Welcome Jeff Rubenstein to the Xbox Team

Please join me in welcoming Jeff Rubenstein to my team. Jeff has been in the industry for a quite some time, but many of you may know him from the great work he did while at Sony. While you’ll see Jeff at various community events, and posting occasionally here on my blog, he’s also working on additional community driven programs that we’re not ready to announce yet. In the meantime, I asked Jeff to write a short blurb to (re?) introduce himself to the Xbox Community so he can jump right in and get started:

I’m beyond thrilled to be joining the Xbox team at such an exciting time for the industry. During the interview process, I was taken with how passionate and positive everyone is about gaming, and in how highly they value customer opinion. Especially important to my decision to join the team is the way Microsoft has demonstrated a willingness to listen to the community – and act on what it hears – quite clearly as of late.

I’m also hoping they’ll let me play Titanfall.

Little known fact: I’ve actually known Larry since he helped me on a story I wrote for the Orlando Sentinel back in 2007. We’ve stayed in contact ever since, and his vision on using social media to interact with gamers has been a key influence on my career. Joining Major Nelson’s team is an awesome opportunity, and I look forward to working closely with you all. See you soon!

You can find Jeff here on Twitter or here on Xbox Live

  • Skrilla

is this the same guy who won when you was asking everybody to email you for that job?

    • Jeff Rubenstein

  • Jordan Rogers

Yeah Jeff! Such an inspiration since we met briefly at the Sentinel (FF7 PSP, hell yes!) and I’ve been able to see what hard work and persistence will get you! Best of luck dude!

    • Jeff Rubenstein

You’ve got a great memory, my friend. How have you been?

      • Jordan Rogers

Dec 1 will be the beginning of year 6 as web dev at UCF, so not too shabby! Hope one day I get a chance to contribute in some way to the industry; got plenty of friends in Seattle, so who knows!

But seriously, it’s been a real treat and inspiration to watch your career take off and I can’t wait to read your work for Xbox!

  • Alex

Sony Sleeper Agent, say Playstation Backwards and he is activated.

    • Jason Mounce

Phil Harrison requested backup on creating sabotages on the inside.

      • Guest

Oh look another crybaby $0N¥ N4Gtard!

        • Jason Mounce

Oh look the zealous Anti-Sony child who stalks people on Disqus named Pauperkill2013 who makes comments, deletes it so his name turns into Guest and runs away like a little….Hmmm…Crybaby?

I liked the part where you made a response to me in another website, only to get Banned, again. I’m sure your autism powers will be safe to push to the extremes here.

      • OldSocialist

That sounds exactly like me asking for more beer.

    • DarnedNut

    Welcome Jeff!

    • Jack

      +1 Welcome!

I look forward to your posts :)

      • Jeff Rubenstein

thank you both! I look forward to being of service.

  • Chris

    Congrats Jeff!

    • Jeff Rubenstein

      thank you, sir.

  • Brian Ghattas

Still a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan, Jeff? You probably wanted a better record but 1st place in the NFC East isn’t bad after 2 bad years.

    • Jeff Rubenstein

Every year is a bad year when you’re a die-hard Eagles fan.
But playoffs would be nice ^___^

      • Dylan

With the NFC East the way it is, it doesn’t sound so crazy to think that Nick Foles and Chip Kelly could sneak in to the playoffs.

  • Jeff Rubenstein

    I’m ok with this.

  • MrRadiolips

Hey Jeff can you tell me if Microsoft is going to be making a gaming operating system to compete with SteamOS. Im sorry that im so pushy but welcome!! lol

    • MrRadiolips

Still think XboxOS would be an amazing idea for gamers and hope that Jeff can help push this.

      • Guest

        It’s called WINDOWS

        • MrRadiolips

Windows isnt made for PC gaming dumb a**. You obviously have know idea what i am talking about. Cant believe how many idiots are on this.

Nice to see you, Jeff. Make some magic happen. Or something.

  • Wisman Yen

    Welcome Jeff.

      Thank you, Wisman

  • KnoxSe7eN

Congratulations Jeff and I wish you the best of luck.

