Peggle 2 Drops onto Xbox One on Monday, PopCap Chats Today

Earlier this week, I got ahold of the final version of Peggle 2, which will be available for download this Monday, only on Xbox One. Peggle 2 incorporates a next-gen visual and auditory facelift with the Peggle’s trademark skill-meets-luck, just-one-more-level brand of fun. After an evening of playing through the first few stages of single player, and a number of rounds of the insanely fun multiplayer Peg Party mode, I fired a few questions across Western Washington to PopCap HQ. Here’s Jared from PopCap:

Hey, folks! I’m Jared Neuss, the Producer for Peggle 2 here at PopCap Games. We’re incredibly excited to announce that Peggle 2 will be coming to Xbox One next Monday, December 9th! The team and I can’t wait for you to meet the brand new Peggle Masters, learn their magical powers and, well, just have a great time. We’ve got tons of new levels, hundreds of objectives to complete and a whole bunch of ridiculous surprises lined up for you. We think you’ll love it.

Unless you hate joy and happiness. In that case, you’re on your own.

Recently, our friends across Lake Washington sent us a few questions to answer. Behold! Our answers!

Jeff Rubenstein, Xbox: How do you go about improving on what many considered a perfect game (not unlike the Plants vs Zombies team did earlier this year)?

Jared Neuss, PopCap Games:It’s all about taking everything that was great about the previous Peggle games and making it even more awesome. The visuals are richer, the audio is more sublime and the gameplay is more challenging and varied. The core of what makes Peggle so great is still intact, but we’ve managed to build an experience on it that feels completely new and unique.

Xbox: What do you think is the secret sauce that makes such a simple game so addictive. In my mind, Peggle is the rare videogame to evoke the feel of something mechanical like slots, Skee ball, pachinko, Plinko

PopCap: This is actually something that we talk about a lot at PopCap. The trick is to create an experience that’s easy to pick up and play but very difficult to master. If someone plays the game for a few minutes, they should be able to have an absolute blast. If they spend a bit more time digging in, though, we want them to have that “a-ha!” moment where they uncover layers of strategy that they weren’t aware of before.

Xbox: Talk about the importance of music in Peggle – the rising notes in a long string of hits, Ode to Joy. (Great re-make of that in the multiplayer lobby, btw.)

PopCap: Music is an integral part of the Peggle experience. When people talk about Peggle, Ode to Joy is always part of the conversation. With Peggle 2, we want to create even more iconic moments that perfectly blend gameplay and audio to draw people deeper into the game.  The soundtrack has something for everyone, from classical music to dub remixes. I’m constantly amazed by the things that our audio team can do. They’re not of this world.

Xbox: What is your favorite new Peggle Master power?

PopCap: Berg’s Deep Freeze power is my current favorite. When Deep Freeze is activated, the entire board becomes encased in ice, causing hit pegs to slip and slide around as they crash into each other. Setting off huge chain reactions of pegs is incredibly satisfying.

Elisa (via Twitter): How does it feel to know you’re simultaneously giving people so much joy while shutting down all productivity?

PopCap: I’ve gotta be honest: It feels pretty awesome.

Scratch (via Twitter): Tell them thanks for Peggle 2.

PopCap: My job requires me to talk about robo-gnomes, unicorns and yetis all day. So, no, thank you.

Interview, Xbox One By Jeff Rubenstein

  • ElektroDragon

YES! I am all over this! Add me if you want some Peggle 2 friends, I’m playing this immediately on Monday!

    • Nick Peck

Yah I can’t wait haha, one of my favorite odd games!

      • Brian Ghattas

I’m sure you two will have a good time playing Peggle 2 in between comparing basement furnishings and manhoods Monday.

Seriously, Peck, you have so many comments here. You certainly live your life online like so many others here.

        • Nick Peck

No, I just check in to see what new articles might be up, and to also check for moronic posts like all of yours to comment on quickly. All you do is bash everything so again, why do you even come to this site? Has your family shunned you so bad you can’t annoy them anymore so you have to come here?

