Xbox One Tips and Tricks

Now that Xbox One has launched, you’ve probably noticed there is a lot to discover about the console. In this video, I thought I’d show you some quick tips that you may find useful. What are your tips? Leave them in the comment section below and maybe we’ll use it in a future video.

Xbox One By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

  • roozbeh, again

I think the most useful thing would be a list of all apps that you can snap. To my understanding not all apps can be snapped.

    • evilfangs .

      “Xbox snap”

TV, Party, Eurosport player, Skydrive, Crackle, Twitch, Xbox video, Xbox music, 4OD, Machinima, Game DVR, Activity, IE.

Those are the apps I can snap, but I don’t have every app installed like for example, Netflix might be able to be snapped.

      • Dragonborn

I really want a Twitter app that could snap and automatically refreshes. That would be awesome.

        • Nick Peck

Oh I’m sure that’s in the works already haha. Even though I hate twitter and FB personally, but I have no doubt they will both be out pretty soon.

      • EldritchWarlord

You can snap Netflix, but it doesn’t let you do anything except “go to fullscreen.”
I believe there’s an icon in the upper right of the app tile which indicates if an app must be fullscreen or snapped (absent if either is allowed).

        • BlinkFandango

You have to start the movie in full screen and then you can snap it, a little awkward, but not terrible.

    • Technobeatdown

Yeah, just saying Xbox snap brings up that list

  • Marco Acunzo

    Peggle 2 D:

    • Dragonborn

So excited! And it is cheap as well, only $12 here in NA!

  • Anonymous

#stop making us have to use kinect to do stuff
millions of us have it unplugged
drop the ugly windows 8 theme bring back blades from the 1st 360

    • evilfangs .

You don’t have to use it, the controller can do everything the Kinect can do.

      • StormRaging

How do you snap with just the controller? Hitting the middle button just closes the game. I still kinda want a mini guide back.

        • evilfangs .

Snap feature is on the right on the dashboard. Just about the my games and apps.

          • StormRaging

so to use the controller if you are already in a game you have to go to the dashboard then open up snap?

          • evilfangs .

The game pauses anyway when you hit the dashboard button and as soon as you hit the snap button the screen goes back to your game. It takes a max of 3 seconds if that to go from your game snap and then back to playing.

          • Fred Bloggs

You can double click the Xbox button to swap between snap app and main app

          • EldritchWarlord

Couldn’t be simpler unless the controller had a “snap” button. Press the Xbox button, select snap (it’s one tile to the right), find the app you want snap in the list and voila.

        • Fingleberries

Hit the Xbox button > browse to the app > click menu button before launching the App and select “Snap” from the menu.
          or “Xbox, Snap “.
          I know which I prefer… :)

          • Alphapapa

There is also the Snap option on the Home Screen that lets you choose snap able apps. If you have an app snapped that same selection changes into an unsnap option.

    • Technobeatdown

Don’t speak for others. I love the kinect functions

      • paul rolland

Right back at you, Just because you love it dose not mean it should be the only way to use the UI

        • Technobeatdown

Didn’t say it was. He said millions have it unplugged…. That’s the part I doubted

        • Oliver King

Its not the only way to use the UI, you can use voice or a controller & its completely optional .

It helps to own an X1 to know these things.

        • Nick Peck

Sounds like someone hasn’t even used the system yet lol. It’s every easy to fly around via the controller.

    • Dragonborn

You are not forced to use it. Also, why would you not want to use it? It is an integral part of the system and at least for me personally one of the reasons I enjoy my Xbox one so much. And you are wrong, millions do not have it unplugged, I would suppose barely any actually. You can do everything with the controller anyway so I don’t see why you are complaining.

    • eboy71

“Millions”? Not quite sure where that number is coming from, but whatever. Myself, I’m really enjoying it. Walking into my tv room and having my entire system fire up and be automatically logged-in seconds after saying “XBox On” is still a really cool experience. I haven’t really found a use for gesture commands, but the voice commands are gold.

    • tigertomspill

my issue from what i have seen is that it should be just as easy to find something with controller as it is with kinect. It makes me seem the use kinect voice commands to fix a horrible UI, 360 was done right so why change it unless there was some way to make it better or easier….

    • Nick Peck

Any many more millions of us love the Win8 simplicity and look, and love using voice commands via Kinect. Enjoy.

  • http://realotakugamer.com/ Michael

Very informative video. I hope more like it are on the way.