    • Jeff Rubenstein

      thank you!

  • slasaru

People have always been saying we need one more pubic person to Major’s team. Very nice!

    • OldSocialist

“Pubic person”? You might want to edit that post, mate.

      • slasaru

        Done that
        Please clean your stuff

  • Oliver Stabel

“Especially important to my decision to join the team is the way
Microsoft has demonstrated a willingness to listen to the community –
and act on what it hears – quite clearly as of late.”

Imho MS did not listen to the community, they listened to sale
forecasts. If they would had listened to the community, they would not
had designed the XB1 they way the presented it on E3 or the “reveal” event, because the community voiced their thoughts about “always on” and DRM way before the launch event. More examples: Gold and ads. The (gold!) community does not want ads in the dashboard because they already pay for the service. If MS listens to the community, why do we still have ads which slow down the dashboard? Or the non replaceable HD in the XB1. People want to exchange the HD, especially if you look at the size of the new games. I am struggling with the 320GB on the 360 and the games there are small compared to the new ones. Need more examples?

Were exactly do you think the MS listened to the community? Please shed a light.

    • OldSocialist

Ideally I would have preferred a 1TB internal drive upfront, but I suspect that would have tipped the box price into the unaffordable zone. As it stands, I’d rather keep the internal HDD I paid for and add external storage (available, let us not forget, to XBO but not PS4) than invalidate my warranty by opening the case, so the lack of facility to swap it out isn’t an issue.

      • Oliver Stabel

Why should this void the warranty? If designed properly you would not even need a screwdriver to change a HDD. Imho even changing the HDD on the PS3 did not void any guarantee. And what about the time after warranty is over? And it remains to be seen how an external HDD can be used with the XB1 (besides that the external HDD feature will not be available at launch afaik)

        • fastharryDOTcom

I’m thinking that SONY will have a proprietary upgrade memory that costs an arm and a leg….

        • OldSocialist

I’ve had warranty problems with a PVR manufacture because I replaced the HDD. Small print ruled.

I agree with you about replacing the HDD after warranty, but not everyone is tech savvy – in fact most people aren’t – and external solutions work well. USB seems fast enough on the 360.

          • Oliver Stabel

so why not offer both approaches (change internal HDD and use external HDD via USB) ?

          • OldSocialist

I dunno. It would make sense to me, but it appears they just don’t want their boxes opened up.

    • KesMonkey

“MS did not listen to the community, they listened to sale forecasts.”
Every time I read something along these lines, I face-palm.
There’s no practical distinction between the two. I’ll show you what I mean.

The community: “MS, many of us don’t like your XB1 policies, and will not buy the system.”
Sales forecast: “Sales will be poor because many consumers don’t like our XB1 policies, and will not buy the system.”

Like EVERY other for-profit company in the world, MS wants to make money.
Like EVERY other for-profit company in the world, the only way they can do that, is to offer us a product (or service) that we want to buy.

It really is so extraordinarily simple.

      • Oliver Stabel

read and understand what I wrote. I was apparent months before official reveal that people did not like the way things were going. MS should have been warned.
This would have been so extraodrinarily simple.

    • NarcoSleepy

I would avoid using “IMHO” in a post. At least on the internet, this comes across as anything but. To be clear, I am not saying you are or not, it’s just the perception.

I suspect that the price you pay for XBox Live Gold does not fully fund the service. I don’t have any insider knowledge on this, so I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am. Would you be so indignant if you had to pay $150-$200/yr for the privilege to play on the best gaming network in the world, just so you wouldn’t have to see some ads (which are *usually* relevant to your interests anyhow – on a side note, I WOULD like to have some ability to customize the types of ads that I see).

I do agree that the ads significantly ad overhead to the dashboard, and sometimes take a while to load, however, it doesn’t keep my other content from showing, so I can jump straight into whatever it was I got on the XBOX to do.

I also agree about the non-removable hard drive in XB1, but until I have the console in my hands, I will reserve my criticism… for now.