          • Brian Ghattas

Considering you have 40 times more posts on Disqus, you’re the one with zero life away from your basement that everybody is seeing via Kinect 2.0. I come here to mock men like you who enjoy talking to 12 year old boys.

    • evilfangs .

I’m more then likely going to pick this up for something to play as I’ve just about completed the three launch games I’ve picked up. You can add me if you like.

GT is evilfangs if you do want to add me.

  • ElektroDragon

POPCAP: Please give us a new Bookworm game on consoles! I’ll even take a port of Bookworm Adventures! Come on!

  • Liquidfx Xboxdude

This game is a console seller for sure. <——-great example of extreme sarcasm.

    • ungeheier

Up until it was announced that it wouldn’t be a launch title this was going to be the first X1 game i was going to get an achievement on.

  • http://www.filmdump.com/ Anthony Smith

Here’s a question, why isn’t this on Xbox 360? Like, really?

    • Riddick Snipes

Absolutely. Why isn’t this on 360? I have peggle 1 on the 360 and the peggle nights dlc. For some reason this is an Xbox 1 exclusive. What rubbish. So people on the 360 don’t have access to the sequel. And people on the 1 don’t have access to the original. This is backwards. Even if its in 1080 60fps the 360 can handle it no problems. No reason for this to happen.

      • ElektroDragon

Stop being cheap and buy a next gen console already. :D

        • Riddick Snipes

U yourself said peggle is awesome. So y wouldn’t I expect it on my 360. Go spit.

      • xPutNameHerex

Timed exclusive. You’ll eventually get it on your Xbox 360 (or other modern platforms). Just unknown when that will be currently.

    • NBA Kirkland

I would guess odds are very good this comes to 360 in 2014. It’s only a timed exclusive for the Xbox One.

      • http://www.filmdump.com/ Anthony Smith

Hopefully. Just seems bizarre not to.

  • roozbeh, again

“My job requires me to talk about robo-gnomes, unicorns and yetis all day. So, no, thank you.”

    I ENVY YOU!!!

  • Look at them next gen graphics.

  • Laetteralus

Will there be microtransactions? Peggle was fine without them so please PopCap-EA don’t ruin a great game formula with proprietary money grabs. It better be Peggle with new game modes, mechanics and interesting levels.

  • Anonymous

    Q: is it in 720p?

    • roozbeh, again

      No, upscaled 480p @ 10FPS.

      Obviously a graphically taxing game.

      • evilfangs .

I heard it was actually dropping frames so the developers had to drop the native resolution down to 240p.

        • Dylan

You saw that rumor on Neogaf too!?
          It’s definitely a fact.

          • evilfangs .

Yea, sadly I’m not one to believe rumors but this one seems to have some truth too it, I’m a bit worried.

          • Nick Peck

            lol @ neogaf, garbage site.

          • ElektroDragon

About the only thing we can agree on. :D That and that Peggle is awesome.

          • beardyman3218

            Neoguf :)

          • evilfangs .

I think our sarcasm didn’t go down too well lol.

          • Dylan

            Nope! :)

  • Mark Stone

I want MS to implement Sony’s CrossBuy concept. Flower runs on PS3/PS4 and Vita all for one price!!

    • roozbeh, again

Smart concept, but would MS share it with? it’s not like they have a handheld console.

And Windows 8 would simply be bad, due to the lack of controllers and buttons aside from the keyboard.

      • Mark Stone

They have 360, One, Win 8 and Phone, and I’d be happy with 360/One sharing

        • Mark Stone

p.s You do know controllers work on a pc. Right ?

      • EldritchWarlord

MS did something like it with Halo: Spartan Assault, buying it once gave you both the Windows 8 and Windows Phone versions. I don’t think they’ll be doing the same with the upcoming Xbox 360 and One versions though.
It’s a shame too, that would really help improve their image (and I’d get the Xbox versions for free).
Also, Windows does support controllers and many Windows 8 devices use touchscreens. MS does sort of have a handheld console with Windows Phone.

        • xPutNameHerex

Halo: Spartan Assault wasn’t a “buy on one platform, get it free on the other one” type deal. It allowed you to resume your play from where you left off on one platform on the other platform if you bought both, like many games available on both Win8 and WP8.