  • Dan

Something that I’ve found really useful is to use the ‘favorites’ section in your friends list. Makes keeping track of what people are up to – and inviting them into your games – much, much easier. The favorites list is also present when you snap activity, too.

  • Andy

Out of interest… why is the shoulder button swapping from Pins to Home to Store so jerky? Other things spin in and out smooth as you like, but on mine (UK, 1080p@60hz) that particular operation is jerky as hell…

    • Anonymous

Microsoft only beta tested the Xbone in US and forgot about EU

  • JuanCabrera

View and Menu are dumb button names. And they are hard to differentiate between sometimes on screens. Start and Back were fine and the forward/back triangles were easier to distinguish between.

    • EldritchWarlord

How are three horizontal lines and a square on top of another square hard to distinguish?

      • JuanCabrera

Compared to blue, red, yellow, green, or Y, X, A, B.

        • EldritchWarlord

A and B are just as similar, so are X and Y. I suppose they would be more distinct if they were different colors, however Start and Back were not differently colored and they’re what you are comparing Menu and View to.

  • TonyLN

“Xbox Select” — Had no idea about this. Very useful, was pissing me off in Netflix… I kept going “Xbox Netflix” to bring up the menu — it worked… But not what I wanted.

  • http://www.thebiglistofpubs.com/ Bibowski

My TV doesn’t seem to be connected to the entire ‘xbox on’ command. My receiver is though… how do I go back into that initial setup to get everything connected?

    • iSoar

It’s under settings and then the TV one guide preferences I believe.

  • Anonymous

1080p Gamerpic 1080p Skype 1080p Netflix but only 720p Games? are you forgetting who made the Xbox brand us gamers stop giving us 720p we had that all of last gen

    • EldritchWarlord

There were very few 7th gen games that were native 720p. The consoles all did upconversion to 720p.
Much like how 8th gen consoles are doing upconversion to 1080p.

      • ElektroDragon

Yeah except if you have a PS4 where no upconversion is needed. I have both next gen consoles (not counting the Wii U which I also have), but let’s not kid ourselves here. PS4 has more AAA 1080p games.

        • uxo22

          Anyway

        • Mqf

What are they? Knack? Killzone? And…..

          • Dylan

Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty are ones off the top of my head that run at a better native resolution.

          • kevgallacher

Call of duty has framerate issues on PS4.
I wish this 1080p debate would stop. It won’t matter in 6 months, when games will be achieving 1080p easily.

          • Dylan

I haven’t noticed an issues. But for arguments sake, which is more troubling?

Call of Duty running 1080 and not a stable 60 FPS, dipping to maybe 40-50?
            Or
Dead Rising 3, running in 720, and dipping to 16-20 FPS.

The problem is, is that people have been screaming about the lack of technological advance in this gen.
Microsoft REPEATEDLY refused to release the specs for months.

I’m not so sure we’ll be seeing full 1080 on every game this gen. Even with better optimization.

          • roozbeh, again

“Call of Duty running 1080 and not a stable 60 FPS, dipping to maybe 40-50?
            Or
Dead Rising 3, running in 720, and dipping to 16-20 FPS.”

Totally different games. One uses all it’s resources for dog and fishes and the other has a few thousand zombies on screen and is an open world game.

Although I agree about the lack of technological advancement in this gen, especially from Microsoft.

        • roozbeh, again

The Wii U has more AAA 1080p games than both of these consoles.

I find that even more shocking.

          • iSoar

1080p means nothing. You can make ugly games at 1080p and you can make beautiful games at 720p. You can make crappy games at 1080p and great gams at 480i. It does not matter as long as the games are good and run smoothly. This is a straw man issue so Sony fans can (and now Nintendo fans) can argue superiority. It means nothing. Games mean everything.

        • Nick Peck

Killzone / Knack.. those are the only Sony games, the rest is from indies and 3rd parties. Also, does 1080p make the game more enjoyable? No, and honestly, who even cares? Funny how Ryse is 900 converted to 1080p and looks better than all of sonys 1080p native games so far. But enjoy anyways :D

        • iSoar

          1080 means nothing.

    • http://tmazon.com/ Tony

Forza 5 and NBA 2K14 are both 1080p native. It depends on the developers, but the console is certainly capable of native 1080p at 60fps.

    • iSoar

      Go away.

  • Ash9

My big question is, will we be getting the user default settings back? I already miss having the games know I want invert sticks, and manual transmission on by default when I start up a new game. I had actually forgotten that was a feature in the 360 since I set it up so long ago. Then I played my first few One games and had to change the settings for every game I loaded up.

