USB or play back from there.

          • Sam Yerushalmi

Cool…can you let me and everyone else on here know if it works. Thanks again…..
            much appreciated!

          • Michael Burden

No problem, I’ll post once I get all the equipment and try it out. Probably won’t get the TV receiver until the week after I get the One unless some funds become available before then as everything now is committed to paying for the One and a few games.

  • GmailIsDown

will i be able to snap between 2 games?

    • Chris

No. Apps run in a virtualized OS, which has a very small reserved resource pool(essentially a small version of Windows). Games run in another virtualized OS(the Xbox OS) that has far more resources available to it. they can’t allow running 2 games at once, because the console can’t process that information.

The point of a console is to know the hardware, and be as efficient with it as possible. Games are going to require every resource they can get their hands on. To run 2 games at once would go against that. Also, you could only play one game at a time anyway so there isn’t a point.

I do believe, however, that there is instant switching between games if they are digital copies. But it probably implies a few seconds of wait time while it loads the game, and simply means that you don’t have to go back to the dashboard to start up another game.

      • GmailIsDown

thank you for the explanation :)

  • Shawn Springer

    Hey, no texting and driving!

    • CXK

All of these features are wildly distracting to drivers.

Honestly, I’m pretty excited for this.

  • Shawn Springer

I rather have 1080p than to have to pool resources and shut down system to do another activity. When you are in the game, you are gaming. I leave it at that. If people log in to xbox live, i see a notification. Later I can try to join or not. But why do you want to watch tv when playing? You could easily pause the game, pick up the tv remote and flick to the tv channel. I have it easy like that. Kids want to irritate each other, they will give commands to cause havoc on the other child’s game.

    • Nathan O

Then buy a PS4. That’s all it does. 1080p games with choppy inconsistent framerates. Hell if thats all thats important to you than by a PC. Consoles are about more than pixels and polygons. And if you live in a house where someone is gonna grief you through your kinect you simply say ‘kinect off’. problem solved

    • Jonathan Pedroza

I don’t care how many teraflops or how much ram does the system has. I care about what it does, and what games it run. You should try this too, it’s fun.

    • Guest

Looking at the direct comparison shots of CoD: Ghosts, you’re full of sh*t. They look the same and the Xbox 360 has even better texturing.

  • Steve

I’m 39 years old and feel like a kid waiting for Christmas… Already warned the wife that I would be playing xbox all that weekend as well as took Friday the 22nd off of work .

  • GmailIsDown

i don’t see why not. it is a simple passthrough and hopefully there won’t be much latency. in fact i plan to connect my PS4 to Xbox One and make a video about Xbox One snapping from some Xbox One game directly into some PS4 game like Killzone.

  • Nathan O

It is only one size. Whomever develops the app can specially format it for snap mode but as far as TV goes, it’s not gonna get much better.

    • Guest

Yes, unlike Windows 8 it’s only one size on the Xbox One.

  • rkm80

    Wicked!

  • Mike Putnam

    damn thats pretty cool