    • xPutNameHerex

I would expect to see this in Spring 2015. That’s the current rumored date for “Threshold”, when Microsoft merges Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows Phone, and Xbox One into one all-encompassing OS, each with the same store.

  • NBA Kirkland

I want to start playing this ASAP. What time on Monday can we expect to be able to download it?

    • ElektroDragon

      ME TOO BROTHER!

  • SolidStateSR71

Why’s everything always about visuals? *facepalm* Look at Escape plan on the PS4… There’s some real next-gen graphics… It looks the same on my Vita..

    • Anonymous

Games like Ghosts look like garbage on the Xbone compared to PS4
MS are always saying 1080p Gamerpic 1080p Skype 1080p Xbox Videos but why only 720p games? us gamers made the Xbox brand dont care about all of these apps

      • ImTheMetalLord

PS FANBOY go back to your cave!

      • SolidStateSR71

Do you even have both systems? I own BF 4 and AC 4 on both XB1 and PS4 and to be completely honest.. they look exactly the same.. Furthermore.. have you been following Sony at all the past few years? All those… “Apps” you’re pooping on, they’ve adopted. Games running at 720p at launch is understandable it’s still new technology and prior to launch things about these systems change very… very often. They’re moving targets… It’s hard to optimize anything for new consoles because the firmware keeps getting updated.

        • ElektroDragon

You are as blind as a bat if you think ACIV and BF 4 look exactly the same on X1 and PS4! LOL! You need to get your eyes checked. You don’t even need to compare side by side, just look at Digital Foundry articles online.

          • Riddick Snipes

So your saying ac4 and bf4 look better on the ps4 than the 1. That’s what I’ve heard too and I’ve seen many comparison articles which favour the ps4. So if I get a ps4 it doesn’t really help me with peggle 2 does it? Hence y I think it should b on 360 as well.

          • Corellianrogue

Yeah, BF4 looks BETTER on the Xbox One. All you have to do is look at screenshots of the same scene side by side.

          • ElektroDragon

Gotta love blind (literally) devotion to a platform.

          • Corellianrogue

So you haven’t actually looked at side by side screenshots then? You could have just said that.

      • ElektroDragon

        And ACIV.

      • Corellianrogue

There are like only 3 or 4 multiplatform games that have a higher resolution on the PS4 than the Xbox One and at least 1 of them, Battlefield 4, actually has better graphics on the Xbox One because resolution isn’t everything there are other aspects like texture quality.

Also COD: Ghosts runs better on the Xbox One too. (Those people sayig it’s actually because the PS4 version ran higher than 60fps before the patch completely misread the Eurogamer article, the article said there were a few times before the patch that the PS4 went above 60fps that caused stutters but that most of the other frame rate issues were because of it going well UNDER 60fps and that the patch didn’t fix most of those issues just the few times it went over 60fps. Also before the patch the PS4 version was actually 720p, just like the Xbox One version.)

And we’re talking about multiplatform launch games which don’t exactly show what a console will be capable of in the future. But if you want to talk about launch games graphics then how about we talk about Ryse which easily has the best graphics so far. And if you want to talk about games coming in the future then let’s talk about Quantum Break, NOTHING shown so far on the PS4 (except the TECH DEMO Sorceror) comes close to it.

I want to know where were all the website headlines when some PS3 multiplatform games had lower resolutions than the Xbox 360 versions and sometimes have worse graphics in other aspects too? For example COD: Black Ops on the PS3 is 960×544 and runs at an average of 40fps whereas the Xbox 360 version is 1040×608 and is locked at 60fps.

        • Jeremiah Boeninger

Preach. I’ll take higher quality textures over a higher resolution.

    • Guest

It’s not everybody, just the wannabe gamer $0N¥ paupers.

  • Calmosity

Yes I love Peggle it looks awesome. How much GBP will it cost? :)

    • evilfangs .

      About £7.49 / $12.

      • ElektroDragon

Uh, no, it will cost $20. Same as every other Xbox One game that will ever come out digital only. The days of XBLA prices are as dead as XBLA itself.

        • evilfangs .