    • iSoar

I agree. I play games inverted too and in a game like AC4 had to change the controls in 3 different areas. I haven’t had to do this in years. I guess the bigger question I have is, did the people designing Xbox One even look at the Xbox 360? Not saying this in a crappy way, but there are just some great, simple, quick features that made the 360 amazing and super quick to navigate. For all the great things that are in the Xbox One, there is no doubt that they took a step backward on chat (why does it take so long to start up? why is party chat not “on” as a default, why does it take so long to pull up my list of friends to invite someone, why do their headsets kick out and go through Kinect?). Also, Achievement – are way to cumbersome. There needs to be overall preference settings as discussed. And the menu (start) or window (select) button should just bring up the mini-blades system like the xbox 360 guide button does now, for quick navigaton. Because that is the thing most sorely missed is a quick navigation system to quickly chat, listen to music (still can’t find the dlna stuff), check achievements (without leaving the game), check downloads, etc.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the system and I know it will continue to improve and evolve. I just believe these are the basic issues that need to be addressed sooner than later.

      • Kevin Jones

        i totally agree with u 110% isoar

        • iSoar

Thanks. Trying to be constructive. Nothing is worse than the Sony fanboys that don’t seem to have any games to play or something, griefing every forum that has to do with Xbox One. It will get better, no doubt in my mind and there is lots to love about it now.

          • Nick Peck

I agree and like both comments you made! Again, that’s what needs to be done, constructive criticism. MS will only what people want when they have level headed people making suggestions instead of the usual swearing moron thinking he can build and program better than the pros.

Much like you said, I agree but I know that as time goes on I think they will address much of this in updates as they did with the 360. They really need to get it out into the wild to see how people use it before they can really understand the changes / quality of life changes that should / could be done.

However, it’s a fantastic start and I love the overall functionality, but much like Win8, the XBO needs it’s Win8.1 update to tidy things up down the road.

    • Spargo CXVII

      Agree!!!!!

    • Nick Peck

Yah this is the one thing that I’m pretty annoyed that isn’t there. That was one of my most favorite options on the 360, set it and forget it. I HATE starting up a game and I end up staring at the floor / sky and thinking “dang it, go into options and invert”….

Not a total downer, but I REALLY want this option back. I always mean to state this and forget about it so thanks for mentioning it. Loving the system so far though, total blast and money well spent.

  • roozbeh, again

Another question here, can you make the tiles smaller, like windows 8.1?

    • Death Dealer

I’d like this too, with the different tile sizes.

  • Spargo CXVII

“Xbox Eject Disk” is this a possibility???

    • Liquidfx Xboxdude

yep, just say xbox on. it works for me.

    • uxo22

Seriously, why is that necessary? If you are going to walk up to the console to remove the disk, why not just press the button while standing there?

      • Spargo CXVII

So I don’t have to push the button. No worries I’m sure you will still be able to push the button. Don’t Hate!!!! Hater!!!

        • evilfangs .

Push a button on your controller or the button on front of your console to eject the disc. Seems pointless to me. I mean if you’re going to eject your disc you’re going to take the disc out and maybe put another one in so the eject button on the console seems fine to me.

        • uxo22

Sorry, wasn’t hating. Just figured that if your lazy butt had to get the disk you could hit the button while standing there. That’s all

  • tigertomspill

The UI still needs a lot of fixing….

  • therealsod

“Xbox On” only works for me about 20% of the time, so I’m standing there saying it 5 or 6 times before it works. Anyone have any tips on getting this more reliably? “Xbox Off” works first time every time.

    • Ivanx360xpira

I noticed that too…other commands work great, with several different types of voice intonations…like “Xbox go home” or “xbox snap”, they ALWAYS work. But I´m only able to use “xbox on” with a very specific voice intonation as well “xbox unsnap”…don´t know why, even for me that english is not my native language is very simple to say “Xbox on” correctly…

      • Chris Breseman

I’ve had some real issues with ‘XBox, On.’ So much so, that I’ve quit saying it. Everything else seems to work great though. So great that while viewing this video that I paused Netflix while viewing it. When Major Nelson said ‘XBox, Back’ it quit viewing my video and went back to my video selection screen in Netflix.

        • iSoar

I have learned not to pause between the words when I say Xbox On. That seems to work well for me. Typically works first time, but never more than 2 times.