My primary beef with XBox Live Gold is the number of “free” services that are held hostage behind a paywall. I already pay for HBO GO and Netflix, why should I be forced to have a gold account just to access them? Microsoft has never come out, to my knowledge, and addressed WHY this is necessary. There may be a very valid reason for this, but by remaining quiet on the issue, the perception is that they are simply being greedy.

    • Nick Peck

“they would not had designed the XB1 they way the presented it on E3 or the “reveal” event,”

Considering when they do focus group after focus group and the people there say they like they idea…. well that’s why companies run with things. Not to mention, how does MS (or any company for that matter) know exactly what everyone wants? No matter what you do you will ALWAYS have some people on board and others that will complain, there is no way around it as it’s impossible to make everyone happy.

As for the ads, there’s one tiny ad on each screen tucked away in the corner that is ALWAYS unobtrusive no matter what you are doing. It’s never in the way or yelling at you to look at it, so why does that bother you so much? Oh let me guess, it doesn’t but you have to go with what the sony fantards complain about because you can’t make up your own argument.

They did listen on the HD thing, you will be able to use external HD’s full capacity, so what’s the issue? A 2TB USB 3.0 drive is dirt cheap and mine is ready for my movie / tv purchases along with being storage for finished games and the like. Sure a removable HD would be nice, but it’s not that big of a deal (they obviously have reasons why they don’t want to allow people access ie. look at the hack issues sony has had over the lifespan of the ps3).

You are just going buy the handful of blowhards that cry over everything and ignoring the millions of people that are fine with the way things are and don’t join every website on the internet to say how happy they are. Drop the hate and enjoy gaming instead of worrying about specs lol. You are doing it wrong.

  • Mik3t

‘’m also hoping they’ll let me play Titanfall.’ brilliant

At the interview ‘So Jeff what make to want to work fo rthe xbox team’, answer ‘I want to play titanfall’

    Welcome Jeff

  • Mitchell Hall

Congrats jeff ! Looking forward to seeing what you’ll be upto. I’m a die hard xbox fan and I love majors blog.

  • Arcona

    Jeffy Jeffy Jeff!

  • Anonymous

Oh so now you’re stealing Sony employees? Haha.

    • roozbeh, again

You should have said that when they hired Phil Harrison.

    • peba12

They think they can get everything for enough money..this is M$!

      • evilfangs .

Apart from a decent spec console! hooooooooo. Nah but I kid who cares about hardware in consoles.

        Welcome Jeff.

    • Guest

$0N¥ = NO DOLLARS, NO YEN. Too poor for sure.

  • roozbeh, again

Nice to meet you, virtually that is.

  • ZappyKins

Well, I’m a little relieved I don’t have to move up to Seattle. Would have been an interesting adventure. Congratulations Jeff!

  • Martin Davies

Jeff came to Xbox just for Titan Fall? What a Great guy ;)

  • fastharryDOTcom

Welcome to the team….I am hoping your agent negotiated a white ONE as a perk/signing bonus…..

  • DaeJim

Wow, that’s awesome. I really liked your activity towards the community at the Playstation Blog. I hope you’ll comment on community comments since that’s something that we’re missing on this blog! A big Welcome Jeff and good luck!

  • Liquidfx Xboxdude

if you can’t beat em’ hire em’

  • Guest

Wow, Xbox is expanding at such a fast rate, $0N¥ will never be able to keep up.

    • evilfangs .

Microsoft won the battle when they hired Jonathan Ross to be a executive producer on Xbox one games. /end sarcasm.

Maybe only UK people know who Jonathan Ross is so will understand.

      • Guest

I’m LOLing hard at the reviews of the PS4 right now. It’s getting destroyed. Knack is getting 3-4/10′s. KZSF around 7 and many are saying don’t buy the PS4 yet, like Kotaku. It’s absolute LOLZORS!
$0N¥ = lies, overhype and undereliver.

        • evilfangs .

I’m sure the launch titles for Xbox one will get destroyed too. Both systems aren’t as good as people hyped them up to be, but I’m still getting them.

          • Nick Peck

People expect way to much on day one of everything and FORGET that products like this need time to mature over a several year span (like EVERY other console launch in history).