Well I was going by what Gamestop said the price will be.

          http://www gamespot com/articles/peggle-2-gets-release-date-and-price-for-xbox-one/1100-6416494/

        • Corellianrogue

No, it will cost $11.99 in the US, that was announced the other day.

          • ungeheier

its been announced before the X1 launched that it would be $12

          • Corellianrogue

Oh, OK, I didn’t know that. I thought they announced the price the same day as they announced the release date as that’s the first time I saw it.

          • ElektroDragon

I will believe that when I see it. Popcap are selling themselves short if that’s the case. First digital console game in a LONG time I would consider a bargain on release.

          • Corellianrogue

Then why don’t you go and look at the official Peggle Facebook page where they say that Peggle 2 will be $11.99. Although you seem to have a problem with going at looking at facts don’t you? You’d rather just make up stuff in your head and try to convince yourself and others that they are facts.

          • Riddick Snipes

It says 11.99 basically all over the net.

        • ualdayan

I miss XBLA. In particular the Microsoft requirement of trial versions. At launch Lococycle got some pretty bad reviews, but if a trial had been available I might have tried it, liked it more than the reviews said I would, and bought it. Seems they killed off that requirement for Xbox One developers though.

          • Corellianrogue

Yeah, they need to bring back the requirement for all downloadable games to have trials as it will actually hurt games not to have them. The only people that have to be afraid of demos are developers/publishers who know their games are bad.

I really want to try LocoCycle too as I don’t trust the reviews, especially since most of them seemed to mainly bash the graphics (stupid as I’m sure most people buying it will know that it’s basically just an Xbox 360 XBLA game and not expect Ryse quality graphics) and the fact it’s an arcade-style game.

It’s like if a game isn’t an FPS or open-world game these days it gets trashed. :( Arcade games are the true core of videogames as videogames as we know them started in the arcades so games from the arcade or in the style of those deserve more respect! I hate “arcadey” being used as a derogatory word, to me it’s a good thing unless it’s used to complain that a game that’s supposed to be a sim is too arcadey, that’s a valid negative use of the word.

    • evilfangs .

      $12 / £7.35.

  • Martin Fortune

2 weeks on and the game we get is Peggle……… seriously.!……. that’s little more than a mobile game.. I won’t be buying it anyway. It’s just not my kind of thing really. I just want some good arcade games.

    • Corellianrogue

It was supposed to come out on launch day but got delayed a couple of weeks. Also it’s only been 2 weeks since launch, I don’t remember previous consoles having floods of games released over their first couple of weeks, lol! What is it with the insane nit-picking this generation?

      • Martin Fortune

Well I just spent over €500 on a new console and I want some decent games to play on it. Some next gen only game. I have Ryse and ACIV, but I’m reluctant to get dead rising 3 after seeing it preowned on release day for a fiver cheaper(yeah nice one gamestop!).

        • Corellianrogue

This isn’t a next-gen game, it’s just a game that’s coming out on Xbox One first. Peggle didn’t exactly push the Xbox 360 graphically either and I’m sure could have been done on the original Xbox. In fact they could probably make a version for the Megadrive, lol! If you want games with next-gen graphics then get Dead Rising 3 like you said or Forza 5 or Battlefiled 4 for example.

Like I said, look back at all other consoles, you always had to wait a couple of months after launch to get more new games. They might be announcing more games tomorrow during VGX. I think they might announce what Black Tusk Studios’ game is called and show more of it. They’re showing more of Quantum Break and Titanfall there, that’s confirmed.

          • Martin Fortune

Yeah I know what your saying it’s just my shiny new X1 just seems so empty and needs games to fill it up like my 360. Can’t wait for both quantum break and titan fall.

          • Corellianrogue

The only thing I’m disappointed with is the lack of Kinect 2 games so far. Not having enough core Kinect 1 games was bad enough but Kinect 2 comes with every Xbox One so there’s no excuse! There are LOADS of Kinect game ideas in my head I want to play. I think ID@Xbox is going to help a lot as I bet loads of independent developers will want to use Kinect 2.

        • http://instantnyc12.tumblr.com/ Terrence Aybar

Dead Rising 3 is a blast. If you liked DR1 and 2, 3 is easily the best of the bunch.