      • Kaiju of the Grotto

Xbox On works on the 3rd or 4th try for me, when i’m in front of the system. everything else seems fine… except before knowing skype couldn’t be snapped, XBOX SNAP SKYPE would ALWAYS bring up snap skydrive…. no matter what.

      • uxo22

Every now a then I have to repeat a command, but for the most part all commands work for me. Including xbox on and xbox turn off.

    • Edward Bass

Same for me….all other “Xbox….” commands seem to work fine.

    • Ivanx360xpira

well, just did a little experiment now and I got success most of times. I was in front of the system and said “xbox, (pause 1sec) on” a little louder than my normal voice level…

  • trickbfc1988

The commands are good the only command that seems hard to work for me is xbox record that. Major what are the chances of being able to view recent players in the future? I find this quite disapointing and not being able to send voice messages aswell is a shame, and I think the party system needs some changes other than this I am finding the console really enjoyable.

    • BoA Wrath

Agree why when I invite a friend to party chat do I then need to press an option to turn on chat? Shouldn’t it enabled by default with an option to end chat but stay in party if I leave for dinner or something. Seems a bit confused and needs some attention. It should be seem less and its not.

    • Alphapapa

I too have been looking for the recent players section for my online gaming to leave reviews and message them. Is it hiding somewhere?

  • CDMAss

This is so not user friendly.

  • smokedupdroid

The settings screen is a jumbled mess and does not give complete control to the user. The settings are basic at best. One of the weirdest things is that the settings for “Xbox on” and “Xbox turn off” are in two completely different screens. Why? That makes no sense. Also, I’m having an issue getting the Xbox to realize where to control the volume. I have set up the video with HDMI to TV and the audio is optical to my stereo receiver. But every time I try to control the volume via voice, it just says “go set up TV in the settings menu” which I have already done. It’s weird, it’s like it’s confused on where the audio should go but yet the sound functions fine through the stereo. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • smokedupdroid

Not sure why someone down voted my comment. I was simply describing something that is frustrating me about the new system. Aside from the issue described, I absolutely love the Xbox One. If I could get this one thing solved I would be even happier. How about instead of down voting me you actually provide some assistance in the form of a comment?

    • Nick Peck

Welcome to a new product launch. they will add, update and fix stuff as time goes on. just be patient.

    • Alphapapa

If you go to Settings > TV there is a third space that gets skipped in the initial setup to program an audio receiver.

      • smokedupdroid

Thanks for the suggestion, however, I have done that. I was able to find my receiver in the list. So my TV, Cable Box, and Receiver are all set up correctly and were all recognized. I have also set the audio settings in the Sound menu to not use the HDMI for audio but to use the Optical for audio. So as far as I can tell I have everything setup correctly to be able to control the volume on the receiver. But I still have the volume problem. It still says “go to settings to set up TV” anytime I try to adjust the volume.

  • Chris Breseman

I LOVE the ability to switch back and forth from the menu and the game I’m playing. I use that a ton when I see an achievement pop up and I want to know what it was for.

It’s nice that we can view Blu-Ray’s in the XBox finally.

I wish that we could view how much HDD space we are using quickly and easily. I did a rough count of the HDD space I am using last night and I am already up to 100.7 GB of HDD usage. That concerns me because if we only have 500 GB of HDD space, and I’m already using 1/5th of it without any music or videos, what happens when I run out of space? Some of these games are using 30+ GB of space. I’m not a big fan of digital downloads for games because I can’t trade them in if I don’t like them. So that part isn’t a worry. However eventually I will run out of room on my HDD, and I fear that’ll be sooner rather than later if I keep getting games and installing them. And because the installs take some time I’m reluctant to uninstall them unless I am confident I am not going to pick that particular game up in some time. An example would be: I’ve gone through RYSE twice now, a 3rd time doesn’t appeal to me, nor does the MP. I doubt I pick it back up to play unless more SP comes out, which isn’t likely. So it got uninstalled to save roughly 16 – 20 GB. So when is the ability to use external HDD space coming? Hopefully sooner rather than later. I would hate to have to decide what I want on the HDD and what I don’t, especially if I plan on picking those games up again because of the install times.

I love the increased ability of the Kinect. Kinect v1.0 didn’t recognize me sitting in my chair about 6 to 8 feet away. Kinect v2.0 has no issues picking me up in my chair and the rest of my living room. And the detailing of what it picks up is 100% better too. Here’s to hoping that developers pick up on the increased abilities of the Kinect and start to really push boundaries with it in gaming rather than let it languish as a side voice command, platform gaming and worst of all; workout gaming feature.