Things take time but people are impatient and always demand instant results / gratification.

        • ElektroDragon

And I’m loling hard at your 720p box. Stop being a fanboy troll and just buy both consoles like me. Yes, I’m still getting an X1, but I have no juvenile delusions over which system is more powerful.

          • Nick Peck

Again, why are you even on this site? If you don’t like it just leave already. I don’t get people like you lol. Power has NOTHING to do with it. You can have all of the power you want but with no good software to run on it said power is worthless.

          • ElektroDragon

Fool, clearly you did not bother to read MY ENTIRE COMMENT. You know, the part where I’m still getting an X1 next week? That’s why I’m here.

          • OldSocialist

Buy both boxes? You and I may be able to afford them, but for many the price of a console is the biggest investment they’ll make this year, and they have to make sure they’ve chosen what’s right for them.

For myself, I prefer the Microsoft ecosystem (love watching those gamer points stack up), I think the technological advances of the XBO have been underrated, and often deliberately so, and I’ll be waiting to buy a PS4 until there’s actually something I want to play on it.

      • roozbeh, again

        Poow woss.

  • CDMAss

Jeff, Please teach MS how to run the business. They are lost.

    • Guest

LOL, MS is not the one crashing on the stock market, like $0N¥…I think Jeff will be doing just fine now. Welcome to the Xbox family Jeff!

      • ElektroDragon

If you actually had a CLUE about the stock market you’d know Sony stock has been up almost 100% in the past year.

        • Nick Peck

MS is doing just fine, last time I looked they were hovering around the 270b mark and sony was around 25b. I’m sure they are booth doing just fine in the market.

          • Guest

$0N¥ at 18B and dropping again and their liabilities (almost the net Worth of all their assets) are climbing again.

        • roozbeh, again

And Microsoft’s stock haven’t been this high since… 2004 something?

  • Guest

It’s not too hard when coming from Sony.

  • xbox_gamer

Welcome, I still have ps3 and read your blog all the time , so congrats on that it was a huge following. hope all goes well for you here

    • xbox_gamer

Lol nice down vote for some one respected in the business. Think He doesnt have a ps3 just because you don’t like good games , you like a system. well he does have a ps3. get over it and who cares

      • evilfangs .

Been major downvotes in this blog, might be Sony fans who heard the news about Jeff and came here.

        • xbox_gamer

funny Jeff was saying good bye nov 9th and politely wouldn’t say where he was going, stand up person that can give great insight here. I Like games and if I like it on 3ds,wiiu,ps3 or xbox who cares.

          • xbox_gamer

If one of these systems where sold to another, Nin. sold to Ms for example, then people would do a 180 and say wow thats great mario on my xbox or ps3,. ps4, xbox1 or apple.

    • Jeff Rubenstein

      Thanks for the kind sentiments.

  • ElektroDragon

Well congrats! I hope you actually bring this blog up to par with your great work on the PS Blog.

    • Jeff Rubenstein

It’s too soon to say what changes may come, but I’ll definitely be helping extend Major’s reach.

  • Nick Peck

Great to have you on the team :)

    • Jeff Rubenstein

  • asbofive

Wow, M$ just keeps lapping up Sonys sloppy seconds!!

    • Guest

Too bad for you Ph0n3yz, he’s not a sloppy second. You lost another good bloke going to the right side.

  • Some guy

Will you be able to make some changes for the insulting Deal of the week and Games With Gold and the broken xbox website? Well anyway, good luck being on the frontline.

  • Karl Cramer

Welcome aboard. Tiny nagging voice in the back of my mind is wondering if this is paving the way for Larry’s exit. I really, truly hope not but I can see that.

    • Jeff Rubenstein

Hardly, I’m happy to be joining Larry’s team.

  • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

    great news

  • roozbeh, again

    Doesn’t Microsoft own the IP?

I’ve been asking for that since 2007, I weep for Shenmue 3 or any shenmue really

  • Jrocker23

    Welcome aboard Jeff. Good luck

  • Guest

Why should we care about a $0N¥ Pauperfanboy like you? WE DON’T! CYA!