    • ungeheier

Sucks for you. You’ll be missing out on one of the best Puzzle games.

    • Jeremiah Boeninger

Stop buying consoles at launch, then you won’t have this problem.

  • Corellianrogue

How about the Kinect 2 support? Is it going to include the option to have full Kinect 2 controls?

    • ElektroDragon

That would be a pretty stupid use of Kinect. The game requires fine precision aiming.

      • Corellianrogue

Kinect 2 can do fine precise aiming, so can Kinect 1 for that matter. For Kinect 1 check out Ghost Recon’s Gunsmith mode, Blackwater, and the clay pigeon shooting and archery in Cabela’s Adventure Camp just to name a few. You clearly know next to nothing about either Kinect. Anyway, they’ve already announced that Peggle 2 will have optional Kinect 2 motion controls and I’m hoping that means full motion controls.

        • ElektroDragon

Next to nothing huh? I’ve had the original Kinect since before it even came out, got it free as a beta tester. Not even close to precise. And while the new Kinect 2.0, which I’ve had since launch day, is an improvement, it still isn’t even close to being accurate enough for something requiring precise aim. If Peggle 2 motion controls are actually any good and not a tacked on gimmick, I’ll be back to report the truth. But keep on refuting everything I say, it only makes it clear to everyone else what a delusional fanboy you are.

          • Corellianrogue

You obviously don’t use it properly then since those games and loads more couldn’t even exist if Kinect 1 wasn’t precise enough. There are enough videos on YT that prove it (along with what I can just personally do at home with my Kinect and see with my own eyes) but I can’t post any links here since if you post links in comments here the comment goes into moderation he11.

Also, Dr. Kourosh Khoshelham, a professor at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation of the University of Twente in The Netherlands, has written a research paper on the accuracy and precision of Kinect 1. But of course you know better than him because you claim to have been a beta tester and that beats any scientific knowledge a professor has doesn’t it? Lol!

And the fact that developers are praising the precision of Kinect 2 and how it’s so much better than Kinect 1 largely due to the (used by professionals in other industries due to its precision and accuracy) time-of-flight sensor doesn’t matter either because you know better, right? Don’t you just love Lysenkoists?

  • ungeheier

    I WANT IT NOW!!!!

  • GmailIsDown

I bought almost all the launch games at launch day. I still have yet to receive the Day One edition bonuses. Anyone in the same boat?

    • Riddick Snipes

U mean the boat filled with cash.

    • Corellianrogue

Do you mean you bought the Day One editions from online shops and the games haven’t arrived yet or do you mean you’ve got the games but haven’t got the Day One bonuses? If you’ve got the games and you definitely bought the Day One editions (the have big black Day One 2013 lables at the top) but haven’t got the bonuses then did you actually use the QR codes in the boxes? Because the bonuses aren’t on the discs, you download them using the QR codes that are on cards in the games’ boxes. (Or you can type them in, but the QR codes work instantly, just say “Xbox, use code.” and hold the QR code up to Kinect 2, no further than about a metre away.)

      • GmailIsDown

I meant I bought the launch games digitally on release day. Major Nelson said that if you bought the games within 2 weeks of release date, you’d get the same preorder bonuses.

i just checked the blog article and apparently Major took that back.

really? i’d get the physical Day One editions if i knew this.

        http://majornelson com/2013/08/27/what-will-be-included-in-the-day-one-editions-of-forza-motorsport-5-ryse-son-of-rome-and-dead-rising-3/

    • ElektroDragon

That’s why I went physical again this gen. These companies still don’t have their act together on all-digital products.

      • Corellianrogue

Wow, you’re actually right about something. I’ll never go all digital unless I’m forced to as we should be able to own physical products. I missed the “digitally” part in GmaillsDown’s post, I’m not sure how Day One Editions work there, I presumed they came with the bonus downloads. He should check his emails for codes something.