  • Jorge Garza

Major, I would really appreciate if you can share a kinect voice command list for other languages. My console is set to spanish, and kinect works really good, but I don´t know all the voice commands. Also, it looks like the “Xbox On” command doesn´t work in spanish (I mean, saying the actual translated sentence).

We also need a way to manage storage, a way to appear “offline” , and Dolby Surround Sound! The party chat is buggy, and there is no way to get into a “private chat” without going into a party. Also, finding an online match in some games is confusing.

We need voice messages, and I would love to have the ability to hear and send voice messages to my Xbox 360´s friends. We aaaaalso need notifications when friends go online.

I am in love with Forza Motorsport 5, seriously, in love, but there is so much room for improvement with the dashboard. It is not as simple and useful as the Xbox 360´s dashboard.

…oh, almost forgot, Where are the recent players? How can I file a complaint? Since you are promoting a brand new reputation system, I would like to use it.

    • David Do0M

To appear offline, go to “my profile” and the top option is “appear offline.” As far as a private chat, simply set your party to “require invite” and only invite one person, or just use Skype. Simple enough.

However, I do strongly agree with everything else you mentioned. Especially about voice messages and notification when friends come online.

      • Jorge Garza

Sometimes I am in a group (party chat) and I want to chat a little bit with another friend in private who is not in the party, and I don´t like to actually leave the party, create a new one, invite my other friend, chat a little and then go back with my other group of friends.

Yeah, Skype works too, but I guess I could also call him, or send him a voice message on whatsapp. Simple, but not convenient.

Thank you for the tip about going offline, I will give it a shot.

        Cheers.

  • ElektroDragon

How about a tip on how you can prevent Killer Instinct from instantly signing out the current player and signing in the wrong person at random, thus destroying the player’s game, if Kinect Auto Sign in is turned on??? Happened to me and MANY others and only solution is turn OFF Kinect Auto Sign in which leaves you with NO Auto Sign On option for the console. FAIL MS. Fix this now.

    • Anonymous

Simple unplug the Kinect it wastes 10% of the GPU power so 720p with the Kinect plugged in and you get 1080p if it’s unplugged

      • ElektroDragon

LOLOLOL. Ahahahahaha!!! Good one. If only that were true about getting 1080p with it unplugged. Nice way to mix truth with lies to bait clueless people. But I’m a tech god, sorry.

        • Riddick Snipes

          Ur a tech god huh….. so I take it u have a ps4.

          • Nick Peck

I’ll get one when there are games worth buying. next Christmas sounds good.

      • evilfangs .

That’s not how it works you idiot.

  • uxo22

A feature I would like to see, is Kinect chat automatically toggles off when I plug in a headset. Then toggle on when no headset is detected.

    • Jorge Garza

Actually, it does exactly that, doesn´t it?

      • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

i also thought it was doing that already

    • uxo22

Sweet, I hope you eight, last time I play, my voice was coming through Kinect. I’ll check it again, thanks guys.

      • mdsmash

You can also turn off the using the kinect as a microphone, in settings. It’s worth doing.

        • uxo22

I like using Kinect as the microphone when I an using Skype or something to that nature. I just would hope that when I plug in a headset while play online games that Kinect mic automatically mutes, sound transfers to the head until the mic is removed.
They said it already does it, so Ill try it again.

  • WARLORD

The thing I wont to know is why the Kinect was forced on use???? From the beginning we were told the xbox one would not work with out it and now that I have one I find out it works just fine with out it…

    • evilfangs .

Because the Kinect polices got reserved but Microsoft couldn’t afford to not have us buy the Kinect.

      • WARLORD

LOL thy would of sold a lot more if thy just removed it and sold the xbox one at a lower price point…

        • Nick Peck

The xbo is selling just fine. if you don’t like it, leave as we are sick of the stupid comments.

          • WARLORD

NO one said it was selling bad…. and i love my xbox one….. as for my comments being stupid?? how so???? Before the xbox one came out there were a lot of people mad about the mandatory Kinect and MS told us it would not work with out it we had to have it….. And a lot the people said thy would not get a xbox one until the xbox dropped in price and thy lost the Kinect… thous are sales lost…

        • evilfangs .

Sold more consoles maybe, but lost millions on wasted research and development and cost of each Kinect made, not to mention stock value and stock holders thinking Microsoft don’t have the confidence in their own product.

          • WARLORD

Not really.. Thy could of sold it like thy did on the 360. One with $499 one with out $399 and sold the Kinect separate…

    • StudioMultimédia Gon’Interacti

my 2 cents is that kinect 1 was commercialy a HUGE success and it got great sales. But, they never couldn’t really achieve anything awesome in the gaming world because they couldn’t convince developpers to do stuff for hardware that not everyone own.
Not that everyone own it, the potential is far more interesting to us, gamers, no matter if we like it or not. I personnally like the kinect and appreciate the update from kinect 1. The developpement of kinect 1 certainly cost a lot and it is only logic to benefit from that research with kinect 2.

from a community stand point, the kinect 1 got hack is so many crazy and interesting way that i am very happy to see a kinect 2

    • Riddick Snipes

      Just fine and better.

    • mdsmash

This is simply, better for developers. To know that it is always present, means they can code functionality into it without having the situation where its not there. It’s always better for developers to have a definitive list of hardware always present.

  • EldritchWarlord

Getting booted back to the dashboard occurs when the game hangs or crashes, that’s the developer’s fault not Microsoft’s. At any rate I think it’s better than the whole console requiring a restart.
Party chat has some server-side instabilities but it works fairly consistently for me. You or whoever you’re trying to chat with may have some network issues (restrictive NAT most likely).
I do hope Microsoft implements Kinect ignoring audio from the console’s audio output. However you could get directional speakers pointed away from the Kinect to mitigate the issue.

  • slider2nl

They could add a button extra on the controller for snapping and sharing. there is enough room for it between te back and start buttons instead of 2 you got 3 little buttons: back/switch – snap/share – start/menu, why didnt they consider this when designing the ui and hardware?

  • ae69ae

I was wondering the same thing. They should make it so if you’re pressing to the Right+Xbox Button it switches to the right. If you’re pressing Left+Xbox Button it switching or snaps to the Left. Simple programming. Hopefully they implement my technique and give me some money :)

  • Riddick Snipes

Funny how the article is about how to discover things on the 1 when the truth is people are concerned that their is next to nothing to discover. No private chat. No surround sound. No text msg to 360 owners. Everything under apps. No Xbox on command for oz. I could go on and on but I won’t right now. Also if someone could give me a valid reason why oz gets no Xbox on command I’d love 2 hear it. Also no volume commands or turn on TV capability.

    • Guest

I should have waited to buy my XBOX ONE the UI/OS has more bugs in it , than cockroaches living in old apartment buildings. I’m loving the PS 4 right now. It’s not a greedy suck every dime from you gaming machine, like the get nothing in return XBOX ONE !

      • iSoar

Yeah, sure. Sony just gives you stuff for free. I have a PS3 and will purchase a PS4 when Uncharted is released. Do you remember in Uncharted 2 and 3 when you had to enter a code to play online? And if your friend or family member wanted to play on their account they had to buy another code for $10 or $15? Well, I do.

        • mdsmash

I just feel so privileged also, that he had to come to an Xbox blog to tell us all about the PS4. I mean it would almost seem as though he has nothing better to do with his time, maybe the PS4 isn’t keeping his attention…

    • iSoar

You can have the Xbox One adjust your tv or receiver volume. Once set up it can turn everything on or off and you can say “Xbox, volume up” or volume down or mute/unmute. I have surround sound too. So I am not sure what you are really talking about on those issues.

      • Riddick Snipes

Hey genius I’m in oz and all those features have been disabled over here. Google it and believe it!. Anyone got a good reason yet for no Xbox on command in oz? Didn’t think so.

        • iSoar

Thanks for acknowledging my high iq. Are there still Lions and Tigers and Bears in Oz?

          • Riddick Snipes

Yes there are…. but their upscaled to 1080p.

          • iSoar

            Couldn’t tell the difference.

        • PawnSacrifices

I live in Australia too & other than the voice command to turn it on and off I found everything is there.
My X1 even detected my surround system as it clearly says 7.2 Dolby in the audio output in the system info.

          • iSoar

            Fancy that.

          • Riddick Snipes

Do u get surround from both the HDMI and optical?

  • Jamie

the ui is ok, but it still seems confusing. i can imagine that new users get frustrated when voice commands don’t register. plus having to specifically remember what command does a certain function can be annoying.

i’ve briefly tested voice control on a friend’s xo and after a few times having to repeat a voice command, i just give up and use the controller.