  • Brian Ghattas

Honestly, PopCap Games is really dumb. Only releasing the game on one platform to start; especially one with very few owners in North America? Very stupid move but this is EA we’re talking about. Same people who butchered Battlefield 4 and will butcher Titanfall. Keeping people who didn’t waste their $$$ on a money pit from playing Peggle 2 will bite EA and PopCap right where the sun doesn’t shine.

    • Riddick Snipes

      Beautifully spoken!

    • Guest

The only one dumb here, is YOU, pauper.

      • Brian Ghattas

If anybody is a pauper, it’s you, Anon.

        • Brian Ghattas

I’ll bet you wouldn’t downvote me if it weren’t anonymous. Sad how many men nuzzle up to other men nowadsys. Disgusting and disgraceful.

          • Nick Peck

Hey, I’m going to be you for a second, “Hey I hate the games everyone says they like and I don’t even like they system this site is dedicated to, so I’m going to come here and hate on everything and everyone”.. ok I’m done.. that, wasn’t fun. You must have a boring life.

          • Brian Ghattas

Says the guy with 4000 posts. You’re the one who has no social life outside of the Internet and showing off your basement furnishings via Kinect 2.0 when you aren’t talking to 12 year old boys in CoD..

          • Nick Peck

You do know that I’m signed in with a disqus account that goes back years across many, many websites right? But I give you an A for effort, you are consistent in looking stupid.

          • Brian Ghattas

Like I have time to bother checking, idiot. Must feel good that a bunch of pimply-faced teenagers kiss your butt here for being one of Larry’s biggest toadies. You know there’s a special place in Hell for people like you and UNSCleric if you’ve played Dante’s Inferno. Bet your entire life you’ve brown-nosed your way through it.

          • Nick Peck

Well how about taking the initiative and instead of making a stupid comment (which you area an ace at by the way), look up some info first before saying what you say. Do you ever think before you speak???

And you don’t have time? But you have plenty of time for the garbage that you consistently post here (and who knows what other sites you infect)?? Man, you make so much sense. :|

I enjoy this brand and I come here to talk about it like NORMAL people do, though I know that point is lost on “people” like yourself. Just leave, no one cares what you have to say obviously.

          • Brian Ghattas

Yeah, because NORMAL “people” overpay for their entertainment and have trusted Microsoft blindly since 2005.

You are the epitome of the American Idiot, Peck. People laugh at your kind now. Seriously, the hypocrisy of you, Mitchell Hall and UNSCleric is disgusting. Just admit you are addicted at being seen and heard, Peck, just like Robby Boy is.

    • Brian Ghattas

I love how I got 9 downvotes from the toilet dwellers here. You can’t accept the reality that getting in bed with a sinking ship like EA does more to harm the Xbox brand than help it. Peggle 2 should be on ALL platforms or at least on Xbox 360 and One to start.

  • Liquidfx Xboxdude

popcap is like the hell of video games where as 2k and rockstar is the heaven. amen.

    • Nick Peck

Yah… ok. Like them or not, they have several great games under their roof, Peggle being one of them.

      lmao What

  • iSoar

Really excited about this. game. As for others in the forum. Apparently they have never bought a launch console before and believe 10 new AAA games come out every week, or they have nothing to play on their PS4, or both.

if thats true the wiiu would be #1 but o fcourse thats all anyone says, the wiiu has no games , So it does matter if it doen’t why buy a new system? to look at it and hope for games. people are just system people but not gamers

They younger crowds are used to how the 360 and ps3 are now and aren’t used to (or even know) how long it takes to build a new systems library. Everyone expects new stuff every day or else they feel slighted lol.

Do what I had to do when I was a kid when you had to wait for magazines to show up for any game related info, go outside and find other things to do instead of sitting in front of the tv for 18hrs a day :p

Peggle is a great time waster. As for nothing to play on the PS4, that sounds pretty close to the truth.

No Leaderboards in the single player game? Are you f… serious???

    • Stefan Gabbert

Not even in the multiplayer? Will it come as a DLC for another 10 Bucks? I love peggle but the replay value of such a game comes from the leaderboards. So why that?

      • Nick Peck

I could care less for leaderboards personally but that sucks that they aren’t there atm. I’m sure it will get updated at some point, and no, they won’t charge to add leaderboards lol.