    • Nick Peck

Voice commands work great, don’t fault the system for you not wanting to take some time to learn. Once you learn your way around its great and really easy. They will tighten things up here and there obviously, but its fast and easy so far and will only get better with time.

Do you guys realize that most of the features you love on the 360 were added via updates over its entire lifetime??? just be patient.

  • Morten Daugaard

Is it by any means possible to play local content from a NAS server, this is possible with x360 – if possible, i just can’t figure out how – please let me know… if not possible will this feature return patched ?

    • EldritchWarlord

Xbox One is a DLNA receiver but it cannot fetch content itself. I believe MS is working on that feature though.
There are programs that will let you fetch content from one device and push it to another which you can look into for the time being.

      • Morten Daugaard

Thanks for clearing this one up, until there’s a solution, i’ll give my 360′ a spin when i need to watch content from my NAS server..

        • yassine db

Try using the apps on your mobile gadgets to send videos from your NAS servers to the Xbox One, its fun…. more like a remote control for your media files
on android: playTo Lite, aVia, Skifta
on windows 8/RT/phone: nearly all media players (multimedia 8, pressPlay, native media player)

          • Morten Daugaard

I think i’ll settle with the x360 solution until xbox one gets this feature… it fits me much better to browse my NAS server than on a tiny mobile screen ;)

  • Riddick Snipes

Thankyou. That’s what I meant to say. A 15 year old format that the 360 shipped with.

  • Eric

First I would like to congradulate everyone who was involved in the launch and development of the console, you guys have done a great job!

I love the console for many reasons but Ive been enjoying most the beautiful links between my devices. Weather its DNLA, PushTo or Skydrive its been great.

Right now I have my skybox connected to my PVR which is USB to my PC, I then remote into my PC with my Tablet which is HDMI to the Xbox One.

It is beautiful, every PC application, every android app and every TV channel that I have all available on one screen and snappable is just incredible and extreamly useful.

That would be my device insight, but I do also have a more serious tip in regards to network and Xbox live connectivity.

I like most who had the 360 for its entire lifetime ( day one 360 ).
Didnt have the blessings of great bandwidth in the early days of the 360 and had a family who also enjoyed the internet.
So I optimised my network to treat the 360 like it was a god on my home network, deservedly so I’d like too add!

So now Ive great bandwidth and upon arriving home day one with my new console I wasnt expecting any connection issues because I had everything optimised right?

But I did have issues, even with my awesome bandwidth and super consistent really low ping times..

Weather it was connecting to a 1v1 in seasons or clubs on fifa or weather it was just connecting to partys, I had issues!

Before I let frustration get the better of me I decided to be sure of where the issue came from, lots of people online with similar issues it must be Xbox Live right ?

Blaming Xbox live didnt slove a thing for me so I got down and dirty and took it into my own hands.

First thing I realised was my optimisations where all focused on my 360 ok my fault I’ll fix that which I did but still had issues..

Before I got too puzzeled I questioned my online buddy’s who got the Xbox One to find out who had the issues and how where they configured..

The issues and configurations where quite different for everyone, so this wasnt helping process of elimination troubleshooting.

So I decided to start fresh under the assumption we had all over configured our home networks.

To the router I went and factory reset is what I done and to save time messing with new configurations I just turned off my firewall..

Test time , I loaded up fifa tried a 1v1 and it worked … No issues with party’s either, time to see if it worked for my friends and it did!

    We could play clubs, awesome!

So in short, remember you may have spent 8 years optimising for the 360 but it may have left your router confused using the Xbox One.

Factory reset taking notes if needed to get connected again and if your NAT shows as moderate or strict after that just turn off your firewall untill you figure the best setting for your new device on your network.

I hope my tip for getting TV,PC and tablet connected to the Xbox One is enjoyed and for anyone having network issues I also hope what has helped me helps you!

    IrishmanEric

    I will only play One

  • milesdp5

So when will I be able to auto login without Kinect?

    • Guest

      Already can…

  • Tyrone Crosby

When are we gonna get more apps on Xbox One, be able to watch movies with friends on xbox live like before on 360 using Netflix on Xbox One cause I really liked that and I want Xbox to bring that back, when is there gonna be arcade games, demos, and on the xbox one home where the feature area is when is that gonna change for gamers who done had their xbox one since it release and what happen to themes cause I like having some type of picture or theme of my choosing? The headset for xbox one isn’t really good I know some gamers maybe hearing impaired so they may have trouble hearing through chat so I think it needs to be a louder then it is.

    • evilfangs .

No such thing as arcade games anymore, they’re just called downloadable games.

They’re some demos but not a lot at the moment, the only demos available at the moment are Fifa 14, NBA 14, Zoo Tycoon and Kinect sports rivals.

Apps will come as soon as the legal stuff is finished.

You can buy X1 headsets and I think some companies are still trying to make an adapter for our 360 headsets to work on X1.

      • Nick Peck

What evil said. You guys need to realize the system is only a few weeks old and there is a ton of other things going on behind the scenes. I think everyone is so used to having everything on the 360 that you forget all of that wasn’t always there. Everything the 360 has now was added over many, many years.

It will take time but rest assured everything you want will be there (hopefully sooner rather than later). It takes time to get things going full steam on a new platform. The problem is, is that people aren’t happy with a few games anymore and eat through content at record speeds (and is kind of annoying as people just complain about everything all of the time now a days).

Just chill out, stuff will be getting added constantly :)

  • Andy

Hmm… Will give that a go. I admit, when I first noticed it I was almost certain it hadn’t always been that way. It sure reeks, so maybe that’ll sort it. Poor coding from MS if so. Background-app interfering, would be my guess…

  • Eric Jones

For me, I have two early complaints. The first is tracking achievements. On the 360, I could quickly pull up the game-specific achievement list for whatever game I was playing, and just by browsing the list could see what I had and hadn’t accomplished. On the Xbox One this seems much more difficult. The Achievement app provides a list of recent achievements but you have to click on each one to see what it was for (despite the fact that it takes up nearly the entire screen with a picture so you could easily put text on top of that). Next would be the Friends app. It just doesn’t seem as simple as it was on the 360 to figure out who is online and what they are doing right now since the “friends” app just seems to list changes in activity so the most recent 10 entries could be from one friend. Maybe I just haven’t explore the activity feed or something, but bringing up an actual list of current online friends and their current activity shouldn’t be so hard.

  • BrianL

So what’s with the down voting? I only answered a question with correct information! Microsoft has indicated Dolby will make its way to the system. However, as is, the system supports the aforementioned output formats.
All this is likely due to OS regressions made in the wake of ‘The Big No’ the gaming community unleashed on Microsoft. To make changes so extensive, you have to essentially go back some squares, kinda like a ‘back to square one’ (so to speak) and during those changes, you made end up cutting other components and having to restore them at another point.

  • tenbob1972

hi just want to say a few words first of all the xb1 is a amazing device and every thing that i hope it to be.
that’s said my Kinect died with in two hours of being plugged in.

fair play to Microsoft though ,i phoned them and they were so helpful and sorted me a replacement within a few days.

in the few days that it took for the Kinect to turn up i carried using the system and at that point i could not see the point of the having the Kinect as most every thing i could do on the controller.

aways it’s turned up and here are my few thoughts first of all it does not work very well in my small flat in fact i only managed to play one round of kinect sports before the action on screen went completely out of sync with my movements.

as for the voice thing nice idea when it works but why or why do you say “xbox on ” to turn on the system but “xbox power off” to turn off not “xbox off”.?

why when i say “xbox on” it does not turn on the controller just the system so i have to turn the controller on which seem a bit daft to me why not let xbox turn on the full system.?
i connect my cable box up but when i put the xb1 in power off/stand by mode i can not watch my cable box why not have a pass through ,as most people i don’t want to have my box switched on just to watch cable ( if theirs a way to do this it’s not clear in the setup guide).

have to say at the moment i am still feeling like a been charged for a accessory that i would not have normally buy ,the first Kinect was not so good and so far the new one does not seem to work any better.
the console is an amazing piece of tech but the Kinect is just rubbish.

maybe it’s the on board software that needs tweaking but it sure don’t work very well in my house.

  • Andy

Yup, same for me. Poor coding indeed…

  • QBRT55

    Major Nelson.

While the Xbox One is a fantastic machine…

I think the biggest single gripe I have for it is that the Voice Command functionality resembles that of an old Voice Control/typing program called Dragon Naturally Speaking from almost a decade ago. There are single commands without even an attempt to write in a few alternatives that people often use.

It just seems half-assed. I understand why, now that I’ve seen your announcements for a Siri like system that will likely replace the current voice control functionality entirely. But to cheap out on it, and just wait until 2015 when it’s ready to implement is just plain crazy. To the unwashed masses, this current voice control setup might seem fancy, but to anybody with technology experience, it’s quite outdated.
